When driving over raised terrain, going corner first decreases approach angle (so, it's what experienced off-roaders do when possible). Tucking the bumper corners up decreases it even more. Those cutouts make the Crosstrek Wilderness extremely capable for navigating ruts, hills, ditches, stairsteps and more, compared to other Crosstreks. You get to see a bit of that when we off-roaded one a couple weekends ago in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/V6iWcE0KnGA/v-deo.html Also, it's a multi-piece bumper so that owners no longer have to replace the entire bumper cover if the bottom corners or edges get ripped up off road.
So I've had mine 2 weeks and am very happy. Biggest things that matter to me, 1. Quite 2. Better gas mileage than most have experienced. 32 highway @60 miles an hour. 3. Seat comfort 4. Harmon Kardon is not worth it 5. Ride comfort Wish it had's 1Rear vents for my dog 2. manual transmission although Subaru has improved it's CVT measurably (I've owned way too many) 3. less body cladding
Good review! It's about time someone tested a more basic Wilderness with the standard seat. Personally, I found the manual seat comfortable. Stock radio sounds decent too and can live without a sunroof IMO. My Wilderness is new but love it so far :)
I went from a love of 4x4 ford rangers to a jeep wrangler to a crosstrex wilderness model brand new and I love it even after an ignition switch screwup that happened at about 100kms of use. the dealership was great at the instant service they provided. I imagine my shame when it turned out I was not pressing hard enough on the brake pedal for the AutoStart system to properly engage. now I'm a little paranoid but still loving my new vehicule
I'm pretty sure I test drove the same vehicle in this video. I ended up getting a lithium red wilderness with the 23 package from the same dealership. Loving it so far!
Awesome review. I picked the Wilderness for all the off road reasons you mentioned. However looks wise I like the limited exterior look the best. Hate the gold bling I hope to get used to ? If not I will get the black paint out.
I look forward to a Crosstrek Hybrid (2025?) with Toyota Hybrid tech, including their eCVT, which is simple and reliable (no belts or chains or cones, just a planetary gear set).
@matthewjohnson1211 if you wanna "tow" something your not buying this to start with, common sense tells 99% of folks that .... aka: the tow weight rating.
The CVT's aren't the primary issue, it's the valve body. Change the fluid every 40k and it'll outlast you. Think about it this way. Most that whine about it having a CVT have never owned one. How many vehicles has Subaru sold over the years? How many complaints have you read from "actual" owners? You're probably looking at 1/1000th of of 1% .... thats pretty damn good odds that you'd never have a problem.
@@danielfair4675 Well….it’s rated 3000 towing compactly or something…up here in Wisconsin I’ve seenCrosstrek’s towing boats, small travel trailers -so yes, people do tow things with them.
6 speed would be great with this.. Seems like a lot of Crosstrek/Impreza buyers still want the manual option. I always see these comments on the videos I do with them
If Subaru puts a turbo in these special models and gets rid of the weak link CVT crap transmission in all models and puts in a real transmission then they definitely would have a winner
New Toyota Camry will only be CVT. RAV4 hybrid is CVT. Same for Honda and many other brands also uses CVT Transmission. So your only choice for now on good car brand will be Mazda.
@@MuniTechnology we had a 2012 Subaru Outback with CVT that lasted 280,000. The transmission fail because I gave it to my daughter and she never took care of it like you should. Otherwise it would still be running.

just picked up a silver one. love everything about it.
A couple added points.... the X modes shut off above certain speeds, and the paddle shifters can also be used in the regular drive mode.
Xmode goes into standby once above 18 mph and cuts out completely at 25 mph.
happy owner of a forester wilderness so I'd stick with wilderness. if the price is close to a forester. I'd go with forester.

I'm personally not a fan of the plastic cladding. Other than that and the cvt, i guess it's fine.
The plastic cladding is everywhere nowadays on CUV/SUV's.

I really like Subaru ... but get rid of the CVT and put in a regular 8 speed auto in the thing. A 2.5 4cy should have at least 200 hp !
I really love the Wilderness trim, but my car is paid off and don't want to have another car payment.
