      Saad Azzahrani Because in most cases, especially if you want a cinematic look, a camcorder isn’t going to give you the results you want and a cinema camera will be way out of budget.
      Pick the right tool for what you’re trying to accomplish. None of it is right or wrong if you get the results that you want.

    Glad to see an appreciation for new “traditional” camcorders. Now retired from a career in video production, I sometimes smh at all of the pieces of equipment people have to pack onto their DSLR cameras making them heavy and awkward!!
    Obviously DSLRs with large sensors and interchangeable lenses have the advantage when shooting stills with great depth of field, but current semi-pro camcorders excel at the convenience of shooting lengthy video indoors and out (built-in neutral density filters!) and recording pro audio, be it via line level from a mixing board, XLR microphones or wireless mics.
    Thnx much for this review!!

      Ugh i know right. I start off as a kid frankensteining my dslr with audio recorder and random accessories. God it was scary. A wedding video company i work for even have one of those stupid saramonic audio splitter failed on me. I hate those things in high risk jobs.
      Im in my 30s now by the time i upgrade to my sony x70 camcorders. I know when something is wrong with the camcorders and can change input manually in the body. I dont have things dropping off from the hotshoe mount of dslr and i can plug in to audio mixer and to wall power easily.
      Coming from a kid that once frankenstein his way in the job It just feels so much more nicer easing of mind to know your tools dont have multiple weak links that will fail you.
      Frankensteining should be used only in emergencies. Not the norm.

      Same background, just not retired (yet), your post is so spot on.
      For the vast majority of any type of work, a quality camcorder like the XA50 will do nearly all anyone needs, efficiently and effectively with the least hassles.
      I’m also astounded at all the filmmaker wannabes who believe shallow DOF is everything. As if composition, lighting, telling the story with the camera, or content in story, acting, etc. weren’t as important. Study film history friends, there are a LOT of Oscar winning films with plenty of DOF in most shots, and not just the B+W classics like Citizen Kane.

But upon looking at them recently and comparing something like this XA50 to a mirrorless with cage + audio + DSLR monitor + powering all of it + choosing the right video settings... these start to become a compelling solution for people. Especially trying to recommend a video solution to someone that I KNOW doesn't have the level of interest we have in gear, they just want to film the family and occasional outings. Camcorders are definitely starting to have a place for my recommendations to people, which is so weird haha.

    Cool! Vacation near me! And I entered the world of "production" digital video with a Canon Vixia R700 (I did have an SJCAM 4000+ WiFi before that) -- not many of the "Pro" features of the XA50 -- but it also cost a lot less, yet shot great 1080p. And back in the day when my kids were young, I had a tried-and-true Sony 8mm camcorder that lasted for 12 years and had great autofocus -- and was just *easy* to use. As you say -- it's all there. You don't need a camera bag/backback/wheelie-bag with 15 pockets to carry extra lenses, monitors, rigs, gimbals -- etc. It's all there -- and you can add on better mics if needed, and a few extras. But for run-and-gun, or vacations, impromptu "pick-up" video, it is definitely much quicker to get going than a hybrid with all of the extras.... Thanks!

    For UA-cam videos the quality looks stellar. Lots of DR and detail in the image. The image looks quite a bit better than the front camera you are currently using. The front camera has a more cinematic and flat feel to it but I don't think that's beneficial for UA-cam work such as this. XA50 looks to fit the bill much better with it's realistic and highly detailed image.

I’m a hobbyist that can tolerate going up a couple extra bucks. Been using a gopro on a sabilizer to make videos of myself on a Onewheel and Boosted board. Would like to start setting up up shots on the fly (using a tripod of course), so I figured that the XF or the XA would be great for this kind of run & gun sports work. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW - I have a Canon 5DM4 with a host of nice lenses. Being able to reframe a shot and downsample to 1080 for delivery is worth the difference IMHO. 4k/60 also provides fairly decent slo-mo, if you decide you need it during editing. For me, there's nothing about the xa50 that would make me switch to it over the 400. There's really no reason to rob yourself of the extra functionality over such a minuscule price difference.

    The other advantage of a camcorder is that you sometimes put it in the hands of a newbie to get a shot, way easier to do that than give your DSLR to and say get this shot....A DSLR is fine as long as it is only in your hands.

  • @plattinummedia
    @plattinummedia 5 років тому

    For a run and gun setup, sure, this might work. I prefer DSLR setups more because as of today they are the closest thing to a cinema camera at a consumer-level price. They offer amazing tools also (zebra, histogram, log, depth of field, etc). And you will always get better audio from an audio dedicated recorder so not having XLR input on a DSLR setup isn't a dealbreaker. Another thing is video codec... On this camcorder, the codec won't be as strong meaning that color grading isn't very flexible and low light is very hard to achieve well. I think you should compare this camera with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema 4K and see which one you like better. The BMPCC4K easily dominates and excels at these features. So to conclude, if you're a run and gun videographer, sure this might be a good option. If you're a filmmaker (advanced or amateur) a DSLR might be a better choice. For stabilization, DJI Ronin S or Ronin M or glidecam paired with lens or IBIS works amazingly well. Just because one requires more effort to look good doesn't mean it isn't doable. A majority is going to hire the one that does each step well, not the one that hopes to get it right all in the camera with no post-processing required.

    I find camcorders really underrated. While the hybrid cameras are getting better for video they are primarily photo cameras that happen to take video.
    Here's the main reason DSLRs and mirrorless cameras suck for video. Time limits. You get 10-30 minutes of continuous video unless you either hack the camera or send clean video out to a separate device. Your not going to or rather shouldn't use them to record say your kids sports event, concert, or other long event. Who knows what you'll miss when you hit that hard stop. You want reliable continuous recording for possibly hours. The second is heat issues. Camcorders are designed to stay cool with many hours of use most hybrid cameras will over heat.
    One thing I find depressing is you go back to the Vixia HF R800 and you can get 1080p 24-60 FPS, better low light preformance and 32x optical zoom. Thats the equivalent of more than 1200 mm. Not a professional camera but if you don't need 4K you may be better off.
    As for the AX 50, you'll actually get similar preformance out of the Vixia HF G50 for half the price. Canon missed the boat here. You're paying twice as much for a handle and XLR inputs. Most decent XLR mics need phantom power, it doesn't look like the AX 50 provides it, nor would you want it while on battery power.

    Probably the biggest achilles' heel video camera is it sensor size. If the sensor size is small, when filming any room with very low lights you'll have a lot of noise. On the other hand if you have a crop sensor with a 1.4 lens, you'll have a better shot.

    • @martinXY
      @martinXY 3 роки тому

      You're right, of course. Everything is a tradeoff. The biggest plus for a camcorder is its versatility, meaning a good one will do many things well enough. If you have a particular use-case scenario, then a more appropriate set-up for that case should be used. Camcorders are great for events, corporate shoots, presentations, and quick one-person setups especially where you may not have as much control over the shoot as you'd like.

Of course, it is no professional camcorder with abundance of control, but it has all of the essentials (profiles, ND, mic jack, flip screen, decent internal audio, slow-motion, dynamic range, no recording limit, external power option, great AF, gyro-data for stabilization). I don't know how exactly ZV1 compares with this video camera, but I know for sure that, for example, Canon G7x markIII, where F1.8 is also much inferior to these camcorders, and in terms of sensitivity in low light. These new canons (G60, XA50, XA55) have very good lowlight. Also on the rest of the points.
      As for the ZV1, it is a competitor to younger camcorders such as the Sony ax53 and that is difficult to compare, since the stabilization is worse, overheating during long recording, there is no such focal range, the picture is generally similar + -.
