Everything has its limits it isnt always the case of bad design or maintenance most of these dams have been doing what they were designed for, for along time
This dam has no lake behind it. It is designed to continuously allow the Nolichucky River to flow over it once the river reaches a particular height. But the amount of rainfall from Helene is what's causing the issue.

@@tommytomtom5531 you hope so? Why would you say that?
Let's go through this slowly. V E R Y slowly...
Water is rolling across the top of the dam exactly as designed. Yet. The dam is in danger of collapse... One of two things. Engineering is fradulent. Or, we don't understand that the engineering is fradulent. Yet. What is the purpose of a dam? Stop water. Is it doing that? No. Anyone need more information? here it is : either we put up with this and see a lot more, or we don't. If you have a third alternative, put it here.
any picture of the dam?
Downstream(If my knowledge of geography is correct) is Fontana Dam.... Is Fontana Dam going to break next???
Fontana Dam is on the Little Tennessee River.
From what I can tell, Douglas dam outside of Sevierville TN is next downstream. Fontana is way south of where all the dam failures are happening.
Fontana is in the mountains of western North Carolina
@@smctrout4423 You are right. I stand corrected. Nonetheless I hope Fontana Dam can hold!
Specific info on the dam is available at the US Geological web site. Anyone can view.

If a storm and heavy rains is predicted, why don’t they start lowering the level of the damn hours if not a day or two before hand?
So it can cause major damage and chaos in this election year. The democrats need mass chaos to have a chance at stealing this one..

But she knew when to give up and go on!
Anybody in politics ever thought of passing a bill to fix America's failing infrastructure. This where our tax dollars are needed. Not the nefarious ways in which it is now spent.
No, our government just wants to send billions overseas. Think of all that money we sent to Ukraine. We could’ve fixed all kinds of issues with that. Like Maui, Pahl, Ohio, and now the southeast. But nope. We have to send it overseas.
Go talk to the republicans because they have repeatedly resisted passing infrastructure bills for decades when they control Congress including under trump. Democrats under Biden during the first two years of his term when they did control Congress passed the trillion $$ infrastructure bill. That isn't near enough to cover needs in this country, but it was the most that they could pass. It's a start.
We just passed a $2T infrastructure bill, 3 years ago.
@@sarahbrown5073
Actually it was 1.2 billion.
65 Billion was spent on giving internet to welfare recipients. 50 billion on climate change. 21 Billion on Superfund Sites. ....you get the idea. Only 110 Billion of it was spent on roads and bridges.
ONLY 110 BILLION out of 1.2 Trillion. We need Elon to stop the waste and fire some people.

Maybe, just maybe, the infrastructure should have been designed for such a situation.
Instead of sending money to countries like Israel and the Ukraine perhaps they need to use the money to fix these situations? Our government no longer serves the people.
It was, 100 years ago. Dams and bridges need maintenance and repairs to stay in good working order. These things cost money. Tax cuts and spendings cuts for the last 50 years has left no money for repairs.

Biden just sent another $8B to Ukraine! That would be nice to "Build Back Better" here!

I only know where the river runs near Erwin TN. My family has owned a farm and apple orchard near there for over 250 years. It was NC colony before Tennessee became a state. I remember white water rafting on the Nolichucky a real long time ago. Not very challenging then but I bet it is now. Praying for those living close to the river.
thinking they should open the gates a lil' but that's just me....why let it break????
Sometimes the floodgates are not big enough to save the dam. This was a historic amount of rain.
Opening the gates is like pulling the plug on a bathtub while youre filling it with a firehose.
The gates no longer operate

But we have electric charging stations…

What was the video of the bridge being washed away? (It obviously was NOT the dam!)
One mile down doesn't seem like enough evac. Get out of your anywhere in the area
The dam is not very large and there is no lake behind it (it's more like a big waterfall even in normal times).
This video was 7 days ago..This afternoon I saw a video put out by TVA , specifically the COO over dams and flood control. He stated ALL the dams are holding and operating as they should. Every dam, and lake height, is being controlled 24/7 until the crisis is over !
Not immenent anymore, it just broke😵😵😭
Oh dear
From 10News website …. “The weather service said dam operators reported that it failed, and said anyone in the area should move to higher ground.”
I think about all the innocent lives and how Tn should have been using our tax dollars more wisely
Oh shit, I gotta go find a feed.

@1:21 Did she say "a minute failure"? And what does that mean?
Eminent or about to happen.
She butchered the word “eminent” and just kept going…hoping no one was watching, listening and/or paying attention…
@@fish1907 If she butchered a word, it was imminent, not eminent. Eminent has no meaning in the context of the story.
@@wayneessar7489 I'm sure you mean imminent. Eminent does not mean "about to happen".
Everything has its limits it isnt always the case of bad design or maintenance most of these dams have been doing what they were designed for, for along time
That sheriff needs to issue clear and unwavering recommendations or commands. Not, "maybe, if you have somewhere to go,..."

I'm glad that the dam survived the night. Maybe the dam will survive completely and the region will have one less disaster.
You would think experts would lower the levels of the dam before the storm approached?
Clearly you're no expert.
This dam has no lake behind it. It is designed to continuously allow the Nolichucky River to flow over it once the river reaches a particular height. But the amount of rainfall from Helene is what's causing the issue.
let's keep making cuts to government spending... giving rich people tax breaks and let all infrastructure fall into such disrepair it can cause death and destruction.
