- PYZEL Pyzalien 2 Review - WOOLY TV #12
(87kg/187cm - 192lb/6'1 1/2")
Wooly Macpherson puts the PYZEL 'Pyzalien 2' to the absolute test with over 8 different sessions up and down the coast in WA.
From 1-2ft weak beachys to 4-8ft roll in bombies, Wooly makes sure he knows the ins & outs of this board before talking about it.
FUN FACT: Wooly actually entered a local boardriders comp over the wknd and placed 1st in both OPEN MENS and OVER 45's while riding this Pyzalien 2.
I am riding a 6'1 x 19 3/4" x 2 5/8" - 33.1l (I'm 87kg and 6'1)

Reviews are very helpful thanks man!
Thanks mate
Awesome reviews - respect! Keep the honesty coming our way & looking forward to the Monsta 2020 review.
Thanks mate, whole point of these board reviews is to give my most honest review on them and glad you enjoyed.
The JS Monsta 2020 & Monsta Box 2020 will be very soon ✌🏼
@@WoolyTV great!!! really interested seeing the MB2020 review & your thoughts how it compares to the original MB & the pyzalien 2. thanks wooly!!!
Love the reviews. Y’all are really lighthearted and it’s great. One thing I wish you could do is show you paddling into the wave instead of just cutting the the part where you get up and rip! And you really do rip man haha Cheers from the States!
Cheers mate. Let me see if I can sneak some paddling in there somewhere.
great reviews! yeeeeeeeew 🤙 looking forward to the monstabox 2020 easy rider dims review
Yeah mate, mine should be here tomorrow or the next day. I have the new Monsta Box and Monsta 2020 Easy Rider to review.
Love the surfing and love how those wipeouts were also in the mix thought it was pretty cool
Thanks mate
@@WoolyTV thank you
Cheers for the review mate! Definitely helps when deciding what board to get. Ordered one to add to the quiver yew 🤙
Thanks. You wont be disappointed, this one goes really well
Yeah been trying to decide between pyzalien and phantom and this sold me. Especially since we’re similar body size. I’m 215 5’11 so I think I’ll go up to the 6’2. Thanks buddy
@@michaelmote2362 I think the Pyzalien will be more versatile than the Phantom. If I was your weight I would personally ride 35.5 - 36L at a very minimum. If you surf better than me you could go down a little and if not as good then go up a touch. Hope that helps. Enjoy the Pyzalien, its a great board.
Good review👍🏽🌊
Thanks mate, glad you liked it!
Randomly I threw in a Pancho Control trailer fin in one of my Pyzels with pinched rails (exterior EA blackstix, I’m 87kg as well) that would catch a bit and it solved the full speed turn rollover. Just needed a bit more surface area but I can still feel a bit of the drive from the Blackstix.
Always good to play with fins and work out whats best for each board!
sick vid! Thanks for your feedback!
You're welcome!
But you should check out the Red Tiger one I did! Much better
Great review and surfing! Do you plan to review the Pyzel Astro pop soon? 🙏🏾🏄🏾♂️
Thanks mate. Yes Im going to order an Astro Pop soon, stay tuned.
Fark yeh wooly luvin ya work waiting on ya monsta 2020 reveiw
Just about finished the current 3 boards and stick the tail pads on the Monsta Box 2020 and Monsta 2020 Easy Rider DIMs. Stay tuned
Ripping mate 👌 looks like a sick board 🤙
It is!
Thanks for the review Wooly! Do you reckon this would be a good option to add to my quiver of FireWire Seaside and Pyzel Phantom? Was looking for something that could handle hollow beachies with some size a little better and reckon this might be the go. Cheers, Rick (PS for me the Seaside is great as a groveller and for fuller waves and the Phantom loves to carve on point breaks)
Hi mate. Yes that sounds like a good plan. The Pyzalien 2 will sit nicely between those two boards. I found it best in waves chest high to slightly overhead and it loved a punchy section!
Hey awesome review man! I think I’m deciding on this board. It’ll be my first shortboard. I’m riding right now a 7’6 fun board and can ride it quite well but I wanna step it down for a shortboard for when we get the decent swells in NE. What length would you recommend for a guy that’s 6’1 225lbs. I was thinking of the 6’6 but not sure if after riding it and getting used to it I’d regret not getting a bit shorter/lower volume.
Thanks!
Hi Mate, Sorry for the delayed reply! The biggest mistake you will make is dropping down too soon. Its more about the volume than the length. What volume is your 7'6"?
Awesome review. You need to try JR'S and their tri flex tech 🤙
I'll check it out
Best board I've ever ridden
Yeah its a good one!
Thanks for the great review! Do you have any advice on the tail pad placement? I've tried to get the pad right back so that the kick pad starts at the back of the centre fin if that makes sense, but the leash plug is quite far forward on this board. I noticed your grip was a little further forward.. can you offer any advice on best placement? Thank you
Hi mate
I find if I put the tail pad right back then I never use the kick!
In the perfect world, your back foot should be right in the middle of the fins (on a thruster). So in theory, you could have the kick over the back fin - but that’s looks funny so most people have it somewhere in the middle of those two points. Hope that helps.
Wooly
Hey Wooly! Just haven’t seen a review from you on it, but you seem to be pretty familiar with the JS line up. JS raging bull easy rider vs Pyzalien 2 XL as a 1-board quiver for 8 months in Central America (el Salvador, Nicaragua, costa rica)? Keen to beat the crowds and get into the waves early but still be able to surf once i'm on
What size waves we talking? Head high and bigger?
@@WoolyTV Yeah pretty much. Being a bigger guy i generally dont bother paddling out unless its at least chest high (i'm 6'5 100kg). Head high is ideal and i enjoy overhead if its a slower wave at a point.
It's also probably worth noting the board sizes i can get my hands on:
- Pyzalien 2 XL = 6'4 x 21 x 2.875 (41L)
- Raging Bull (easy rider) = 6'4 x 20.875 x 3 (42.4L) or 6'6 x 21.5 x 3.06 (45.7L)
Intermediate surfer, after something easy to surf that gets me in earlier than everyone but can still progress on.
Yeeeewww!
I love mine! Riding Roberts Large fins on it most of the time here in Cali, AM2s when better. Board is really fast, more drive than most boards I've ever ridden.
Also works amazing as a quad with Roberts and HS quad rears.
Wooly how much do you weigh? I sized mine right at shortboard dims.
Actually feels like a forgiving and super fun and good high performance shortboard/driver. It does it all.
Good to know. I havent surfed it as a quad yet!
Wooly TV After riding the Pyzalian 2, Do you reach for this or your trusty Monsta Box (around the head high range)?
Hey Wooly love my P2 but has its limits when it starts to pump so I think a Shadow might be the next step up from the P2. The P2 is very user friendly. What’s your thoughts on jumping from a P2 to Shadow? Is the Shadow pretty easy to surf? The transition from one to the other is not a huge difference? Thanks mate yeeeeew
Hi mate, yes I found the Shadow and easy board to surf and would be a great jump up from the P2.
hi dude, first of all congratulations on your videos and honest reviews, you are very helpful indeed, I am a happy owner of a pyzalien2 and I find it to be exactly as described. I wanted to ask you for advice on choosing a board to pair with the pyzalien2 for smaller and weaker waves, of any brand or model, just a tip for a small wave board that you are comfortable with. I thank you
Hi mate.
Glad you like the P2. If you like that one maybe give the Astro Pop a go? I haven’t ridden one yet but they look good. CI Rocket Wide went very well for me in small surf. The new JS Sub Xero looks good too.
Hi did you prefer this board or the Hyfi monsta (older one ) Cheers for the review
Hi mate, so far the Monsta Box and Pyzalien 2 have been my favourite 'everyday' boards. Both go really well in a wide range of conditions.
Cheers
Great review! Whenever you get a chance, could you please review Pyzel's "Astro Pop" model, really interested in your thoughts on that blade. Thanks mate!
Thanks! I have an Astro Pop on order but there is a massive backlog of boards at the moment with the COVID craziness. Stay tuned
@@WoolyTV I completely understand! Thanks, looking forward to the review whenever it drops! Yew!
@@WoolyTV Did you finally got that Astro Pop? How do you rate it?
@@joaquinhenriquez5388 yes got one right in the middle of my knee recovery so I haven’t ridden it yet
@@WoolyTV Get well
Which would you choose for a board to sit about my CI Rocketwide, either the Monsta 2020 Easy Rider or the Pyzalien 2? Surfing South Coast NSW.
Hi mate.,
Im not too familiar with the Rocketwide but it looks to be quite a groveller. So both the MB and the Pyzalien 2 would be above that in wave range. The Pyzel will surf up probably up a touch more than the JS and the JS will be better than the Pyzel in the smaller stuff. Hope that helps. If you local surf shops cant help you, then feel free to hit up shop@starsurf.com.au as we might have what you are after.
Wooly
Awesome review!
My experience has been a little different with it.
I ride it as a quad and it is my main small wave board. Incredibly fast in small waves as a quad.
Mine is a little on the high side volume wise though for me, which might be part of why I like it so well in weak surf.
If there’s more swell or more power I would rather ride a standard hpsb.
Yeah, I found mine didn’t really like the smaller stuff but maybe I should have tried it as a quad!?
Maybe it’s the quad. I don’t usually ride quad’s. I tried this board first as a tri fin, but I never do that anymore. All my other boards are tri fins only.
Hey Wooly. would you have the Monsta Box 2020 squash (if you have been on one yet) in the same quiver (bells/winki) or are they a bit alike? I have read the P2 has a higher wave ceiling. Thanks Ricky
Hey Mate, I have just landed the new JS Monsta 2020 and Monsta Box 2020 both in a squash tail in the PU construction. I would say the Monsta Box and Pyzalien 2 are very similar but the Monsta Box can be surfed in a bit more grovelly conditions where as the Pyzalien 2 can be ridden in a bit bigger surf but struggles in the real small stuff. Thanks mate
Thanks a lot for your input Wooly
Love your reviews mate (and I'm your size, so they are very helpful). Just wondering if the Chilli Hot Knife is on your radar?
Wooly TV Which is better as a one board quiver the Pyzalien 2 or the Hayden holy grail in your opinion?
I think the Pyzalien 2 would surf better in overhead surf and the Holy Grail would be better on the lower scale. I personally like the Pyzalien better but i dont think it would grovel small waves for me. Hope that helps
Wooly
Hey bro I'm just over 6'0 and 86 kg. Have surfed a long time and know what I'm doing but don't fully rip. Go the next size up you reckon?
Hi mate, yes I would go up to the 6'2" at a minimum.
Have you ridden a rare bird by chilli? If so how did it compare to the pyzalien 2 in over head?
Thanks brother
Hi mate, sorry I havent ridden a rare bird
Hi There - Question for ya: If the waves are consistently shoulder high and above, would you recommend this board? I already have a step up for when it gets heavy but I'm looking for something for when it's a little too small for my step up. Thoughts?
Hi Paul
Well you are lucky!!! I loved the Pyzalien, it just felt like a board that I could jump straight on and just surf the same I normally do. Its the perfect board for shoulder high to well over head. Its def not a groveller, its suited to head high surf with the nice low rails through the tail. Its a perfect board to sit under a step up.
Where do you normally surf?
Cheers
Wooly
@@WoolyTV Hello guys, I have the same question than Paul but I live in Indo. I'm looking for a board to surf when it's 4-5ft perfect and barreling. I've a Ghost for the bigger days. Thanks in advance !
@@mathiasgiacardy785 Hi mate, when you say 4 to 5’ do you mean wave faces shoulder to head high? If so, then the Pyzalien would be great. If you want something between the Pyzalien and the Ghost then maybe a Shadow?
@@WoolyTV I mean head high ++ and not a performance board as I'm 40yo and inter/advanced surfer. I want something easy to paddle and forgiving, but which can handle hollow and be manoeuvrable. Cheers Wooly !
@@mathiasgiacardy785 Ok, what about a Mini Ghost? I havent ridden one yet but I will!
How does the Pyzalien 2 compare to Air 17x? Which one do you prefer?
Hi mate
Both were really good boards. Air 17x would surf down to the smaller stuff a little better and the Pyzalien would surf up to overhead surf a bit better.
Hope that helps
Would you prefer the xero gravity over this one?
I do. I find the Xero Gravity more versatile.
Hey wooly which board is faster and has more flow the pyzalien 2 and the original monsta box? (not 2020)
Thanks brother
The MB in smaller surf, but both pretty similar in shoulder high or bigger. I found the MB to grovel better and the P2 better when overhead.
@@WoolyTV got it. Thanks so much brother
@@reefslug No worries
last tune was a banger
Aren't they all? ha ha
How does board compare again the js bb3 or mb2020? Trying to get a good all round 1 quiver board. Not sure which one between bb3, mb2020 or pyzalien would be best for waist to head high beach breaks? Love you channel, keep up the great work.
Thanks mate. What type of waves did you mainly surf? Waist to head high punchy beach breaks or are they lacking power? If the weaker side then the BB3, if they have a bit of punch the Mbox. I found the Pyzalien 2 worked best above shoulder high and had a bigger upper range than the Mbox.
@@WoolyTV I would say knee to waist high beach break, no huge power. Also still just a beginner surfer but trying to find my next board. Not sure what else would be a good go to board to progress on. Thanks for the reply. Cheers.
@@cobussnyman3032 I would go the BB3 or the Monsta Box in the Easy Rider DIMs. Best to go for the HYFI construction as that is more lively in the smaller surf.
@@WoolyTV Great, thanks for your input. 👍🏻
@@cobussnyman3032 No worries
Ripping! I from WA too, was just wondering where in WA you are surfing?
Luca P if you know you know
Chad . I think I have an idea about where he towing in
Some south of Perth, some in the metro area and a little up north. Not trying to be a dick but I think its better if we don't name spots. I like to travel and surf without upsetting the locals.
U need to show us the board man ,pick it up a spin it around cheers.
Cheers for the feedback.
You need to state your height and weight. Hard to know what you mean when you are talking about relative dimensions otherwise
Hey mate, I just updated the descirption.
I am riding a 6'1 x 19 3/4" x 2 5/8" - 33.1l (I'm 87kg and 6'1)
@@WoolyTV Hey mate I'm actually the exact same height and weight as you.
I'm thinking of getting the Pyzalien 2 at 6’2” x 20.00” x 2.63” | 34.90 Liters
I'm an intermediate working on my advanced maneuvers. I noticed you said at 7:25 that if you would go back you'd get the 6'2".
My skill level isn't nearly where you're at so I'm tripping that those dims aren't quite for me. Do you just like to ride with more volume in your boards, given your skill level??
For reference, I got a 6'0" CI Rocket Wide (6’0" x 20.5" x 2.75" | 37.0L) and I love it! I think the Pyzalien 2 would be a great intermediary to move down to.
For reference, I live in Indo. There's definitely a case to be made that I should ride a Pyzel Ghost but I'm not sure I'm ready to get a high-performance shortboard like that just yet.
Let me know if you can give me some insight.. thanks for the review BTW. Cheers dawgy!! Yewww
You never show us the full board from the bottom please do it in future vids please . Thanks
Yeah that vid is a very early one. I have changed the structure a lot since that one. Have you watched the newer ones? If so, what do you think?
