  • Gjirokaster is a city in Albania that will absolutely steal your heart. I was not prepared for the incredible beauty that is hidden in this city. From it's traditional homes scattered on the mountainside, the idealic streets of it's UNESCO Old Town and its absolutely stunning fortress rising high above the city, Gjirokaster is a destination you will never forget. I hope you guys will enjoy this city guide alongside some beautiful drone shots! Make sure you don't miss it! xx

I am so happy that you get to experience this place, and I don't blame you a bit for calling the castle your favorite. The city appeared for the first time in historical records under its medieval Greek name of Argyrocastron (Greek: Αργυρόκαστρον), as mentioned by John VI Kantakouzenos in 1336. The name comes from the Medieval Greek ἀργυρόν (argyron), meaning "silver", and κάστρον (kastron), derived from the Latin castrum, meaning "castle" or "fortress"; thus "silver castle". Byzantine chronicles also used the similar name Argyropolyhni, meaning silvertown. The definite Albanian form of the name of city is Gjirokastra, of which derives from the Greek name. (WIKIPEDIA).

      I have one other option for to explained dhe etymology about the name Gjirokastër.
      Aργυρο(Ancient Greek)- Aσήμι(Today Greek)-No etymology from greek language.
      Argjënd(Alb)- gold white - etymology from albania language means ar(gold) + gjiri i gruas që nxjer qumësht të bardhë(the breast of the woman who produces white milk). This is also supported by the legend of the Gjirokastra castle.

    City was build by local people not Ottomans, and yes it reflected architecture at that time. That city is older than Ottoman empire 😁. Try to see Kruja castle just in case you change your mind about your favourite one 🤪❤

      @@NotTooExtreme Those old buildings that are still up standing they used for themselves. Anything else they destroyed. The castle of Kruja was razed to the ground from the ottomans in 1832 suppressing the rebellion against ottomans. Today's model has been renovated from the 50s to the 80s.
      The ottomans brought only destruction, misery and islam. Nothing else

    • @aspetosi
      @aspetosi 3 роки тому +2

      @@NotTooExtreme Not him, You are a fool.
      Of course they have destroyed most of the city, because it was a really big city , and now it's almost 1/4 of it not destroyed. That is what has remained over there from this ancient famous City.
      And those Buildings are Albanians, because you will see these kind of buildings only in Albanian cities, not anywhere else in Balkan.
      beside the fact ,that all Orthodox nations in Balkan have had great relations with Ottomans, for 400 years 'till 1800,
      because our Orthodox Patriarchate has its center in Istanbul, and you'll never see these kind of buildings in the rest of Balkans .
      Or maybe you can see those in some are of Istanbul , where I guess albanians are living.
      So, it does not make sense to say these buildings are otoman buildings, because if they were ottomans they would have been in all Balkan cities, where Ottomans had established their lives for 400 years

    • @NotTooExtreme
      @NotTooExtreme 3 роки тому +2

      @@aspetosi you can keep talking trash.
      The mosques, built till the 17th century, were commissioned by the Ottoman administrators or the Albanians who were recruited and brought up in the Ottoman capital. ... The “Cultural Revolution” of 1967 demolished the religious buildings either mosques or churches in Albania, almost “erased” them.

    Hi Alina! At 8:00, “hello?, hello?” Seems a little like some of those “Ghost Hunter” television shows - LOL! Ever consider that as a new endeavor? - LOL! Albania is such a beautiful mix of old European and Modern accents for buildings and amenities. Those people are truly special for taking into account their past and redefining their futures. Would be interesting to know what aspirations they have for their country. The scenery has captured my heart. BTW, be sure to get your rest after walking so much! ❤️
