The scene 4:43 with the fridge door is very clever. You're all tensed up for a conventional jump scare when she closes it but nothing happens. It makes a statement about the new kind of horror that The Ring was introducing to American audiences at the time.
The beginning is so good!! Gives you chills when the phone rings and Becky says "there really is a tape." 2018 and I still get the chills watching this movie.

What I love about this movie is that it's basically this opening 7 minutes and the next hour and a half trying to find out what the hell that was, and even after all that, they still leave a few questions left ambiguous but that in turn just makes it even more terrifying.
Seattle was the perfect setting for this film, miserable, constantly pissing down weather creating the perfect environment. Only watch this with about 20 alcohol units in my system, it is fucking scary.

How you got around the copyright rules, as well as having these unedited and uncut video parts of The Ring still be up even after 14 years is ABSOLUTELY remarkable!
Why this movie is so good and creepy, is because they build up tension! We dont see ghost Samara until the end. We imagine first and then we see.. this combine with the perfect creepy music and tension.. brilliant horror! Mush better then jumpscare
It was my birthday today and I did an escape room based off of the ring and that was PETRIFYING so I decided to watch the movie since I didn’t watch it yet 🎉
This opening is undoubtedly one of the best openings in a horror film, and is remarkable in how not violent it is. For comparison, the famous (or infamous) opening to the original Scream film features another female in which a phone call leads to their violent death. But there is one stark difference: Scream takes a bloody, home invasion-style to its introduction, while The Ring offers a quieter but very unsettling and creepy campfire story-esque taken very literally. Think about it. Though there's technically no campfire, the tape described by Becca sounds exactly like a scary story you'd tell your friends to toy with them. But what if that scary story became real? That's why the opening scene of The Ring is scarier than Scream's opening-not only do we get to (at least to an extent) empathize with Katie, but the fact that the last time we see her alive is her looking at a TV sets us more on edge for what actually happens. Compare that to Scream, where Casey is killed and we see her corpse strung from a tree - it's definitely more shocking, but it's not as scary as not knowing what to Katie. Plus, Casey's death was kind of overlooked after the opening, so we, the audience, even though her last minutes were utterly horrific, afterwards there's nothing else to her. She's dead and that's it. Katie's death is what eventually prompted Rachel to watch the tape, so it's more emotional and has more depth and weight to it. And as for Katie's death? The world was witness to one of the most alarming and shockingly effective jumpscares in movie history when we suddenly see Katie's scarred, deformed body, and her head falling down into her lap truly emphasizes the horror, and we understand later why Becca was so screwed up by her death. Another thing I noticed was how The Ring compared when considering 9/11. Hear me out. Both involve TVs and phones. During 9/11, many people both in the US and around the world watched as thousands of lives ended in a dramatic, frightening way. The tape in The Ring even has Samara's mom falling off of a cliff and ending her life like many people trapped above the plane wreckage in the towers. After 9/11, what one could call ptsd occurred in a large number of the US, leading to depression and suicide, and how the victims of Samara's tape appeared to kill themselves. Also, in terms of tone, in The Ring, its location in the rainy Pacific Northwest leads to a feeling (at least in my opinion how the film presents it) as cold and unsafe, much like how many people felt their safety and security was violated on 9/11. But whatever. I am talking for way too long. I just hope I get a like or 2 🤞
1. Rachel sit on the table cause the chair is too short. 2. The teacher kept calling her miss Keller…although she kept saying “call me Rachel", lol… 3. The way both they talked just like fire fighting…😂
This is a minor nitpick. I’ve always been bother by the fact that Katie was gonna leave that entire pitcher of lemonade out and not put it back in the fridge
SuperJackster01 I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed that, and it bugs me, too. It's like, HELLO, can we please put the lemonade back in the fridge so someone else can enjoy a cold drink later LOL!
My brother (six years younger) and I had grown up watching a lot of horror films; he told me about this film and said it was the creepiest movie he'd ever seen. That to me was a Five Star Review. I rented it, waited until later that night, turned off all the lights and started watching. Right after Katie's death, I had to pause the movie and put the lights back on. GOD, I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
I watched trailer on this movie when I was like 11 or 12 yrs old, and I was completely terrified for next week. 😂😂😂 I was11 I’m 2002 and my sister was 17 and she saw this on theaters! At home the giant TV in our basement went all static and she ran upstairs and asked my mom to turn off the TV 😂
Indeed, poor Becca! I think she was looking for the Vicodin in other room, then heard something and dashed to Katie's room, so she saw Samara carrying dead Katie to the closet. Then Samara looked at Becca, but did not kill her because she had not watched the tape, and Samara returned to the TV and Becca went mad with angst and fear.
I remember watching this in 2002 with my ex-girlfriend. When we got back to my place I pranked her when she came out of the bathroom with lights off and the tv set to the snow screen 😳🤷🏼♂️
First time I saw the 7:26 part, it forced me to curl up into a ball cause the high pitched noise along with the sudden zooming in on the girl as she deforms was absolutely horrifying to me.
Something I thought was interesting back when I had the VHS OR DVD I noticed that each time Samara makes a fright kill if you pause and go frame by frame you will see the victim's face distort horribly. Its really freaky.
justin barnett yes, if you put the speed setting on slow speed, you can see how their face changes. My ex sister-in-law mentioned that to me a few years ago.
Also when you get to the part where Rachel finds Aidan watching the tape you can see Samara begin to partially emerge from the well before it cuts to static, which was very eerie.
that’s debatable. She’s a victim in terms of NOT asking to be born with demon blood as she didn’t have a choice. But we don’t pity how she killed many ppl. Plus she was no where NEAR as dangerous before she was killed. Killing her only made her more powerful and vengeful. Plus this is the US version. In the Japanese version, Samara has more of a tortured background. US took things out. I typically like villains who don’t want to change and have to die to be defeated but Samara is not one of them. She wasn’t even allowed to be born with a good soul yet her mother Evelyn was safe? and I’d rather her outcome be different. Besides killing her didn’t work as I said before. In the 2017 Rings movie, her video goes viral on the internet. She seems undefeatable so I’d rather her change her outlook on things because how can you stop her? So agree to disagree. I want Samara to have a redemption arc. With most villains I don’t feel this way but even Magneto from X Men and Darth Vader from Star Wars have tragic backgrounds

You know what's scary about this.. its not the girl with long hair, its these pro editors that sprinkle all of these sound effects into the movie, then with just a bit of acting your good to go am i right?
I think it’s a mix of both. Sorry but the TV scene at the end of the movie was HUGE back in 2002. But it’s true the sound effects play a huge role in the suspense build up and that’s why this movie barely had any jump scares. It was all build up. Just like the Japanese version
All movies based on Asian horror are the most terrifying. The reason why they have long hair is bc in Asian culture the damned are alway female and when you're dead your hair remains alive.
