I think Dean was just trying to protect Sam. Parents do this all the time, they think if they pretend they're not afraid than their kids won't be afraid. Obviously Sam isn't a child but to Dean he is still his baby brother and I think he just wanted to avoid thinking about it because he couldn't change things anyway. Nice acting by both guys in this scene.
