      very very VERY helpful! Would be nice if you explained a little more on what quality of the sound you were bringing up instead of just naming numbers, which you totally did a lot of the time. But just for more versatility on sounds, describing EQ and the "click of the kick usually around x-khz" would be helpful to me, just to get to know more about what your looking for when making these decisions!
      Followed along step by step and took notes on the whole thing, I don't think I've ever gotten a better drum sound!

    • @codywrightmusic

      Would it be bad to put the drum Tape bus inside of the overall drums bus? or would you recommend taking those two busses and sending them to their own group to have own fader for drums. Is it bad to have the drum tape bus mixing into the compression of the drum compression bus? Just curios in terms of workflow, I love how it sounds outside of the bus, but Im wondering if you can achieve the same effect but not have a drum track outside of the drum group

    I’m loving that Lauten mic man! I think it’s meatier not really with on board eq or design but I think they somehow enhanced the transients of the 180-200hz frequencies that’s why it feels so much stronger and solid yet still natural.

    I’m a drummer and engineer - both with over 15 years of professional experience, and while my tastes would have me treating my primary drum sounds differently from your tastes, I REALLY want to commend you for taking a very reasonable and practical approach to it.
    As a drummer I just don’t feel that the folks using 3 different types of mics/transducers on the kick drum and multiple mics on each tom (not to mention multiple sets of room mics) are really getting better drum recordings. I don’t think they hit as hard and I don’t think they sound any more realistic.
    That Lauten snare mic sounds monster! (Although for a $400 condenser mic I kinda feel like it ought to), so thanks for bringing us a great find!

    OH MY GOD. That snare reverb trick is GENIUS. Why have I never thought of that. I always get one shots for every drum session so I’m going back to remix my current projects. Such a good idea. Especially since I do mainly worship music which is typically massive massive snare sounds. I always end up making my own sample with verb baked in but then I can’t change it without building a new one, and trigging a verb sound always gets weird. THANK YOU

    • @nateyoung
      @nateyoung Рік тому

      Definitely a great trick. You can also sample your own snare sound from the track, just have the drummer give you a few nice isolated hits (so no bleed) and use that to trigger the reverb. Makes for an even more natural blend, if that’s what you’re going for.

    • @nateyoung

    Awesome video Colt, I learned a ton about drum mixing from this. I recently saw a video by Jordan Valeriote (Hardcore Music Studio) where he shows off his companies new plugin called "silencer" and it seemed to work absolutely transparently at eliminating bleed in any instrument. It was pretty mind blowing. May save you and any other mixers/drum editors out there a ton of time especially on toms.

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  Рік тому

      To me, there’s only cons in doing that, as it starts to sound unnatural if you completely eliminate all bleed. This has been the best thing I have figured out, so it minimizes bleed as much as possible, without starting to sound unnatural.

      So in the room, I always try to position them, so it’s the most balanced picture of the kit. After that, I don’t do any more phase alignment. But I do high, pass the rooms, so it doesn’t hurt the low end of the kick drum regardless of the phase relationship

    I love a fat snare! I think we have similar taste in that regard. Would you mind sharing what snare was used on this recording and/or your FAVORITE fat ass snare of all time? :)

    Uh. I mean I can hear the clipping. On my iPhone. We’re we just supposed to ignore it or…?

    Can we talk about how the volume automation is bypassed when he is doing the Tom rides, but we're all still like - "Oh Yea, Sounds soooo much better!". Just a bunch of placebo sheep. Sounds good, though!

      Ooof…. Huge oversight on my part, and definitely as embarrassing as adjusting the compressor in bypass… Good eye for catching it.

    for real mixes you don't need so much low end on the snare.

  • @onethousandtwonortheast8848

    You can’t squeeze blood out of a rock. If you’re not using killer mics, killer microphone preamps with Killer Mike placement, and a killer acoustical environment with a killer drummer who knows how to hit the drums correctly, you’re always going to be wondering how come your recordings don’t sound like the records do. I had a friend who was a Grammy award winning engineer, and he told me when he would receive recordings from Nashville, everything sounded right. There was no need to EQ the piano tracks, or any other track for that matter. People in Nashville know what the F they’re doing And they’re not using 20 million microphones on the piano either. Sometimes it was just two mics and it sounded right. I mean David Foster, right. This was 20 years ago. Now everything is sample based mixed in with real microphone recordings because nobody wants to spend the time or probably doesn’t know how to get the right sounds.

    Why are you using plugins when obviously you own a 30k Fairchild compressor?

      Are these plugins actually better for drums than the Fairchild or did you choose them for illustration purposes?

    Why you're using the proq3, you said Kirchhoff is much better. What's wrong? Too me, that doesn't feel alright. So, I stop following.

    As someone who loves a fat snare sound…. I honestly can’t get over the Tom tones in this. 🤌 great tuning, mics have great rejection. Snare still sounds great, but I honestly think the Tom’s shine even more before you even touched them up, then they keep getting better with OH and rooms. Just shows source over ‘toys’ wins every time (rejection still helps a ton!) 🤣 even with a little youtube compression. great job.
