Rip Stuart, queen of winter throned still is untouchable with its guitar work. Anything Stuart had a part in is the reason I loved those albums the most. If only COF could have stayed on the same track as it was with Stuart I think the band wouldn’t have become so stale in later years.
Really enjoyed this one, and the one with barker. I was obsessed with cradle back in the day and I had so many’s questions that have pretty much been answered here. Stuart seems really down to earth 👍
I discovered cradle in the 90s, and though it's probably not a popular opinion, I still really like some of what they're doing, but what a fantastic interview this is. I just found out he passed on, such a pity.

Great interview. I always considered Stuart the most important member ever. Cruelty is the best album ever. Stuart is on Vempire which is incredible but not on the Principle Of Evil Made Flesh. Stuart is on Cruelty but is not on Midian (which is OK but not anywhere near Cruelty's brilliance).
Yes, I stand by my opinion that Midian is far from the meisterwerk many fans proclaim it to be. And agreed, Stu is such an essential aspect of CoF yet so overlooked. Glad you liked the chat!
@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast The thing is Midian has its great moments. Vempire, Dusk and Cruelty are great moments from start to finish. I get that the Vempire and Dusk material was already written for the most part but Stuart improved it tenfold to make these albums the masterpieces they are.

i still prefer Vempire over Dusk . perfect mix (Nick drumming is unbelievable) and on spot blend between BM & Goth. Dusk is way to gothy imo and Cruelty the mix is terrible. Damnation and a day is the best COF post Midian
Cruelty is hands down the best Cradle album. The best guitar work by far. I was utterly disappointed with the following album especially expecting something good after such an ass kicking album. It’s truly a shame they couldn’t retain that lineup for another follow up…I will add the remix from a couple years back that beefed up the drum sounds absolutely crushing!
Allender is good in his own right and I actually enjoyed Midian (probably the last Cradle record I did enjoy), but Stuart was hands-down the best guitarist they ever had.
Have to say I am thoroughly enjoying this interview! Stuart is answering all of the questions I have always wondered. Cruelty is the best album Cradle has ever made, and Stuart’s writing and playing on that album - as well as other material from that era - has always been such a huge influence. That album was a masterpiece and one of the best metal albums of all time thanks to Stuart’s substantial contributions Great interview, thank you!
'Lustmord & Wargasm' was my first taste of 'Cruelty' when it appeared on a Metal Hammer compilation CD in '98. Playing along to it on a black BC Rich Warlock not knowing that Stuart was already a Warlock player. His riffing on that album and on 'Dusk' was very influential and was a joy to learn those parts and play along to them as a 20 year old at the time. Nu Metal was dominating the airwaves (was NOT a fan) during the latter half of the 90's and it was an escape and sigh of relief to listen to Cradle who kept the spirit of extreme metal alive. Thanks for your contributions to metal, Stuart! A really insightful and intelligent 4 hour discussion on Stuart's great legacy! Gonna listen to it again now! RIP fella! 🎸🤘
I got Vempire when it came out and it really made an impact on me since I didn't really care for the first album that much. I thought Stuart really stood apart.
Great idea to interview the members of the golden era. Thanks for these great podcasts ! I discovered Cradle in 1995 with Principle. The best effort will always be Vempire for me (Queen of Winter being the best track ever). However I highly disagree with your take on Midian. I know we all have different tastes but Midian has one of the best goth and dark ambience ever, top 3 easily. After Midian unfortunately, everything went garbage (last efforts are ok though).
Hail from Texas! In my opinion, Dusk...was Cradle's Master Of Puppets. I'm still still in the Black Metal underground, and most of us vets universally agree that we lost interest after Cruelty.
Great and interesting interview, you guys never made me get bored! Stuart is a very talented guitarist, a total pleasure to listen to. Both "Dusk and Her Embrace" and "Cruelty and The Beast" are for me the greatest masterpieces for Cradle of Filth (but I must say that Cruelty is more melodic than Dusk). No matter how much the band has tried to return back to those glorious days, these two releases are unreachable when it comes to talent and emotion!...
@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast and I also agree with you when it comes to the guitars in Midian. Midian may be a well written and really melodramatic album (but not as well written as Cruelty), but it's kind of formulaic to me. I mean there's nothing new and mind-blowing that would excite me and make me love it for what it is. Most of the elements there have been in the previous albums and were much, much better than those found there. It seems that Cradle started copying themselves. In the end, Midian shows a big fact about black metal. Black metal itself is a very serious genre when it comes to the music: if you don't take things seriously, it leaves you forever.
What a great interview. If you get a chance to do more could you ask about the writing of Vempire? I'm guessing Stuart must have written Queen of Winter and Rape and Ruin of Angels. They're two of my all time fav tracks but I'm hazy on who was involved with their creation... Especially after finding out Paul wrote most of Dusk.
Yeah that comes up a lot, Vempire. I must confess even though I bought it back in 96, once I heard Dusk I barely listened to Vempire. I think the production isn’t as vast as Kit’s on Dusk which put me off at the time. If Stuart and I ever chat again I’ll definitely dive into the songwriting a lot more.
If one doesn't know all albums, they can't know the whole band and its entire life up to now. CoF does have fantastic new albums and videos, they are still very much alive and kicking, and it's not enough to just cut a breaking point after their 2 or 3 best albums from the 90s and then I stopped listening and now this is my valid opinion of the whole band up to this point. They still play their old songs and embrace the band's history, they have fantastic stage performances (just watch their two Bloodstock performances from 2019 and 2021). If one says they respect the band, they gotta know what the band is up to until the present and the entire spectrum they've created, the wide variety and styles. Cradle is like a great and expensive wine. Plus we're now in our late thirties, fourties or older. It will be impossible to get another first kiss or fall in love for the first time again. Cruelty was great and it has its place - I loved Dusk even more - but that's there and the current litany of albums CoF has made all have their own unique character. Some resonate more than others but saying "all after Cruely is shit" is nonsense and that's got nothing to do with their sour grapes but with our own. That all said... Thanks for some invaluable interviews. Metal \m/
Recently I gave another listen to Midian and man, that album doesn't suck at all, it's a massive album! Saffron's curse, just read along to the lyrics. Heck, even so is From the Cradle to Enslave!! Art in its purest form!! Andrew, I've listened to more than a few of your interviews now and I'll just be frank, it sounds like you're taking a really predetermined angle with them. With Lindsay you were trying hard to get confirmation for the "Dani and the Filths" perspective which to them was nothing more than a funny joke, and I get a feeling that your general aim is to get some confirmation for the idea that it's all Dani's fault that the band had so many members, their sound isn't like Cruelty, and that Dani is some kind of power obsessed Napoleon. But the reality is just very different and you could see that if you could take a listen to their many albums and set your disappointment aside. If you listen to any album, they're all on Spotify, and compare it to the four cornerstones, Principle, VEmpire, Dusk and Cruelty, you will hear that *all* new albums contain similar elements to these four in some way or another. Plus, bands are allowed to explore. Plus, CoF is a band that tours a lot and for months at a time, and it's never a given that band members will remain friends and not get fed up throughout the tours in their really tiny shared mobile homes i.e. the tour bus. Plus, you have an interest in 4 or 5 years of a band that has really progressed for over 30 years, but, you stopped listening after Midian which you really dislike YET you are trying to add a current day perspective to the band's entire 30+ year repertoire. I honestly think yours is not a fair angle, and you're not doing this band any justice by how you are conducting your interviews when trying to dig up shit and delivering your own commentary all biased towards your own disappointment. It's within their right to explore and switch members as often as they want and experiment and share those experiments with the audience! In simple terms just stop being so wrecking negative and at the very least get up to speed with what the band has been doing, the albums, the tours, the shows and how the godforsaken pandemic has affected everything. Show some respect don't just dig up shit and stir it with your fingers. Right now it's just sour grapes from the sad point of view that the band kind of died after Cruelty. Well it bloody didn't! Cradle rocks and they're like a fine wine, takes time to mature!! Time to highlight their massive successes too!
@@Ancipital_ You’ve created a bit of a strawman there, so I’m not going to respond in kind, but you have offered support to the show elsewhere. I’ll use this as an opportunity to address a few things and reiterate some long-held views for everyone reading: • My interest in the band is from 1994-1999; I have heard the albums crafted since, and it’s the sound of a very different band and not one I enjoy • The chats with Dani, Richard and Lindsay were all organised through their agent due to album releases or Australian tours. I was invited to participate, so I thought, why not? The trade-off is that I’m obliged to focus on the catalyst for the conversation and not wander too broadly into the subject matter I’d rather discuss • I invited Ben, Greg, Paul, Stuart, Nick and Was onto the show, and I gave all editorial oversight; you are hearing what they want you to hear • Yes, of course, I have an agenda. I want to discuss the old days. People are overwhelmingly responding positively to the conversations, which is added incentive to keep seeking an audience with the old band members and discuss what could have been. • As so many have expressed to me, I, too, am beyond disappointed the Clive Barker concept album featuring Stu, Les, and Nick didn’t eventuate. I’ve heard Stu’s Bastard Sun demo, and believe me… the riffs and guitar leads are gargantuan, truly majestic. The Cruelty follow-up had all the ingredients to be the band’s magnum opus • There are many channels and episodes out there focusing on the new stuff and talking up Dani’s career acumen. You won’t hear me doing that or talking up material post the new millennium because I choose not to • As Dani is the one constant in the band as musicians, staff, crew, and management change, it is entirely reasonable to ask questions and hypothesise what’s going on • Paul carried the band from Midian to his exit, and as much I want to say more, I can’t. But forget about the band and his guitar playing; Paul is a good bloke, a genuinely exceptional fella, and deserved much better. Read into that what you will • I will continue to hope that Les, Robin, Sara, Fay Woolven, Mike Exeter, Jan Peter Genkel, Paul Ryan, Jon Pritchard (AKA Kennedy), Rishi Mehta, Mags Magoolagan, Danielle Cottington and Dan Spriggs all accept an invitation to appear on the show *Dave Hirschheimer has very politely declined to chat* RIP Andrea Haugen. I’ll leave it at that. I’m easily found on social media and through www.scarsandguitars.com if anyone wants to chat. Peace.
@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast alright mate fair enough and yes, i did offer my support and will continue to do so, you are a very good interviewer and you're able to get your interviewees to open up and share some very interesting stories. The thing about it being the sound of a different band now, alright, agree to disagree on that. The only thing I want to say is that there isn't necessarily a good versus bad story here but an evolution of a band with Dani's characteristic vocals and lyrics, not always as good, but, overall commendable. So my comment was made in good faith, just expressing my thoughts after having binged most of the interviews 😆 watch out for tunnel vision, but you did put hard work into those interviews, so lots of thanks for that. I had some worries but also thanks for allowing me to express those, and will gladly be watching what the future holds in store mate cheers.

1:19:02 that's christmas '95, live along with Gorgoroth and Primordial. Mostly notorious because a brainless dude threw a beer bottle at Dani at the beginning of "Nocturnal Supremacy" because Dani didn't use corpse paint at some lives...
Oh yeah. I stand in contrast to the more popular opinions stressed on here. Got into COF through Nymphetamine. Love all their CD's but the more "mainstream" ones were gems.
mad thing about this when he (stuart) first joined in may 95 ' he said from september 95 they played and on some dates where he was the sole guitarist' i went watching them at brandford rios in about june 96 where they did all the vempire stuff with demolition supporting them but there is no record of that concert on setlist site just the one later in november at bradford i think did anyone else attend this gig or has a bootleg copy of it ' id love to see it again they played with 2 guitarists that night ' must have been brian hipp i had the fucking setlist dani handed me 'but its got lost over years
Dusk and Cruelty are by far my favorite cof records. Loved Stuarts stuff! Great interview. Midian is a great record. I have to disagree with you on that one.
All good Brian and thx for listening. I know a heap of people disagree with me about Midian but it's the album that put me off for good as a fan. I've since developed a sincere appreciation for Paul Allender's contribution though.
Are you writing a book about the history of Cradle of Filth if so when/where can I get it?? I’m just like you big fan from the 90s era and Vempire is my favorite album of all time.
Yes, I’m keen to write the book. I’d love to chat with the following people before I start writing : Kit Woolven, Mike Exeter, the Ryan brothers, Was Sarginson, Danielle Cottington and the big ones, Robin Eaglestone and Les Smith. Hope it happens. If anyone out there can put me in touch with any one of them I’d appreciate it. Someone’s already helped connect me to Ben Ryan.

I liked everything up to Cruelty, but I think when Adrian joined on drums, I think the songwriting changed. Midian and Bitter Suites were brilliant releases. But after that I think they kind of went further down hill.
Funny because I have loved be quick or be dead version since I heard it. And bought Lovecraft and Witch Hearts. Freaking great collection. And sorry to say it’s hard to compare them but I like the Quick version better for the death vocal solo and overall way better sound from Dusk. Plus way better vocals too. One time I saw them live Dani messed up the lyrics on that song haha. But looking around I was like hey I’m the only one that even noticed. Haha.
check out this version of the bathory aria ua-cam.com/video/O2JJetXZioM/v-deo.html it's an "unfinished" mix that somehow got on a not for resale promo cd of cruelty.
I have been a fan since 95 and have to disagree with the take on Midian and Pauls axe work. I feel Paul has had to form his guitar around what ever style Danni is into that album. Midian might be the best album Iron Maiden never done, but it is a tour deforce, a dark majestic classic, some of the later ones are a bit shite some are really decent
Paul is an exceptional bloke, a fella I’d be glad to call a mate. I may not be as big a fan of his guitar work as Stuart’s, but any commentary I have about Paul is not intended to diminish his contribution. I say what I feel, and I say it within the context of the moment. I’ve said in the intro to my chat with Paul that I didn’t necessarily understand the importance of his contribution to the band. I now believe he is the group’s most crucial guitarist. Without Paul, the band wouldn’t have survived post-Midian. There are things Paul has shared with me that I can’t share because he’s asked me not to, but he has a tremendous story to tell about his time in the band. Hopefully, he’ll do that after enough time has passed.
How could you…. Midian is absolutely fucking amazing. And nothing but melodic. Be a close tie to Cruelty for me. Lord Abortion is insane. Plus hello Her ghost in the fog? @@Amp661 Cryptoriana is just decent. Stuart Anstis shouldn’t be fired. I have to be honest but the cruelty lineup (including Sarah) should be ones doing the Cruelty And The Beast anniversary tour
@@lukeskywalkerjediknight2.013 that would have been cool for a cruelty lineup revisited, but that era has broken off on their own thing. Robin and Les just disappeared, Nick is on slight bitter terms with Dani, Gian lives in Canada as well as bad terms with Stuart, and Sarah I don't know. I guess somethings are best left to the past.
I absolutely love these past Cradle member interviews. They really clear up a lot and you ask really insightful questions that don't seem to pry into uncomfortable areas. If you ever get Dani on again, it would be great to know what happened to the Vamperotica clothing line in the 90s and if they would even consider making those fantastic longsleeves again. That was my favorite part of the band's experience, next to the music of course and it would be a big waste to not revive it, especially now that we don't need to mail in our orders anymore and can do it from their website. Great interview and I will definitely watch your other ones! \m/

Fair enough mate, thanks for listening
Really enjoyed that again fantastic chat very insightful x
Thx Tom, appreciated mate 🍺
_RIP Stuart..._
_...Big loss for COF!_
Wow I didn't realize Gian was such a pain the ass 😪 great interview excellent 👏
Hail from Texas! In my opinion, Dusk...was Cradle's Master Of Puppets. I'm still still in the Black Metal underground, and most of us vets universally agree that we lost interest after Cruelty.
Hi mate thx for tuning in 🍻
Great and interesting interview, you guys never made me get bored!
Great observations, thx mate!
@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast also, do you know if I can find that damn album of Ninepence in youtube? I want as hell to listen to Stuart's compositions!
@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast Vempire is amazing. The quality of songs is great.
Queen of Winter Throned is brilliant.
I’ll use this as an opportunity to address a few things and reiterate some long-held views for everyone reading:
• My interest in the band is from 1994-1999; I have heard the albums crafted since, and it’s the sound of a very different band and not one I enjoy
• The chats with Dani, Richard and Lindsay were all organised through their agent due to album releases or Australian tours. I was invited to participate, so I thought, why not? The trade-off is that I’m obliged to focus on the catalyst for the conversation and not wander too broadly into the subject matter I’d rather discuss
• I invited Ben, Greg, Paul, Stuart, Nick and Was onto the show, and I gave all editorial oversight; you are hearing what they want you to hear
• Yes, of course, I have an agenda.
The Cruelty follow-up had all the ingredients to be the band’s magnum opus
• There are many channels and episodes out there focusing on the new stuff and talking up Dani’s career acumen. You won’t hear me doing that or talking up material post the new millennium because I choose not to
• As Dani is the one constant in the band as musicians, staff, crew, and management change, it is entirely reasonable to ask questions and hypothesise what’s going on
• Paul carried the band from Midian to his exit, and as much I want to say more, I can’t. But forget about the band and his guitar playing; Paul is a good bloke, a genuinely exceptional fella, and deserved much better. Read into that what you will
• I will continue to hope that Les, Robin, Sara, Fay Woolven, Mike Exeter, Jan Peter Genkel, Paul Ryan, Jon Pritchard (AKA Kennedy), Rishi Mehta, Mags Magoolagan, Danielle Cottington and Dan Spriggs all accept an invitation to appear on the show *Dave Hirschheimer has very politely declined to chat*
RIP Andrea Haugen.

RIP, Stuart Anstis!😪
I saw Cradle at Bradford Rios in 1996 with just Stuart on guitar……sounded great and genuinely surprised Cradle still sounded like Cradle.
I feel so much also that we miss on great music.... also Adrian once said in an interview that is best time in cradle was when he meet his wife.. Morigan who was a model for cradle at time. (sory for my english) We must have the full show release of the 1998 Astoria... we only have Malice, Cruelty, Dusk and Beneath... just look at the full setlist...
Ave Satani
Dusk and Her Embrace
Summer Dying Fast
Beneath the Howling Stars
Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids
Funeral in Carpathia
The Twisted Nails of Faith
The Black Goddess Rises
Venus in Fear
Malice Through the Looking Glass
The Forest Whispers My Name
To Eve the Art of Witchcraft
Hell Awaits
(Slayer cover)
Ebony Dressed for Sunset
I was there! I've got the whole show on a bootleg VHS, but I've no way of getting it digital. It was a fantastic gig!
Great interview and RIP Stuart but Midian was a great album, that part was nonsense.

R.I.P Stuart Anstis 🤘
1:19:02 that's christmas '95, live along with Gorgoroth and Primordial. Mostly notorious because a brainless dude threw a beer bottle at Dani at the beginning of "Nocturnal Supremacy" because Dani didn't use corpse paint at some lives...
Here's an idea... start a new band and use your demos with Nick, Les, robin and Jon (ex Hecate enthroned vocalist).
Best idea ever - I’d love to see that material appear. One of the best songwriting partnerships in metal history.
Sad that we lost both Stuart and Jon in the meantime
I think Midian is awesome. Just like Vempire or Dusk.
Oh yeah. I stand in contrast to the more popular opinions stressed on here. Got into COF through Nymphetamine. Love all their CD's but the more "mainstream" ones were gems.

mad thing about this when he (stuart) first joined in may 95 ' he said from september 95 they played and on some dates where he was the sole guitarist'
i went watching them at brandford rios in about june 96 where they did all the vempire stuff with demolition supporting them but there is no record of that concert on setlist site just the one later in november at bradford i think
did anyone else attend this gig or has a bootleg copy of it ' id love to see it again
they played with 2 guitarists that night ' must have been brian hipp
i had the fucking setlist dani handed me 'but its got lost over years
I LOVE the Beauty Slept in Sodom solo!!
thank you so much
Dusk and Cruelty are by far my favorite cof records.
BC Rich played it smart with that deal. I ended up buying an NJ Warlock and Ironbird. Got me.
Just learnt of Stuart's death aged 48. Gutted.
I miss Stuart in Cradle. The new stuff, and stage antics are off-putting.
@@ScarsandGuitarspodcast Sarah Jezebel Deva has also rejoined the music scene, as she was with them for 14 year, getting to interview her as well would be an incredible addition and quite integral to any CoF biography.
@@Orvaen We’ve corresponded via email, she’s not keen on discussing her time in CoF unfortunately
Is the book still in the making ? Were you able to get a hold on Les? Great great content mate 🙏
Awesome thanks! No luck with Les just yet, or Robin either. I want to chat with Kit Wolven, Jan Peter Genkel, the Ryan brothers, and Adrian Erlandsson too. They were all there in the 90s. Adrian and I communicate so I hope I can lock him down for a chat soon. I've had an email exchange with SJD but she's not all that keen to guest on the podcast, I'll ask her for a quote or two for the book and hope she wants to contribute. Hi Brett, here’s a chat with Dani: player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=134486 . The recent one that was booked didn’t happen, a Nuclear Blast comms rep got the date wrong so I hope I get another chance to chat to Mr Daniel Davey

Thanks for this..

Midian is the only post-Stuart record I fully like. Crytoriana and all those other ones I don't like the new sound.
