I read an article in a science journal abut the difficulties of artificially growing truffles. They only grow on a certain type of tree root (and most truffle harvesters use pigs who can sniff them out - like a bomb or drugs-detecting dog). There is also specific climates, soil pH, soil mineral quality and even dew-point requirements for truffles to grow. The trees have to reach a certain maturity before the truffle has enough nutrients to grow to a proper size that creates a marketable truffle. The journal did say SOME researchers have had success in artificially implanting the spores to get the truffles to grow to maturity, but not a 100% success. Well, I’m assuming this video is about six years old. Ten years ago, someone I know invested $250,000 in land for a truffle plantation in Tasmania and that investment is now worth over $5million. It did take some time to achieve a return, but the increase in value of the land alone would have justified the investment. The business that operates on the land made it an insanely good investment.
And of course .... : After the show Simon chickened out. He only wanted to prove "something" to Rachel. Thats all to it. He didnt believe in the business , it was only an Ego Issue with him and Rachel. BTW I think its better like this , because Paul Thomas is doing very well without Simon Wood(wannabe)draf. Truffles have a symbiotic relationship with the roots of a tree. No one has been able to grow truffles on a industrial level because you need to right soil and the right tree that they grow on. He basically said I want to buy some land where I know truffles grow. If you could grow truffles he would grow them in a warehouse in London. He will also need truffle sniffing dog which would cost you 20k.
I like Ole' sideburns there. He always seems to be pleasant on this show, with nice things to say. With that being said, I mainly watch these clips for savage takedowns.
@@LM-kd2zm It's really not "massively successful." In 2019 they had profits of just under £127k having effectively broke even in 2018. Most years it's been well below £100k and rarely goes above that. Seeing as he was asking for £75k investment then, going on the £127k from last year, they'd need to have the lion's share (or Dragon's, I guess) of the business in order to see a return. It really wasn't an investment you'd see returns on so Peter wasn't wrong with the risk he mentioned... especially as it was likely filmed in 2005 and 15 years later barely making profits...
Living in Italy, we are full of truffle plantations for more than two decades, it's nothing new here and I can say safely that it works and makes money
The deal fell through, apparently afterwards he felt Simon was asking too much so he did went and did it alone. Seems to have done well as he finished his phD, is credited for creating the truffle farming industry in UK and owns over 20 plantations.

They were right about one thing, his business model was wrong. He was originally proposing becoming a truffle farmer. He later changed his business to a license/service model to help existing farmers and it's been a huge success.

Yeh, cracking eyes, too.
Imagine if he reall invested in the business He most certainly would have interfered too much and actually ruinied his Business. That guy has got a huge Ego but no Business Brain whatsoever. He is worse than Jenny EVER was. At least Jenny put her money where her Mouth was.... But hey lets take a piss on Jennys behalf and ignore the biggest Hypocrate amongst all Dragons, Simon Woodraf !!!
Glad I'm not the only one who never thought very highly of him. I could never stand the guy and found DD unbearable to watch at times when he was on it.
What is draf?
I'd say Doug Richard is the worst dragon.
I'd say Kelly Hoppen was worse - invested less than Jenny, but acted sneering and superior during every episode she was in.
Truffle are mainly on the roots of well established trees . The age of the truffles also acquire the distinct taste .
I like Ole' sideburns there. He always seems to be pleasant on this show, with nice things to say. With that being said, I mainly watch these clips for savage takedowns.
So you've been watching girl company makers mainly then 😉.
@@karendegenerous600 I have no idea what that means. Thank you though.......?
6:11 Was a right windy day
4:13 Peter wasn't wrong
Red letter days, enough said.
Peter truly acted idiotic in this episode.
Can we have more 30 second adverts pls
Nice humble chap with big ambitions. Pleased he was able to grow success.
Simon Woodruff's only investment in the den
And even this one fell through.
A very good pitch from a very personable young man.
I don't think the deal went through but the company seems to be doing well.
Turns out he's right. Making millions every year!
500k a year.
Turnover is vanity, profit is reality.
The deal fell through, apparently afterwards he felt Simon was asking too much so he did went and did it alone. Seems to have done well as he finished his phD, is credited for creating the truffle farming industry in UK and owns over 20 plantations.
That was obvious. Simon is all talk no action. Like a little child. I really cangt stand the guy. But anyway... the lad has got a good Truffles business today and is doing grand. Who needs a tosser like Simon woodraf, when you can find the Truffles alone ...
They were right about one thing, his business model was wrong. He was originally proposing becoming a truffle farmer. He later changed his business to a license/service model to help existing farmers and it's been a huge success.
Soil, type of tree and many other factors. We have the summer truffle in UK. They will be stolen by a bloke and a well trained dog. You can buy them cheaply.
Any info if he grew any and what happened?!
Yes - plantationsystems.com
"Our primary tree nursery bases are in the UK, USA and SA, but we operate in 23 countries worldwide
Our truffle distribution spans the globe"
So seems most of the dragons were wrong :D
Can I invest at that amount from all those years again then? Lol
According to business checkers and books filed by the company, his truffle company is now valued at over 1 million euros.
I’ll invest Aussie $10,000 lol
@@Stop_Pre-Ordering_Video_Games DAMN!
One of my fav pitches and results ever💙
Whenever I hear the word 'truffles' I just think of the truffle chocolates they used to have in Celebrations tubs. They don't do them in there anymore 🙁 they were great!
If actual truffles tasted like they did, I'd invest!
haha they’re very different
He was successfully able to grow truffle
Duncan - "How can you harvest truffles without security, yet how can you invest in security without the harvest. It's bizarre!"
Every Cannabis Farm owner EVER - "Hold my beer."
Shotgun shells, rat traps and fishing line …. Boom
Glad it worked for him
Saw him on the news afew years back when he got a truffle
Im glad he's successful now! Im also glad we have Deborah Meaden and Tej Levani...honestly watching the first season...there seemed to be so much ego and fighting compared to now.
I'd love to know how this turned out. He would of needed way more money to actually get it cultivated and harvested and protected, where is he and the workers living? In a tent? What about all the other costs involved?
He went on to become very successful. Google the name of the company. It's worth over a million euros. The BBC did a segment on him a while back.
The deal didn't go through but he succeeded in growing truffles in the UK
@@danriaz9678 oh wow Thanks :)
6:10 really windy
Mad storms yo
If I close my eyes when Simon Woodruff speaks, I think of Simon Cowell
This was Simon Woodroffe's one and only investment on the show and even this deal didn't go through.
So Simon left the show after one series without a single investment.
He was too pushy, see how he launched to shake the guy's hand, before he even accepted the offer?
They are indeed dragons.. Creatures that sit on their piles of treasure, hating to part from it for even a minute.. I didn't expect the cast would take the name of the show so literally, though! 🤣
Rachel Elnaugh ran a business into the ground. And declared herself bankrupt 😂 meanwhile Peter is worth 1.2billion today.
Should have mentioned he can grow the magic truffles also 😉 surely would have changed their minds .
