Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.

This band is amazing, unique, and has an incredibly diverse sound. Well worth your time to delve into. They are my favorite band that I've discovered in the past few decades - yeah I love their sound that much. Their musicianship is world class, and their songwriter is probably a musical genius. I'd recommend Daydreaming next, unless you're a metalhead in which case I'd recommend From Now On or Shambles. Pretty much everything by them is amazing tho. Have fun!

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

Rock is so alive in Japan. Band Maid, Trident, Lovebites, Nemophila, Hannabi, and East of Eden. I’m sure there are others I’m not aware of yet.
Ill have to check out west of eden. Trident im on the fence about. They're kind of my vibe energy wise and I enjoy listening to the little iv heard but briefly looking at the lyrics, not sure I could do them justice breaking down the lyrics 😅.
You should listen to X-Japan, they are legends of J-Rock, this was where Japanese rock created its own styles, the great variety of music in Japan is for all types of tastes and perhaps some that you had never imagined.

My interpretation of the lyrics is that there is a guy who is in a relationship with a woman, but he isn't fully committed.
He's playing stupid games with her emotions and she's telling him to be serious.
He's trying to get her to behave like some sort of fantasy girl (submitting to his unserious attitude), but she's free-spirited and knows what she wants.
She is telling this guy that if has any feelings for her at all, he shouldn't hide anything from her; she wants his attention and his love, but that she is growing impatient with how indecisive he is.
She is saying that she chooses to be with him, but she's not going to wait forever for HIM to make the same choice.

They had a cameo on Mary Elizabeth Winstead's movie, Kate. They played Choose Me. That song was also on Peacemaker (John Cena).
BTW, this song, along with Blooming, was featured in the Netflix action movie, Kate. The band makes a brief appearance in the club scene.
Band Maid self describes as a hard rock band, and does every shade of rock there is. Their early stuff tends to be pop/punk/hard rock. Newer stuff gets very hard and progressive. A good sample of their range is the 2 in 1 video of Manners, and Black Hole. Also they are a live band. When in doubt, choose the live versions.
I will admit I very rarely ever listen to live versions of songs but based off comments on here and other videos, Seems I need to start doing them more. I will admit, the crowd does add a certain level of intensity and energy for sure! I guess it's just from watching rock bands doing live songs. They never sounded as good live imo but Japanese bands don't seem to struggle as much from my experience there LOL.
@@TwistedGunZ I think most people tend to avoid live versions because the quality of the play or recording isn't as good. But Band Maid live performances sound as good as their studio versions, if not better. The official live videos are very well produced and sound excellent most of the time.
The ladies often add extended sections to the live versions of songs, which is why the fans push them so much.
@@evilducks3710 thats a fair assessment. I do live versions for lovebites so I could consider doing one for them also. Im not exactly sure what song I'll do next but you're more than welcome to recommend one for sure.
@@TwistedGunZThere is a feedback loop between the audience and the band. Band Maid gets energized more than usual. Also there are extra bits and interludes added to some of their live performances. That elevates the performance even more. Prime example is their latest video of HATE? Highly recommended as an example of a great rock performance.

Welcome to band maid! The hardest rocking maids on the planet.
You'll find most of their lyrics are very poetic and can be taken a lot of ways, that's because the main writer of the lyrics (Miku, rhythm guitar) tends to be very poetic. I think they shouldn't be taken literally, and are more of a vibe kind of deal? More recently Saiki has written some of the lyrics and she is far more blunt. If you want an example of that listen to their latest live video "Hate?" it's got subtitles and they're very good.
If you want to get more into them, if you have a preference of style, they have lots of options.
Harder/more metal: Shambles, Hate?, Rinne
More classic rock: Thrill, Domination, Dice
Ballad/softer: Daydreaming, wonderland, Memorable
I appreciate this post. Yeah sometimes I take the lyrics a bit literal. I just do my best at trying to put myself into the shoes of what I think the writer is trying to convey. At least my best interpretation of it anyway. They're a fun band and Ill definitely do more of them in the future. I do gravitate towards the heavier stuff so maybe "Hate" will be the next one i check out!

It's tough to do a lyrical breakdown on a song that is translated from Japanese. For instance "oborete to me" translates to "drowning (in) me", and is captioned as "become my prisoner", which is close in meaning, but not quite. Same for "oborete neh", in which Saiki is confirming that you are indeed drowning in her and that resistance is futile. :)
As if trying to break down a Japanese song as an English speaker wasn't hard enough, the added challenge of rough translations makes it a true challenge 😅. I sometimes feel im somewhat in the ballpark with my interpretation but never truly feel I have it pinned down.
Try some LIVE stuff. The older "Domination (LIVE)" is great. But consider checking out two selections from their November '23 Yokohama show. Try "Hate?" or "Don't you tell ME". These are the two most recent entries on the band's UA-cam channel.
In addition to their sheer musicality, there's just sheer joy in their performance.
I caught BAND-MAID live in Minneapolis in August last year. They are the real deal.

By the way, the name Kobato means small pigeon. po is the Japanese word for the sound of a pigeon.
She is the band's founder, rhythm guitarist, and main lyricist. In her opinion, BAND-MAID is a miracle. I think so too.

You might have picked the perfect BAND-MAID song to start with. It's one of their most accessible, and therefore, popular songs. So much so it's been used in the film 'Kate' and the TV show 'Peacekeeper'. The band themselves even make an onstage appearance in 'Kate'.
If you want the exact opposite, lyrically speaking, check out their latest release, 'HATE?' Live, on their channel. The lyrics are *brutal.*
My favorite Japanese band, and currently the band I listen to the most, period. I put them top of my list: Band Maid, One Ok Rock, Wagakki and Doll$boxx. So far you've missed their best, though, which is always LIVE. Did I mention live? Best work: Manners with Black Hole (live), Domination (live), Hate (live), Play (live), Freedom (live), and Daydreaming. They have about 100 songs, all great. The non-live material kind of misses the point of this band, though, which is indicative of all Japanese bands.

Now about the song. There are at last count I think 6 different versions of this song. The Ladies of Band-Maid have many songs that they have put together alternate versions of, for touring or special performances. Sometimes they are acoustic, sometimes semi-acoustic, sometimes they incorporate acapella elements, they recently had a piano only version of this song, during their performance at the Yokohama Arena. Taking all the alternate versions of their songs, the Ladies have almost 200 songs in their discography.
And Choose Me is a sort of "Adult Relationship" co-dependent love song. And yes the raunch is there. She is demanding he submits like she is submitting to him. It's all or nothing, either the guy is totally hers so she can be totally his, or they need to go their own ways. Mutual partnership or dissolution. It's a demand for a total commitment.

The chorus she's telling him to look at her lips, pressumably in love/lust, while she's playing him and sees her lips as lying to, mocking, him in his ardour for her.
I don’t think the situation is unusual - she wants him, but he won’t commit. So she’s saying, I’m ready to get serious, but you need to make up your mind because I won’t wait around forever.
