Starmer & Labour Face An Impossible Challenge In Trying To Clear Up The Mess Left By The Tories

  • Last week saw the general election in which Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives were beaten by the #labourparty under #keirstarmer
Under the First Past The Post Labour won 411 seats with just 34% of votes cast and with a turnout of just 60%
The government now faces an almost impossible set of challenges. Starmer says he will re-negotiate our deal with the EU, will do away with 'red tape' hindering trade with the EU and that he will finance the many areas that are starved of cash by growing the economy. He has also stated recently that the UK will never return to EU membership in his lifetime.

Brexit has obviously been a disaster and I personally agree that I’d like us to go back into the EU as quickly as possible. Let’s be real though, Britain is racist. It was never particularly committed to the European project, it has a little tinpot mentality and it doffs its cap to posh privately educated figures like Farage, Johnson and the like. People in this country want it to be miserable and they want to live in the past. I think that mentality may die off as very different younger generations replace the oldies, but meanwhile people want to go back to the 1950s. Maybe that will change under Labour quicker than Starmer thinks, his comments certainly indicate a longer timeframes than I’d imagined, but here we are. Let’s just stabilise for now, get the public sector on its feet again, get building, fix our international reputation and get our house in order. Elections and referendums have consequences, that’s democracy, and decline has been what people have voted for in every election apart from the one 3 days ago. We have to live with the consequences of the past 14 years.

Agreed but...BY the same token, it is important that Starmer remembers he has not got more voices than Corbyn had garnered, and the other parties too can learn how to use the system: the libdems have been brilliant. As somebody remarked: when a constituency turns Libdem, it remains libdem BECAUSE the libdems are not in government. This changed after the coaltion, hence their losses, but they have learnt their lesson: better to be an effective opposition which can push the government into doing good stuff (unlike Fartage who pushed the government into doing bad stuff). Same with the Greens and some independent. I can feel some of the progressive little ones uniting as we speak.

It makes the crucial point that the EU will not consider a UK rejoin so long as the official opposition maintains that if it returns to power it will reverse all moves to closer alignment made by a Labour govt. Your commentary is quite accurate; I am sure that Labour realise that their majority is fairly fragile. Not in terms of parliamentary arithmetic of course, but in terms of a future election, a hostile media and a bleak economic outlook.
Clearly there are questions about the consequences of Brexit, which Starmer will not be able to duck in the way Sunak and co have done. You have an opportunity to underline these questions (as you have been doing) and to add to the pressure. Key potential actors are the Lib Dems and the Greens, who I cannot see have anything to lose by pressing Labour on the consequences of Brexit: they do not have to say much about rejoin or even returning into the Single Market. The first task is to acknowledge the accumulating damage.

@martinbennett2228 "Your commentary is quite accurate; " NO it was NOT - basically he makes unfounded assumptions with no fact- based commenary (like Starmer always u turns"
"I am sure that Labour realise that their majority is fairly fragile." It is MAJORITY - that means they will hopefully attempt to seek cross party ruling (because that is Starmer's character) but they will have the power to ram their decisions thorough .
"Not in terms of parliamentary arithmetic of course, but in terms of a future election, a hostile media and a bleak economic outlook." Hostile media granted but that was ALWAYS the case - now Labour can ignore the media for quite a while AND ANY betterment will be seen VERY quickly - the next election will be full of the improvements (once at the bottom, up is the only way).
"Clearly there are questions about the consequences of Brexit, which Starmer will not be able to duck" And why should there be any "ducking" Starmer never wavered in his rejection of Brexit - the subject may be dragged up but the response is simple ' what is, IS, how Labour deals with it is not the right question"
" Key potential actors are the Lib Dems and the Greens, who I cannot see have anything to lose by pressing Labour on the consequences of Brexit" to what end? there is no going back - just making the comment "wow what a lousy deal we got" is about all that can be said!
" they do not have to say much about rejoin or even returning into the Single Market. (" neither a possibility!) The first task is to acknowledge the accumulating damage." WHY? The trouble with PR is that you will almost always end up with a coalition government, which means the election manifestos are worthless, because the final policy positions will always be negotiated in secret after the election behind closed doors. Give me Single Transferable Vote, please, rather than FPTP or PR, so that he link between an MP and their constituency is maintained, voters can support smaller parties as their first choice if they wish, and the MP will reflect the overall leaning of their constituency. So they are powerless to deliver rejoining. What they can do though, is everything possible to reduce the disadvantages of being outside the EU.

There are 2 burning issues facing our nation, namely:
    1) Can economic growth be achieved, and if so by what means?
    2) Can the rapid rise in inequality - along with the steep rises in the cost of living - be reversed?
*1) ECONOMIC GROWTH.* In order to achieve economic growth, the dominant factor - as Michael rightly points out - is that the UK is able once more to join the EU. It's hard to see how else the UK Government could POSSIBLY grow our economy UNLESS and UNTIL this is achieved. IMO this will not be possible for some considerable time, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is Starmer's emphatic statement that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES will he ever consider this as a possibility.
*2) COMBATTING INEQUALITY.* Whilst this is not easy, it is VERY possible IF the government have the political will so to do. But this will require the government to impose PROPER taxation on giant and multinational companies - instead of the PITTANCE which they currently charge these companies. Sadly, however, Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer have ALSO ruled this out COMPELTELY and UTTERLY.
The money raised from levying proper taxes on these companies would enable the government to rebuild our broken nation. If the govenment rely solely on increasing income tax, and on borrowing, then nothing will be solved, although some problems might be deferred/delayed until a later date.
If, as seems likely, this government merely tinker around the edges, then sooner or late the electorate will turn to some far-right charismatic populist leader - such as Nigel Farage - in the hope the he will make life better for them.
Also, unless Starmer decides to implement Electoral Reform - changing from FPTP to PR with STV - then sooner or later Labour will lose, and lose badly - just as Michael is saying.
The likely scenarios I foresee could be either that:
    a) Farage becomes leader of the Tory Party, or that
    b) Someone else from the far right of the Tory Party becomes leader - Priti Patel, Robert Jenrick, or someone else, or even
    c) Reform UK grow massively in popularity - probably under Farage.
At that point, we could look forward to all our democratic safeguards being removed, and the UK becoming a quasi-fascist one-party authoritiarian state.
Every extreme regime which has replaced a democracy has done so either through a military coup, or through the ballot box, after a period of economic downturn and increased poverty and inequality, regardless of the country in question. EXAMPLES:
    * *Russia.* Putin was democratically elected, but has turned Russia into a de facto authoritarian dictatorship.
    * *Hungary.* Orban was democratically elected, but has removed as many democratic safeguards as possible, and now wields total power in Hungary.
    * *India.* Again, Modi was elected, but has manoeuvred himself into a position of having almost total power.

    Hi Michael.
I see Starmer as a very intelligent man, so why does he deny EU membership?
    1. What is best: Saying we won't join or come back from Brussels and saying: "They won't have us, our old membership card is shredded."?
    2. The Tories are the key to EU membership, like it or not. So he waits until the Tories gets the idea to rejoin, it will solve a lot of problems. EU will NOT let the UK in without Tory support. When the Tories give the thumbs up, the train can start. Right now, it is just a little shunting at the station.
    3. EU is very much busy with other things and the queue in front of the UK is very long:
Candidate countries for EU membership: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, (Turkey), and Ukraine.
I do not believe the UK will be allowed to jump the queue. The other countries will be very angry.
    4. He will try to align more and more, get things fixed, such as corruption, House of Lords, and so on. So if an opportunity somehow comes up, the UK will be ready.
Starmer knows all this, because he has been to meetings in Brussels.
I am 63 years young, and I know I will never see the UK in the EU.

Yes the public should be demanding that money for the Rwanda scheme should be claimed back from the Rwanda government. Also when the Asylum seekers have been granted Asylum here, they to should be paying towards the hotel costs which have provided lodgings curtesy of the Tax Payer.

    Good afternoon michael
I think that the figures of voting people was lower than normal because of tactical voting as many had in mind getting rid of the tories.
Anyway labour won so that s the main thing .
Thank you for your clip today michael xx😊

Turn out was probably low because of all the "Labour will win anyway" talk.

Yes, Michael; even though I wanted Labour to win, I still think the fact that they got such a huge majority with just 34% of the vote is wrong. The first past the post system is completely unfair and hopefully some kind of PR will be brought in at some stage. But on a more positive note, at least we have grown ups in charge of the country again. For that alone, we should be very grateful.

Don’t forget those disenfranchised voters (like me 😖) who could not physically get to a polling station and had to rely on a postal vote … how many postal votes arrived too late to get the votes returned on time OR who didn’t receive their postal vote at all?????Lest we forget 😖.

02:12 "My view has been all along that outside of the EU we will never recover." And the EU is famously a place where third countries that have systematically wrecked their national economy and trade relations will go to recover...
The EU isn't the old EEC. The UK will _have_ to recover outside the EU, because a healthy national economy is now part of the accession criteria.

To be fair Michael, there are many prerequisites for the UK to start a join the EU process. (1) the EU will never consider an application that is not supported by the party in Government AND by the main opposition party (Tory?), (2) there are many criterii to be met (Copenhagen criterii). Yes some EU countries do not meet all of them BUT it will CERTAINLY be mandatory for a new country, (3) there is an obligation to roll back many destructions caused by Tories (OZ and NZ treaties, de-regulations, change of standards, etc). (4) No hope to get back all the (exhorbitant) advantages the UK had. NO WAY. (5) the EU is the result of decade-long negociations between EU countries (YES including the UK) so forget about cherry-picking as 450 milion EU citizern have NO TASTE to change the EU for much smaller UK.
So Starmer is facing a dilemma: start possibily eroding the voters capital by announcing upfront his intent to join the EU because it will not be an easy walk in a flower field and on the other hand, to rely on an hypothetic second term (usually with reduced majority) to start the hard work on a decade-long enterprise is very hasardous.
So, I think the time is now if the UK wants to join the EU (But will it today in large numbers?) and PLEASE Britons, stop thinking that the SM or CU are available without joining.
    Greetings from France.

@@crb9899 Yes indeed but (1) it is very unlike the UK to accept all without a say and (2) Norway is part of the EEA which has stated they would reject an applicqtion from the UK. So, close to impossible.

    Of note from the election:
A lot of postal votes went missing, including mine and my wife’s. For the 2019 election, 8.9 million postal ballots were issued.
The combined popular vote for the tories and Regress UK Ltd, was greater than that for Labour.
