This title is a bit misleading. It barely shows how to install duct work and more of the basics of connection to a main trunk line. I’d be happy to chat with This Old House and come up with something!
I may have learned more about system design than putting duct together, and that's also a good thing! Cool way to accommodate the client's aesthetic demands.
So you want to go from top to bottom less ventilation lines very good idea. Put it in your attic and vent downward. I have 3 bedroom upstairs in Michigan farm house. Just looking on how to build on on an 1800s house
This system is called High velocity up here in the north, the trick on this system is to run the main trunk line as a loop, this will ensure every outlet will have the same air velocity. I always try to keep the main trunk line near the outlets to make a loop before connecting from the take off to the outlet this will quiet the sound. As for the Return this system requires a bigger Return size than a conventional.
As stated, where is the finished product? I am a seasoned professional, 27 years and anything I see from another professional needs to be shown to the finish, take a reading, I am old school, SHOW ME. can
People, This is just a teaser. You have to watch the full episodes. There's a link in the description. Sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes to learn something.
I like how you cover the hand rail 😍 my boos always cry when I try cover thing like that but some home owners like to keep things clean I hate my cheap boos 😁😁
Should have installed mini-splits...WAY more efficient, way cheaper, no duct work at all, and all that space taken up by AC trunk lines is now available to make another room...the system they are showing was sold to the homeowner so the HVAC company could make huge $$$$$...had the homeowner used mini-splits they would have saved at least 50% on the installation.
This old house is not the same anymore. Richard, roger, and Tommy are all retired. The knowledgeable are leaving us and TOH is working on getting new cast that would replace them. But they’ll never have the unique knowledge like them.
I love Richard but half the video was him showing the different finishes on these simple ports. I could make one on a lathe in five minutes out of diamond for six cents. Not really but you get my point.
Its called High Velocity HVAC and I may go with this over Mini-split because some installers warn that Mini-splits (multiple units) can leak condensate lines. I have seen this once in a building and if the run, along with insects or lines aren't cleared annually (who does that?) then it could happen. Anyone here have Mitsubishi mini splits and have any leaks from condensate?
The condensate lines from a minisplit should ideally be 3/4 inch PVC, not that crap flexible tube, and gravity fed. If you are forced to use a condensate pump, that increases the chances of an overflow/leak. If it's PVC, it's easy enough to keep clean. Just hook a shop vac onto the discharge end outside every few months in the Summer to suck out the gunk. Easy DIY homeowner task.
bnasty267 IIRC i have seen a photo one time of the contamination inside such pipe. It’s some kind of slime caused by bacteria. I don’t think a shopvac will change anything about that slime layer. You need chemicals and/or scrubbing. But i agree that a smooth pipe with a bit more diameter will help.
When mounting the indoor unit mini split it is very important to make the hole going out with a nice pitch, this will ensure a more efficient drainage, as a homeowner your task will be to clean, wash and air dry the filter. And yes, every once in a while it should be maintain by a hvac technician.
I agree on the mini splits. Then you even have a thermostat in every room. And i think it’s much more efficient to take the heat right below the ceiling of the room, cool that, and put it right back into the room (what a minisplit does), instead of only adding more and more cool air to the room.
@@Engineer9736 you do lose the ability to filter the air in any meaningful way with these ductless systems or have other HVAC options (humidification or dehumidification).
Matt Minisplits only dehumidify (and cool/heat of course). But i guess such central system does the same. I think they don’t have a humidifying option (Unless you really go search for something that does that). Regarding dust filtering, yes the central system may be more effective for that as the filter sits tightly in the filterbox. In minisplits there is some dust filter element but air can still go around it. But dust filtering is not the task of an airco.
I know why less and less people watch this show now. All most of the guys on the staff do is push the products they love. Never show end result or really even the full process of install.
Its a very good system. A high air flow system. The unico pulls 30% more humidity out of the air than conventional systems. One or two returns is really all a house will need.
solution could have been spilit units.. call it a day... please we have to change our customs as Americans, we cant be stuck with 60's 70's mentality working with a 4 ton unit to cool a room.. We need this energy efficiency and promote spilits for energy consumption stand point as well..

Agreed. Really needed to show what they will actually look like installed on those bare walls and ceilings...

How come on 90% of your videos you don't show the final product? It would have been nice to see this finished and working.
It’s all process never outcome. Most of us just come here for the fundamental aspect of doing the job.
its made by Space pack and its a bad video
Can’t turn the machine on if the electrician hasn’t dropped by, I didn’t see a single outlet around…

How about showing end result?
Not in the production budget.
Because it looked unsightly by the end...should have used mini-splits

Will this also work in a multifamily?
This is not a "how to" video.
It really should instead be labeled "explained".

One used to learn something from this old house.......hasn’t been like that in a looong time........
This title was a misleading. I am happy to see them doing videos with homes in SC though.
I just started watching this Channel last night on Pluto Tv. Great info!
I feel like I've literally seen Richard explain this exact same thing a dozen times. I won't lie, TOH, I'm cheating on you with Essential Craftsman.
EC is great, really enjoy his series. Finished carpentry tv is great as well.
I wish you would come and install one of these in this older home I am taking on in Des Moines !
Rich is the man....plumbing to HVAC....
Look at my man Richard, he’s working hard.
I wish you could have a pro in every town like you guys.
Incredible thanks 🙏
Richard sweating profusely per usual.

Very helpful. Thank you for sharing.
Could have gotten the same info from a Lowes weekend class.
Building in the south...don’t build them to be efficient, just add 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 A/C units..
LOL
Who is naming these videos.

except who wants that hanging on their wall. slightly less ugly than a window unit, but still ugly.

So where will you run it even at 2"?
High volecity systems....is your answer..
can i air seal with foam over the insulation that wraps the ducts (ducts are in the attic)?
Nice love it😍😘
MORE!
why does this guy look like he pissed his pants ? MY GOD MAN ! New Nickname Mr Sweaty Balls !
3:39 what is that piece actually called? cant find the name online
I love Richard but half the video was him showing the different finishes on these simple ports. I could make one on a lathe in five minutes out of diamond for six cents. Not really but you get my point.
Is that a two inch duct. I thought we need at least 6 to 8 inches ?
That unit is a piece🤣
What are those vents called or this setup?
Why would you want those nasty beams exposed?
There probably going to dress them up and do a NY style loft.
If they’re going with exposed brick and exposed beams, I would just embrace it and go with exposed duct work!
I need help,I have an old house and all of the air condition it can be done.

Don't want to live in the house in the summer 2" ductwork come please
This guy doesn't like you let people talk, just himself
Tell me why hvac drains need p traps
For the condensation to drain out
So that air isn't pulled into the airstream out of the condensate pipe, the water in the p trap stops this
So the best you'll get on a 104°f day is 102° inside with this system?
Got to do my ducts in my old home. NOT looking forward to it. LOL
Look up unico system. Its pricey but worth the comfort.
Unico System costs too much money! Install wall mounted ductless mini split or a ceiling cassette mini split and call it a day!
Wall mounted ductless are ugly.
I agree on the mini splits. Then you even have a thermostat in every room. And i think it’s much more efficient to take the heat right below the ceiling of the room, cool that, and put it right back into the room (what a minisplit does), instead of only adding more and more cool air to the room.
And gas lines for mini duct can be ran much neater to the lower floors without having that 2 inch + insulation diameter hose running next to walls.

pretty pointless when you don't have return airs in each room
I guess they rely on the windows not being airtight. But it’s not optimal indeed.

Nice this explains EXACTLY how to install hvac ductwork! Thanks this old house for nothing. Next on this old house "how to breathe air"
There really is no straight forward video explaining ductwork. It's all misleading. They need to make a better video
This is a non-video.
First of all as a sheet metal mechanic. Anyone that is using flex as their main ducting should NOT be making how to videos. Flex is garbage period.
