    The Old Fashioned is true to the cocktail definition; spirits, bitters, water & sugar. Usually recipes call for a Bourbon or Rye Whiskey but today we’ve used a Hybrid Whiskey - essentially a Bourbon & Scotch blend. Personally I like the sweet spiciness from using a rye whiskey yet this is a good tweak on the classic nonetheless.
    INGREDIENTS
    - 60mL Bourbon Whiskey
    - 10mL Sugar Syrup (2:1)
    - 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
    HOW TO
    1. Fill a mixing glass with ice
    2. Add ingredients to the mixing glass
    3. Stir for 25 seconds or until adequately diluted
    4. Strain over fresh ice into a double old fashioned glass
    5. Garnish with a twist of orange peel
    NOTES
    The original recipe calls for a sugar cube, soaked in bitters and muddled before adding the ice and whiskey.

    Being a bartender on wall street, i would put a chunk of sugar, 4 drops bitter, a dash of club soda, smash everything, add ice and put 2 oz of bourbon, stir the drink with a bar spoon... rub the orange peel around the rim of glass, and put the orange peel on toothpick on top of drink.

    The old fashioned has to be the most bastardized cocktail in history. If you watch 20 videos on how to make one, you’ll see 20 different people using 20 different recipes. I never order one when I go out because I have no idea what I’ll get.

    What’s the difference between an old fashioned and a manhattan? Genuinely curious

    • @StevetheBartender_
      @StevetheBartender_  7 місяців тому +1

      Old fashioned = whiskey, sugar, bitters served on ice
      Manhattan = whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters, stirred with ice and served up

    Just a dumb question, i don't really like the sound of "Bitter" we got the stuff, have not had the pleasure of needing it yet, we love to Make Whiskey Sours, but now want to try an Old Fashion, are bitters.....really BITTER ? there is this Whiskey made by a company called Screwball Whiskey... they've blended it with.... Peanut Butter...and a drink they suggest, An Old Fashion... gonna try it.

      They are not, while bitters do taste a little bitter if you taste it on their own (which you typically don't), nearly no cocktails that use bitters actually taste bitter at all, only having the aromatics. That is also why only a few dashes is required

    you may want to consider building it and stirring it right in the glass. If you treat it like a martini youll find the drink becomes too watery.

    • @StevetheBartender_
      @StevetheBartender_  5 років тому +2

      Depends how long you stir it for...

    • @gianthills
      @gianthills 5 років тому +2

      sure, thats one consideration. Also the quality of ice and the amount of ice. The ice youre using looks like it melts pretty quickly and theres a lot of it. Im not sure what is gained by stirring then transferring it to the glass with more ice. Although you wouldnt be the first.

    • @StevetheBartender_

      DAMON MARCUS to be honest, I prefer to make it with a sugar cube... made straight in the glass.. then you get the grainy, sugary paste..and the drink develops as you drink it.
      The ice is from a hoshizaki machine - 28mm solid cubes.

    • @gianthills
      @gianthills 5 років тому +1

      @@StevetheBartender_ the sugar cube is good, some people prefer it, but i usually go with simple syrup because its just faster. i typically make the drink to be just right a couple of minutes after the guest gets it. If its made just right when served the drinking experience will be lost pretty quickly.

    Wrong!!!!! Get the ice correct first.....one large piece so it doesn't water down the flavor....i can tell a crappy old fashioned the second it has several ice cubes in it.
