1983 300SD engine rocking after new motor mount

  • The engine was vibrating and shaking badly before I replaced the driver's side motor mount and transmission mount. The driver's side mount came out in pieces. The passenger side looks to be in good condition. Now the engine rocks from side to side at idle. I probably could not tell the problem existed due to the bad mount. I'm still troubleshooting the problem but with limited time after work.

Yes, I did change the mounts myself. It is not that difficult. Plenty of articles online about it. The rocking of the engine is possibly from a worn rack damper bolt.

The shaking is normal for probably the first 100 miles or so. The rubber is new and it will be a little bouncy at first, but that goes away as the engine "settles in" so to say. Shouldn't worry about the spongy'ness just carry on.

It's worth a look. I removed the engine shocks from my other 300SD and it idles smoothly. The car in the video has one shock connected and the other is not. I'll remove both and see if that does anything.

I changed the mounts in my car and ran into the same problem, the dreaded side to side shake and it started right after I did the mounts. could you please tell me what parts are required for the delivery valves in the injection pump? Is it a DIY process or did you have to take it to a shop to get it done? After the delivery valves were replaced did the IP timing have to be adjusted?
I didn't see any diesel fuel seepage on your IP in this video? Usually the delivery valve seals go bad or in your case did you completely replace the delivery valves, all 5 of them or did you just do the delivery valve seals?

In my case, I needed to replace the delivery valves and their crush washers on the injection pump. I went through a lot of other maintenance before that, so be sure your injectors and valves are working to specification. Check your prechambers while the injectors are out, as well. Idle speed adjustment and rack damper bolt adjustment can help in certain situations.

Hmm. Did you change them yourself? I need to change mine soon because the driver-side motormount has collapsed. Hope you can fix it easily. Thanks for sharing.

    Just changed mine.
Maybe the rocking could also be the engine shocks or engine shock mounts? I don't have an engine shock or engine shock mount installed on my drivers side and the engine is rocking a little bit also. Maybe you have a similar problem with your engine shocks or engine shock mount?
Just a wild guess, you know more about it than I. Best of luck.

Start with a compression test. Looks like a dead cylinder to me. A leaking exhaust valve does this too. Broken cam lobe... a few different reasons. Compression test!

That was one of the things I did when rebuilding and replacing the injectors. Amazingly, all cylinders tested at 420-450 PSI. I recently replaced the rack damper bolt with the upgraded style and no change in shaking. I think I may need to perform a second valve adjustment since the PO ran straight WVO and probably coked up the valves. By now, I have blown out any carbon residue and the valves likely need to be adjusted because of that. I have yet to do any millivolt readings but I installed 5 new GPs, so now is the best time.

I am replacing engine shocks and engine mounts on my 300d (turbo) sedan.
Did you find it necessary to replace engine shock dampers (they are fairly expensive) ?

I have two 300SD sedans and both have the engine shocks deleted. Both cars idle smoothly and there is no vibration in the cabin. The shocks are not needed.

    Did you ever diagnose?

    hello,
I have the same problem with my 300SD.
Have you already solved the problem?
    Was it the engine mounts?
Or rather settings on the injection pump?
    Greetings from Germany.
    Peter

      Patrick,
Replacing the delivery valves in the injection pump solved this particular problem. Still do troubleshooting because I can't guarantee your shaking problem is caused by the same thing.

@@eatont9999 Same for me. I took my delivery valves out and put them into my $80 dollar ultrasonic cleaner and it took all the rust off of them and I put them back and now it doesn't shake at all. so smooth!

The motor mounts are on correctly. The problem was solved when I replaced the delivery valves in the injection pump. The engine runs smoothly now.
