With a foot of rain falling the week prior the 2024 whitebass run has begun.. JMoe, Ray and I found a few nice fresh whitebass invading Nails Creek in the Somerville State Park.. Cool cloudy weather early in the day didn't deter fish or fishermen but the trip ended breezy, bright and sunny.. Somebody up there loves us!
Great video, very surprising this early. Thx for taking us along.
hope y'all get out soon.. this is going to be great!
Too much fun. Gotta remember who controls all them fishies and he has a reason for them spawning early and for the way things are turning out. Thanks for the adventure and information. Wish I lived closer to you… until the next one, tight lines and God bless.
Very true!
Great news bud, thank you for posting
The Lake Somerville whitebass run in the Yegua and Nails creek is a much needed boost for the State Park. It really makes their year!
Great video!!!
Thank you!!
Planning on heading out there tomorrow from Houston.
How did you do? Catch anything? Inquiring minds want to know! ;)
Caught three only. It was slow. Will be back soon thanks for the informative videos and hope to see you out there one day
Badass catch guys
Thanks.. and this is just the start of the run!
@@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure where do I buy El lure
@@calitosanto4343 Walmart has a good selection of crappie jigs...
Last year I did amazing on the Sabine river up north of you in Jan, I'm starting to think that's because lake fork released all that water?? Not seeing much this year.
We fished the Sabine two years ago.. biggest whitebass anywhere in the whole state... Makes me wish it wasn't so far from home..
@@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure I was mistaken it was 2 yrs ago in Jan also I've never seen white bass so big, I fished the same hole twice this month and got skunked.
Awesome news plan on hitting it this Saturday I know it's going to rain but shouldn't stop any biting. Did u go upstream or down if I may ask? That'll be my first time at nails
There is a giant log jam just downstream of the bridge on CR125. I suspect that logjam is slowing the movement of the fish so I didn't go upstream of the bridge into the WMA (hunter orange required) but worked the downstream side in the State Park.
@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure thank you hopefully I can get into em Saturday watching you video makes me want to jig woth the fly rod hahaha craziest thing
Head towards lake in simple terms?
@@boboodman2556 Yes downstream from the bridge.
What weight rod are using? I have 5wt orvis rod and want to try fishing for white bass.
9ft 5 weight over-lined with 7 weight WF floating line ($70 cheap kit rod from Plusinno www.amazon.com/PLUSINNO-Lightweight-Ultra-Portable-Graphite-Complete/dp/B07VF3DX8S?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 ).. .. your Orvis 5 weight will be perfect for this type of fishing..
Thank you for the video. So your first stop was Nails Creek at 125 bridge? I could not see exactly.
Is Irvin bridge a good spot now or is the water still too high?
Yes, Nails creek @CR125.. and yes the Yegua is running too high and mighty but should be fishable by next weekend.
I was wondering if you were referring to Bedias creek on the Trinity side? For that one you need a kayak, right?
Bedias is correct and a pain to access @ FM247..
What test line are you using? Lure? Thank you
6# tippet.. and throwing mostly 1/32oz white crappie jigs.
Is the run still going?
nope.. ended about a month ago..
What did cedar creek look like? catch any fish?
Cedar is just getting started..
Is this near newmans bottom?
Yes.. Nails creek is on CR125 back towards the State park Nails unit on FM180.
Sir where is the location
This part or Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-somerville
Is nails creek close to Yegua ?
Yes.. Nails creek is near the Nails Creek Unit of Lake Somerville State park.
@@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure nice to know I always fish yegua never been to Nails , where’s the best access point to fish nails for the run if you don’t mind me asking
@@Karen-yk8ez the bridge on CR125, just a little further down the road from where the access is to Newmans bottom on the Yegua. It's closer to the Nails creek unit of the lake Somerville State Park.
@@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure Thanks a lot Sir , Is there a pay booth at the bridge like there is at newmans or is it online ?
You don't keep them?
Only when the freezer is empty.. and it's never empty these days.. Wife doesn't like fish.. Which begs the question "why did she marry me" ?
@@FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure lol thanks for the reply
Did pretty good my self at nails
There are whitebass in most of the bigger creeks feeding lake Somerville
Birch, Cedar, Nails and the Yegua.. but the Yegua is the best and biggest producer with the best access and it's in the State Park so you do not need a fishing license if you are fishing on the park grounds. If you are thinking about fishing from a boat then you will need a license.
