Clarification: The XA40 does have built in ND filters, they just do not have physical manual controls on the body for them. Instead they automatically apply themselves when adjusting exposure.

So, with cameras like the XA50 and XF605/705 with the 1" type sensor, is the autofocus reliable enough that you can set up the camera for an event and walk away from it to control a hybrid camera with shallower depth of the field?
The obvious use case would be for filming weddings. Set up the XA50 at the back of the venue for a straight-on, locked-off shot of the whole event and walk away entirely while moving around with a mirrorless camera for creative, cinematic shots.
The 1" type sensor is an appealing middle ground for events because it can still blur out the background when you want to without so much focus hunting if people shift a little. But it's only good if the camera doesn’t need babysitting.

Thanks for the review. I was hoping that the footprint of the XA50 was the same as the XA20/30 but from what I hear ya saying, the XA50 is the physical size of the XF400 which to me means, keep my XF400 and keep on trucking'.
Please can you help me on the difference between the XA50 and the XF400. It seems the XF400 in larger with less battery life and it can record better quality slow motion but... it seems to stop there? They are very similarly priced. Which one is better?

Looking at the XA55 or the Panasonic X2000. Which is the better of the two for basically shooting home videos sometimes low light and zoom not important for me. Just want the best 4k video performance
Hi Is there a setting to activate the HDMI out in the XA40?
I have an XA10 that will connect fine but my new XA40 will not.

nice clean review as always. thank you for sharing. One question . Can the white balance be adjusted while the XA50/55 cameras are recording? I am asking as my xa20/25 cannot be adjusted. I have to stop the recording to be able to change the white balance.Very annoying . My Xf/100 and 200 have a physical/ adjustable button for that purpose. Thanks in advance
I have the same issue with the XA20 stabilisation shaking and the same with the XA45, i called the seller but he didn't sound interested, only talking about a repair, i have had it with CANON now, they do not look after their customers.

XA40 does in fact have an ND Filter. It's just an on/off option, not stepped.

I was told the XA45 is ok for Filming fast moving Aircraft, what they don't tell you is they say you should use a Tripod or Gimbal to get steady footage, too late as i already bought one, When filming Fast Aircraft the Camera image starts to shake using handheld, this ids really not good enough Canon.

Hi, thanks for this great piece. I have the XA15 and one big problem (almost the only one!) is that you can't use the eyepiece and the screen at the same time, which is really troublesome in very bright conditions - is it possible with the XA50? Thanks again.

It’s really sad, that they discontinued the XF400 and XF405 without any replacement.

Just got the 50 and a bit disapointed. On 4K at least image stabilization is poor and the overall colour saturation is a bit blend. Any advice?

Save your money and buy a secondhand Sony FDR-AX100 as it is a 1 inch sensor Built in ND filters and great image quality. OK focus is a little slow but a bargain these days as its now 5 years old. All this for around £700 !

The pricing of the XA50 seems too close to that of the XF400 which is a bit strange
They are priced closely, but by stepping up to the XF400, you'll get 4K 50p and a larger screen.

BMPCC 4K is $1300 with much better codecs, bitrate, in camera tools like zebra and focus peaking. So much more to say. Who would pay $7000 for a dinosaur Canon camera? Lmao
Why manufacturers release 4K all-in-one camcorders with ability to output only 1080p via SDI. I know it can record to SD cards but it seems a bit odd.
You need a 12G-SDI connection to send 4K over SDI. 12G SDI is only really seen on high end broadcast equipment. You will need 4K mixers with 12-G SDI ports, monitors with 12G SDI etc.

@@ProAVTV I know, for the fact up to 2160p30 requires bandwidth of 6G SDI for transport. AFAIK there very little mid-range priced camcorders/cameras capable outputting 4K over at least 6G SDI apart from BlackMagic Design. Every other manufacturer has this option "trimmed" by only outputting FHD over 3G-SDI and 4K over HDMI. Only the top models have 6G/12G SDI interface for native 4K output over signle cable.

@@ProAVTV GX10/XF400 is disappointing, dual pixel not working so well (3 taps to refocus on other object/face), no bokeh, way too short battery, no HLG/10bit mode, bad colors, bad sharpness, bad accuracy. Canon should have improved on the GX10 by now.

Nope. 60 at 1080; 30 at 4K.
I am interested in the canon xf400, but I have read some customer reviews of it on places such as B and H and lots of people complain the 4K image is “ soft “ and “ blurry “. What are your thoughts on sharpness of the Canon , compared to the Sony equivalent? Great work , as always. You make the whole line up very easy to understand !

The Sony does seem sharper from what I can remember, but it all comes down to taste.

I have an xf400 and it like the xa10/xa30 has a soft image. Not at all blurry. I agree with Dan that it is more of what your taste is. I love the image as I feel it is more natural than a super sharp image.
It's like all youtubers from the UK don't realise that PAL is meaningless in the era of online content - everyone is watching on 60hz displays.

Not at all, but Sony's AF performance heavily depends on the model of camera, wheras Canon's dual pixel is pretty consistent across the range. A lot of people now trust Canon for professional quality AF, and my point is that the XA40 does not have that technology.

The value of these cams will depend on the cost. If XA50 is near $1500 in US then it will be Sony AX700 killer.
All Canon 4K footage is not very sharp like Sony and Panasonic. Let's see how this works out.

4K recording is great IF your smart tv or computer monitor can display in 4K. To be honest as long as the 1080 monitors and smart TVs are still available and becoming more and more affordable why spend the $$$$ on a 4k TV/PC monitor? If you happen to be overloaded with $$$$ and have nothing else to spend it on....go for it.
