  • Magic Bus 142, where Chris McCandless passed away 28 years ago was moved by a military helicopter on June 18 - 2020 out of it's resting place for the last 60 years! What a shock this was and I do feel so blessed to have been there in person and also to likely have some of the last footage of the bus on the Stampede Trail.

Thanks for sharing! Great shots of the bus interior! I still think they should build a "bridge" and then put the bus back in it's original location. The whole purpose and meaning behind the Chris McCandless story lies not only in the bus itself, but in the location where he survived in the wild for months as well. I don't understand why it is not being taken seriously as a historic landmark for future generations to come and visit.

What McCandless did was so reckless and so irresponsible, it was borderline suicide. He not only killed himself, he hurt his own family and friends as well. Yet he is considered as a survivalist by some, and worshiped by others as a hero. It doesn't make any intelligent sense.
Two people drown trying to reach the "sacred" 142 bus, and many others needed to be rescued by Search and Rescue. I'm glad the bus is gone. Hopefully people will now finally start to forget about the total loser McCandless, and the piece of junk bus.

Chris McCandless is a genius. He had such exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, and originality I'm almost at a loss for words. I'll bet all those people who told him how to live his life won't be tellin' anybody else how to live theirs. Next time somebody tells me how to live life I think I'll trek off into a remote wilderness and kill myself from starvation.

They can be tourists in a more friendly environment. I'm a hiker/camper/climber myself. I'm not sure how I feel about the allure associated with this bus. A total of two people have died going to or from the bus in all the years it was there (not including McCandless). People die climbing mountains, swimming, hiking, and all other things routinely. 15 rescues in a dozen years. Much less than many other mountain climbs entail. Oregon's Mount Hood just for one example; At least 130 have died climbing the mountain, with around 50 rescue missions per year! 300 have died on Everest...and on and on. Yet 2 total deaths and 15 total rescues were too much? The bus should have stayed!

No that is NOT an argument it isn't about numbers silly it's about LIVES, needless loss of life including Chris's.
Why on earth would you want more people to go out there and continue to DIE so you people can have a warm
fuzzy at that bus? That's CRAZY you want MORE families to go through the loss of a loved one like Chris's sister?
The fact of the matter is NOBODY would even go to the bus if it weren't for the book and movie. Nobody would
care PERIOD you DON'T NEED to turn the bus into an idol just go reread to book and rewatch the movie.
That bus has been broke down there for 60 years, it's in a harsh unforgiving WILDERNESS with GRIZZLY BEARS
walking around and people have been attacked NOBODY'S talking about that. The locals do get to have a say
about the resources spent in THEIR STATE and THEY WANTED THE BUS GONE end of discussion. Chris and
all the other non-natives to Alaska had no business going out there unprepared in the first place! This kid may
as well have just committed suicide, as go out there with ONLY a bag of rice, and no weapons or hunting skills.

@@DiligoBarba just like other historic spots around the world and the stories behind them. Do you think people will fly to Cambodia to see a place full of skulls and named Killing Field for fun? The fact that there have been so many people coming to that bus just proves that Chris's journey meant something to them. Of course, there were people who weren't well-prepared for it, just like Chris. But at the end of the day, it's people's choices and the trip takes a spiritful part of their life. It's very easy to destroy things but extremely hard to build them up. It's not the bus that's gone, it's Chris and all of the meaningful things about it. Instead of removing it, perhaps just look at the dangerous matters and put on warnings, signs, rules, even laws about going there. I mean, economically, it could have been a good thing for tourism for a certain group of people.

Sure, it will take some of the pressure off in going the whole way to where the bus was, but I would still like to hike a part of it to experience the area for myself and put myself in Chris's shoes.
I hope that they move it to somewhere on a hiking trail so people can still experience the bus in a similar way, I would still like to hike to it, leave a note and get my picture on the seat at the front. People die constantly in AK. I lived there 5 years. Hiking, climbing, hunting, bear attacks, avalanches. etc. Mostly from vehicle accidents and slipping on ice. When summer comes the place goes crazy. What are they going to do next to save us all from ourselves? You go to AK for adventure and they took a part of that away. Shame on them.

I have a lot of respect for Chris. He valued things in life that 99% of population ignores or takes it for granted, I am 43, I run a very successfull business, live on a beautiful 10 Acre property, but I often realize that life is passing me by and I am missing it. I bought into this capitalistic ideology that in life you are considered a success based on what you own and how much you earn, I may have money in my account but I know Chris had wealth no money can buy, I am sure he is in a better place today, RIP and God bless his soul.
What Craig Medred said about Chris is a sham and fraud, and poor journalism at it's best.

What a twist to the story. Unthinkable, senseless removal of the symbol which drew ppl from all over the world. Sad. The access to the Bus should have been addressed in the first place. Ppl will come to this place regardless bc it's a spiritual journey. Thank God you made it over there for all of us who weren't able. Chris's story will never end bc it's about our own searching and it touches our hearts.

I dont know if youll be able to see this comment. But i hope someday youll read this and response back.
Just last week i watched the movie into the wild and started knowing Chris through videos, articles, comments. And after that i started searching about the bus until i watched your video. Your video and justins video and even those videos of people who went there.
The feelings the your felt when you went there is what i felt after i watched the movie and while watching the your videos. And i just cant wait to feel that again when The time comes for me to visit the bus. Actually i already planned it with my friend. That a right after this pandemic and traveling is allowed we will go and visit the bus and we call it the adventure of a lifetime.
And today i woke with this news. I saw the author of the book post about it. And until now its 5pm i cannot eat or drink water because of this news. I feel really bad and sad. I’m out of words too. I havent seen the bus but watching your video now makes me cry and feel more sad. I am commenting to all the people who was able to visit the bus That they are very lucky. You and justin is very lucky to be able to experience part of of Chris life.
Theres a lot ways in order to mame the hike very safe. Theres a lot of options instead of removing the bus there.
Just like you i hope that they preserve it. I Hope that they guard cause for a traveler like us, that bus is not just a bus, that place is not just a place. It is something that is special for us, it is something that no word can describe why that bus and that place is very special for us. I will still visit the place and hike stampede trail. And i hope they will tell us their plans about the bus.
I am in tears while typing this brother.
If you have instgaram account please let me know i wanna follow you guys and hope to se e you guys in future travels.

John, thank you for such a personal opening of your heart and soul. I feel bad for so many people that cannot see the bus anymore in it's original location, it really did have a "magic" sense to it sitting in that clearing on top of the hill, overlooking the rivers. I wish they simply made a footbridge across the river. Sorry I'm not on instagram, but I do post videos on my channel from time to time. Thanks again and keep in touch!

@@paulatreides6218 First off nut job, I'm a he, not a she. The bus has sixty years of history, and not just the 100 plus days some naive unprepared person stayed and died there. My youth was very similar to Chris's in many ways. From a middle class eastern US family I spent years wandering around the US searching for something. I too ended up in Alaska, and I lived more in the wild than Chris did. I didn't live in a bus that was right on a trail. If you want to be in the wild, you need to get off the trail. The farther off the trail you are, the more you get into the wild. I lived off moose, ptarmigan, grouse and fish. I was never healthier in my life. Chris on the other had died. I could have easily died through the tiniest of mishaps, but I don't think anyone should have written a book about me if I had .
My one and only time I went to the bus was years before Chris. It was a quick day trip out and back with a few friends. The "Mayor" of Healy (an affectionate term for the town drunk) was staying there while he ran a trap line. Along the way, another friend had a small wall tent set up with a sweet set up inside. He was staying there running his dog team around. I never went back. There were too many other remote places in Alaska I thought were more beautiful. Which is why they filmed the movie down near Cantwell. They put the bus in a location I used to run my dog team past when I lived with my wife in 14'x21' dry cabin with no electricity.

A question for Parkland Films (or anyone else inspired by Chris:
Going forward do you think the actual bus or the stampede trail is more important to visit?
This image of the bus being lifted away is so jarring for me to watch. I wish I was able to visit before it was too late. A part of me hopes they scrap the bus. For me the whole appeal of visiting bus142 was to see the place where Chris found shelter during his escape from civilization. To visit the bus in a museum parking lot would just seem hollow. The challenge of getting to the bus was just as appealing as the actual bus its self. I think Chris would agree.
There is an abandoned mine 20 miles past the bus. Without the bus as a focal point maybe I'll hike all the way out there instead. Or maybe without the bus the other places Chris visited on his two year odessy like the pacific crest trail, lake mead, or slab city are just as good / better places to visit. It was Chris's journey that inspired me to consider visiting the bus in the first place not his destination.
    * There is already a replica bus (used on the set of the movie) parked in front of a micro brewery in Healy. Do we really need a second empty bus parked somewhere?

I am reading " The Wild Truth by" Carine Mc Candless, and learned of this video today, this afternoon, and while looking at family photos in the book, Chris is with peace, I sense this with this move of the bus is shocking to many, people go unprepared as nit fully knowing what they are getting into with the elements ,it is a wise decision for people to honor his safety in legacy in full agreement.
