One thing I like to do is to stop by the little grocery stores in out of the way places. It gives me an insight into the local culture, because they aren't going to stock things that don't.
Texas native here (and fellow redhead) If you have the chance some of my favorite places in Texas are, Barton Springs in Austin (I recommend going to the river on the other side of the pool) and Galveston, my favorite places there are La Kings Confectionary, it’s located on the strand (it’s an old-timely candy shop that sells hand made candy, malts and shakes, coffee, and ice cream. They even have showcases of them hand pulling taffy). My favorite restaurant in Galveston/all of Texas is The Gumbo Diner. It’s a little diner that sits on the seawall where you will get the best cheese grits your ever going to have in your life! My mother doesn’t even like grits and she likes their cheese grits. Amazing pancakes and breakfast food too! Hope you get the chance to visit these places!
My friend who is from Arizona and I were just there last month! We had our picture taken in the kissing booth! It’s a cool place. They even had live music when we were there. There is a restaurant in Kerrville named Hondos. I definitely recommend it.
Hey if you come through Amarillo, make sure you see route 66(6th street), go to the 806 coffee shop, and Cadillac ranch and bring some spray paint so you can paint the Cadillacs! Also, we have tons of cool signs placed randomly around town.
Oh! You were in my area of the state! Next time if you're through here and you want to hang out overnight and Kerrville and plug in, just let me know , I would be more than happy to have you and you get a chance to have a real shower and do some laundry for free. The name that you were struggling over is pronounced Geech Cook. I believe the best that you saw of Hondo Crouch was designed by his daughter Becky Crouch Patterson. Becky is an absolutely amazing artist and author. She is no longer married to her first husband Dowell Patterson so I'm not sure what her married name is now but she's still professionally known as Becky Patterson. If you ever get a chance Google her and look for some of her books and some of her quilts that are absolute works of art. You will see them hanging around all parts of the state and I think she even has one in the state capitol in Austin. I'm glad you got to stay and see one of the concerts there. Luckenbach even had a song that made it Famous by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings back in the 70s," Let's Go to Luckenbach, Texas". I hope that while you were tootling down Highway 290 that you also stopped off at the Becker Vineyards and lavender farm which is absolutely spectacular this time of year and the Wildflower seed Farm. Back about 25 26 years ago when my husband's parents moved back to Texas from Maryland, we helped them get their backyard established and brought some wildflower seeds from that establishment. Mom inadvertently wound up growing a HUGE marijuana plant whose seeds had been mixed in with the Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrushes. Mom would not let anybody get rid of it because she said that the flowers were so pretty. Even though my husband and his parents have now passed on the story of Mom Cook's " pot" plant still gets Giggles whenever the family gets together. Safe travels along the highways and byways of my home state Casey.
I like researching names and found out Dow L. Patterson who is 78 by going by Dowell throw me into a loop and for five years of doing this kind of research it was hard to find. He is now married to a woman name Jane who is 64. Now with Becky she is 74 and lives on a the property that her 95 year old Mom Helen owns. As far as I can see she is not married after Dow
@@x35mmman maybe she had been dating somebody after she divorced Dow, then. Becky is a very devout Christian and practicing Episcopalian so I know that she would not move in and be living with a man unless she were married to him. That makes sense that she's living with her mother out on her mom's property. Becky is that type of selfless individual.
@@maryellencook9528 let me correct myself on my first comment to you. I went back and see a different picture after you comments. Becky being a devout Christian like me wouldn't live anyone and now the man Oscar Barrales who is 57 years old and 17 years younger than Becky ( I thought this could of been here Son ) but seeing I see Barrales name listed as one of Becky last names this could be her hubby. Her Mom Helen is 95 and living in Fredericks Tx on Mistletoe st. Helen Dad was Adolph Stieler and just found out that he has a street named after him for 18 years of Becky life she lived on that street. I have a number of Becky you can call if you like to talk to her.
@@x35mmman thank you very much, but that's fine. I have not seen Becky or talked with her and about 35 years I knew her back when my husband and I got married at St George Episcopal Church in San Antonio where she and Dow were parishioners along with us. Dow was a wonderful woodworker and that was something that my late husband, Gary, was interested in getting into so Dow gave him some pointers on that. I was thinking about getting into quilting and doing imitations of medieval banners and tapestries and that is one of Becky's art media and she too was helpful in giving me some hints. But again , thank you ,sir , for offering. That is very kind of you to do so. It is good to know that Becky is in Fredericksburg so if I do wish to get in contact with her I'll have a place to start.
