- Laughing gas abuse contributed to the death of 24-year-old Ellen Mercer, a coroner has concluded.
The student, who inhaled two to three "big bottles" of laughing gas each day, died from a pulmonary embolism on February 10.
Her brother tells ITV News that her death was the result of "a long struggle with mental health", adding that mental health workers had stopped following up with her.

Abuse of laughing gas has been a problem for years
Of course its the object's fault, not the person's fault. Typical nanny state mindset.
Amen.
Object?
Did you actually watch the video? The family themselves feel that deep-seated mental health issues were the cause of this woman's death, and that the substance abuse was only a symptom of broader problems.
Drug and alcohol addiction from tobacco to crack is a horrible blight that kills thousands in the UK...

i wondered what those little silver cannister bottles were, i use to see them scattered in the road from time to time thinking what the Hell are those things.
Me too
I see them a lot around Manchester. I also see bigger ones called Cream Deluxe a lot which I assume are used to the same end. They're usually on pavements or in parks. I dread to think what goes on in my local park at night judging from the other things I've spotted that I won't mention here! 😬

Switch laughing gas with vodka in the headline. Overuse substances and they will kill you, alcohol abuse killed 20 people a day in the UK last year, 200 a day from smoking.
But that's not sexy.

Her family bleating about lack of care.. THEY are the first line of care.
Just shifting the blame, they didn't raise their child properly and now it's everyone else's fault.
They are but there not mental health professionals. There is only so much you can do without professional help. The NHS mental health services not following up certainly didn’t help. The Nitrous Oxide abuse would of greatly exasperated the Bipolar diagnoses especially with regards to psychosis.
What makes you think it’s anyone else’s fault? Who said they didn’t raise her right?
You wouldn't expect the family if a cancer victim to care for them alone. Mental health care us just as vital but overlooked.
Who are you lot to make such accusations?.
How many students died from alcohol in the same year? Any death is tragic and I’m very sorry for this young woman’s family and friends, but this is only news because it’s uncommon. There are literally hundreds of equally bright and loved youngsters who die from alcohol every year. Yet those hundreds of deaths aren’t changing government policy. The real problems are never covered like this because they happen every day to thousand of people and so aren’t considered newsworthy
Can’t be that bright. Everyone knows the dangers of binge drinking and mixing your drinks. Some people need to learn the hard way.
@@RevealedFilms If you believe that then You will be very surprised to hear that not as many people know or understand that alcohol is a drug. Infact more people die annually from alcohol related illness than any other drug known to man!
I am a trained Substance misuse key worker, at one point in my career a team of us did out reach in our local town centre pubs and night clubs during peak evening hours on weekends. Our goal was to educate and assess patrons of all ages regarding alcohol units, how many units are In each drink. The affects both mentally and physically on the body both short and long term etc Many of those people believed that they drank socially with very little risk to themselves and others. Many of the same people thought nothing of drinking a bottle of wine in the evenings whilst at home. Almost 40% thought alcoholism is something that only happens to so called drunks on the street or "the man in the pub" that drinks all day every day. Alcohol dependency affects people from all age groups, back grounds and ethnicities. Mostly caused by a lack of education and the fact that it's socially acceptable and not seen as a drug because it is taxed by the government.
It is very similar to helium from balloons, it is extremely dangerous to inhale yet because it is very funny to witness and partake people don't realise the risk. My heart aches for this girls family, such a waste of a beautiful life.
This is absolutely insane, Blessed Be.
Not a very empathetic bunch of commenters here. Thank god some people care enough, it could happen to someone you know and care about, then you will be grateful for others kindness.

Anything can be addictive but most of the time its is caused by poor mental health. I have tried some substances before but never got hooked, main reason is I do have some mental health support from friends and loved ones. Someone who is involved and engaged in the community would not depend on drugs or any addicting behaviour is we have social and mental support.
They didnt show a big bottle once throughout this clip, it would be easy to have shown a big one, they are huge!! Makes you think why. And ahe was having three. One of them little ones just does 1 balloon.

Where i am in Cambridge there were piles of nitrous oxide cannisters all over the streets, and extremally dangerous driving around the area too, they were racing cars in the street, crashing into bus stops, etc, all high on nitrous oxide. It's been safer here since the ban, so i'm really glad it was banned. So many people were using the stuff, so many young people, and obviously they weren't being responsible with it. When it comes to nitrous oxide it isn't a case of 'some people can't moderate their behaviour', for nitrous it's most people on it couldn't and wouldn't.
How could one person been so silly for overdose of Nitrogen...
She's dead now you clown. Show respect
I often see the big bottles strewn about my local park and woodland. I found 10 of them a couple of weeks back.
So... She literally died of laughter!?
We need to teach our children from a younger age how to enjoy life without the use of substances. Teaching them life skills, coping mechanisms. To be able to positively use free time, with friends or alone. And stop using pseudo sciences, that is causing many young teens to get really messed up and confused about their identity 😐
So what we can learn from this is that substance abuse, or the excessive consumption of a substance can kill you. Just like water.

How many deaths a year from laughing gas?

Why would anyone do that ?? Laughing gas of all things .

She died from a blood clot which was from falling over and hitting her head. While it was a catalyst, it wasn't the laughing gas that killed her.
Nursing home 2 years stresses anyone. We used to inhale the gas and take a hit from a blunt. Crazy stupid things we did. I praise God I'm alive. Blessings and peace to her parents.♡♡♡
Nitrous oxide is not illegal to possess unless one does not have a legitimate use for it. I use it to add performance to race engines and wouldn't dream of inhaling it. In medical usage it is mixed with oxygen. While this unfortunate young woman obviously had other comorbidities which contributed to her death I'm getting a little tired of living in a country which adopts knee jerk legislation to deal with issues created by lack of care and investment in mental health for one.
Couldn't agree more.
Having no idea what was going on in her personal life its not right to comment on her poor choices which ultimately led to her passing

What is often not appreciated is that nitrous oxide effectively makes any vitamin B12 ineffective. Thus those exposed to it can readily end up with the symptoms of B12 deficiency. This is well documented with respect to its use as an anaesthetic. Even a few puffs of "gas and air" (Entonox) reduce B12.
Remember, vitamins are called "vitamins" because they are vital.
Oh no......anyway.
Anouther sad story. 😢
Heart goes out to the family...this now should be a thing the government needs to step in and ban....or make it a class a drug......see hundreds in car parks of these canisters.....doing it while operating a vehicle.....this is just the start of it
When i was in school a girl who lived near me killed herself by taking ODing on antidepressants prescribed by the GP. The mom tried to blame the GP/NHS for prescribing them to her without her (the moms) knowledge rather than the guy in his 20s who was grooming her and basically did nothing when she (the daughter) told him what she had done
It shouldn’t be banned because one person abused it till her death. Tragic and my condolences to her family but a blanket ban is not the way forward.
That's heart breaking, poor girl was let down badly by health workers! What a tragic waste of life! So beautiful too! 💔

Mental illness isn't just about getting professional help, though. There's a lot we can do if you know what we can do. Dr Chris Palmer wrote a book called Brain Energy about how much diet affects even the most extreme cases of mental illness. We need to get this info out there so people know what's available, and stop waiting around for someone else to help. I hope people go read the book - it's incredible! And it's really empowering.

Anything can kill you if you take it in large enough quantities, even water. In the case of N2O, or Nitrous, too much can cause demylenation of neurons, which is why she couldn't walk. There are many things that can and do cause demylenation, such as pesticides and MST, commonly found a flavouring in many Asian dishes and probably more extensively in ultra processed food. Life is about mitigating risk and it helps to have some knowledge of what needs mitigating, but the trouble is, humanity lives largely in ignorance.

Still, alcohol does far more harm to people that N2O, and causes much more litter too; litter being cited as one reason for the N2O ban. N2O canisters don't smash into 100s of sharp pieces at my local kiddie's play ground; beer, wine and spirits bottles do though.
