Google Home Max vs TWO Nest Audio in Stereo sound comparison

  • Previously I've made a somewhat ridiculous sound comparison between the big Google Home Max and one Nest Audio. While the smaller nest audio obviously can't keep up with the Home Max, at lower volume it's a pretty capable little bluetooth speaker. Well in this video I take it up a notch, adding two Nest Audio speakers in stereo mode compared to the Home Max. While the results are much better than the previous sound comparison, the Home Max still has a clear edge when it comes to low frequency extension but also, surprisingly, overall clarity. Recorded with a Tascam audio field recorder for a better sound quality. For the best results please use headphones. Test tracks from the UA-cam Audio Library.

I have my Max on the floor as a subwoofer for my Nest Audio stereo pair. Really adds bass to the Nests. Bought all three used for $175. Can’t beat that.

I was really hoping the Nest Audio would be comparable, at least with 2 of them. I bought the Home Max at full price when it was released. Recently I discovered it isn't even being sold anymore. I fear for the day it stops working. The only reason I was looking was because my wife lost the white magnetic pad it sits on and was looking for a replacement pad. Sad times

I actually prefer the sound and use the Nest Audio instead. While the Home Max does have a much bigger sound, I find the Nest smoother sounding and sufficient for my small, echoey room. The Max is probably a better choice if you want louder and more powerful sound overall and have a larger room I guess. I'm actually worried Google will stop supporting them in a few years. This is to be expected in the smartphone industry but not when it comes to speakers. There are 50 year old "dumb" speakers that still sound fantastic today, too bad the small Nest is going to be e-waste. At least the Max has an AUX input. Thanks for watching!

@Headphone Mechanic honestly the small nest is the star of our house. It's perfectly suited for small rooms such as bathrooms or our son's bedroom. I guess we all love shower music in this house. It was probably the cheap cost that led us to purchase so many of them.

Thanks for creating this comparison! Now the only question is where to get a Google Home Max. :)

You're welcome! I'm surprised this speaker still has some interest since it's quite old and indeed, hard to find, at least new.

Can you use the nest audios in stero and have the home max handle the bass?

I'm pretty sure it's possible to have all three play at the same time, probably even with the Nests in stereo, but the Max would still play full range. So I don't think you can have the Max just to play low frequencies (like a subwoofer).

The sound difference is night and day?! The Google Home Max Speakers are better than I anticipated? Why does Google not continue selling the Home Max anymore? I've been flirting with the idea of buying a Max speaker second hand for a while but they're still quite expensive. You may have tempted me to take the plunge and purchase one... 😬

Definitely worth it if you can find a good deal in great condition. I actually paid $250 for mine new, which might be a bit expensive, but I knew I probably won't get another chance later and really wanted one after owning the Nest Audio for a year and absolutely loving it. The Nest Audio is fantastic if you only need background to medium level sound, it's really punchy and balanced but higher than 40% it starts losing bass. The Home Max is even more impressive - as it should. Bass reaches really deep and if you boost it in the app as well it's like you have a subwoofer in the room. I like that it's stereo, has an AUX input which the Nest doesn't, so hopefully when Google eventually won't support it anymore, the speaker will still be usable. Just a heads up, in this recording the two Nest Audio speakers sound a bit more muffled than what I was hearing in reality, possibly because of the mic placement, so keep that in mind. Both the Nest and Max are great, the Max is just a few times better and louder.
