this is one of the only versions I've heard that doesn't sound like a competition between the two singers; their voices complement each other perfectly.
NO ONE does this song like these two. No one. It's perfect. Duality of their voices which somehow does not hinder their blending. Christine's tone is so beautiful and just makes you want to sigh, and then Linda comes in and her velvet voce just mades your heart swell....Amazing.
I"m gonna go ahead and toss Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner up for consideration. They are quite a formidable duo. Check out some of their Feinstein's/54 Below recordings. Magical.
People NEED to leave Linda and Coleen apart! They are two entirely different women. Two totally different voices. Linda and Coleen are good in their own ways. Everyone has their opinion of who is better. Leave your rude comments to yourself!
Considering the whole play was written around Linda Eder's voice I don't think you can compare anyone to Linda at her because she's the reason why it became a Broadway show
Think of how hard it would be to sing a duet with Eder...To try to be heard over her huge voice and then to sound nice while being compared to her would be so hard! Noll does a great job!
my voice teacher knows them! hes helping me learn this and told me to buy their version of this and i fell in love with it. such an amazing song for two amazing voices. bravo
@Lindow That's exactly what I was thinking all the time. Somehow Linda breaks through your heart and holds on to it. She puts so much emotion into it, that you simply believe that she is really Lucy, and not Linda playing Lucy. She really touches me.
1st of all, (the obvious), Christiane and Linda killin' it every single time. 2nd of all, I love that there are actual musicians performing w/ them on the show! I'm so sick of the pre-recordedness on these shows nowadays slash no orchestra on Broadway. BLAH.
But not really though. A 10-pc group of musicians with 2 keys using synth is not an ORCHESTRA, that's called a BAND. I'm talkin' a delicious (minimum) 23-pc orchestra with full strings 😍
Looking at this after having worked with a number of singers over the years, not only is this a really, really great performance: I am blown away by the fact that they sang this early in the morning wearing corsets. Those are long high powered notes!
wow this is nothing short of brilliant. it makes me want to cry because a) it's such an absolutely gorgeous and heart-wrenching song and b) i'm a striving musical theater devotee, but when i listen to women with incredible voices like these it makes me realize that i will never be that astounding... this is complete perfection. fabulous!
It has a beautiful sound. Their voices go together so well. Imagine all the practice they went through to be able to do this live. Both of them have very unique and beautiful voices.
This is the first time I have heard someone who is just as amazing as Linda. Both of them are fantastic. I have always been a Linda Edder fan sine the first CD that I picked up called The Scarlet Pimpernel. I fill completely in love with this woman's voice. From her rich and strong lower range to that incredible hight. (You have to listen to Man of La Mancha to appreciate her range. Its hard for me not to compare other female voices in this genre that have sung with her. Here both are amazing!
2:35 repeat.repeat.repeat. she effin nails it. 3:00 repeat.repeat.repeat. they nail it. and both of these on the recording, on constant repeat as well. !!!
I had the pleasure of seeing these two ladies perform this number live and it was the first time I had ever experienced a "show-stopping number'. The applause went on forever. It was incredible.
All I ever knew from the show was "Someone Like You" and "This Is The Moment." I love this song! Now I have to see this whole show... I always adored Linda Eder, now Christina Noll has a new fan, too :) Wow...
Both such amazing performers. Christiane was great in Ragtime and everything else she does. and Linda Eder in anything. Linda's performance of Don't Rain On My Parade was INCREDIBLE
+Rachel Q That would be Christiane Noll (soprano, playing Emma Carew) and Linda Eder (mezzo-soprano, playing Lucy Harris.) They were the original leads in Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical. If you're not familiar with it, check it out. It's a great show!
+Jessica Zeller Thanks, I did see the show, enjoyed the hell out of it but couldn't remember the name of the two female leads. I remembered the male lead, Colin Wilkenson. It was back in 199....something. Thanks again.
+Rachel Q Was that just a recording? I don't think Colm played the role on stage. He was Jekyll/Hyde in the Concept Recording in 1990, and Linda Eder sang both Lucy and Emma (back then she was called Lisa.)
Jessica Zeller I have a 2-CD concept recording with Anthony Warlow, Linda Eder and Carolee Campbell. Still the best recording in my opinion, but I would love to hear almost anyone sing the songs from J&H !! Yes, I even liked David Hasselhoff !
Absolutely amazing. It just does not get better than this. I would almost die to be able to sing with such passion and feeling and having a good voice would be nice too. I am going to see the show in our summer series here in pittsburgh
This is really interesting to watch in terms of star quality: Christiane Noll has a beautiful, very well trained voice and really does everything right but when you compare her to Linda who's less perfect yet has so much coming out of her eyes let alone her voice without even trying hard all you want to do is watch Linda.
i think that they're both equally incredible. and linda eder sings VERY legit. otherwise she could not pull of such performances as Man of La Mancha (she sopranos a high G), and her 1988 star search performance. i don't know, just my opinion.
While Linda's voice is much more controlled I still enjoy Coleen's performance of this song better. Don't get me wrong in the performance on the DVD Coleen goes flat at the end, but she's much more emotional and believable in my opinion, and often that's more important.
Lucy is supposed to be older! The whole point of "A New Life" is that she isn't too old to try again and that this is her final chance to do so! It gives more for the audience to grip onto in Lucy's character. Linda Eder's voice is perfect for the role (because it was written for her), but her acting falters. But Colleen Sexton was in no way "correct" for the character of Lucy, both vocally and character-wise. And Linda was only 31 when she started as Lucy. Plus Jekyll is technically 50.
@@rhiannonj2918 average life span and typical life span are completely different. The average is brought down by all sorts of things (infant mortality is a huge one, work-related deaths, and other such things). If you look at your own ancestry, you'll probably find that a lot of your ancestors lived up to their 80s and that mid 20s were a typical age for western European women to marry and late 20s or early 30s was pretty typical for western European men.

Name a more iconic duo. I'll wait.
I"m gonna go ahead and toss Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner up for consideration. They are quite a formidable duo. Check out some of their Feinstein's/54 Below recordings. Magical.
Idina and Chenoweth. *mic drop*
... Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde
Bert and Ernie!
People NEED to leave Linda and Coleen apart! They are two entirely different women. Two totally different voices. Linda and Coleen are good in their own ways. Everyone has their opinion of who is better. Leave your rude comments to yourself!
Lauryn Stewart I agree! Coleen was 22 when that movie was filmed! She was 20 when she debuted in the role, she was so young!! She did a fantastic job
Considering the whole play was written around Linda Eder's voice I don't think you can compare anyone to Linda at her because she's the reason why it became a Broadway show
THIS... is the perfect version of this song. The standard. The end all be all. Both crush it then and both still crushing it today.
Think of how hard it would be to sing a duet with Eder...To try to be heard over her huge voice and then to sound nice while being compared to her would be so hard! Noll does a great job!
This is my absolute favorite duet in musical theatre history! Not to mention one of my favorite shows. So beautiful and entrancing.
I was so lucky to see them do this on Broadway. I'll never forget this duet.
my voice teacher knows them! hes helping me learn this and told me to buy their version of this and i fell in love with it. such an amazing song for two amazing voices. bravo

Almost all , if not all, broadway musicals use an orchestra.
But not really though. A 10-pc group of musicians with 2 keys using synth is not an ORCHESTRA, that's called a BAND. I'm talkin' a delicious (minimum) 23-pc orchestra with full strings 😍
Roguelle ohh i get what you mean, yea a proper pit orchestra makes musical theatre so much more effective
I saw this whole cast in 98 and was just florred by THIS particular song. Amazing..
Same!
Looking at this after having worked with a number of singers over the years, not only is this a really, really great performance: I am blown away by the fact that they sang this early in the morning wearing corsets. Those are long high powered notes!
both of these women are flawless.
this is amazing

The blending of Linda and Christiane's voices is just amazing! Awe inspiring.
I saw these two on Broadway! Spectacular
I almost started crying, so beautiful
What a treasure this is. Thank you so much for sharing. Absolutely beautiful.
I keep listening to this gorgeous duet over and over. These two women were perfect for their roles. Such amazing voices!
It has a beautiful sound. Their voices go together so well. Imagine all the practice they went through to be able to do this live. Both of them have very unique and beautiful voices.
Saw Linda Eder two years ago at Playhouse Square in Cleveland. Her voice is phenomenal, crystal clear. She is incredible and unforgettable live!
Saw this in Broadway about a dozen times because if these two ladies. The Original cast was amazing!
That was amzaing, I started tearing up while listening to it.
Absolute perfection . . . nobody does this song justice after these two stellar singers
Beautiful. One of my favorite songs.

This is definately the best version I've heard! So effortless.
The most beautiful duet EVER!!!! And I’ve heard em all♥️🥰🙌🏼♥️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

beautiful women... beautiful song... beautiful rendition!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so very much for posting this rare clip. Linda is just WOW. The bomb. And stunningly beautiful in this. Thx.
EFFORTLESS! :O Goosebumps all over! :D
This should have more views than all other versions! So much love. Great intonation, tone, and passion!
The best this song has ever been done! Fan-freakin-tastic! Such a great song
This is an amazing, amazing, AMAZING clip! I freakin' love you for putting this up! Thank you 1,000 times!
1:57 gives me chills every single time I watch this. I freaking adore Linda Eder!
wow, this was on NBC! I feel like TV has gone downhill and would be more hesistant to play something like this nowadays :(
Very well sung. Both have very different voices but both sung well in different ways.
I couldn't agree more! She's a phenomenal talent! What a voice!
Priceless, thanks for sharing...
I agree possibly best duet ever written.
An incredible emotional rendition
Hermoso ¡¡¡¡ No hay mas palabras ¡¡¡ Estas señoras tienen un maravilloso don ¡¡
great performance, I love christiane! I wish I could sing like her!
Two beautiful voices in a fantastic song. AMAZING! :)
WOW. It simply gave me chills. So beautiful. Thank you so much for uploading this video.
Who are these magnificent sopranos? Outstanding and astounding. (my best superlatives). Bravo!

recalling amazing memories!
linda eder is so beautiful!! oh i love her so much
Just glorious 🙌🏼♥️🙌🏼
Absolutely amazing. It just does not get better than this. I would almost die to be able to sing with such passion and feeling and having a good voice would be nice too. I am going to see the show in our summer series here in pittsburgh
I just could cry by listening!!
Breathtaking!
Sooooooooooo beautiful!
This is amazing. :)
Amazing.....just amazing.
Beautiful voices!! Linda is the best!!
this is like Battle of the Divas! Superb!
I got the CHILLS! What talent! Oh my!!
wonderful!
This is what Performance is about.
@Lindow you are pefectly right... very nice assessment and i agree to you.
amazing. those to have the most beautiful voices.
linda eder has always been my favourite :)
WOW--- Amazing...
Amazing!
woah. I never saw this. Christian Noll and Linda Eder were perfect for these roles.
thank you!
That was perfect.
Linda Eder is the BEST Lucy, and Christian Noll is the best EMMA! They're amazing!
wow...3 Miley Cyrus fans heard this and got scared and disliked it....this is the best rendition i've ever heard
I love this
SO good
I love them..I miss my costume. =(
she created the role.
Sublime!!
Very good!
never heard this song before but its beautiful!!
@mkw2011ap
Christiane Noll, who was nominated for a Tony this year for playing Mother in the recent revival of Ragtime.
@lolkittehs34 andrea rivette and collen sexton are definitely second, but there's a reason these two are the originals (and best)
This is really interesting to watch in terms of star quality: Christiane Noll has a beautiful, very well trained voice and really does everything right but when you compare her to Linda who's less perfect yet has so much coming out of her eyes let alone her voice without even trying hard all you want to do is watch Linda.
FIRE & ICE = MAGIC!!!!!
but i still love Linda's voice too. should have pointed that out. she has so much passion when she sings.
Linda Eder seriously looks so good here.
I heard too many songs like this in my parent's car. LOL :D
BEST BEST BEST
i think that they're both equally incredible.
and linda eder sings VERY legit. otherwise she could not pull of such performances as Man of La Mancha (she sopranos a high G), and her 1988 star search performance.
i don't know, just my opinion.

THAT was ridiculously amazing. :D But damn, the accompaniment could've used a few pointers. Was it just me, or did it feel really slow?
@SkyNessa321 wow seriously? Linda Eder is Lucy!
I wish i saw jekyll and hyde on brodway but i was only 7 at the time =[
Lucy is supposed to be older! The whole point of "A New Life" is that she isn't too old to try again and that this is her final chance to do so! You are aware the average life span back then was a lot longer. If Lucy was 20, that's probably more than half her dang life
Also, the role was literally written for Linda!
Both put a different perspective of Lucy as a character. And I love both

In comparison to Linda, Noll has a more classical tone, it's more effortless sounding to me, more natural :)
@RosesNightengales Wait, who's Linda??? I thought it was Lucy!!!
