Just wanted to take a minute to say what I love about your videos/style: They are always presented in a light-hearted, easy-going tone that exploration and adventure are all about. You don't overexplain or intellectualize travel, you simply enjoy the journey and present your experience, and I really like that
As a lifelong Texan from San Antonio, it is great seeing the Hill Country get some love. Such an awesome collection of towns and things to do. Some local intel about the park. It is pronounced Purrr-den-ales in spite of that pronunciation making no sense! Enjoyed the video!
Ive been thinking of moving to Texas, and people i asked acted like the Hill country wasnt anything impressive, idk why, this is gorgeous as hell. I love Florida but there isnt any scenery like this in the state. Btw , hows the wine over there??
Enjoyed your video of the Texas Hill Country. Not to be critical, but you missed the most rugged and beautiful part of the area. Just a few miles north from the Fredericksburg is the Willow City loop, a stunningly beautiful area especially in the spring when the wild flowers are in full bloom. The ruggedness of the hills and the wild flowers make it a must see. Also the Leakey, Vanderpool and Campwood area with the drive through the most rugged part of the hill country is gorgeous. In that area, you also have two of the most beautiful state parks, Lost Maples (my personal favorite) and Garner State Park., again a must see. Hope you can come back and complete your journey through the beautiful Texas Hill country.
Josh, you ALWAYS, ALWAYS bring out the highlights, and provide researched, knowledgeable, background info of the places you visit. This was another gem. Thank you, so much, for sharing this with us. I love that you included the eateries, as well.🌄☀️👏
I just wanna say THANK YOU. This video made us hop in the car and go down to Walden retreat this past weekend and it was an amazing experience. We also enjoyed Altstadt and the Rhinery. What a wonderful recommendation.
I’m from New Braunfels and it’s crazy to see how the area has grown over the last 20 years. Fun fact: our mascot is the Unicorns, lol. Glad you enjoyed your time in TX!
We are from New Zealand and visited the Texas hill country a few years ago which we loved. We also enjoyed Luckenbach - I was disappointed you didn’t visit there - it’s a fun place
Wow, the Texas Hill Country looks absolutely breathtaking! I've never been to Central Texas before, but this post definitely makes me want to visit. The rolling hills, rivers, and historic towns seem like the perfect place for a relaxing weekend getaway. And with so many wineries, distilleries, and breweries to explore, there's something for everyone. Thank you for sharing your experience, I can't wait to plan my own trip to the Texas Hill Country!
I live in Austin and will caution you the ‘hill country’ is nearly as large as some eastern US states so driving around in just this region can be daunting in duration (especially if you also want to take in Austin, San Antonio, Boerne, Banderas, Marble Falls, Llano, and so many TX towns)
So excited you enjoyed the hill country! My favorite place on earth! Enchanted Rock is a 30 year old Christmas tradition for our family! Sons now grandsons go. Maybe another time you can come for the Christmas parade and lights in Johnson City. There's so much to see it's hard in one weekend but you hit some good places. We live about 2 hours away, this is a go to place for us. The picture of my dogs was actually taken at Pedernales State Park. If you had time to do it , if you kept hiking around on the left you would have come up to one of the most beautiful spots at the park. I really enjoy your channel and am so glad you enjoyed our hill country and bluebonnets!
This is what I miss when I moved from Houston/Dallas back to Illinois. Such a variety of landscapes to see no matter where I went. Thanks for your trip and video. Love❤
So glad y'all had a good time. Ever back this way, in West Texas, hollar. I'll show you some awesome places but come in the spring or in October/November. Enjoy your videos so much!
It is so gratifying to see someone do a piece on the country part of the Hill Country. Often, the focus is on Austin but as a former Austinite, my favorite times were heading west out of town to the Pedernales Falls (which you could body slide down years ago) and into Fredericksburg. I noticed the buffalo on your cap and it made me think of the fun we've always had visiting Caprock State Park up in the Amarillo area. It's full of redrock canyons and the state's buffalo herd, which can be seen throughout the park including the campgrounds. Safe travel to you always.
So glad you liked the video and have seen all these spots! I would love to spend more time visiting state parks in Texas. So much beauty in that state!
My family lived in Wimberley for 4 years. I love all of these spots! In Pedernales Falls State Park, you can see water springing out of the ground in some areas. I miss these places so so much.
Gorgeous! Even if I visited Texas Hill Country , I would not get to hike like you do, so thanks for doing these videos so we can follow along virtually!
I've lived in Austin 65 of my 66 yrs and still haven't made it to Enchanted Rock, so it was nice to see your posted views. I do believe it will make a great, and very crowded, spot to view the Total Lunar Eclipse next Spring. It's also nice to see your wife have a chance to travel with you. Great video. Glad you got to enjoy our state. Safe travels.
I was in Hill country in early April, perfect weather, wine, bluebonnets and friends and family to visit. We lived there years ago. My cousins own Tatum Cellars wine tasting room in Johnson City, excellent! Loved your UA-cam.
Again another nice video, before visiting California , and using your tips, my wife and I used to go a lot of times to Austin Texas and The Hill Country always kept a place in my heart. We had no kids back then so we always went around spring and see the bluebonnet's all over the place. Thanks for showing these wonderful places.
Beautiful video. So fun and relaxing to watch. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd have to say it's the place you stayed, because it set the tone for the whole wonderful adventure. I also loved the flower seed farm. (Wow has Fredericksburg changed, but it's been a few decades since I've been, so, of course.)
I never heard of Texas hill country until Covid when I started following a you tube vlogger who teaches traditional cooking and ferments like how to make pickles and apple cider vinegar and other yummy and healthy meals and condiments. Thanks for showing what a lovely area of the US. Now I’m totally ready to check it out one day.
Good job folks! I really appreciate your videos on YT. I stayed some years ago in Texas and I think it's the best US country! I love it! Keep it going! 🎉
Texas Hill Country is going to be very busy next April during the total solar eclipse that will pass directly over the area on April 8, 2024! I hope to be in the area for that. Thanks for the video Josh! Hope to check out some of the places you saw in this video! Your videos really help me plan cool things to check out on my travels! Safe travels!
The hike up Enchanted Rock reminds me of the hike to Delicate Arch in Arches. Beautiful sights. I didn’t realize this was in Texas. I always enjoy the info you give because you cover it all. I can plan trips straight off your videos!
There is also a butte next to the rock which requires much more climbing, as in hands and feet but it's worth the effort for those that can make it. It is flat on top with grass, surrounded by rock. Kind of a round top. They may have made an easier way to get there. I climbed it decades ago.
Love the hill country. Live in DFW area. Another place you might enjoy is the Wimberley, Texas area. Beautiful tall hills, forests and the Blanco River are things you'll see there. Great places to dine around the square and neat little shops. Swimming holes around, like the blue hole, hiking trails. Didn't see and do everything we wanted to. Want to visit the places I haven't seen in this video. Thanks for sharing.
My wife and I enjoy your videos very much! Your quiet enthusiasm and the information you provide is outstanding. Enjoy your dad's comments. You travel well together.
The Hill Country is what we call our play ground. Perdenales can go from sleepy to flash flood in just a few minutes. Always check the weather upriver from there. Fredricksburg has a lot of WWII historical museums. Fantastic place to visit.
Thanks for the vid. Love your channel. I was in hill country today and your vid helped me decide on some things to do. Padernales Falls was awesome and the peach cobbler and cider at Das Peach Haus was amazing. So much cinnamon….and I approve too!!! Thanks again. 😎
Just returned from a trip to Texas Hill Country. Thanks again, Josh!!!! My family had an amazing time and it's because of your suggestions. Das Peach Haus, Enchanted Rock, and the Rhinory were just some of our favorite things! Being the family trip planner, you have made my life easier ❤️
Amazing video, Josh. If I had one choice to stay in entire state of Texas, I would pick Walden's Retreat. Looks so relaxing. I would spend the entire weekend there and not leave.
When I was a kid/teen, my dad and his pal leased a hunting ranch out in southwest Texas. It was like desert and hot as blazes in the summer. When winter came, we always went and stayed a couple times during the hunting season. Usually a week or two at a time. I gets really cold in the winter, we even had snow at times. Now at the ripe old age of 53, it's time for me to take my family out there for a couple weeks. And living in south Louisiana, its not all that far that one could drive out on a rode trip for a week or so. We were about 50 miles southwest of Rocksprings. Cool landscapes for sure...
Johnson City, Texas my birthplace..Fredericksburg is my moms birthplace..Enchanted Rock, don't how many times we climbed that is kids..Luckenback is not to far from Fredericksburg which is my dads birthplace..Thanks for the Texas video..Brought back lots of good memories.
@@ThroughMyLens Oh yeah lots of changes..My grandparents lived in Fredericksburg where the annual family reunion was held.. They lived right across the street from the turkey plant..We use to walk around the whole town..Still have relatives pin Fredericksburg and surrounding area. ✌
How fun for you and Amy! That last sunset, with the orange reflection on the river was amazing! I hope you got a shot of that. (I'm sure you did!) I had to pause and google that cheese Amy was eating on her salad. I've never heard of it. Looks delicious! Another place to explore. Great tour!
It's actually not the childhood home of Nimitz (common misconception). He was born there but spent the majority of his childhood in Kerrville before graduating from Tivy high school. His mom and step dad/uncle ran the St. Charles hotel which stood where the Sid Peterson hospital used to be located in town.
What blows my mind as someone born and raised in South Africa is just how much the locations you’ve outlined in this video reminds me of where I grew up! Like a little piece of Africa in the US, Super, super cool! Will absolutely have to visit the area in the near future! Thanks for the great video guys! 😊👏🏻🙌🏻
Awesome video. I will be traveling soon between San Antonio and Waco. You've inspired me to take the scenic route through the hill country. That's worth a subscribe.
I've had this area on my list of places I have never been but want to visit and I think your video just put me over the edge on planning a trip. Probably wait for the fall or next spring at this point though. Great video!
I never saw the Pedernales Falls so low. We used to go there and walk out to the falls where the water would flow at about six inches deep all the time. At the bottom the rock turned up and it would launch you up and out into the pool. That was one of the main reasons to go there. Apparently, some people would do that who weren't good enough swimmers and there were drownings. There are whirlpools. There is also a split in the rocks downstream about 10 feet wide where tubing or rafting was fun. A little rough on a tube because the water was moving fast through there. Now they don't allow swimming there. The water looks very low!
The Pacific War Museum also has an outdoor section where they do a short battle reenactment. It is only on certain days and hours though. Worth the watch... (At least they had this on my last trip there)
Hamilton's Pool looks mostly the same but operates totally different from forty years ago when I would go. It's not nearly as fun now. I've been to almost every place you went in this video in the 70's and 80's. The best spot on the video was the Nimitz Museum. It took me all day to see and read and think about what's there. But when it comes to the Texas Hill Country for every place you visit there are ten more to see. You could live in that part of Texas and never see them all. Every town is unique, a jewel with no end to creativity in what is called, The Friendly State, the Texas motto we believe in. 😅
Dallas girl here, love your this awesome video. I love the hill country always great to see videos of the hill country……… one question though - where did Amy get her sunglasses? I love love love them.
From an Orange County resident, I too love Salt Like. When I visited Austin, I went out to Driftwood as well. Bought extra BBQ to bring home. I've asked people visiting the area to stop at the airport to bring me their bbq sauce and rub as well. Great choice!
I'm in Houston so I visit all these areas quite often during the year, enough to get bored lol Yet your video is making me want to visit it this weekend.
Great videos ! Watching from Melbourne Australia. You have a great speaking style - so much so I often let your videos run on play all while doing chores around the house. You Tubers who use AI voices I will never give my time to. Keep it up ! 👏🏼 Having never been to the US I’m enjoying the high quality imagery too. Especially Utah - fabulous
I went to that part of Texas the last month, and after watching your video I discover the name of the flowers along the I-35. Also I find out new places to see my next time there.
Great job y’all. Even though we have property near Llano, about 16 miles from Fredericksburg I did not know many of the restaurants. Plan to take my wife to see Blake the Rhino and sip some great Texas wines. Thanks!
Walden Retreats 100% looks and feels like where I’m from in Johannesburg, South Africa! Currently live in Florida but think we are going to try and come here for our honeymoon after recent marriage.
Was in Fredericksburg in December. I bet Pops would’ve enjoy the Naval Museum. I stayed about 2.5 hrs, I agree with you, probably could’ve stayed 4-5 hrs.
Good day! Just FYI, I know Desert Door claims to be the only ones making Sotol, but it’s not accurate anymore. Y’all should take a short drive to Giddings & visit Dime Box Distillery. They have SOTOL, whiskey, & vodka. All great stuff! They have also won awards for it.
Just wanted to take a minute to say what I love about your videos/style: They are always presented in a light-hearted, easy-going tone that exploration and adventure are all about. You don't overexplain or intellectualize travel, you simply enjoy the journey and present your experience, and I really like that
Really appreciate that comment. It is exactly what I am trying to do and I am glad it is coming through in the videos!
I agree... It has a very calming "Rick Steves" quality to it
As a lifelong Texan from San Antonio, it is great seeing the Hill Country get some love. Such an awesome collection of towns and things to do. Some local intel about the park. It is pronounced Purrr-den-ales in spite of that pronunciation making no sense! Enjoyed the video!

She said they are these from Amazon - amzn.to/3Z13V2T
Thank you Josh. It was a super nice trip.
Glad you liked it!
From an Orange County resident, I too love Salt Like. When I visited Austin, I went out to Driftwood as well. Bought extra BBQ to bring home. I've asked people visiting the area to stop at the airport to bring me their bbq sauce and rub as well. Great choice!
I recently went to a family's wedding in Dripping Springs and had a chance to visit Reimer's Ranch park. It was a beautiful place!
I'm in Houston so I visit all these areas quite often during the year, enough to get bored lol
Yet your video is making me want to visit it this weekend.
Great coverage of both known and unknown spots to visit!😊

Great videos ! Watching from Melbourne Australia. You have a great speaking style - so much so I often let your videos run on play all while doing chores around the house. You Tubers who use AI voices I will never give my time to. Keep it up ! 👏🏼 Having never been to the US I’m enjoying the high quality imagery too. Especially Utah - fabulous
Well I stand correted on this video. I really appreciate your work.
I went to that part of Texas the last month, and after watching your video I discover the name of the flowers along the I-35.
Also I find out new places to see my next time there.
Glad you enjoyed our state with your friends! Best of all is Wildseeds.
It was an amazing place to spend a few days for sure!
The sunset shots were great!
Great job y’all. Even though we have property near Llano, about 16 miles from Fredericksburg I did not know many of the restaurants. Plan to take my wife to see Blake the Rhino and sip some great Texas wines. Thanks!
So awesome that we could show you a few spots. Really loved our time there, such a beautiful area!
Walden Retreats 100% looks and feels like where I’m from in Johannesburg, South Africa! Currently live in Florida but think we are going to try and come here for our honeymoon after recent marriage.
Great Video. Thank you for posting.
11:12 “it’s not great” damn homie i wish i coulda seen what you seen cause dat was actually beautiful
Fredericksburg looks amazing 👍
I live on the big island but love to visit there in the spring to visit family.
Always a joy watching these amazing trips 👌😁
Great video, thank you. 18:15, flower blooms from mid May to late April?
Sorry! I meant March to late April
Like Hamilton pool and look forward to visiting it one day
Was in Fredericksburg in December. I bet Pops would’ve enjoy the Naval Museum. I stayed about 2.5 hrs, I agree with you, probably could’ve stayed 4-5 hrs.
Another great Vid, we always enjoy em
I was having dejavú feelings, and then I remembered…I’ve already seen this video 😅
I’m still watching tho, cause why not! 🙌🏽
You are the best, always appreciate your support :)
You should try Wolf Mountain trail at perdenalis State Park. It's long. But great
18:13 - Did you mean to say "mid March"?
Whoops, yes I did! March not May
