    This method, "Squish to condish" has been a game changer with my 2B/C hair! I've never had it be so curly, soft, and moisturized! I also squish in my styling products too! So glad I found this channel as we have very similar hair structure! Thank you! 👍

      I'd also like to add my thanks. I had given up on the curly girl method. I have super fine 2b hair, and nothing I tried was really working. I figured I would have to learn to "embrace the frizz"! Then I tried the s2c with each product, like you showed us in your videos, and I am so happy today with my glossy, defined waves. What a difference. Thank you so much!

  • @ashleyswc

    Thank you! I learned a lot from your video, but I haven't found anyone talking about how they get from the wet/"seaweed hair" to the ready to air dry or diffuse stage. When I scrunch with a microfiber towel, I add frizz; when I flip my head back, I lose the definition. If I tried to air dry from that wet, it would take 3-5 business days, lol... I'm definitely missing a step. Help??

    So glad to find your channel! I have 2b hair (or maybe 2b/c now that I tried squish and condish!). I’ve been finding watching a lot of videos from women who are 3c/4a, and while some of their product recommendations have been working out ok, I’m glad to find that there are UA-camrs out there with similar hair! I’ve also watched one particular young blonde 2c, but she uses a lot of silicones.

    So just to clarify, no pun intended, you squish the conditioner in your hair and it doesn’t get rinsed out? You layer your products over the conditioner? I have super baby fine, low density, high porosity hair. Gets easily weighed down.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  3 роки тому

      No, I always rinse out my conditioner almost completely. For your baby fine, lower density hair, definitely rinse it all out. Higher porosity hair needs light layers of product to retain moisture, so I really recommend a leave-in conditioner (love Innersense Sweet Spirit, As I Am leave-in, Kevin Murphy Angel Rinse, or Paul Mitchell Scalp Care Anti-Thinning conditioner), layered with a foam, and then a light gel on top. Be sure to include water and leave-in in your refresh!

    S2C is where its at. I recently went to a curl-specialized hair salon and they taught me a different method that seemed like a lot of squeezed raking - the concept I think being to help the curl 'families' clump together. S2C only came into effect at the very last stage with gel. Well, I've tried every way to Sunday to make that method work, but I kept getting weak curls if any. I am finally concluding that I'm not doing the method wrong, the method just doesn't work for me. Loved this video with the additions of loosening the hair at the back and using the comb to get clumps to form. Trying it next wash day.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому

      Interesting! Sounds like that might be a good technique for someone with type 3+ hair, but for me, would equate to weak waves as well. Scrunching up to encourage wave is all I've found that works for me (so far). Keep me posted of your results with these modifications. Hope it works better for you.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  5 років тому +4

      I feel your pain. Yes, you can either use a tshirt or tshirt-type towel. My favorites are Hair RePear (I have a discount code in most of my description box videos) and Original Moxie's Versatowel. The latter of which is super absorbent.

    Hi. I’m super new to the CG method. On a whim I found videos on UA-cam (or rather, it found me ;). I attempted my first squish to condish today! Thank you sooo much for the plethora of advice! I initially thought I had somewhat wavy hair, then lo and behold I got a beautiful surprise - a wavy/curly mane; yay for discovery! Can’t wait to invest in a hair dryer and diffuser to see how my hair will react. #experimenting 😄

    Hello, I'm very sorry if you answered this before, but was the first conditioner you put in leave-in or not? Because I noticed that you only rinced it off very quickly, so is this just how much you should rinse normal conditioner off? Was it leave-in conditioner? Did you rinse it off off camera? I just recently realized very recently that I have wavy/curly hair so I'm trying to learn the most I can 😅

    • @kierasaurusfrost
      @kierasaurusfrost 5 років тому +5

      I’m confused too because Manes by Mell and a few other curly/wavy channels have said that leaving a regular conditioner in your hair can be bad and offset the ph of your hair. It’s more acidic than an actual leave-in conditioner and I find that leaving a rinse out conditioner in my hair makes it feel more dry than rinsing it all out. Idk tho

    • @mollyg3620
      @mollyg3620 4 роки тому

      I realize this video and comment is old but would also like clarification on this. I thought leaving in a regular “non leave in” conditioner wasn’t good. Especially if you’re going to the trouble to add a leave in anyways.

  • @michellestratford9753

      I rinse out most of my conditioner, and then add a dot of conditioner back in to leave in. Probably a step I don't need to do, but it works for me. So I do it. :)

I've really lost a lot of my confidence as a result and would love to get my curly / wavy hair back! What would your top product recommendations be for conditioner and styling if I don't have a ton of $ to spend on products? My hair type is very similar to yours, just thinner.

    I LOVE S2C. Only been wavy for a short while now but it seriously helps to make the waves actually...wave and 'set' before I plop.
    Shampoo and condit, and then I S2C my leave-in into my hair, using a tiny bit of a water to just break the product up a bit and make it not to heavy on the hair.

    • @alysonlupo

    • @loisdeborah

      squish to condish is to add more definition and hydration for your hair, not to add volume, so yes, definitely do it :)

  • @MarcP5267
    @MarcP5267 6 років тому

    How many times a week do you do this routine? I S2C but I don’t use nearly a lot of products. The reason I S2C is because it squeezes the condish in and hydrates better. I don’t do it to enhance my waves. I only use a cleanser, condish and a gel. I do S2C the condish and when my hair is still soppy wet I squish in the gel.

    I'm so confused. I'm trying so hard to understand what squish to condish means, but no one actually explains how to do it or why or what the end result is supposed to be. Like, you never washed the conditioner out of your hair, right? You put the conditioner in and squished it up. Where did it go? Isn't it really bad to leave all the conditioner in? I wish there was a clear explanation somewhere on the internet about what this is supposed to look like.

    Great tips! I see you with the extra little editing details! 👍 So, i always wash my hair like this...upside down out of the shower. I noticed you leave your conditioner in for 5 mins. I just rinse it out right away (not sure if that’s a bad idead). I just don’t know what to do for 5 mins if I’m not taking a shower and I’ve already brushed my teeth before hand lol 😆. What do you do in those 5 mins? I know this is such a strange question. 😂😂

  • @tinti1486
    @tinti1486 6 років тому +1

    Thanks for this! How much regular conditioner do you leave in your hair? I wanna try to squish to condish for my next wash but I'm a little scared. Usually when I leave conditioner in my hair or don't rinse well enough my hair gets greasy.

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому

      I don't leave in too much, and I was surprised when I started CG that I could get away with leaving in any at all! I just do a quick root rinse and let the water travel down my ends while I squish. Try it! If your hair ends up greasy, you'll know that was too much for you. Different conditioners work better for it as well. You'll need to do a more thorough rinse for a thicker/more emollient conditioner; a thinner conditioner you'll be able to get away with leaving in more.

    • @tinti1486
      @tinti1486 6 років тому +1

      I figured it out, I used a thick conditioner, rinst most, if not all out and then used a thinner conditioner that I use as a leave in and mini-rinsed. It worked like magic!

    Question
    1: Do you have to wash it out or do u leave it in?
    2: do you squish until it’s not dripping with water?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому

      There are LOTS of ways to do this! Some just add water until they've squished out most of the conditioner; I choose to do a big rinse and squish mostly water and just a little conditioner in my hair. I leave it dripping because I want my hair pretty wet when I apply styling products. Once I've applied my final styling product, I squish and scrunch until it's no longer dripping.

    I see you rinse very little your conditioner (and you used a little amount yet!), and only after rinsing comb your hair, is it right? (I'm looking the errors in my routine....)

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  5 років тому +3

      Depends on the season. If it's dry/cold outside, I rinse very little. If it's humid/summer outside, I rinse out more. No errors in your routine; just learning opportunities.

    Dear what is the difference between hidration and moisturizing?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому +1

      MsVelandra I think of hydration as happening because of the presence of water, from the inside out (ie you’re well hydrated if you drink a lot of water); moisturization happens on the outside, caused by conditioning ingredients that help us/our hair stay hydrated (ie just like lotion moisturizes your face and hands). Does that make sense?

    Hi! Great video, as always! :D Unfortunately, I just don't know what to do anymore :( I have mostly 2A hair (though around my face it's more 2B) and the back sections and the underneath layer are almost straight! I've tried quite a lot of the methods you've talked about, however, I'm unable to purchase the majority of the products you review, as I live in Europe... My cut is a blunt cut with some shorter layers in the front. A lot of the products weigh down my hair and that upsets me very much, because it seems that all the effort was for nothing! Also, some routines seem to work for a brief while and then my hair gets used to them and they stop working! Do you have any advice you could give me? Sorry for the super long comment, love your videos! :)

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому

      No need to apologize. I'm glad to help. And I've been there! Generally products stop working for a couple reasons: 1. The product has too much protein or conditioning ingredients for you to use long-term, so may be better to rotate with either a protein-free, or less moisturizing line; 2. You are dealing with hard water/water high in mineral content that builds up on your hair, so those mineral deposits on your hair are preventing your products from working like they should. In either case, clarifying with a sulfate shampoo will help a lot, but must be followed up by a deep conditioner. It could also have to do with your hair cut, if it's too layered/razored/thinned. Most of my tips really help encourage wave. That's a lot harder to do with 2a hair. But some of my tips, like squish to condish for example, have more to do with hydrating hair, which is essential for creating healthy hair, and which will encourage waves of any kind. :) For 2a hair, hard hold gels might not work for you. Have you tried any lighter hold gels like Bounce Curl or Deva light defining gel? Or Boucleme gel? Where are you in Europe?

      real life+curly girl Hi, thank you for the reply! I will definitely make sure to look more into the protein and conditioning ingredients present in my products, that is probably the issue! I live in Portugal, where I feel we have a lack of products targetting wavy hair (that are not as heavy as some of those for curly hair)... But I guess I just have to work with what I have available! Have a nice day :)

    Hopefully this method works with my hair. I think I have 2c/3a hair... and my ends have not been curling. They look really bad no matter how much leave-in and product I put on my hair. I've been following the curly girl method for almost 2 years now and my curls just aren't wanting to hold curl at the ends for the past 6 months or so...

      For some, upside down styling does not work. You might try doing a deep lean from side to side to apply your product and diffuse instead of going completely upside down. That tends to work better with many of my clients.

    My hair is a 2B and I deep condition before every shower (every 2 days) is that bad? Also my hair is not so damaged it has gotten back to healthy very quickly but the waves are easy to loosen. If I accidentally touched a piece of wave it wouldn't be as tight as before, any tips for this?

    • @TheAmazingCheese1
      @TheAmazingCheese1 6 років тому +1

      Maybe look into protein treatments, my hair used to be overmoisturised and I had what I think you're describing, my waves wouldn't clump together as well and they wouldn't be as wavy, but the way to counteract overmoisturising is using a protein treatment. Just be careful, some people's hair doesn't react well to a lot of protein, so look into that and if you do protein treatments and your hair starts getting too dry, then that's a sign of protein overload (the opposite problem to overmoisturising). I hope this helps!

    • @melindab
      @melindab 6 років тому +2

      I wouldn’t deep condition that frequently if your hair doesn’t need it. Wavy hair tends to not be as dry. Your curls being stretched out most likely means you need protein and are over moisturized. Weighed down soft Hair means you need protein and crunchy dry brittle hair means you need moisture

    You have given my hair LYFE!!!! Thank you for doing what you do!! I bought the Dippity Do girls with curls curl defining cream today at Tj Maxx and I noticed that the packaging on my bottle was slightly different. Instead of a teal color block with the words "Curl defining cream," mine is magenta. Additionally, amodimethicone is not listed as an ingredient, instead this particular bottle includes PEG/PPG-25/25 Dimethicone? Do you know if the company has changed the formula or perhaps I have a really old product?

    Hi! I’m new to CGM and I’ve been trying no poo as well- I am looking to use as few store bought products as possible since I live abroad and they aren’t available here... any good conditioners I could get from my kitchen? My hair is 2b right now and I’m only 2 weeks into my transition but my hair is frizzy and dry and gets SO tangled in the shower I can’t even run the wide tooth through it- the Boar Bristle brush is the only thing that gets through gentle enough when wet anymore but when I used to use conditioner I would do something very similar to squish and condish.... help!

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому

      I want you to stop cowashing. Don't do that until you've been following CG for a while. Your hair is dry likely bc of buildup. Clarify with a sulfate shampoo, deep condition for a half hour, then wash it all out and style as usual. Do that monthly. Use a sulfate free shampoo for your other wash days. Bounce Curl, Devacurl and Innersense are my favorites.

    Thank you for this video - very new to letting my hair do its wavy/curly thing and I'm basically clueless. I followed this and left the shower with gorgeous wavy clumps ready to dry.
    I have a question, though - how on earth do you finish with such a tidy parting/roots? The shape of my head gives me this weird crown parting, basically just a huge gap/rosette top left of my head, and I have to comb and blow dry it to hide it. More generally, I can't get my waves to part or sit right without combing, which of course ruins the waves. Do you have any tips?

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому +2

      It's soooo good, especially if your hair is colored/highlighted/has any heat damage. It will stick for a few washes with a low poo, but it doesn't build up on itself. It provides selective conditioning to damaged areas via electrostatic attraction. • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому

      Gunky roots can be caused by a couple things, but both are likely related to buildup. Either buildup from not clarifying enough, or buildup from just too much conditioner and/or styling product on your roots. When was the last time you clarified? How long have you followed CG? And what are you shampooing with?

      I am VERY new to the CG method! As a wavy, I didn't really think the CG method was for me, since my hair wasn't "curly". I was so happy to find your videos and went on a binge-watch!
      I hadn't heard of clarifying until I started doing some research recently and I'm still not quite sure how to go about it!
      I was using this sulfate free Giovanni shampoo: www.target.com/p/giovanni-2chic-174-blackberry-coconut-milk-ultra-repair-shampoo-8-5oz/-/A-16602230, but I am open to trying anything! I also have a problem with my waves losing definition and my hair falling flat a couple of hours after diffusing...is this related to heat damage or needing to clarify? Thank you for helping a newbie like me!!

    • @alysonlupo
      @alysonlupo  6 років тому +2

      Hi, Olivia. I'm a big fan of using sulfates every 3 weeks to clarify. My favorite is Suave Daily Clarifying. IMO, sulfate free shampoos aren't really going to do the job in removing some of those ingredients that are essentially bonded to your hair. In terms of your waves losing definition, that's pretty normal for a wavy. I always make sure I cap off my styling products with a good gel with ingredients like PVP or VP/copolymer to lend the most hold. In very humid or very dry climates, it's important for your gel to be glycerin free, as that will dry out your hair. My favorite gel that fits the bill is Kenra 17. You can find it easily at Ulta or Beauty Brands, or my Amazon shop: www.amazon.com/shop/reallifecurlygirl. Hope that helps!
