You guys are amazing. Thank you so much!!
OHHH YURRRRRR!!!
#Drums #Drumming #DoubleBass
I realized just after I filmed this entire video that there was a hole in my sock. You'd think that since this is a video about double bass, I would have been smart enough to make sure I had a nice fresh pair of socks on. Whoops.
Oh, homeslice. You're fine. I don't even notice that my socks don't match.
No big deal, dude. The main focus isn't on your socks anyway, but I completely understand why lol
is this to highlight your poverty since stopping your job? ;) nice video man
I still managed to learn something in spite of the hole anyways. ;)
Awesome video man, I had not even repaired the hole in the socks, but anyway, I challenge you to do an analysis of some Brazilian metal bands (or drummers - what do you prefer) ! ooooooh yurrrrrrrrr from Brazil !
I’ve played double bass drums for about 35 years. One of the best training techniques I have developed is to be able to switch feet when playing single bass drum patterns so that you become as strong with the left as the right. Properly ambidextrous. Also executing rudiments such as paradiddles smoothly. All good stuff. Just blasting out 300 bpm is not good training. It’s important to learn feel and groove with your feet.
Agree 100%. I usually do exercises that focus on my left foot since I’m right foot dominant.
ambipedious
Great use of the hip flexors and fwench gwip
@drealmerz7 z Not really, it's quite a common joke made on drum videos.

Man don't hate... That drum teacher is bad ass. He would out drum all of us with his techniques. Its not like he doesnt know what hes talking about... And he's such a freaking nice guy. Don't be a douche.
Didn't know you can play slow drums O_o
To him it must be like slowly getting your butthairs ripped out
@@JohnWiIkesBooth 👈with a name like this, you better deliver the laughs.
he cheated and slowed it down! the opposite of spedup... i hate when i am accused of that! lol (Guitar)
Everyone starts slow my friend.

I never gonna use Distrokid but goddam that sponsor part was entertaining, informative and well explained...now back to double bass training GJ Samus
I've been a guitarist for 15 years and just got my first electric drum kit to play. It's so much fun. Thank you for making this video! You seem like the perfect channel to sub to learn how to play metal
I´ve got to say once more that I REALLY miss Sam´s vlogs because of how funny he is and how he made me laugh hysterically. PLEASE, Sam, make some vlogs now and then again so that I can get my laughs in as I used to. 🤘🏻
wow
OHHHHHHHHH YUUUUUUUUUURRRRR!!!!!
*slows down domination*
Sounds like happy from mudvayne
Vita E. I don’t hear it
Vita E. Nvm I hear it now
When I first got a double pedal the first song I played was Angel of Death...
I think I might of sprinted before learning to walk.
Damn kid!! I went to your channel and saw your cover, actually really damn good! Guess that payed off! 👍✌️🤘
Psycho Metal Kid that’s hard fucking core bro
Mine was one by metallica of course
Psycho Metal Kid not if you were able to play it correctly
Yeah when I first started playing double bass I was pretty good at twitching somewhat cleanly but my horrible practice routine (going months without playing at all) that ability to twitch has left me completely lol. I really should start from scratch properly.
I'd say that Silvera by Gojira is another great song to learn double bass on. It's not too fast or too complicated if you've played double bass for a couple of months.
Only Pain and Pray are also great songs but those require some faster double bass playing.
Toxic Garbage Island is another great Gojira song to learn double bass.
I guess we could say that any Gojira song is good for learning double bass. :D
That’s one of the first double bass songs I got good at. It’s fairly easy all around too.
@@johannes4218 esoteric surgery *cough*
Watching this at 5:30AM and the Cloa-ca-ca-ca-ca absolutely broke me. Great job, as always Sam!
I like how much you like Nick Barker. Despite having been in big groups he's pretty underrated. Insanely fast.
0:16 "were gonna make this as cymbal as possible"
Nostalgic. Dead skin mask by Slayer was the very first double bass song i learned
Though I'm not a drummer, I hear some pretty gnarly double kick stuff on some early Candlemass albums that don't sound too hard to play
Some people on this channel would only be satisfied with Bleed and Nile songs on here.
Yeah no shit, bruh
"What do you mean they aren't easy?"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bleed is overrated
AsAbove SoBelow if you think it’s overrated you don’t understand how hard it is
Samus,
I have recently started to "workout" double pedal in hope of achieving good tempos by the end of the year. The exercise consists of 2h hours of 15minute exercises.
One day I play something like this:
1. sixteenths with leading right hand (eights) and left on "snare" (quarters), leading right foot
2. sixteenths with leading left hand (eights) and right on "snare" (quarters), leading right foot
3. sixteenths with leading right hand (eights) and left on "snare" (quarters), leading right left
4. sixteenths with leading left hand (eights) and right on "snare" (quarters), leading right left
for first 15 minutes, then I switch to paradiddles + paradiddlediddles with only left foot (to exercise it more as it's my weaker limb). I play hands as sixteenths, and I play at the same time with left foot - I some times play sixteenths with only left foot, and sometimes I play twice as slow.
Second day I focus on alternating between legs and hands. Mainly left leg, again. Let's don't get too detailed here...
I start from rather slow tempos (around 90 for double pedal and 70 for alternating exercises) and increase 5 bpms per half an hour, so it's something like 90,95,100,105, after two days 95,100,105,110 etc.
Now, to get to the point... Is it a good idea to do weird technical stuff on slow tempos and then very slowly increase in difficulty? What should happen when I get to the threshold? At 140bpm I was unsatisfied with results, so I came back to 90 and start all over again. Is it a good idea?
Kind Regards.
It’s always a good ideal to vary techniques and speeds ,if you can do something forward and backwards especially at any tempo you’ll be a monster!!!Best of luck
"If you're some kind of a weirdo and don't like Dream Theater." Exactly! As a DT fan, I'm sure you've seen Portnoy's Progressive Drum Concepts video, I like how he counts it as; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, sev, 8. That really helped me to nail down the counting. Fantastic video man!
Hey Samus, you're an excellent instructor!
Thanks for the video 🤘🏼😎
Great teacher!! Very clear/straight-forward and easy to understand and he seems to enjoy explaining the methods used 👍👍

Joseph Slinkard FUCCCKKKK YESSSS!!..\DECAPITATED/!!😈👹..ARE FUCKEN AMAZZZING LIVE!!.JUST SAW THEM!! PURE SICKNESS!
Thanks so much for the video sam ! Please do make more of these instructional videos, very extremely helpful!
Puritania is classic now. Damn made me feel old. I guess it was 20 years ago.
DUDE!!! I love that you show what music goes with what beats. THANK YOU MAN! What a cool guy...
This is a better primer than most double bass 'Lessons' out there. Using songs as opposed to just exercises makes learning this shit so much easier. Figuring out a difficult song is one of the most rewarding parts of playing drums. This video gave me some good shit to practice and learn. Thanks man.
Nice to see a drummer that properly counts music. Every time I talk about counting beats or any type of music every metal musician I meet thinks it’s weird, doesn’t understand, or thinks it’s dumb lol
I'm pretty sure if you are a drummer, in the pro area, you are bound to know how to count!
Omg, Pull Me Under was exactly how I started to learn double bass! I'm a big DT fan so I guess it was inevitable :)
That playing 16ths with the feet 6/8 beat is the ultimate for me.
So driving and so many fun fills and accents can be applied.
Stoked to have found this channel.
Came across it whilst binging on Eloy of Sepultura vids.
Cheers
Love how u lut your face over Joey's I have that posterboard..and one of fav dt tracks. That whole album is great
Great video! Only drummer I'd add is Cozy Powell! Definitely an innovator w/ the double bass and a good place for drummers to start!
What is awesome about this lesson is that I know every single one of the songs! This is why I love metal so much!!! *METAL FOR LIFE*
Some other good songs for starting double bass are:
Morbid Angel - Where the Slime Live
Cancer - Hung, Drawn and Quarted
Obituary - Chopped in Half
Obituary - Dying

one that i’ve found fun to practice to isn’t really a metal song but it’s still good practice!
road train by king gizzard and the lizard wizard has a fun double kick groove through pretty much the whole song and it’s helping me get accustomed to maintaining accurate double hits. the transitions are a bit weird but it’s still a good song!
2:22 I thought you would say "Angel of death" lmfao
In Flames - Colony was my first double bass song. Recommend it. It has db parts and chill parts to calm down and rest between. The speed is also not crazy.
Great work Samus! Keep the content coming!!!
I woke up this morning and though I wounded what Sam has been up to. I opened up UA-cam to find a 20 minute video of complete bad assery. Honestly man love everything you do! Keep it up
Nice video. I especially like the fact that you present songs which I can look up and play along to. And get to know some new music. Awesome!
Bruv! Just got my set today! Why is this so hard!! Love the content!
My 2 y old loves this video-a lot of air drumming and head banging. And the sock hole is priceless!!!
Great stuff, Samus, please keep these tutorial videos coming! The topic of the next lesson could be... cavity blast??
And yes, more vlogs!!!
Thank your for showing us more about the wondrous world of double bass
Dude you are a fantastic educator. Keep it up!
From someone who has literally just arrived home with a double bass pedal THANK YOU!
thx Sanus for this ! pretty good learning beat !
Again,we are blessed by talent.
I also recommend Sonata Arctica - Don't Say A Word. Straight double bass and you have to work with your hands on different sides of your kit. Great song to learn!
The best album that serves me greatly for my begining in double bass was "Believe" from Disturbed, 100% recomended
Thank you for sharing this
Wow spheres of madness!!! What a beautiful song, makes me so happy to play and listen
Man!! Fully engaging stuff!! Killer channel!
Great video, thanks for all your content! Super helpful!
Mint loving these lessons 👌
My first double bass song was Pull me under. Then Dance of Eternity. The latest song was Overactive Imagination by Death.
Sid 666 you went from pull me under straight to the dance of eternity?
Aidan Riess The dance of eternity is difficult because of the time signatures but in doble bass terms is pretty simple
I enjoy your videos. Due to COVID-19 lock down, I picked up sticks again after 26 years of not playing/retirement. Awesome information. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.
I learned a lot thanks for the lessons 😻
One is a great example of double bass groove of a short burst of double kicks
Ive been watching all your videos since i bought my first drum set a month ago! I got the Domination beat down!!! Thank you so much for your videos, you're an amazing drummer! Heard you were from winnipeg aswell! Keep rockin \m/
One thing I love about music especially rock. And metal is that you can have the same beat and way to play it but it can sound almost completely different because of the pacing and so some songs could just be the same from a band but different tempos and we might not even notice it
Laid to Rest was one of my first double kick songs. Gotta love double-kick triplets. Went to Ruin like immediately after.
"If for some reason you're some kind of a weirdo and you don't like Dream Theatre..."
😆😛
THIS IS THE FIRST TUTORIOL THAT IS ACTUALY GOOD FFS FINALY SOMEONE WHO CAN SLOW DOWN THINGS AND NOT SHOW OFF THANKS SAMUS
Check Erce Arslan he's even greater
Great video men! Please make more of these, keep it up!
One of the songs I used to acclimate myself to double bass was Morphogenesis by Scar Symmetry. Really easy groove for newbies to double bass.
Extremely helpful, thanks for the help
Great video and really amazing drum sound.
You make learning drums pretty frippin fun. Keep it up the good work my doode.
14:09 I was waiting for it
Thanks for the suggestions man. I am on a double bass mission for more control so the intermittent patterns are very helpful. Another suggestion if we all love Gene Hoglan (and we do) the verse section from The philosopher from Death.
Not gonna lie I’ve always had difficulty doing double bass but this is gonna help me out for sure. Seems like I always rush it instead of practicing. Glad I subscribed to your channel!
At first I was like "Disturbed?" But honestly it is a great example for new drummers to go by. You have a vast knowledge and a welcoming personality that keeps me coming back to your channel. Also, Love? is my favorite SYL track to date.
If I were to include a suggestion or two in this, it would be The Sound of Truth by As I Lay Dying, or The Light that Blinds by Shadows Fall.
Dude!!! Thank you so much for making this video. I never listened to metal growing up, but I wanted to learn double bass because of the Doom Eternal soundtrack. Now I have a great playlist to learn double kick with!
You my good Sir are an absolute Legend !!!!!
Unreal!!! Love your vids, Australia
Dude this list is awesome, it's pretty much the songs I used starting out.
I came hear for more beats I can experiment with these are even good with intermediate drummers there were 2 or 3 that I've never heard or used before so I have some new stuff to work with thank u so much
That's awesome. I'm motivated. I `ll stick it!
Socks....been through a few working on your demonstrated patterns. great stuff! Thanks!
This video is well timed - I'm looking after my brother's kit while he moves house, so I've merged it with my son's, creating an über-kit. I quickly realised I can't play twin-kick at all so this will hopefully help me.
Brann Dailor, Jason Bittner, and Chris Adler taught me how to play double bass. Damn good idols to have. That modern drummer Bittner/Adler dvd helped out a lot.
this was so helpful!!! thank you.
Молодец, браво! Спасибо!!! Ты помагаешь людям учиться.
such a good teacher
Awesome video Samus. Getting my double kick pedals shortly to go with my electric kit since I can't have an acoustic yet.
YES! SAMUS KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT I NEED!
That " OooOo YeAa"..just cracks me up evry time🤣🥇👑👍
Another great double bass song is Overkill by Motörhead. Drums all the way through and it’s very fun
This is so informative!, aside from House of Shame by Lacuna Coil being my go to for double pedal practice, this was very helpful 👍🙂
my favorite song for practicing double bass is "Death Dont Dance With Me" by Voodoocult, as played by the always gnar Dave Lombardo.
its pretty much non stop steady 16ths(i think, I'm not great at the theory) for the whole song, even through all the traditional long Lombardo fills!
there's a lot of amazing drumming on that album, but that's probably one of the easiest, as long as you have the longevity! 💚
Excellent, Great Tuition , I found it Easier Your way & less nerve wracking with Your Making it Fun with Well Guided Simplicity. Thankyou Man. O Yuuuurrrr! Iain UK
awesome dude, thank you!
My personal favorite for practice is The Grand Conjuration by Opeth, it's all about endurance but it gives you plenty of breaks as well.
Spheres of madness was my first double pedal song I think, such a sick tune
9:58 sound like Slaughtered by Pantera
Great video! Also nice that a Strapping Young Lad song is included!
You're the only one who can make playing 'Love?' seems relatively straightforward, fantastic video!
Aye this was so much fun to watch apart from your incredible command over playing! Thanks, Imma dive into these songs one by one, in the same order!! Cheers \m/
Great tips! I keep having to tell myself to learn slower songs, and these are all good places to start to build that stamina and technique. I have a tendency to just wanna play Dying Fetus and then fail miserably haha. Maybe I'll save the Love bridge until I'm more advanced :D I can't keep up with the Atomic Clock!
Thank you!!!🤘
Thank you so mush SAMUS!
I learned drum starting by domination and painkiller xD
Usefull stuff dude 👌
And again, congrats for working with Dev, you rock
