I Catch Killers: Meni Caroutas Part 1 - From Kings Cross cop to the hunt for missing persons King's Cross in the '80s for a young cop was like Mardi Gras, the circus and New Year's Eve all rolled into one. Whatever you wanted, you could get it. For former detective Meni Caroutas, working the glitter strip was his dream job - until everything suddenly came crashing down. Meni joins Gary to chat about the moment his career ended, and how it led him to his lifelong mission of finding missing persons. #podcast #police #missing ► Connect With True Crime Australia Online: bit.ly/46xCXDb ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► Subscribe To Our True Crime Australia UA-cam Channel: bit.ly/3iU23Fm ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► Follow Us on Facebook: facebook.com/TrueCrimeAustralia ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #truecrime #truecrimeaustralia #crime #crimestory #crimejunkie 00:00 - Opener 00:41 - Introduction 01:26 - Where passion for missing persons comes from 04:58 - Stories of emotional families 10:58 - Working in police and Kings Cross in the 80s 18:10 - Avoiding corruption 20:33 - A funny story and using laughter to cope 24:27 - Violence back in the day 29:50 - More police yarns 34:10 - A tragic, but regular, overdose case 39:19 - Becoming a detective 42:21 - Being careful about dodgy colleagues 46:59 - Getting arrested, facing rubbish charges, and a committal hearing 59:09 - Leaving the police and getting into television
Thank you Gary, they should put your face on Money!! I think the way you were treated was an absolute disgrace, bless you for all you have done to help over many years!
Meni Caroutas mentions a police officer by the name of Bruce Shepherd. He was a well-known plane spotter at Sydney Airport. Bruce has since passed away, but there is a memorial for him at Sydney Airport called _Shep's Mound,_ which is a popular aircraft spotting location below the air traffic control tower.
Daniel Morcombe's abductor and killer, Brett Peter Cowan, was eventually found and imprisoned. Morcombe's remains, such as bones and items of his clothing, were found in the Glass House Mountains of Southeast Queensland. There is a Wikipedia page on the crime, and a film based on the case, _The Stranger,_ was released starring Joel Edgerton, despite the protestations of Morcombe's parents. Morcombe's death was said to have come about by strangulation.
"This act was apt to turn the investigation into the disappearance of a child into a gladiatorial circus which apparently elevated Jubelin to heroic status with corresponding demonisation of Mr Spedding," it read.

Love the cop’s stories more than the crim’s stories. I can’t comprehend what it would be like to be a cop in the cross in the 89s & 90s, wild!

People make films without regard to family or victims as long as they get cashed up and known for knowledge that doesn’t beling to them

The guest is a jack-in-the-box. Up, down, pull the shirt. Rinse and repeat. Very hard to watch the intense fidgeting.
