  • In depth Alpine iLX-507 review by ‪@carstereochick‬ In this video I unpack all the nitty gritty details including the quirks and perks of the Alpine iLX-507. How responsive is the touch screen? Is it really HD? How well does Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work? How easy is it to switch between devices? Are Alpine's multi-view HD front and rear camera's really worth the premium price? You be the judge as I compare it to the Rydeen CM-HD4 and Kenwood CMOS-740HD.
    Want to know what Alpine's RUX-H02 Halo Knob is all about? Check it out here. Can you really use two composite camera's or do you need any additional parts? What is the new EQ section like? That and SO much more is covered in this in depth Alpine iLX-507 review.

    Nice job on the video and review/overview of the product! Was thinking of upgrading from my iLX-407 to this unit solely on the wireless Carplay availability, but two things give me pause: the screen responsiveness issues you noted, and the completely abandonment of support for PowerPack amps. If I went with this model, I'd have to find a way to jerry rig something to mount the amp elsewhere. Kind of a bummer that they don't have an adapter that can mount the PowerPack horizontally on the stereo or something. Oh, well. Happy with my unit other than the lack of wireless Carplay, so will likely just stay with it. Thanks, and keep the great content coming...!

      @carstereochick  Рік тому +5

      Thanks so much Rob, I really appreciate your encouraging feedback! I agree I thought it was weird that they didn't do the shallow chassis to accommodate the power pack. I was disappointed to see that when I first opened up the box. I'm guessing it has something to do with the size of the components that enable the wireless functionality? But not too sure. You could definitely relocate the amp if you really wanted to upgrade, but I hear you especially when you consider the screen responsiveness. More content coming this weekend on the new Sony XAV-AX4000 and XAV-AX6000! Thanks again :)

    I bought an ILX-507 and ended up returning it out of frustration over the poor screen response and overall poor interface system. I had so many issues with AA disconnecting. I was very lucky and saw the DMX958XR come out on Jan 1st and requested an exchange through Crutchfield. I only wish that the 958 had something similar to the ILX-507 BT knob...

      So glad I wasn't the only one that noticed the weird screen responsiveness! Nice choice with the DMX958XR. Did you ever try out the Halo BT knob with the Alpine? I recently learned that knob doesn't auto-reconnect. Apparently you're supposed to tap the knob every time you start up the vehicle in order for them to re-connect? I did NOT see that in the pairing guide, but heard Alpine say this at a recent training. I feel that is a serious design flaw.

      Thanks so much for watching! That's tough. The Alpine high res HCE-C2100RD camera I think is kind of washed out in color compared to other options, but it can be helpful to have that multi-view function so it sort of depends on what you most need it for. If you're towing, it's helpful to have that top down view option that comes with the Alpine HCE-C2100RD. For a universal high quality reverse camera, we do a lot with the Rydeen CM-HD4.

      @carstereochick  Рік тому

      Does your Escalade have a rear seat entertainment system where you load the DVD in the front unit? If so, and you want to retain it, you're probably better off with the Kenwood. It does have dual zone and the necessary DVD player. You'll be able to retain the steering wheel controls and utilize Apple CarPlay wirelessly with either option and either head unit will sound great with that set up. I've been really impressed with the whole R line series - speakers, subs and their amps too!

    You're spot on re: "quirkiness". Like your customer mentioned @16:00, I too have a '17 Forester and got a Maestro along with the iLX-507. The quirk that drives me bonkers is that steering wheel controls are inactive/ignored until a button on iLX-507 such as +/ - / mute is pushed. Have you heard lots of complaints about that one? Not sure if it its an Alpine bug, RR interaction issue, etc.

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  8 місяців тому +2

      I'm so glad your found it helpful! I have not run into that with the steering wheel controls not being active until you press a button on the radio. Interesting. Do you have the latest firmware on the stereo? Might want to try re-flashing the Maestro RR. If you do that, flash it for something totally different like a 2015 VW Jetta or something and then re-flash it for your car. For some reason re-flashing it like that for a totally different vehicle 1st seems to work better than just re-flashing it for the same vehicle.

      @@carstereochick, I've recently found reviews & forum posts by others having this same problem - it seems that update to the latest 5.0.000+ firmware is actually what breaks things! I myself did the 5.0.001 update right out of the box, and there doesn't seem to be a way to downgrade.
      ADS (Maestro) responded today saying that Alpine has been made aware of this bug in their firmware, and that availability of another update with a fix is TBD. I get the impression that steering wheel events sent to Alpine via idatalink interface are now ignored until/unless one of those iLX-507 buttons are pushed (sleeping at the wheel, so to speak ;-).

      “The new ingenious 1 DIN design for 7-inch capacitive display audio, 7-inch display with CarPlay Wireless and Android.”

      Ooh, that's a good question. Really good question. I would reach out to iDatalink directly because this is sort of a gray area where I think iDatalink is actually handling the switching if it's an OEM set up. Not sure the year of your vehicle, but the install guide for a 2018 shows it retains the 360 camera and I only see the reverse camera input being used in the install guide.
      Ran into this recently with a Kenwood DMX709s we installed in a Subaru that had an OEM rear camera and park sensors. The screen kept getting taken over by the park sensor/camera display after shifting out of reverse into drive even though the park sensor display was separate from the radio and not actually detecting anything. We had to disable the park distance sensor option from the Maestro so it would stop overriding the Kenwood display. But it wasn't even a Kenwood that supported smart park or camera assignment settings. In some cars these things are being handled all by the Maestro which is what was happening in the Subaru and in others (like a Honda with blind spot camera) I've had to use a more advanced Kenwood stereo that supported camera assignment settings in the radio.

      Hi Jeff, thanks! I have not done a side by side with the 507 latest firmware and 958XR. I should. Previously I had done a side by side with the 507 and the DMX1057XR. Personally, John and I both preferred the sound of the Kenwood, but they're both great options and very similar. If you look at the EQ curve in our other iLX-507 video, John basically got the Alpine to sound nearly identical to the Kenwood. It's just the 507 seemed a bit thin to us with everything flat. So in that sense the 507 is a great buy because you can really fine tune it to your liking. What drives me bonkers is the lack of responsiveness when you're on the screen when you're in that EQ menu!
      PS - One of my favorite single din decks I ever had was a CDA-7995 and I also had a CDA-9887. Good stuff.

    Your channel is so helpful! I'm trying to decide on a new headunit for my 2006 Corvette and it's between this Alpine ILX-507 and the Kenwood Excelon DMX958XR. I think it's honestly down to the boot sequence for me and the fact you can't disable the warning and "agree" menu on a Kenwood. The Alpine does that right in my opinion. For sound quality, it seems like the Kenwood takes the win. GUI on the Alpine seems to be worlds better to me. I can't stand the variable font sizes on the Kenwood that look so goofy in certain menus. I honestly really like the look of the Sony interface, but reviews seem to indicate a never ending string of bugs and partial fixes in firmware updates. I also don't like how Sony only does wireless CarPlay and not wired as an option. Man.. seems like no one has the perfect headunit without cons. Hopefully your channel accurately pointing out these cons across the industry results in improvement across the board.

      Thank you so much for your kind words!! You've really summed it up well and this is something I go over with clients all the time because no one really makes the perfect head unit. You really have to weigh what features are most important to you. I have to say I haven't had any clients experience any bugs or connectivity issues with Sony, but the display is much more vibrant on the Kenwood. I was thinking of putting the XAV-9000ES in my own car. I do think it's weird that it's wireless only, but that's another option to consider.

      The firmware update does not have any effect on the screen responsiveness unfortunately. The 407 and 650 are more responsive to touch, but lack a lot of the more desirable audio features found in the 507. If you step up to to the 509 or 511, those are definitely more responsive to touch like the 407 and 650.

    I just bought the Ilx-507. I bought two non-alpine cameras, one for the front and one for the rear. I used two of the alpine to RCA connectors. These connectors only have two wires in them. I wired the car's reverse line into the deck. In the camera interface only camera 1 is enabled but is greyed out. Camera 2 (front) will not enable. I can swap the cables and both camera's will work but only one at a time but only as camera 1 (rear) input. Why won't camera 2 enable in the interface? Both of these camera's only have the two RCA wires running to them. There are no separate power lines running to them, but the camera connected to rear (camera 1) works. What am I missing? Why does the front camera input not want to enable and turn on?

Also, does this play Dolby Atmos audio files from Tidal?

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому

      No, this radio does not have an A/V out for the USB. I also don't believe it has dual zone, you would need that too. It does have an HDMI input and HDMI output, but I don't know if you could adapt that output to composite/RCA and pipe it into your RSE.
      Typically when I have a client vehicle with RSE and we want to retain it, I go to www.idatalinkmaestro.com/en and look up the vehicle to see if RSE can be retained. If it can, we usually go with a Kenwood radio that has a DVD player and Dual Zone. This way you pop the DVD in the front player and audio is routed to the rear monitor/headphones and you can still use SiriusXM or Apple CarPlay up front. In that set up your audio goes to the front speakers, audio to the rear speakers is defeated and works thru the wireless headphones.
      I actually don't see RSE listed in the application guide for this vehicle, BUT they do list the accessory AVCH1 which can be used to retain RSE, but it can also be used to retain the back up camera in some models. I would call them for clarification, because it's not 100% clear to me if you can retain it in this car. Sometimes they don't know either and what we do is disconnect the radio and see if the system still operates as a stand alone through the headphones only. Did that recently for a client with a newer Chrysler Town & Country. His player was separate, below the radio up front and only worked thru the wired headphone inputs once the radio was removed.
      Where exactly is the DVD player in your car? Is it part of the radio? Up front, but below the radio in a separate unit? Or in the rear at the monitor itself? If it's separate from the radio, it may continue to operate without being tied into the new audio system (headphones only).

I think if it's for a Samsung phone, you may want to get the Samsung adapter. I think for the earlier phones, it may be proprietary kind of like Apple's where if you use a generic version, it may not work properly. It may depend on the exact phone model.

    Curious did updating the firmware fix the UI lag you were pointing out? I too noticed this when I went to my local shop and tried the unit out in person. I was like huh? What in the world is going on? This thing being in 2023 shouldn't be behaving like this? So with that...what would you recommend? The Alpine ILX-507 or the Kenwood DMX958? Pretty hefty $200 price difference between the 2. I am torn. So far for my comparison: Alpine has no pesky "warning" startup screen each time it boots up. But it seems to lag more vs the Kenwood. The Alpine has a better more robust EQ but the Kenwood has a lot of extra add-on features to enhance the sound. I watched all your videos and don't see anywhere you compared the 2 units in regards to sound quality. Being both have HD LDAC, I am guessing sound quality would be similar but then again, your reviews showed the Alpine not to be making 4volts pre-out and the Kenwood was close to 5volts pre-out? so hmm. Thoughts to help me make my decision, please! My main decision factors: Sound Quality, UI non-laggy, EQ tuneability, and head unit features. Thank you!

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  11 місяців тому +2

      No, the update did not have any affect on that EQ screen that drives me bonkers. We did cover the sound quality on the 507 in one video (I think the pre-amp voltage one) and we show the EQ curve John does to sort of fatten up the Alpine. They are very close, both excellent sound quality, but with everything flat, the Alpine can sound a bit thin. However that is easily corrected with the EQ.
      The other thing to keep in mind with LDAC - if you're using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you're not using LDAC. Apparently both are being done over WiFi which is topping out at 16 bit / 48 kHz. Unless you're using the built in Tidal app on Alpine or a stand alone audio device streaming over Bluetooth that is LDAC compatible.

    Thank you for the review and live demo. It's really beneficial to see how it operates in your live demo as opposed to just talking about its features & specs, etc. 👍
    Before doing your review, did you check to see that it had the latest firmware and software update? For future reference, which version is currently installed?
    I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed overall. Even the Boot Up time is not great. As a comparison, my 2018 Kenwood eXcelon Reference DDX9905S boots up in about 8.5 seconds, and 12 seconds with a full 2TB USB HDD attached. It does take about 20 seconds to connect my Android smartphone via Android Auto, though.
    The Screen LAG is NOT a good thing. Even the plain Jane basic OEM touchscreen head units have no issues with this! IMO, if you will be continuously distracted from the road and driving by having to keep pressing/touching the screen to get it to switch functions, it is a serious SAFETY HAZARD, the same as Texting while driving!
    And even though the 2018 DDX9905S did Not come with WIRELESS Android Auto, only wired AA via USB, it now works perfectly WIRELESSLY with Android Auto and it connects perfectly every time, whereas the Wired USB AA was extremely finicky. :)
    IMO, the only real differentiating feature that the new Alpine Halo head units have is the Independent Left & Right PEQ for Every Channel, which is a big deal IMO, but I'm sure that the next versions of the other major brands will have this as well.
    But you are still limited to 6 output channels, so to do a full active Front/Rear/Subwoofer setup with active 2- or 3-way components in front, rear coaxials, and a subwoofer, you're going to need a "real" DSP with more output channels.
    Oh, and I do love the RUX-H02 wireless Remote Knob. I'd like to see this become a universal option and feature with every brand and head unit.
    Thanks again for your review. It was a real eye opener. Now I can understand why the newer Chinese Android-based head units such as "Joying" are becoming more & more popular. The major car audio manufacturers really need to step up their game sooner rather than later if they want to stay relevant in this category!

      Agree with your peeve about Alpine's usual lack of camera inputs as well. And the quality is MUCH better on the Kenwood HD camera. Even the color and contrast of the Rydeen camera blows away the Alpine's HD camera. Thanks for showing that!
      Maybe there are some screen adjustments for Brightness, Color, and Contrast in the iLX-507 Display Settings that would help in this regard? But out-of-the-box, it really doesn't look good. :(
      And IMO, at this point in time ALL camera inputs should be at least FULL HD (1080P) via a mini-HDMI connector. (Let's do away with those proprietary connections as well, please!). Composite Video via RCA is from the 1980's when we were using 4:3 aspect ratio CRT tube TVs! Yes, that was over *40* years ago! HELLO, it's 2022 folks!

      Thank you so much for taking the time watch and comment! I am totally on the same page with you with all points raised. The lack of responsiveness on the screen is super annoying and agree it can become a safety hazard if you're continually looking down trying to make a selection!!!
      The DDX9905s was definitely super finicky with AA. There were many earlier AA models where the only way we could get it to work properly was to connect the client's original USB Charge/Sync cable directly to the head unit's USB input. The higher speed connection on this works great and for every one that I've sold, I've had no issue connecting AA. Usually all I have to do is connect a client's Android phone once to the USB and it does wireless right away. I think part of the reason I had difficulty in the video is I had previously connected that same phone and cleared device memory from the phone and the radio and it's almost like it didn't clear properly.
      Great point about the software - we are running the latest version 2.0.000 on the one in the video and always update each one before the client picks their car up. For those having issues and reading the comments, that update can be found here:
      kb.alpine-usa.com/article/ilx-f511-ilx-f509-i509-wra-jk-jl-ilx-507-firmware-update-v-2-0-000.html
      I'm curious to know what you felt about the sound quality difference between the DDX9905s and the iLX-507? I do side by side comparison's on my sound board, but it's not the same as the in car experience. Do you think the Alpine is as smooth/detailed as Kenwood? Or do you think it's a bit brighter? Thanks for the reply! Hopefully Alpine will see your review and will fix at least some of the issues that you pointed out here in a future software/firmware update!
      I really wish that I could help you in regards to the differences in SQ between the Kenwood eXcelon Reference head units and the new Alpine iLX-5xx series. I'm interested to know myself as well! I haven't yet purchased or installed the new Alpine iLX-507. And after seeing your review, I may not. :-P
      I watched your review here because I was considering this new Alpine head unit for a relatively "simple but good" SQ install in one of my utility/work fleet vehicles due to its built-in DSP features with the independent L&R channel P-EQ, T/A, and Crossovers, etc.
      I didn't want to go with a full-blown standalone DSP or DSP/Amplifier in this particular vehicle, but I still want a decent SQ system with a good soundstage and lifelike tonality, as I have several very high-end audio installs with full DSP and high-end amplifiers and components in my other vehicles. I was just planning to install a small, mid-tier 8" or 10" shallow sealed subwoofer for the low end for this install.
      I am still using the older DDX9905S in one of my vehicles, but have upgraded to the newer DDX9907XR in my other cars. After living with the Kenwood eXcelon Reference head units for a few years, I've been curious how the new Alpine iLX Halo series stacks up and compares (always looking to try something new, LOL).
      However, I've been extremely happy and impressed with the SQ, and the speed of the USB file playback using a 2TB SSD drive, and Android Auto functionality with all of the Kenwood DDX99xx series head units. I'm not in love with the GUI in general, but they do everything I need for the most part. As you know, the 5-volt RCA preouts are clean and don't clip, so that obviously helps.
      But TBH, my main playback sources in my car audio systems now use my portable iBasso DX300 DAP, or a 12.4" Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ tablet combined with a USB "Bridge" to Toslink Optical adapter connected to my various DSPs via pure digital connections.
      These do seem to provide just a bit better SQ overall compared to the Kenwood eXcelon Reference head units, but it really depends on the Quality of the Music and Files that you play. ;)
      Sometimes there isn't a discernable difference at all, unless the recording itself is outstanding. ;) And when combined with road/tire/wind noise while driving at highway speeds, it gets even harder to discern the differences sometimes. But they are there.
      For convenience, in one of my cars I also installed the Audsion B-Con Hi-Res Bluetooth receiver which connects via digital Toslink optical to my DSP. When combined with the LDAC Bluetooth audio codec that's available in the B-Con and my Galaxy Tablet and smartphone, it also sounds fantastic for everyday listening and keeps a solid connection.
      It's probably obvious by now that I'm somewhat of a music and audio NERD, LOL, so I'm running a different DSP in each vehicle, LOL...an Audiotec-Fischer Helix DSP ULTRA, a miniDSP C-DSP 8x12 with DIRAC Live, and the Gladen/Mosconi 8TO12 Aerospace DSP.
      They each have their Pros & Cons, and all of them sound fantastic when the system is tuned properly. At the moment, the DIRAC Live in the miniDSP unit has given me the best results...simply amazing SQ! I also use REW, Smaart v8, and SysTune combined with professional microphones to do acoustic measurements and adjust the DSPs, along with my ears, of course. ;)
      Recently I've been trying the new JL Audio TuN 4.0 DSP software for measurements and DSP adjustments, even though I'm not using their VXi DSP/Amps. I've had fairly good and quick results with this software because it is somewhat "stripped down" but integrates the necessary standard measurement and correction tools along with the real-time Phase Analysis features of the much more complicated Smaart v8 software. Good stuff, and it's FREE, so there's that. :)
      Curiously, I've never been a SQ competitor, but I know and talk to a lot of the guys and gals that do compete in SQ competitions in organizations such as IASCA, MECA, and EMMA, etc. I've always been a home and car HiFi/Stereo addict and a musician (Drums/Percussion & Saxophone), so that has been an influence in my audio journey. Anyway....
      Regarding the wired USB/AA connection issues with the Kenwood DDX9905S & DNX995S, etc, 95% of the issue is due to the USB CABLE that is used. You need to choose a 3rd party USB cable that has a larger internal wire gauge, and it usually helps if the USB cable is shorter as well. I tried every OEM USB cable that was supplied with the Android device and they ALL did not connect consistently. :(
      So when I first had this wired USB/AA connection issue, I purchased about 6 different "heavy duty" USB cables on Amazon and tested the connection to my DDX9905S. Out of the 6 cables, only 2 of them would consistently connect and stay connected to Android Auto in the DDX9905S! I posted Links to the cables that worked consistently in a DNX995/DDX9905S Review Thread on the DIY Mobile Audio Forums. (My user name is "bbfoto" there as well).
      One of the USB cables that worked perfectly was a short, thick 12" cable, and one was a red 1m USB cable with white connectors at each end (both USB-A to USB-C). I used the shorter one as my primary cable as it was the perfect length to reach my smartphone cradle/mount on the dash.
      These new 3rd party USB cables were used in combination with the OEM Kenwood 1m USB Extension Cables that are included with the DDX9905S. But even without the Kenwood USB Extension Cables, my smartphone would not consistently connect to AA in the head unit even with the Samsung OEM USB cables.
      But once I started using these new 3rd Party USB cables, my Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone would connect perfectly to AA in the DDX9905S every time with no issues at all...though it was still a bit slow. :)
      Unfortunately, the Galaxy Note smartphone that I was using at the time was several generations old, and the latest Android OS updates were no longer supported. :(
      Then, just by chance, my nephew was riding shotgun with me on a road trip and wanted to connect his Android smartphone to my DDX9905S head unit via AA. The Bluetooth and WiFi in his entry level 2022 Samsung Galaxy A13 5G smartphone were already switched ON.
      He was just about to connect the USB-C cable to his phone, but before he could, to my shock, his smartphone Automatically appeared in a pop-up on the head unit asking to pair & connect to the head unit. After touching "OK" on the DDX9905S head unit's pop up, his phone Connected WIRELESSLY to Android Auto WITHOUT using the USB Cable! :)
      This head unit obviously did NOT come with WIRELESS AA capability, so I was perplexed. It turns out that the newer version of AA (that I was not able to download on my older smartphone) made this possible. Shortly after, I updated to a new Galaxy smartphone, and it connects to AA in the DDX9905S WIRELESSLY Every Time, with no issues. :) So I'm still very pleased with this head unit.
      I apologize for going so far Off Topic, but perhaps this information might be useful to someone else who reads these comments.
      Thanks again for the review! And please let us know if you get a chance to compare the SQ of one of the Kenwood eXcelon Reference head units that you have to these new Alpine iLX 5-series models with a good set of component speakers (preferably with a good amplifier as well)!
      Cheers!

      Thank you. It really depends on what features are most important to you. I think the best thing to do is focus on your top features/concerns. Is it to have the best screen quality and responsiveness? The most intuitive and simplest user interface? The fastest boot up time? The most long term reliability? Do you need something with a DVD or CD player? Do you care about scrolling presets or fixed presets or do you plan to use the steering wheel controls? Do you want a radio with hard buttons so you can reach over and feel the controls without looking down? Or do you prefer the sleek look of a screen with no physical buttons? These are all questions I ask to try and help people focus on what's most important so they can make their decision wisely. I hope that helps!

      I'm so glad you found it helpful! I am very honest with these reviews, but if you get to know me and watch a few, you will find pretty much every head unit has it's pro's and con's and I will always do my best to point out any/and all flaws. It's a matter of figuring out which features are most important to you. We have sold many of these and have had very few if any complaints from clients, more just quirks that we deal with. The other models to consider would be the Sony XAV-AX6000 (but that has its drawbacks when you look at the pre-amp voltage test video and how you have to set up the EQ to actually get 5 volts). I will be reviewing the Kenwood DMX958XR shortly. I am a bit of out the game with Pioneer. They were hit really hard with the chip shortage so I really haven't carried/sold their product in the past 2 years, but they were always known for having a really nice user interface/attractive appearance. I am a huge fan of Kenwood as they tend to be very reliable, sound fantastic and have some great audio control features. Yet they are known for having a bit dated look/user interface. For me - sound quality is most important. I don't care about my dated Kenwood menu appearance because it's been super reliable and consistent. I'm always on the Apple CarPlay source anyways so I don't care what the other screens look like. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto looks the same on all of them. My bluetooth call quality isn't as good as Sony or Alpine (to be fair, I do have an older model, call quality has improved in newer models), but my Jeep stereo sounds flipping amazing. So figure out what features are most important to you and make your decision based on the brand/model that aligns closest to your important feature list.

      I'm not sure what the US equivalent would be, that kind of looks like our INE-W970HD. Honestly I tell most clients all of these newer heads unit are not iPod compatible. If they really want to use one, I have them bring in the device and we test it with the radio.
      I'm assuming the iPod you have is at least something newer like an iTouch with a lightning connection on it. If you're talking about anything earlier generation or just a straight up iPod with lightning connection, I don't believe it's compatible.
      The manual does state if you're using an iPhones and trying to use an iPod at the same time there may be streaming or iPod control conflict and if the problems persists, they say to remove the iPhone and reconnect. I think it basically sees both the iPhone and iPod as the same type of device and it can only read from one or be connected to one at a time (including Bluetooth connection on the iPhone).

A notification would pop up my s22ultra "looking for Android auto" but never finds it. Pressing the android auto icon on the head unit goes to the device list and shows it's already connected to the phone . Even tried updating the firmware and still no go.

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому +1

      I actually did test my co-worker's Android in this video and it was very stubborn to switch between devices once I had 2 different phones and the knob paired up. You can see that at 11:42. And then the radio seemingly lost memory of the S21, but then it came back. It was really quirky. I honestly don't normally see issues with Android Auto and this radio (wired or wireless). If ever do, this is the recommendation.
      You'll need to go into settings on the radio, about and select "Reset" which will restore all settings to default. This is like a hard reset SO prior to doing that, take note of any and all audio settings. Then cycle the ignition. After that clear the memory in your phone and try re-pairing. Kind of sounds like you've possibly already tried that with the firmware update, but not sure if you cleared the memory from the phone when you did the firmware update.
      I don't know if Android has this, but in Apple, there is a separate "CarPlay" settings menu and with Apple, you need to go in there and forget the device as well (sometimes, honestly depends on the radio). If Android has something like that, you'll want to do that too in addition to unpair/forget the device under Bluetooth.
      For added measure, the other thing you can try doing is go into the app manager for Android Auto and I know you can't uninstall the app, but I believe by selecting that, it reverts to the previous version of Android Auto. Then you can re-install the latest and I've had to do that for just a few clients who's phones were being really stubborn. I don't know why, but that seems to work better than simply clearing the cache in the app. It's also possible you missed a permission setting in the phone on that 1st initial connection? After restoring the app and making that initial connection, if Android asks for any permissions to operate Android Auto, agree to all permissions. If you miss one, it can easily throw off seamless connection. I hope that helps!

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому

      Thanks Jason - what's the year, make and model vehicle? Do you need something iDatalink Maestro compatible for your vehicle? Does it have to have wireless CarPlay/Android Auto? If you don't need full Maestro compatibility for your vehicle and are okay with wired connection, the iLX-W650 has a similar EQ set up where there is an advanced 9-band parametric, but also an easy option with bass, mid and treble. No knobs though. It's going to be tough to find something like that with knobs in a 7-inch model because of the aspect ratio Android Auto is designed to work in, unless you go with something with a larger floating screen. Even then, I can't think of any with knobs with an easy EQ feature like that.
      If you're utilizing an aftermarket amp and can go without fader control, one option is to integrate a universal bass knob like an SSLC from PAC Audio. It's just RCA in, RCA out. I've done that before for clients that had to have a volume knob. You could do the KTA-450 4-channel which mounts right to the back of the iLX-W650 chassis and wire in the universal RCA style knob for a volume control. Just keep in mind you'd lose fader function in that example because we'd only be using one set of RCA's for the amp since that knob only accepts one RCA input/output. I hope that's helpful!

      So in the 2004 Passat you won't need the advanced iDatalink Maestro RR. That's for cars where things like climate controls and vehicle settings actually go through the factory radio. In your case you can use a more basic steering wheel control adapter like a Metra AXSWC (which you may already have?) and the iLX-W650 will work with that. The XAV-AX210 was a pretty nice unit, but I do think you will find the Alpine a bit smoother on the top end and a slightly more responsive screen. But from a sound quality perspective, using apps like Tidal, Apple Music with Lossless, Amazon HD on your smartphone, you can get better than CD quality. Did you ever dabble with DVD audio discs? They didn't really take off, but they were higher quality than CD. We used to do a side by side comparison demo in our shop years ago when we used to sell the DVI-9990 Alpine F#1 Status system. If you remember the quality of those DVD audio discs, with these apps on our phones, you can have quality like that, but in the palm of your hand which is really convenient. So they got that part down right, but it would be great if they could do that and still make the overall function easier/more intuitive for end use consumers. Thanks for watching!

    The EQ settings are garbage, the PEQ lowest band can go down to 25hz but the second lowest band can only go down to ~65hz, so they don't overlap at all, leaving some frequencies untouched.
    After reversing (e.g. out of my driveway every morning) it shows nothing but a black screen with an image of a car on it, and none of the buttons get it back to the regular menus, unless I have music playing from my phone, then one of the buttons successfully switches to CarPlay. So I need use my phone to start spotify, THEN I can exit back to CarPlay and control it from my phone...

Would it damage anything if I just cut off the wiring for both? I can fit the head unit with them on but I’d rather have less clutter back there. Yea I know it sounds stupid but…

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому +1

      I feel your pain, but I would not cut anything off the head unit, you can risk shorting it out. I would cut the cavity behind the dash instead. That's necessary in a lot of vehicle installations and is usually described in the dash kit guide as "Sub dash modification required". I hope that helps!
      EDIT - if you're talking about a Wrangler JK you need to remove the sub radio bracket, there are two 7 mm bolts in the top corners and that will free up space for you.

      @@carstereochick I have a TJ. But thanks for the heads up. I’ll leave them alone. I managed to cram a test fit in this morning without any further mods to the dash. It’s not ideal but it will do. I was able to tuck everyone down under so it doesn’t block the cooling fan. I originally planned on buying the stubbier ilx-650 which would have had a ton of room back there but I switched to the 507 when I saw the wireless car play.
      On a side note, would you trust mounting the KTA-450 Amp on top of the 507 with some sort of stand off bracket? At first glance it fits perfect up there, but I’m not sure if the two of them piggybacked would generate too much heat. There would be about an inch of breathing room between them.
      Thanks for the response! ✌️

    • @carstereochick

      Great question - we have mounted the KTA-450 in tight spaces like that using metal brackets when we install it with anything other than a iLX-W650 or iLX-407. If you can get an inch of breathing room between the two, that should be sufficient. I know sometimes we mount small amps like that in these vehicles in the driver's side upper kick/steering column area too.

      This is really a personal choice. I have very sensitive ears especially to top end frequencies. I find the Kenwood eXcelon models like the DMX1057XR or DMX958XR to be smoother and more pleasing to my ears with everything flat. The Alpine can sound a bit thin with everything flat. I've heard this from other clients and in the comments section. Having said that, we did spend some time listening to both and tweaked the EQ a bit to make it sound more like the Kenwood does flat. I like that there is a lot more audio control in the iLX-507 than there is in the DMX958XR (if we're comparing similar price points). The Alpine iLX-507 is a fantastic value for what it gives you. However, I am not a fan of the lack of responsiveness on the screen though, you'll want to use the up/down arrows to adjust the EQ (not sure if you saw that at 4:40). For reference, in case you haven't seen it, here is discussion on the sound quality/EQ curve with the 507 to make it sound fuller - ua-cam.com/video/TSdQj1DbaZ8/v-deo.html

Not only that, but I have had consistent the following since purchasing in February: After initial boot up of the radio, it takes 5-7 seconds to auto connect to CarPlay. This is the same when traveling to multiple destinations and starting and turning off the vehicle. The unit will automatically connect to my CarPlay the last phone it connected each time, so if a different phone was connected prior to yours, all you have to do is hit settings, device list, and connect to your phone only 1 time. If you don't switch it, I have not had to do it again ever unless a different phone was connected. I have not tried android auto yet to tell yet.

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому

      So JVC is a sister company to Kenwood. The 875, feature wise, seems pretty similar to a Kenwood DMX958XR (LDAC, 5 volt) but with a resistive touch screen. I just tested the pre-amp on the DMX709s which is a wired CP/AA/more entry level model, different OS, but also rated at 5 volt. The results of that test were disappointing (ua-cam.com/video/z-K8XsgCc9w/v-deo.html)
      Next week I have a video on the DMX958XR pre-amp test going up. Typically Kenwood/JVC share components, just different GUI. If you're using aftermarket amplifiers and pre-amp voltage is important, you'll probably want to go with Alpine. If you prefer the tonal character of JVC/Kenwood eXcelon and only care about higher voltage on the sub pre-out, go with the JVC. I'm assuming the JVC performs just like the Kenwood I just tested. In general, I find Kenwood to be less quirky than Alpine. I don't do much with JVC, but I assume they're using similar OS in the background (Linux?) and similarly reliable. That's my 2 cents. Coming from a someone who's had both Alpine and Kenwood in various vehicles over 20+ years. Currently running an older Kenwood DMX7704s in my own vehicle (back then - the ratings were accurate so I'm actually getting 4 volts). I hope that's helpful!

    Quirky is a good word for this head unit. I have it and it's super quirky from the low responsive screen on EQ page to not having a clock when android auto or apple carplay is connected. There is a spot for the clock but no clock. I've also pretty much given up getting apple carplay to work properly. Half the time it works and the other half I only get bluetooth to function. I would have expected better from Alpine. My generic android head unit in my rock crawler works better than this thing.

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  2 місяці тому

      I'm sorry for the quirks. I will say when it 1st came out and when I made this video it was very quirky, but Alpine has released many updates since it came out that has resolved pretty much all the wireless connectivity issues we saw. Have you installed the latest firmware update? If you do, be sure to do the full reset at the end of the update. Just keep in mind that will completely restore all settings so take note of any audio settings before doing the reset after the update.
      Also - the clock is set on the radio automatically by the GPS antenna. When Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is connected, it's just piping it from your phone onto the display. If the GPS antenna is under the dash, you might have to relocate it to the top left or right corner of your dash or just make sure it's not getting blocked by any metal.
