Desperate Tories Target Foreign Workers

  • The British government seems determined to do everything possible to stop foreigners from coming to the U.K. Presumably this is in an attempt to pander to the #dailyexpress and #dailymail readers who backed #brexit and who favour tougher restrictions on foreigners coming to the UK
The latest immigration regulations make it all but impossible for any unskilled worker to come to work in the UK. For skilled workers there are considerable hurdles to overcome.
In response to higher than expected and record immigration from non-EU countries following Brexit the government has now announced that in future those wishing to work in the UK will not be allowed to bring their dependants. This will almost certainly result in a significant reduction in those coming and will further add to the UK's woes.
There are no longer any legal routes for #asylumseekers to come to the UK or to apply for asylum. There are tens of thousands waiting for their applications to be processed. They are being paid around £6 per day for subsistence whilst just one of the firms providing accommodation made a profit of £62 million last year.
Preventing workers from coming to the UK and failing to process asylum applications from those who have arrived from across the Channel, having no other route to the UK, is stupid and inefficient and will only damage the UK economy more.

It would be, mass immigration has driven down labour costs in the UK, and the subsequent loss of younger workforce and population has driven up wages and availability of affordable housing in the country of origin. I think the main reason for leaving was that the EU were going to stop people like Sunak from stashing their money away tax free in the Cayman Islands and the like. Otherwise why would people like Mogg work and join the commons for a measly MP salary? Maybe I am being cynical.

Not cynical, factual. Funny how Mogg’s financial company moved to Ireland to remain in the EU with all its benefits of ease of trade as soon as Brexit happened. Thank Michael, Another short but erudite summary of our ridiculous view of foreign workers, particularly from the Eastern countries in Europe. It is many years since I retitled at 66 years old but during the latter years of my Woking life, I inspected the working sites employing many Europeans. Initially most had language difficulties but in a very short time they were among the most hard working and conscientious people in the industry. Thanks to Brexit and our very stupid politicians we have lost many of our valuable assets.

The rich people that hang around the Tory Party resent paying taxes to fund services for the great unwashed. Of course, they don't - they use all the tax loopholes going to avoid it - but that doesn't stop them thinking that people just need to work harder and stop being so lazy. I mean for heaven's sake, if you are struggling with your finances why don't you just sell off one of your second homes?
One way to reduce Government spending would be to reduce the pension bill. IDS and others have already called for the state pension age to be raised to 75. What better justification could there be for such a move if they can convince the country that we don't need foreign workers, we just need to work harder ourselves. They'll dress it up as liberating people from the shackles of the state. People should be careful what they wish for.

    1. Fourteen years, and the Tories have nothing left to offer the people, but fear, division and culture war.
    2. Brexit was always about three things: immigration, immigration and immigration. The voters were persuaded that a vote for Brexit would result in fewer brown faces on our streets.
    3. Legal migration, NAO figures show, make a net contribution to our economy, with a dwindling indigenous population, who do we think are going to pay for our pensions, going forward?

I makes it more difficult for foreigners to come to the UK for a holiday. A few years ago, my secretary in Siemens Bangkok wanted a tourist visa so she could go and see her sister in England. I took her to the British Embassy and I was asked if I was the her sponsor, which I was not. I was very coldly told to wait outside whilst my secretary was given the third degree; was she the owner of her house, what was her bank balance etc.
She was given a 2 page letter explaining why she couldn't get a tourist visa. One of the reasons given was that she wanted to move permanently to the UK and there was a hint of what she wanted to do for work when she got there as she was quite attractive.
She was getting a good salary in Bangkok working for a major German company. She had been my secretary for 10 years and had no intention of going to the UK to claim asylum. This was a typical story of the British embassy and it was the decision of a youngish women who was only a No 3 in Bangkok.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the word "foreigner" never appears as a legal term in any legislation, convention or treaty. The closest one gets to this term is the now archaic phrase "foreign national" in some domestic legislation - denoting a person with an established nationality and citizenship within a jurisdiction other than the one in which that law applies.
However this term can only be used very selectively - its failure to describe or address the many legal nuances involved in "nationality" (are they "naturalized" citizens, is their citizenship revoked, compromised or annulled by circumstances beyond their control etc?) renders even this term rather redundant in any legislation attempting to address immigration control and completely useless in any legislation drafted in compliance with a country's obligations under the 1951 Convention on Refugees as well as those other related conventions and treaties extending rights to individuals when crossing any internationally recognized border.
When the word "foreigner" is used colloquially in general public discourse within any country therefore it is never a good sign - it not only reveals a public generally ignorant of international law but one that is more likely than not to be fundamentally xenophobic in outlook. When that same public discourse repeatedly fails to acknowledge the very real distinction between "migrant", "refugee" and "asylum seeker", let alone the three very distinct sets of legal responsibilities attached to each of these internationally established legal categories, it simply confirms that both the ignorance and the xenophobia within that society is reflected in that country's political establishment too. It is a society whose own government has not only failed to educate its public but has actively promoted both of these heinous traits for its own purposes.
The UN issued a very clear warning to the UK within the last year that it is now falling very much within the collection of countries which both the UNHCR and the IOM recognize as failing to fulfill their commitments with regard to migration. This was hardly reported within the UK. That which was not reported at all was that this assessment placed the UK within "Category B" - those countries which are intentionally failing in this respect and actively drafting domestic legislation guaranteed to make them fail even more in the future. A feature of "Category B" countries is the measurable ignorance of their populations as evidenced by public discourse - taken to be a sign that their governments are ideologically driven to persuade their populations to disregard international law completely.
The much used term "British exceptionalism" is not therefore some mere epithet arbitrarily and subjectively applied to a people taught to take pride in their contrariness. It is very much a description of a society on a fast-track to pariah status in terms of international law, standing and perception abroad. And every time you hear a Briton employ the word "foreigner" when attempting to address issues such as migration it is simply yet another nail in the coffin of whatever international status it once enjoyed.
And probably the worst part of all this? The same ignorance means that most within that society fail even to recognize the path they have taken, let alone how far down that path they have already ventured. Spoiler alert - the destination of that path is not a place you really want to end up at.

If anything good is to come out of the brexit catastrophe I hope it is that the EU becomes much stronger after watching the willful and destructive effect on the uk. The uk will never recover from it's self inflicted damage and the only thing I hope for is that I can recover my freedom to leave to a more civilised country. I'm really past careing anymore about the fate of the uk as sane people don't stand a chance of changing things here.

    • @SonOfViking
      @SonOfViking 4 місяці тому +3

The EU has indeed strengthened in two key areas, both of which are a result of Brexit along with problems with both Poland and Hungary in recent years, and both of which will effectively block any bid by the UK to be re-admitted as a member.
The first is a change in the EU's own constitution, now approved by the Council so already now in effect, that allows the Commission to suspend any or all EU funding to a member which unilaterally disapplies any portion of the Acquis Communitaire domestically. Subject to Council and Parliamentary approval this level of sanction will be raised to outright expulsion within the next EU governmental cycle (2025-2030). Given that this is what the UK did repeatedly throughout its membership, and given that it cannot provide a constitutional guarantee that it would never do this again, this measure would debar the UK as a candidate just on its own.
However even more importantly the EU now insists that applicant members must not only produce a democratic constitution for inspection but also must show which articles within that constitution act as a brake against the same constitution being dismantled by the executive arm of government. Given that what passes for a constitution in the UK is largely unwritten and composed mostly anyway of accumulated decisions by the executive arm of government this means that the UK cannot even prove it is a democracy at this stage according to how this is defined within the EU (and the rest of the civilized world), let alone that it can ever be a bona fide applicant for membership.
Good luck with your ambition to move to a civilized country.

@@PurityVendetta Just bear in mind that your Irish-born grandmother must have been alive when you were born. Also her child, your parent, should have acquired citizenship or proof of Irish citizenship in the past too. If your granny died before you were born and your parent (mother?) has never had an Irish passport then all bets are off. It is almost impossible for you to qualify as you cannot get onto the Foreign Births Register.
But there is one possible workaround. If your parent (mother?) never availed of Irish citizenship then they should do this before you - it will be a much easier process for them and then you can use their citizenship, not your grandmother's, as the basis for you registering on the "Foreign Birth Register" in Ireland. Once you get your name on that then you'll get a "Birth Certificate" and a passport within days. Good luck!

Huge profits for those providing accommodation is hardly surprising. We have a government perfectly happy to overpay for anything when it comes to the public’s money. Overpaying mainly for substandard services too. Hotels serving very poor quality food for example. How many directors of those hotel groups and the like are Tory donors I wonder? "Hating foreigners" is nothing new on the island of Britain. Imagine the consternation felt by "indigenous Britons" when the Romans invaded and colonized England, then suddely left in 4AD after almost 400 years. Imagine the consternation of what was left of the "Britons" when the Angles, Saxons and Jutes' tribes invaded from Germany and the Lowland regions of Europe to colonize England in 5AD. Not to mention the consternation of the Germanic tribes to the arrival of the Norse to colonize large parts of England in 793. And the utter consternation of the Germanic and Viking dynasties when the Franco Normans invaded, colonized Britain and subjugated "the natives" post Hastings 1066. Thus began the great melting pot of Briton, Pict, Roman, Saxon, Viking and Franco Norman. A fusion of the disparate cultures of Europe to create today's class-obsessed "hybrid English". The "hating" on "foreigners" could be a misdirected emotion formed from a deeper self hate. Maybe the medieval-era melting pot that produced today's "hybrid English" identify isn't as cohesive as some might like.
