I owned the original version of this guitar that I bought in 1977 and gigged with it in my band while in college. I was a Tele guy and wanted a guitar that had humbuckers so I could keep pace with enough oomph to keep up with my buddies that played Les Paul’s. Was a great instrument - wish I still had it.

From Leo: Happy for you that you got a guitar you really like. I had several Fender guitars with three screw necks. Some of them I owned for 20 plus years. Never once had a single problem..

I was around at the time these were originally out. In fact in 1978 one of my guitar playing buddies in a band I knew got one. I remember being in awe of a proper Fender I had a Japanese Strat copy at the time.
Funny that they were discontinued when used humbuckers (Seth Lover designed btw guy who created the PAFs for Gibson) had a flatter board (first Fender with a 9.5" radius) seeing what happened only a few years later in the 80s. They really were for a long time disregarded though. I wish I'd bought one then lol

Yes! Thanks for this Vintage II Deluxe review! Vintera has the same reflector plate WRHB design but with AlNiCo magnets (from teardowns on YT).
Seth Lover said this about CuNiFe versus CuNiCo and AlNiCo: "I know that when I designed a humbucking pickup for Fender, I changed to cunife. They did away with the magnet on the bottom-the pole pieces were cunife magnets. Cunife is copper, nickel, and iron. There was also cunico, and I suppose the "co" there stands for cobalt. But I used cunife because you could thread that stuff, and with alnico you can't do that-you have to mold it to shape, because it's so hard. By making use of cunife magnets. They don't increase the inductance of the coil, so the inductance of the coil was lower than the other, so higher frequencies were more pronounced. And by winding on extra turns, I was able to get very good bass response with it..."

I still have my original 1976 Deluxe & a 1978 custom. The Deluxe definatly wasn't Fender's answer to a Les Paul in any sense but many of us viewed it as such at the time. It is unique in it's own right and those that expected a Fender LP were disappointed and probably dissed it because of that. I've loved mine, played it to death, really versatile and one of the best necks of any guitar I've ever owned. Had lots of Fender 3 bolt neck guitars and never had a problem with any of them, in my experience more urban myth than reality.

I love it, man! A lot of the 3 bolts from the 70s (that most of my friends were playing in the 80s) were drilled slightly wonky. Added to slightly looser neck pockets, the tightening of the screws would skew the neck to one side or the other, causing either the high or low E to fall off the side of the board towards the upper frets. I'd think that the tighter tolerances of CNC manufacturing of the neck pocket have cured that ailment but I'm not so much a Fender guy, myself, so I couldn't really tell you what their QC is like in those departments these days. You'd know better than me! 😂

American vintage is cool like the idea of it. I’m a bassist but do record a bit of guitar. I do like the deluxe tele. But tend to use a Jazzmaster more on the guitar side of things. That being said. I love American standard series a lot more from the early 2000’s from bass to guitar I find them to have a better neck profile and weight. It feels right to me. I also started playing in 2003 so that could be my reason it’s just home to me. I do own a American pro II bass and love that bass so it’s not just that the year but I do always come back to my older instruments because it’s home to me. I do have issues with pickups in those instruments versus newer instruments it’s mud city in most but a pickup change has been good to me and buying an older instrument that’s currently not vintage will save you money my last 2004 bass cost me 1300 verses a newer one costing close to 1800 if it plays right in your hands and sounds good it’s a win either way

Some of the 3- bolts necks would shift suddenly under tension of hard playing, throwing the tuning and sometimes intonation out of whack, I have heard that this was really the result of the neck pocket being too loose. I had a 74 strat that had this problem.I shimmed it and periodically forced it to shift to release tension. If I liked the way a 3 bolt plays this would not stop me from aquiring it, in fact recently got a 70's ri tele custom (mexmade.) It's a 3 bolt and I love it.

  • @voiceofexperience
    @voiceofexperience Рік тому +1

I had a G&L BASS with a 3 bolt neck-plate, and there were no stability issues at all.
I'd file these supposed problems under "Urban Myth", probably the result of Fender purists hating on ANY changes made to the design, especially by CBS. Those Cunife pups that are so fondly thought of now were dropped along with the original Deluxe & Custom Tele models.
Anyway, 3 bolt necks look COOL!

"Fun" story: just over a year ago, L&McQ had a Black Friday sale. They put up a list of what each store had on sale, where you had to go to the actual store to get it. I had my mind set on getting a tele, I was pretty much decided on a Player 3-colour sunburst, but there was a L&McQ not too far from me that had an American Pro Tele Deluxe at an affordable price (IIRC, it was about CAD1500). I really wanted SS not HH -- which to me doesn't really represent the paradigm of a tele -- but people had a lot of positive things to say (including one Landon Bailey, I believe) about the Shawbuckers in it, so I thought, screw it, I will pay up. I called them; they said it had sold immediately. I thought, crap, there goes my chance to have an American-made Fender. That evil thing happened where my mind had shifted both my expectations and price point. The MIM went out the window and I ended up stumping up for a brand new Am Pro II tele. Good guitar, but not cheap. Glad you love your AVII. Bit toppy pricewise for me.

I had a cool California "fat" tele made in '98 I loved it for years and thought it was THE bomb dropper (my only previous tele was a MIK thinline pro-tone that was indeed amazing) until I found out what telecasters were really about. Since then the single coils have become almost the only music to my ears (P90's can be pretty chimey and beautiful too) So, hummers on teles...meh. But, having grown up just south of the CA border (MN) and having fished in Ontario more times than you can say eh, I have a little bit of knowledge of the depth of the cold this canuck Landon B. lives in thirteen months of the year so- I will respect this review

You can't choose it over a Gibson Les Paul...the set neck mahogany , chunky body etc, ...noone can touch the Les Paul - that's facts!
It's literally the greatest rock guitar of all time.
It is. It's the G.O.A T. C'mon. Don't lie to yourself, you know it is.
That being said....i still want a Deluxe. It's an "aswell as" an LP, not an "instead of".
Stoked about the new cunife's tho!
If i was in a rock band for real, with albums & tours & fans...
I'd play a les Paul on the album...but id be seen with a Teke Deluxe on the cover inserts and the live shows.

There are no 3-bolts or 4-bolts. There are 1 bolt + 2 long wood screws like this one, and 4 long wood screws like all the other Fenders. I feel the actual bolt on the bottom of these 70s, that anchors into a mated threaded steel cylinder, is a much beefier connection. So at least you get 1 bolt here.

70's 3 bolt were notorious for having too much space in the pocket making it easy for the neck to move. It can actually be fixed with sticky sandpaper... But CNC should have solved all that by now ;-)

If this is supposed to be a vintage reissue, they blew it on the shape. By 1975 Telecasters all had the (in)famous “Notchless” cut, where they changed the upper bout to attach further up the neck. That shape started round ‘72, and lasted until the early ‘80s.

At the time of writing this, the guitar cost £2259 GBP. Seriously that is more expensive than my motorcycle. I think that is an amazing guitar but the price is just to much for my liking. If I was to spend that type of money I would go to the modshop and get one which I could spec out and it would be cheaper and no one would have one like it. The truss rod adjustment would look different, and it wouldn't have a three screw neck plate but I could live with it for the price difference and having something unique.

I ended up back at the shop who worked on mine because the lower volume knob was acting like a master volume. When I got there the shop owner went over the wiring diagram with me and he said the wiring diagram with me was correct and that the lower volume pot as cting like the master was correct maybe itis because they are wired in series and not parallel ? .

@@landonbailey but i tryed out of 5 this particular one seemed very nice as im not a strat guy ive had about 5/6 from deals though time & kinda enjoyed it but only lasted a week before i let it go again! I think one of the most confortable designs ever made but no backbone for me to prety sounding like a volkswagon nice & all with the flowers but too jimy hendrix/ stevie ray vauhgn no coleones! To girly for my taste! But thats just me. Even with h,s,s still doesnt shake things around especialy with fender amps & marshall. Just seems brittle even ofensive with that painfull treble. But obviously great for the artist that plays it loud. My view of the thing. On the other hand tele's with hot rails can send some serius thick, sirupy girth . Enjoy brother guess in my town gibson tipe guitars are the most popular generaly speaking. Or my circle i should say cause i cant speak for 6 million people. ✌️👌
