It's pretty much the only thing he ever said that didn't make me want to wedgie him, and it's questionable if he meant it or not.

Now, Aurora Jones, while I think you might have a point somewhere in your statement, I think a person from old money just might have an easier time fending for themselves in many instances than a poor person and the reason I say that is because poor people, and I mean very poor people, are often completely dependent upon their families just to survive and not end up homeless or starve to death. They often have little to no education and have, in many instances, ended up dropping out of school because they need to for one reason or another. I would even go as far as saying that one of the primary reasons why poor people might end up staying poor is BECAUSE they lost their family, their money, or their contacts.
In comparison, a spoiled rich kid probably has a decent education and he can probably read, write and negotiate, and those are probably three of the most if not the most important things for a person to succeed. Make no mistake, I know full well there are plenty of poor people that can do the same if not perhaps even better, but I think we both know that they are few and far, far between. If there were more poor people who were great negotiators, there probably wouldn't be such a high crime rate among poor people, because they'd be able to talk their way out of trouble more often, or they'd be able to work things out before it came to the point of violence.
My point, however, is essentially this - that scenario would be ridiculously unlikely for anyone from any walk of life to succeed, especially poor people. To say or imply that people from old money are failures because they probably wouldn't succeed at this scenario you've presented is like saying that someone is weak because they can't carry 500 pounds of metal. There are no doubt some who can do it, but they are exceptional and it is not in any way reasonable to expect the average person to ever be capable of that.
I might even go a step further and say that there are almost no poor people alive who ever "made it" on their own because they couldn't survive without help from each other. I know that you most likely wouldn't believe such poor people to be unworthy of your respect, but that is the logical conclusion of your argument, that if there are poor people who ONLY made it because of their family and contacts, that they are not worthy of respect.
Edit: And I genuinely don't think you would agree with that statement.

My friends who are kindergarten teachers have had unwelcomed, and totally inappropriate advances at their jobs...mostly from their student's daddies. Us women should just not leave the house, not even shop or stand outside. We can't handle it.
