My monitor turned off during use; blue light stayed on. I resoldered C202 on the PSU board; a grey capacitor that had a broken solder joint. The monitor works fine now.
i had the same issue, i resoldered the big grey capacitor C202 as you said and now my monitor works perfectly! Thank you so much Joram!! Your help make me saving a lot of money!
Same problem here. After 6 years of use, it finally happened to mine. I'm not even going to attempt to repair it. Currently looking for new monitor. Funny thing is my really old dell 27" monitor, like 12 year old, still works.
I just started having this problem with my DELL U3011 if Itap it on the top or the side it will work for awhile then die again its not going into sleep mode the screen just goes black.
Same problem here, bought in 2011. Started doing it like a month ago. It goes like this. Morning, after being turned off for hours --> always turns on. Then after a few minutes, screen goes black. I turn it off, wait 1 min and then turn it on. I used to wait 30sec, but ot gradually got worse. If i wait less time, it won't go on. Repeat 2-4 times, then it would stay on for like forever. If I watch closely, I can see when it will turn on and when it won't and it will just stay off. It has to be the power supply, but no idea what exactly. This morning I had real trouble to turn it on, way more than usually, so probably time to order a new monitor, which I didn't want to, 'cause nothing on the market atm that I really like. Btw, where I live, temperature goes really low, mostly during the winter, and the room the PC is in goes down too, like few degrees below zero (celsius). I was wondering if, by any chance, the same thing goes for you guys too. Any chance it's related to the monitor being exposed to low temps for enough time. Probably not, but I am curious. Finally, why do you guys think that I have so much trouble "firing it up" and then it works for like hours flawlessly? I mean, I operated it for like 10-12 straight and never got black screen again, until I turned it off and let it cooled.
I had the same problem. I ended up switching to another monitor, then almost a year later the replacement monitor died. I still had the Dell monitor and decided to give it another try. It worked and remained working for months.. until I turned it off. Originally when it stopped working, was only because I turned it off. Now it comes back on for a minute or so and black screen.. Have to wait 30 sec or so to get it to come back. So it seems to be a heating up and cooling down issue with one of the parts, IMO. As long as that part remains at a constant temperature it's fine, but once it cools down and then heats back up, it expands or does something related to the temperature change, causing black screen. I'm hoping it's just a matter of it slowly getting back up to that nominal temperature range where it will stay on..
Replacement of the two diodes shottky on the right side of the power board did solve the problem and since then my monitor is working perfectly again. The two diodes are the last ones on the right side that are mounted on an aluminium heat dissipator. I have apicture but i don't know how to post it here.
So I also had the same issues. Monitor would blank out and I would need to tap the side bezel near the power button, and that sometime that would bring it back (sometime I hit hit a little harder). It would basically blank out within 10 min of booting the PC. After searching for a Month couldn't find any good solution. Today I was about to put it up on eBay for parts...see what I could get. But I did a little searching to see if there was some new solution. Found a guy that turned his resolution down. So tried it, and it worked. Had the monitor on running videos for 5 hours. But low resolution defeats the purpose of the monitor. Decided to use HDMI instead of the DVI I was using, and volla, it's running like a champ at 1920x1200 (doesn't give me an option for 2560x1600 anymore). I will live with it. Will save my pennies and get a LG 40" 40UB8000 60hz 4K monitor: ua-cam.com/video/hyJpaJvwlH8/v-deo.html
Same problem here. Bought it in 2010, just cropped up in 2018. Tapping it in the right spot seems to kick the backlight back on. I knew something was wrong when the builtin menus wouldn't even display.
Have the same issue. Previously it was intermittent but now the issue come up every day, sometimes have to turn it off and on 10 times to get it to work - sometimes it will work for hours and sometimes it will turn off in a minute. I noticed that when I turn it off and I see a blue "Dell" logo on the screen within a couple of seconds, then it will work, otherwise it will not and I can turn it off/on again without waiting for it to completely go through the lights above power button.
same problem here, ive more or less narrowed it down to the lower board with the plugs on it(not sure what its called). in my situation the monitor works brilliantly for hours after being unplugged overnight but if you leave it plugged in the next day you get this problem in a BAD way. I suspect the capacitors on that board are suspect and am debating replacing them all just for my own sanity because NO ONE seems to have a fix for this yet
I bought a second hand U3011 PSU on ebay and it solved my issue. It is probably NOT a bad capacitor issue, as I changed all of them and... nothing. I suspect it is one of the transformers, because one of the was producing an awful noise.
I'm experiencing exactly the same issue. It's also one of the first, bought in 2011. I'm planning to open it and check if I can find a bad capacitor, but it looks like more like a bad joint somewhere on the Tcon or inverter...
one of mine blew when i tried switching it on one morning. my second one flickers on and off for about 2-3 seconds each time whenever theres a current variation (i think) ... i notice that whenever my fridge motor starts up, the screen flickers...
The same to me... it's really bad thing.... I'm angry with Dell, they told me that it's out of guarantee and the only thing to do is buy another monitor because they haven't no Official Dell SAT.... iT'S A JOKE? - IT COST TO ME 1200Eur!!!!! I REALLY HATE A LOT DELL!!!!
I purchased one of these from Dell Australia in Sept 2012 and i fear this is happening to me. It happened briefly yesterday whilst playing on my old xbox (using the component connection) and again about 10 mins ago on my PC (dual link dvi). i tightened the connector and it hasn't happened since but i'm guessing that won't fix it. We'll see. When i tried accessing the menu on the screen it seemed to respond with its beeps but you couldn't see the menu on the screen. I got a "5 Years Premium Panel Warranty, Advance Exchange (Next Business Day)" included which expires Sept next year so if it's going to go on me, hopefully it happens well before then.
I have the same issue. I tried different interfaces, DVI vs DisplayPort vs even VGA! Same. Doesn't matter if it's connected to MAC or PC. After a while it blanks out. I think it's heat-related, not the screen but the logic that drives the screen gets hot and stops driving the screen. I have turned down brightness and sharpness way down, it's still usable but much cooler. So far so good after a day of use. Let's see what happens.
I have the same problem. I brought this monitor to a repair man. I received news that he had a problem to get to the electronics. He said that the outside was not to release, probably glued. Does anyone advice on this.
My problem is the same. Power LED remains on (blue) but randomly black / blank screen. Again, the LED remains blue, not changing to the orange power save mode. USB ports continue to work. There is a solution for a similar problem but a different Dell monitor. DELL RECOMENDS (I did not work for me, but maybe for some of you) * Disconnect EVERY cable from the U2518D (Power, USB, DP, mDP, HDMI, Audio) * Press and hold the U2518D power button for 10 seconds * Reconnect only the power cable to the U2518D * Press the U2518D power button - If the self-test mode screen appears, run the Built-in Diagnostics

No solution. I opened it up and found no obviously bad capacitors. I gave up and dumped the monitor. Dell was no help at all. I won't buy another Dell monitor.
i know this is old but mine a02 started doing the same thing...mot a lot but enough to force me to buy a new 4K screen(at least that is what i told the wife:)) so now i have a spare screen i have pulled mine down partly...nothing stands out as faulty so i decided to start pulling on thing like a caveman to replicate it. and low and behold the is a single wire on the bottom of the screen which i am assuming is ground(still need to dissemble more) but pull wire screen does the exact same blank, no menu but led's work screen is blank, plug it back in...back to normal. once i get it all the way apart i, m guessing there will be a dry joint or simply a loose connection(hopefully)
