Here's a correction for you guys: The majority of the Congo's rubber actually came from vines called Landolphia owariensis. These cannot be tapped like trees, instead they had to be slashed with a machete. The workers would let the latex liquid drip onto their arms and coagulate. After it hardened, they had to peel the latex off which would tear out the hair with it, and was very painful.
The vines as a latex source were nowhere near as reliable as trees, because once you slashed the vines, that was it. The Congolese had to go deeper and deeper into the jungle to find more vines, and stood no chance of keeping up the quota.
OH S###!..that..would REALLY suck..

I actually learned about this in history class
This is basically how my AP European History class taught me about imperialism in Africa. The Congo was a lot worse than they described.

Then you should check more.
except its not, the alternative hypothesis channel has a recent video on this myth which was politically motivated, in the way new regimes in rome would smear the reputation of the previous leader if not simply erasing them all together. The numbers stated were simply not practically possible especially at that time, basically they fail the smell test, but have become ideologically convenient enough to not look at too closely now.

Nolan: if you want to improve your car's performance, the first thing you need is upgraded tires
Forza players: I'm going to pretend I didn't see that
horizonbabies sure. in motorsport you absolutely go for tires then suspension then drivetrain swaps then drivetrain upgrades then engine swap then engine upgrades

This was unexpected, but welcomed on a video about tires.
Why? the whole video was about the late 1800s? the only tires made were bicycle tires. this had nothing to do with the car tire industry
Beau Daniel it’s a HISTORY, not an explanation of the modern rubber market.
This was honestly one of the best episodes. The information may have been a little off (which you corrected) but it’s very important to spread this type of information. Hats off for doing something a little more serious and bringing some awareness to more than just cars.

I remember learning about it a little in AP World; but that class covered so much we didn't talk about it much, and I never took much European History.
I recommend looking at this picture and reading the story, it's enlightening about the cruelty of the Congo. It's the story of the picture of the man next to "6-12 million dead." (TW: If you have children or are a human being it's distressing)

@@honkhonk8009 some countries didnt even had slavery at the first place?

Just watched this now in Dec 2020. Donut media, you are really coming into your own. Keep up the good work, especially the history lessons.
My wife came by while I was watching "my dumb car videos" and this one literally stopped her in her tracks. The Force Publique also punished parents for not meeting their rubber quotas by chopping off their children's hands and feet too. The lower left image at 6:56 is of a father mourning over his seven year old's hand and foot. Look how small they are. This video's content was pretty gruesome, but thank you Donut for bringing this to light.
This is very interesting I wish to see more history lessons.
USSR: I am the best at getting away with genocide.
Imperial Japan: No, fool! I am the best!
????: Amateurs.
USSR: What did you say, PUNK?!
Belgium: AMATEURS.
What genocide did the USSR commit? Genocide would be killing based on race/culture. They had political purges, not genocide.
They also had kulaks in Ukraine that refused to give up their harvest to be shared with the people because they wanted to remain privatized in a socialist regime. Instead they would hide it/burn it/refuse to work for it. That and the high demand for wheat to be spread across a giant nation undergoing rapid industrialization led to mass famines that has been politically dubbed as a "genocide".
