I just came back from San Antonio today. We visited all four of these missions on the mission trail as well as the Alamo. All sites are free and very accessible. It was nearly 100 degrees but it was a dry heat, just make sure you have some water with you and comfortable shoes. I saw these missions in 1993, thirty years ago, but I was much more impressed this time around. Maybe the spiritual feeling is easier to enter into you when you are older. There was a Spanish speaking family in Mission Espada’s church while I was there today. The mother was saying a prayer and coaching her children along in Spanish. I slowly backed out of the church so that I didn’t disturb them. San Antonio is awesome.

Unfortunately the Native Americans tribes with thier ancestors burried under theses missions are banned from doing prayers or religious ceremonies at these missions. These missions are the sites of brutal treatment of indigenous peoples

@@dojoflex that sounds pretty bad. I am Roman Catholic and I can understand why other religions’ rites might be banned in a Catholic Church. These missions in San Antonio aren’t museums. I thought Our Lady of Guadalupe brought Europeans and Indigenous Peoples together. My vote is that we acknowledge what happened but move forward in brotherhood. Maybe you are on the same page perhaps?

I visited both Mission Concepcion and Mission San Jose in summer 2013. I had an amazing time. San Antonio is an historically rich city.

Mission of San Jose is beautiful and the wall/ fortress is intact. The Alamo is missing most of the wall/fortress . It was destroyed decades ago . We went to an outdoor mass at San Jose Mission(an active parish) celebrated by the Archbishop.. See Mission San Jose!!!! About 6 miles from the famous Mission the Alamo.

Down-zoning is really going to give the surrounding areas a much classier feel. Glad that past. Just got back from Paris and couldnt imagine if they let Notre Dame be surrounded by No-Tell Motels and Muffler Shops.

The Spanish missionaries are sent here to do the colonization work of the Spanish empire. These missionaries were here to make the American Indian of South Texas into Spanish citizens who will follow the culture and lifestyle of a Spanish.
