  • In this episode, we welcome Daniel Cox to the show. Daniel is the Director at the Survey Center on American Life, a research fellow in polling and public opinion, and specializes in survey research, politics, youth culture and identity, and religion. In this episode, we discuss his surprising findings in “The State of American Friendship: Change, Challenges, and Loss”, why most men struggle to find friends, why most men don’t have other men that they can depend on, why most men turn to their spouses or parents for support most often, and much more. Let’s get into it…

I think another big problem in modern society is that so many people are primarily focused on entertainment as their main pastime or outlet. So many of my old friends play video games or watch Netflix during all their spare time so when I am trying to grow out of that to push myself as a man it is harder to find other men who want to grow. I know when I went into depression because I was in a bad work environment and without any family or friend support, that is what I did too instead of getting more physically active and pushing myself in my talents/abilities which might have actually helped me get out of it faster. And because its instant gratification, it’s hard to realize what you’re doing even if you’re very self aware because you tell yourself it’s just fun to take the pressure off the day and all of a sudden 5 years have gone by without growing relationally or in any other way.

Very interesting information here. I'm having trouble finding friends myself so this foxhole series has hit home. Unrelated, you should see about interviewing Matt Smith, frontman for Theocracy. I think he'd have good insight into the CCM topic.

I’m 51, retired military and not very social with other families with children like us but we just don’t have time for many friends our age. Plus to be honest and truthful I just don’t trust people like I did in my twenties and thirties. I have had a lot of what I thought were close relationships with men friends where I considered us to be closer and I was much more loyal than the others did towards me. I’ve just been burned too much and am not willing anymore to do that. It sucks but it’s the truth.

Awesome episode! A great companion to all of the Foxhole focus!

The reason men don't have friends is because of two reasons. For the generation born after 1990, the reason is 100% because that generation is too afraid to even leave the house, much less get a job. That generation would rather spend all day playing video games, smoking marijuana, and searching social media for whatever pronouns they can call themselves today, and then complaining about how the government needs to give them money for free, INSTEAD of earning what they have.
For the generations before 1990, the reason is 100% because America expects you to waste away your entire life working away your entire life. Literally. You wake up. You spend all day at work. You come home. You go to bed. You repeat until the day you die. Welcome to America.
Both are problems which need to go away.
