- Paul Thomas is asking for £75,000 in hopes to cultivate black truffles in the UK but surprisingly, Duncan has never heard of them. 'Mycorrhizal Systems' say it will take 5 - 7 years in order for an investor to see a return on their money...
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

According to business checkers and books filed by the company, his truffle company is now valued at over 1 million euros.
Good job, dude.
1.6 million to be exact. impressive
He's done a segment on the BBC aswell - ua-cam.com/video/CQ7H49lT4Mk/v-deo.html
Brilliant thanks I was hoping somebody would let me know this in the comments. I had been under the impression no one had managed to cultivate truffles yet.
@@JohnMativat Thankyou very much from Australia 🇦🇺👍 We got this a few hours ago and I look for comments like yours! Cheers for that.
Awesome, this makes me happy.
I can understand never having tasted truffle, but to never have heard of them I find incredible.
Square Peg they weren’t as popular 15 years ago. There’s been a huge truffle push over the last 5-10 years
Duncan plays unknowledgable on purpose to draw answers out of people, I suspect. 2 minutes later he's lecturing the guy on how valuable they are and the security needed.

My favourite thing to do while watching these episodes is going here beta.companieshouse.gov.uk and looking up the businesses. Sometimes it's hilarious when the dragons are tearing them apart and they end up being extremely successful! Many fail though.
plantationsystems.com/ Look how happy he looks now. He found great success.
Not too bad - given it's been 15 years his profit has been fairly consistent - for last year was 120,000 (which is great). Past few years range routinely between 30,000- 90-odd thousand profit.
beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/05363860/filing-history
I don't think it'd been a wise investment by dragons though, as 25% of the profit isn't a huge amount considering in the same timeframe, investing in S&P would have netted 334,000.

He's working class bloke who's grafted to the top, when this was first aired he was still reasonably new to being really wealthy, so I'm not that surprised. About a decade before this he was an ice-cream van driver, I doubt they're putting black truffle or gold leaf on Mr Whippys

Its genius.
They are still going succesfully and hes company was the first to cultivate truffles in the UK. For those wondering
Matt a website which hasn’t been updated since august 2019 indicates questionable success.
They have been successfully cultivating truffles in Australia for quite some time (Tasmania). Not sure when this episode aired.
Ken Rehill - A website like that wouldn’t necessarily need to be updated constantly. It’s basically just information. This episode is old anyways and even if the last update on the business from a year ago; that means it’s been somewhat successful for a bit.
@Badge Badge
This episode is about 15 years old. And I’m aussie and have never heard of Australian truffles or them coming from Tasmania and I’m sure they must only produce very little.
This guy had duncan holding his head within the first 7 seconds of his pitch lol
This guy is thriving and living his dream! Love to see it. Talk about a successful idea and company!
The company is still in business, making over 100k a year by helping others to grow truffles in their lands. I guess they changed model to be service based for some reason
Thanks, could you also link the source for that info? It's good practice for people to include links to source info on those things, otherwise rumours can easily spin around on the internet.
@@JesusJuenger yes, just looked up the company and their latest accounts here beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/05363860/filing-history
as for their service, that's what you find on their website plantationsystems.com/
100 K ? He told the turnover would be 1 Million a year.
Because growing your own truffles costs a lot land and work so it's more like the "uber" of truffles. You have your own land, they help you get truffles and get a cut.
Licensing the technology out is a great way to grow business and outsource costs. They probably still run some farms
This guy’s business now, he’s smashing it and fair play to him:

@@mrs.chandler9384
You can. It is exactly what this guy is doing. He has truffle sites all over the world including 30 in UK. He has a PhD in biology and ecology so he developed a special technique that allowed cultivation of black truffles.
I've always liked Peter Jones, still do, but just because he is rich, it doesn't give him the right to be aggressive arrogant or rude!
Faith Thomas I agree faith, but peter obviously thinks because he’s worth 450 million that excuses him
He's like this with any investment into herbs plants etc
Don't forget dumb. For this investment you can also buy 35 kilo (77 pounds) of truffels (at least back then, they are about double now). Owning a share in a buisness that can produce that kind of revenue is beyond amasing. This guy buisness is worth 2 million easy now, and it's just a small truffelfarm considering they pop around evrywhere today. Peter could have doubled his entire capital. Just saying.
He does it on purpose - to see how the guy would react under pressure. You have to remember - this is a TV show, EDITED to add drama. The pitch itself is 1-2 HOURS long. It's edited down to 10 min...
That's literally his personality - aggressive, arrogant and rude. He's a mediochre business man that's most famous for being on telly. What is you like about him?
I remember watching this when it initially aired. I knew it would work. Well done to the guy. Ahead of his time. 7 years ahead lol

What! He bummed him ?!
A neighbour of mine had a truffle farm using this technique in Australia where he grew the largest truffle in the southern hemisphere... he made a fortune. This guy has a good idea and is even going to look at land in France where he further reduces the risk of failing. Rachel is actually very correct. Good for her. I wish she had invested.
This guy looks like he will be the next transporter in the transporter movies

I knew somewhere truffles had been on Dragons Den. He has changed his business model and I don’t know if he ever bought land in France? Yeh, cracking eyes, too.
Good lad! well done.
Truffles have a symbiotic relationship with the roots of a tree. No one has been able to grow truffles on a industrial level because you need to right soil and the right tree that they grow on. He basically said I want to buy some land where I know truffles grow.
If you could grow truffles he would grow them in a warehouse in London. He will also need truffle sniffing dog which would cost you 20k.
Simon Woodruff's only investment in the den
And even this one fell through.
Living in Italy, we are full of truffle plantations for more than two decades, it's nothing new here and I can say safely that it works and makes money
looks like he left school at lunchtime
to pitch to the dragons
Well, I’m assuming this video is about six years old. Ten years ago, someone I know invested $250,000 in land for a truffle plantation in Tasmania and that investment is now worth over $5million. It did take some time to achieve a return, but the increase in value of the land alone would have justified the investment. The business that operates on the land made it an insanely good investment.
He really did present well.
Soil, type of tree and many other factors. We have the summer truffle in UK. They will be stolen by a bloke and a well trained dog. You can buy them cheaply.
We never had Black Truffles when I used to come round for tea when we were at Preistnall high Paul! Briggsy.
4:13 Peter wasn't wrong
Red letter days, enough said.
Peter truly acted idiotic in this episode.
@@LM-kd2zm It's really not "massively successful." In 2019 they had profits of just under £127k having effectively broke even in 2018. Most years it's been well below £100k and rarely goes above that. Seeing as he was asking for £75k investment then, going on the £127k from last year, they'd need to have the lion's share (or Dragon's, I guess) of the business in order to see a return. It really wasn't an investment you'd see returns on so Peter wasn't wrong with the risk he mentioned... especially as it was likely filmed in 2005 and 15 years later barely making profits...
I remember this...it was the first episode I ever watched.
Cool story bro
Good luck to the lad.
I’m starting my truffle now, might just be ready to eat by the time lockdown ends

You can already buy inocculated trees, hazelnuts for instance. Growing time is indeed very long and you need a soil that is fit.
