  • Visit The "Magic Bus" from Into The Wild with us as it sat on June 22, 2011.
We did a quick walk through of the bus where Chris McCandless lived in the summer of 1992 before we walked back out of the wild.

This story brings tears to my eyes. You did well paying your respect. I hope to one day visit Fairbanks, Alaska...just to leave a message for Chris' spirit.
Sometimes I wonder if he greets visitors..and also wonder if his parents could feel his presence when they visited the bus. I hope he said "I will see you guys soon, don't worry".

agreed. Ive got a very full bucket list of things I never thought I could do. One of them was to visit this bus, not a lot of people can claim they went there! Just ran the Chicago Marathon... hiked across the grand canyon. etc etc. Compose a great life and have no finish lines. No one is going out and living in the bus its just a great destination hike to connect with Chris and his idea to shed weakness and go for a great adventure.

  • @jakeacton72
    @jakeacton72  12 років тому +4

@DucoDervish youre better off finding your own bus. I think youre missing the point terribly. People go to this place to connect with Chris and what he stood for. If you want to challenge yourself, do it on your own path.
Note: If you have to find out where it is by commenting on a UA-cam clip, you're probably not taking it seriously enough to make any sense.

I was there, two years before Chris...
It happened actually after two years on the road. Roaming around from Mexico City to Sonora, to Phoenix, to Grand Canyon, to Yosemite, thru Humboldt County and the Redwoods, thru Upqua´Oregon, to Yellowstone, to Glacier, thru BC, thru Yukon, to Haines and Kenai, to Fairbanks, to Talkeetna, and and finally up there, the footsteps of Denali... all by myself, all on my own, just with knife, compas, fire, and camping stuff... And I... me... also experienced the no-shit power of nature, fear of death, infinite smallness... a very strong experience... with a very cold and windy end-of-autumn rain storm that lead me lost in the tundra, close to a nervous mother bear and her cubs... very few blueberries and oatmeal left, almost none water tablets...
So... one grey cold day I couldn't hang more on and felt on my knees, and cried out loud my humility and awareness of the no-good-no-bad powers of nature, and cried out our stupid human egocentric believes towards the infinite greatness of nature, life-death and universe...
After a freezing night, the sun shined and a rainbow flew over the great Denali, right there, in front of me and my brothers caribou and moose... I knew it was time to go back to ol'good Mexico...
Then I head back, found my feather, found my song, found my love...
Now, 30 years after, I try to keep faithful to those visions, to those learnings... we humans are very wrong on our perceptions of life and nature, May love save the world from our ego...
I found love. I work love. I try to praise love thru living it.
    Bless you Candle Chris
    Blessings to all...

@plazzax theres a great vid that explains it on youtube - search history of the magic bus stampede trail. In short, they were going to build a highway across where the stampede trail is and a few buses were put out there for shelter for the prospectors. The highway was never built because it was to wet. Then there was an old mine and the bus was about halfway from the mine to Healy and was used to store supplies in World War II. In the 70's some trappers outfitted the bus.

It was dragged in behind a bulldozer by a construction company that was developing mining roads and used as shelter for the workers. There were two others I think that were removed but this was was left behind because the axle has broken and wasn’t able to be moved. Last year it was airlifted out by law enforcement and/or military because inexperienced hikers were dying and needing rescue while trying to find it.

Money is completely irrelevant to living when all is said and done it is worth as much as you make it worth.

@whereskim89 the hike was not overly difficult and June seemed like the best time to do it. Im 6'4 and the Tek was about to my belly at its deepest. In terms of the hike - its not difficult in terms of endurance or elevation - I live in the Cascades found those hikes to be a ton harder... its just difficult in terms of the river crossing and the desolation but Its doable if you prepare and have the will to want to go there. how in the world did the bus get out there in the first place? there must be a road leading to it?

was pulled out there in the 60s on a CAT vehicle (the bus wasnt actually used to be driven but as a shelter for the miners, thats why it has a stove and a bed) to work on a road leading out there, the roadwork was cancelled and has become the stampede trail as the bus was abandoned there and all works on the roads to be paved were cancelled

to house construction workers while the road was going in. Yutan purchased three junked buses ,outfitted each with bunks and a simple barrel stove, and skidded them into the wilderness behind a D-9 caterpillar

hussein alatab it was one of three buses that were used for housing of laborers who were working on the stampede trail either mining or logging, I don’t remember which one...the project they worked on was unfinished but they left the bus there
