In this DIY rug hack video, I showed how to easily use carpet flooring to create a large area rug. Our house came with standard carpet flooring. When we ripped the carpet out, I had the floor installer save a couple of large pieces so I can make them into area rugs using Instabind. It was easy to create, I bought the Instabind material on Amazon. Link below

Nice job! - however, Instabind is $62 - You can also use a small blow torch and seal the edges yourself. Much cheaper, looks fine if you cut a straight edge.
Yes, I suppose I could use a blow torch to seal the edges (if I didn't first start the carpet and/or myself on fire). The edges would be sealed but not have the finished look of a professionally bound edge. Compared to having a rug professionally bound, Instabind is a bargain.

Here's another option for joining two pieces. I saw that there is also another way to connect two ends using Instabind. On one end you cut only the cording about an inch from the end leaving the outer fabric, then slip the new piece into the old piece, making sure to join the cording and overlap the fabric. That way it won't separate over time and will look smooth.

Thanks for this! I have a dog who slips on the hardwood and I need a rug to cover the whole floor, but didn't want to buy an expensive 12 ft rug that she and the other dog will destroy. This with inexpensive by-the-yard carpet will be perfect!

hell yeah, new project I want to do now. I have been wanting to get a huge rug for my basement TV area, but huge rugs are sooooo expensive. Carpet is much cheaper, this is a great idea, thanks for the tip!

Wow, thanks for 1, for 2, it looks like you have a very nice house ($) but your not too "hoitey-toitey" to admit this is the best option for you and obviously makes the most sense when it comes to cleaning and up-cycling. Great way to make use of, recycle carpet. Someone could do this as a side gig as there is a steady reply of carpet being removed. Agreed with another comment to use the overlap method on the ends. Looks great.

Do you know if this will work on an indoor/outdoor piece of carpet? I have a "grassy type" of carpet from Lowes on my covered lanai that may get wet from rain sometimes.
It might not if it's exposed to direct sun. Also because the back is an adhesive, not sure how it hold up when wet. Maybe sewing it in will have it hold up to the weather better.

This is a great video but this material is so expensive it's only practical for a very small rug.

Why the hell would you pull everything of your gas stove when you could use a map gas torch. I mean, even a butane torch lighter would work.
I have hard wood floors but always keep a large rug down for my dog!
My old boy scruff slipped on my wood floor and had life threatening spinal injuries he was to far gone to save never again!

We have spare carpet that we use in the garage because I hate walking on cold ground so it works. Never thought to bind it.
