I have a 8.5 for tricks and a shaped board for crusing, i went up from 8.0 to 8.5 because 8 made me constantly feel like i was gonna roll my ankle because of how small the board is to land on my shaped board is 10.5 ish at the widest, and at the trucks it narrows to 9.0 (santa cruz winkowski), its actually a lot less heavy than i thought it would be, even with 60mm cruiser wheels, i can still pop ollies on it and thats all i really need to ask from it. the only issue i have is that the tail is so wide that (as a beginner) i cant tell if my foot is centered on it correctly for popping, but thats not really an issue with the width of the board, its moreso the fact the tail is square and not popsicle shaped
All those things are important BUT I feel wheelbase is more important than the others. It effects your ability to pop and flip your board. Another factor is being comfortable with speed which is needed on vert ramps and bowls. Smaller WB are good for technical skateboarding and bigger wheelbases are good for bowl and vert skateboarding.
Definitely agree dude! But this video is more directed to beginners trying to figure out which size is best for them as they are getting started. I didn't want to overwhelm them with too many variables like length, wheel base & concave at the same time lol I might cover all of those extra points you listed in a seperate video though 🤔
Yeah and also when you are tall with long legs, a longer wb does help alot in general. When I was riding an 8" with a 14.125 wb, it felt like I was always on the nose with my front foot, because it was just too short. Now my sweet spot seems to be around 14.5 to 14.75 Although your trucks also matter. I once had an 8.5 with a 15" wb and with thunder trucks it was unskateable. But with ace af1 the shortened wb made it great. I think wb to overall length ratio is important too.
i just got back into skating after a 20 year break. i remember in the 90's an 8" board was considered big. 7.75 is what i always rode. i just bought an 8" board and it did seem big at first but im getting used to it.
Same. I'm 42 and have never had anything bigger than a 7.75. I only took about 10 years off but decided to get a new set up last week and went with a 8.38. Haven't skated it yet but it definitely feels big in hand.
Back on a board after 20 years myself… picked up a 7.75 and I wear a size 11 shoe lol. With that said, I do enjoy the flick just like I did as a teenager.
Same! I used to skate in the 90s too. I remember starting on a wider board, which I think was literally prob an 8.75. then I remember going way down to like a 8.25 or even 8, and it was easier to flip and handle. I've been a size 10/10.5 shoe forever, but in my 40s now 10 is spot on. So I'm sticking with an 8" board to roll around on
I just got back into skating after taking an 18 year hiatus due to just adulting. Im about 210 lbs, 9.5 shoe depending on the company, my board is a 7.5. i prefer a smaller deck because it feels alot better to me than a bigger board. The 7.5 is going to be my street skate board, i do have another once i reach that stage to dropping into bowls that is an 8.5. On the street, skating the thinner board just makes me feel more connected with what im riding over and i have more balance. On the bigger board, i legit feel alot more wobbly and unstable when i start going faster. weird shit but my gods its awsome to skate again! OH and my street board is one ive dreamt of having ever since i played THPS2. The "bloody nose" board from zero. shits damn amazing to get used to skating again!
That's sick man! Welcome back 🥳 A lot of people that started skating in the 90's still prefer a smaller board like that since that is what they learnt on and was the style back then so it makes sense that that's the size you still feel comfortable on 👌🏼 Are your trucks loose on the 8.5" board? That could be why you feel a bit more unstable when you start going faster on that set up 🤔 That's so good to hear man! 🙌🏼
@@LeonPaxton the bigger board i have the trucks actually a bit tighter than the ones on my zero deck. Meh ill just have to alternate lol. Skate or die mang!
Good video Leon, you've come at a different angle compared to other videos on this topic. I'm 5'11 and wear size 12 shoes and ride my first set up board which is 8.25. When I first started a year ago my homie suggested I buy a 8.0 complete which I did, at one stage I was actually going to go down to a 7.5. I tried one at the skate shop and felt as if I would've broken my ankle on it, the staff member suggested I ride 8.25 as that's considered standard adult size. One of the homies at Lachlan's Line rides a 9.0, he let me ride it and it was like riding a surfboard. I found it too cumbersome, I could barely pop an ollie on it. I'm pretty happy with my 8.25, after watching this video I may experiment with an 8.38 in the future.
Thanks heaps man! Yeah dude, 7.75" would have been waaaay to small and dangerous for you lol Some of my homies jump on my board and say the same thing, that it's like riding a boat and they wonder how I even get it off the ground 😂 That's a good idea man, I'd suggest about an 8.38"-8.5" for you just based off of your shoe size and your personal preference 👌🏼
Started on a 7.75" and I am now on a 8" twin-tail (love it BTW). My cruiser is 8.125" and I find going above 8.25" would be too much for me. Shoe size is 9 and height is average. Wheel size is 54mm. I'm still learning as I just started 2 years ago and been skateboarding on and off due to work and life stuff. Starting to land my first ollies while moving (they look ugly and I have some stuff to fix but it feels good) and can do kick turns and drop-in on small ramps and banks. I love going in bowls, just carving and going in slow as I learn to pump properly. I just do a couple of laps each time and I am not experienced enough to do full lines in bowls continuously. Guess what I am trying to say is that I am getting closer to a "jack of all trades" setup I'm comfortable with for riding mainly in parks, a bit in bowls and a bit on footpaths. Most important things for me there are wheel size, shape, duro and board width. I want something that will last, feels comfortable and light enough to do basic tricks.
Getting gifted an old 8.3 board set up was the blessing, I was having fun with my 7.75 but I wasn’t landing on my toes too often so I started to feel the pressure of landing tricks on my legs. 8.3 is super comfy now!!
I'm < 6 foot, about 65 kg and ride a 8.125, although I'm considering changing to a 7.75 for something lighter. I mostly ollie up to 3 stairs (almost 4 now) and love 50-50 and board side grinds. Working on kickflips and pop shuvs etc in different stances to keep up in games of skate I play with friends. Can't decide between more space to land on the deck or making it as light as possible.
If you want something lighter you can also look at getting hollow truck, although they are more expensive, that way you still have a lot of board coverage and don't have to sacrifice going down a board size
Size 11 shoes, always ridden a 7.75" because Rodney Mullen used to ride it. Problem was, it felt so narrow to land on that I never committed to landing a trick. Bought a 8.5" setup a few weeks ago and taking indoor skateboard lessons at age 38, I now feel like I can finally commit to landing on my board, hugely boosting my confidence. One question, I just ordered Spitfire conicals 54mm 99duro, do they slip out easily indoors or is the grip level just right?
Oh dude, that's good to hear! Yeah 8.5" will be a lot more comfortable for you for sure 👌🏼 They should be perfect for indoor skateparks, depending on how slippery the ramps and surface are. It's not until you ride a 101a that you will start to have problems with slipping out more on slippery surfaces
@@LeonPaxton Thanks so much! I love your content mate, huge compliments, exactly the kind of videos and reviews I am looking for. Keep it up and I am sure your channel will grow a lot. Cheers
Good video on the widths alone but Wheelbase is as, if not more important than deck width, as someone else has stated. Even for beginners- You also have wheel size and type (conical, square, pros and cons to these also which everyone seems to overlook) you have the concave (mellow, deep, med) different trucks (hi, med, low, hollow, titanium which all effect weight and wheelbase in of themselves), then there’s bushings in each type of truck, you’ve inverted kingpins which effect grinding, round or oval noses and tails, tails and noses same shape and size plus probably more I’ve missed. Good video but there’s a LOT more to it which you figure out over years and years of trying different setups
Yeah dude, wheel base and length is definitely important too. Especially different branded trucks having a different truck geometry that could change the wheelbase as well! But for the sake of this video I kept it strictly about picking the right width board for you as a beginner since I didn't want to overwhelm them with the different intricacies of a skateboard set up and also as a beginner learning how to push, roll and balance, wheel base, deck and wheel shape isn't as crucial at this point so I will be working on videos addressing all of these points directly. Very good points though 👌🏼
I was considering a 8.5. I have US 13 and I do street skating. However I also thought a 8.25 might suit me better because I’m scared of not being able to flip my board as easy when I have an 8.5. I currently have a 7.75 (I know that’s way too small for me but I bought it when I didn’t know anything about skating)
I am size 11 and always had 7.75 or 7.875 if I could find them. Literally all of the problems people said they had with skinny boards I never had. I did techical flip tricks and drops/gaps with no issues. I think it is more mental for people than anything, I learned how to push properly in both goofy and regular as well as how to push mongo in both without it looking weird, pushing mongo was a game changer for rough terrain and cracks as you can lift the weight off the front wheels and roll over anything. But, I haven't met anyone else who can push mongo with out going all Bambi legs.
Damn that's sick then man! Skateboarding is so subjective so sometimes the guidelines I put in place don't apply, like in your case, but it's always about what feels most comfortable to the individual skater 👌🏼 Haha yeah most people don't look natural pushing mongo at all lol
I think the correct wheel base and length is more important than width tbh. An 8.5 with a longer wheel base feels way different compared to the safe size board with a short wheel base
Definitely agree dude! But this video is more directed to beginners trying to figure out which size is best for them as they are getting started. I didn't want to overwhelm them with too many variables like length, wheel base & concave at the same time lol I might cover all of those extra points you listed in a seperate video though 🤔
Can someone help me out with what to go for. I'm 6'4 size 12 UK 13 US and weigh 230 I'm after something for more comfortable riding but also agile and light enough to flip it.
Im dont knowwhich size to get, as im afraid that Tricks will be very hard to learn on a big Board, I was thinking of getting a 8 5 deck, but my shoe size being US 16, i would need like a size 10😂. Can somebody help me out? Also to add: I have been riding a longboard for a long time and skated occassionally, but never learnt any tricks, now I want to learn some tricks like the Ollie, stuff like that, so thats going to be the main use for this Board
I’m a size 13 beginner and my only board is a 7.7. I don’t know what style skating I want to do yet and I’m worried this size board might cause bad habits. Is it a bad idea to learn like this?
That’s fine mine, it takes a little while and testing out a few different sizes to find out what feels best for you but for a size 13 I would definitely recommend something bigger than a 7.7”. I’d start around an 8.5” minimum
It takes a few boards to actually find your size. You should be able to skate at speed comfortably and turn. 8.5 is a good starting size. Move up or down a size from there.
I'm a 5'10" male with a size 10 shoe. always rode 7.5 / 7.62 because smaller decks give me more pop for ollies and I can do flip tricks faster. I ride my back truck tight as shit (for stability when ollying and stuff) and the front one a little loose for quick steering. now if I'm skating pure ramps/bowls, yeah I'll take an 8 for that
Hi, my size 11 us, i am a beginner and taking indoor lessons, i bought 56mm conical and don't know which size of board and trucks should i take 8.5 or 8.75?
Going off of that I would say an 8.25" would be perfect for you! But saying that, you would need to ride a few different boards to see which one actually felt most comfortable to you and the way you want to skate since personal preference is sometimes more important.
Yea I think a lot of my issues were the board was to small and wheels wouldnt roll. I probably just cruise. Shoe size 11 ( womens ) and 223, though working on losing. I was riding a 6 inch width board.
Hi, I wear size 8.5/9 US shoes and ride an 8.5 skateboard. I'm a beginner, but I feel very comfortable cruising around the streets and the skatepark. What do you think? I know it's a personal preference, but I'm using an 8.5 Hockey board with a 14.25" wheelbase and 31.92" length, paired with Indy or ACE AF1 trucks, and it feels very comfortable to me.
Yeah dude, that set up sounds perfect for you! I usually encourage beginners to go bigger so they have more surface to stand on and feel more comfortable and it sounds like you e already nailed that 👌🏽
Yeah dude, you can definitely re use those trucks in a smaller board! The axles will just sit out slightly but the outside of the wheels should be in line with the outside of the deck 👌🏽
@@LeonPaxton thank you so much! I'm size 8.5, and I currently using a size 8 board. Feels like it's a bit difficult for me to flip things. So wonder if I should try a narrower board if it'll help me to flick the board easier
Ive seen this video several times now lol. I quit for almost 20 years and came back with my last board being a 7.6 and have board madness trying to figure out what to ride with a size 10 skate shoe. Im debating my next board being either a 8.12 on 8.0 trucks or an 8.5 on 8.38 trucks, but the wheel base has to be between 14.2-14.4. I have a 14.5 WB on a 8.38 and its so long the nose will hit my shin when I ollie. My kick flips tend to flick off the pocket and my other set up 8.06 with 14.38 board, I flick off the nose. Not sure if its compensation for the extra width or just because the overall length is too long, but I do know my 8.06 still feels mostly not that much different in width than a 7.75 board which has like a 13.75 WB which is way too short.
That's sick, welcome back! It could definitely be a compensation, I skated a longer board than usual yesterday and couldn't figuire out the sweet spot for my front foot on kickflips lol Yeah a board with a 14.25" wheelbase sound perfect for you man 👌🏼
Question I have stage 4 independent I'm about order heroin skateboards deck being independent trucks are 9 inchs length so what type of egg board get 9.25 wide or 9.5 please comment id appreciate it
Yeah dude, they will be more suited to a 9.25” egg board if you want them to be as close to flush as possible 👌🏽 But I ride 9” trucks on boards between 9.1” to 10” and don’t find and problems with the trucks sitting slightly inside or outside the board edge. That and I don’t want to have to buy a new set of trucks to suit every different board size I try lol
So I’ve been skating an 8.25(slappy st1 trucks) have a 13 shoe. I’m 29 and just got back into skating this summer. I made crazy progress in 4 sessions. Bs 180s and shoves, fs shoves, can Ollie onto a 10 in box, and I dropped in for my first time ever the other day. I push goofy and the last time my right foot fell off and rolled. I’ve been contemplating going up in size but I’m worried I’ll never do flip tricks if I do. Would it hurt my learning or is it a rider specific deal?
Oh dude that's sick, you're coming back strong! Not really dude, the board would obviously flip slower if it's bigger but having a size 13 foot, a bigger board would be a lot easier to land on for sure. It's definitely all rider specific though and it will take years to find what your perfect set up is for your body and style of skating
Things have changed from the turn of the millenium. 7.5” was for tech stuff 7.75” was normal 8” was wide and 8.5” was for vert. I started skating vert on a 7.5 because i couldn’t piece together a 8.5” board. 😂 It took me like 6 months to get all the parts. And my shoe size is 14 so, yeah…
@@LeonPaxton Alright man thanks for the advice. Just wondering what some good board brands are. I live in Brisbane which is decently close to Sydney so next time I pop over there I can have a look at some skate shops!
Most board brands in stores are pretty good, they slightly vary in shape and concave though so you would have to try out a few different brands before you find the right fit for you but I recommend just getting whatever the cheapest decks are in a skate shop. They are still good quality so I'd just pick up a cheap one at first 👌🏼
My shoe size is 11.5, I want to get a cruiser type skateboard such as a landyachtz. I don't want to do any tricks on it just ride it. I'm too old for that. I have not ridden in many many years but I know how to. I read that you don't want to go more than 0.75 inches off the board on both sides, so this would put me at a 10inch wide board which sounds too big. What do you think? oh yeah, and what about board length? I'm 6 foot 1. thanks.
Nah dude, those measurements don't make sense at all. It's definitely personal preference and what feel most comfortable to you! There is no equation that helps determine what size board you should be riding. You might just have to hop on a few different sizes to feel what is best for you but it might take some time
I just figured out the other day, that the tail has to be 6.75 to 6.875 for the deck to be perfect for me then everything else is not as important but never do 14 inch wheelbases. Just doesn’t feel right!
I’m new to skating at 35. Been a avid longboard rider for a long time. But tried a bunch of decks at my skate shop. Feel like the 7.87 felt pretty right but not sure might just go with a 8 yo try. I’m more about The flow then the tricks. My guess is it all comes down to the truck length and how it feels between your feet. Like snowboarding or longboarding it’s the feel of being in the pocket. Where you feel settled into the board. Obviously snowboards you can adjust bindings. Skating you can’t.
That’s sick, welcome to the skateboarding world 🥳 I’d say a wider board will be more comfortable for you man if you’re just cruising around and flowing. Having a wider base to stand on with definitely help with your stability and control 👌🏽
8.5 was too big for me, 8.25 too small. I found 8.38 is perfect for me. I wear a size 9/9.5 and am not a big person, so this is the perfect middle ground for me. Wide enough for comfort but still small enough to flip. If I could make my wheelbase shorter I would.
Je chausse du 46 taille française j'aime le street et le park jai une 8.25 je la trouve un peu petite j'ai mes talons et mes orteils qui dépasse que me conseilleriez-vous ? Merci
Ive been riding 8.5 since 2022 and then i stopped skating and just started back last week! ive noticed my feet are bigger and im a US14 shoe size and we just got a new skatepark built! (im from New Zealand so all the skateparks here are being revamped) and ours just got new conrete, park and bowl and i want to go wider for the bowl, what woud you recommened
@ YOOOO W RESPONSE, Im not actually sure whos making our skateparks! The whole countries townships are being revamped from top of the north right to bottom of the south! Best bails ever coz we just slide and everyone is so stoked with such designs and i said to alot that its australian influenced with orange concrete! the other township i lived in before moving back to my main home town had gotten revamped by canadians and australians over lockdown period!! Thanks bro ill try a 9 and need me some knee pads too! im yoo scared to damage my knees these days coz theyre wrecked from years of flooring and rugby😂
@ When i come back to aussie youll have to show me around, are you in sydney too? ill be over in a few months! all my belongings are there just not my skateboard when i moved🤣 didnt know where skateshops were
I just bought a 8.5inch skateboard I went down from 9.3inch which I found to hard and heavy soy I went back to 8.5inch and my shoes size 9us you think it’s should fine
Just started get back into it as i rider a cruiser, I like to do olie and kick flip and grinding rails and ramps just getting use riding a half pipe slowly working my up to get better
I'm a 8.5 shoe size in women's but my big wide feet cause me to prefer wearing 7 or 7.5 in men's shoes and i skate an 8 inch board. Not much of a trickster yet as i just got back into skating and it's something i did when i was young like 8 to a mid teens (never got REALLY good though lol) skated 8 since i was a teen, i kind of feel like i would prefer an 8.1 but the 8 is pretty perfect too
I’d say starting off with an 8” board would be good for your size! There will be a lot of board for you to stand on and feel comfortable with but won’t be too big and heavy either 👌🏽
im a size 12US and i feel like alot more comfortable on larger boards but i want still be able to do like ollies and drop in and some flippy stuff in the future. Im new to skating still a bit so what size should i get?
You'll still be able to do all of that on a bigger board man, so it's about what feels most comfortable to you, which seems like a bigger board. What size boards have you tried before?
@@LeonPaxton Thank you so much for actually replying 🙏 ive only ever ridden an 8.25 but it just felt wayyyy too small lately. I just upgraded to a 9 and i feel so much more comfortable on it!
I wear a US12 and love an 8" board I also just set up an 8.5" to try it out. Its great is some ways and horrible in others. Maybe I'm just so used to the 8" Time will tell
Fingers of flat between tail and bolt holes = 3 if tall, 2 norm, 1 short (be truthful about your height or you will get nailed more). Basically the actual bigger person = more fingers to flat and flatter tail as have the leverage and weight. If you are under 32 inch inseam you need a steeper tail and less fingers of flat. Further you need the room between your legs to flip board around so want a shorter board unless you like doing the splits and landing on your junk. The smaller the board you learn things on the more precise and better technique you will have. So if you want a trick on lock long term go small enough it challenges you. After you get one size/shape down try all to finesse things you missed because learning is the gap inbetween.
That's very true man and no one really talks about that either. Ben Degros is the only one that has explained the fingers of flat but definitely makes a difference!
i ride a 9.25, because it was the first deck i bought myself, and ever since just kept up the habit of riding 9.25s, as a result, i even buy brands i hate when they put out a board in my size
Hey Leon does a 8.25 Krux trucks fit a 8.38 deck I am size 9uk shoe size and I am 5 foot 5 inches tall and I am loving your videos man very informative keep up the good work man
@@LeonPaxton thank you so much man I appreciate it I am watching all of your videos and I find them very helpful and informative man I am glad i found your UA-cam channel
Yo so Im 15, size 11.5ish (in vans) and have gone through my first 8" complete and am going to build a new set up. I want to go for a 8.25 board bc my feet are too fuckin big for a 8 but I also want it to not be too difficult learn kick flips bc I can't do it yet. Suggestions?
Getting trucks that match your deck width usual helps or even a size that sits slightly under. And then I would say anywhere from a 52mm to 54mm wheel 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton Yea im aiming for 53-54. The independents are confusing bc theres the 39 which is 8.25 and 49 which is 8.5 and then two others in the middle. But yea how much would it affect my ride if I got the 8.5 ones? I mean, I want it to be a bit more stable and easy to lock into grinds an shit
Either way will be fine man, trucks a little bit bigger than your board will definitely create more stability but staying within a quarter inch bigger or smaller than your deck will be fine 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton It's just that the next size down on trucks from 8in axle is 7.6 and that's just not enough truck for me. I would rather have the trucks slightly smaller than the board but an 8in deck causes me to lose a lot of tricks so I've always just settled for my usual set up. The wheels don't usually reach the very end of any size axle so the wheels are pretty much flush with deck only the axle protrudes .125 - .2 if that makes sense. Basically if you measure from outside of wheel to outside of wheel instead of end of 8in axle the wheel to wheel it's about 7.8 - 7.875 or even 7.91
Yeah that’s true! That’s how a lot of people look at it too, they like to have their wheels flush with the outside of the board rather than their axle nut
6’5” tall, 11.5 shoes. I think the lowest I’m comfortable to go is probably 8.25”. Something like an 8” and I’d need to do stuff really clean every time. I think I could skate 8.25-8.75 comfortably as long as the wheel base isn’t too long. 14.5” is probably where I draw the line. Anything beyond that and the board feels so heavy.
@@LeonPaxton don’t get me wrong, I do feel more comfortable on longer wheel bases but I picked up a lot of boards with 14.25” wheel bases and have grown accustomed to skating them and when I step on a 14.5” wheel base I’m not as immediately comfy and my pop just feels sluggish. Currently it’s all wet all of the time and my rain/wet board is 14.25 and like 31.75 in length and I’m stuck riding that for a bit since it’ll most likely be like this for another month and a half at least. If it breaks though I have a 14.5” wheel base deck that I have ridden a bit that can take it’s place but there’s no point in ruining perfectly good decks unless I have to. But the plan is to get more accustomed to 14.5” and see if I can’t make that my new thing. I do like a longer board. These sub 32” decks just feel a little short at times. I can’t wait for more dry months to roll on so I can finally start to experiment a little again. I’ve had 10 sessions in the last 16 days and all of them have been wet ones. Going out later today when it’s hopefully not raining but it’ll still be wet.
@@LeonPaxton I have an underpass close by but there’s bikes and electric kick bikes zooming about so it gets stressful to constantly be on the look out not to mention the noise when landing 😂!
freestyle skating has it's own boards entirely. look it up. or just get something on the smaller wnd like 8ish. unless you have big t/ are very tall then you just need a bigger board
Okay... My 9 year old sister wants to get into skating... She wears size 1, she doesn't wanna do all the tricks n stuff, just something to cruise on but maintain the old school board look.
@@LeonPaxton i started skating in 2001. That was the main board size back then. I remember when I moved up to 7.75 and then eventually to 8.125. But I used to be better at flip tricks in my first few years, when I was skating the 7.5 and the 7.75. But I guess everybody kind of starts skating with all the weird rocket flips and varial flips and shitty double flips. And once u come into your own u realize stylish tricks are more fun to do than silly double flips.
Leon I agree, yes, shorter wb affects how light the board is, but thats very minor if yo could add the trucks that make wb smaller, to give more leverage, the trucks that are opposite of thunders and ventures. My ace classics are way heavyer than my thunder hollows, but make the pop of 8.5 way lighter. So a heavy setup with light pop-feel is also possible and its really good because it does not let the board bounce away from your feet at the moment of catch. Just something to consider.
Yeah dude, so true! I'm trying to work on a video about the importance of deck length and wheelbase too but the truck geometry of each brand definitely makes a difference to over all wheel base of the deck and how your deck is actually going to 'feel' as you're skating certain ways 👍🏽
@@LeonPaxton In case you should try Ace Classics, just to warn you, bushing are too soft and even Ace Hard bushings are too soft (I'm just 73kg) and blew them by overtightening. So I had to but 100 hard Minilogo top bushings to find my tightness work for these trucks. + these trucks make crooked grinds a bit harder to achive due to that massive lean back of hanger. But I don't know any other truck that give that much leverage, because making wheelbase the most short (of any trucks I know.)
I ride an 8.25, but tbh I feel like I fall off too much when landing tricks, so I might size up to 8.5 as it feels more comfy to me. I got a 10.5 shoe and am 5’8 feet tall, and I don’t do much tech tricks, just gaps, ledges and basic flip tricks here and there, so I don’t think an 8.5 size will be too bad to skate with 😁
Yeah dude, 8.5" sounds perfect for you then! Even stepping it up to an 8.38" might be a bit more comfortable and won't be to hard to adjust your flip tricks 👌🏼
I used to skate 8.5 - 9 then tired a 8.1 no different. It’s a skateboard we all can adjust to different size boards. Skating completely different sizes is fun .
@@LeonPaxton i got a real good deal on this 8.0 incher im probably gonna get it ngl im pretty new to skating i just have a longboard and learned how to go up and down ramps today
You dont make sense dude, you say its shoe size accordingly, then say its style accordingly..but I do see what you .ean by taking all factors and "averaging" it..but you make me feel like I messed up buying 8.1
Yeah it’s definitely all subjective and each area factors in to the final decision of what to ride but I might have made it a little confusing to understand lol
Shoe size and age is not a huge deal in board size I am 32 years old wear a shoe size anywhere from a size 11 to a size 12 and skate a 7.75 It’s all about what you like at the end of the day quit trying to make videos that are misleading 🙄
90s has a question. Are you saying Mike Carroll had a 4 inch foot when he skated 7.5? Naw. This video is wrong on a few levels. You do not need anything above 8 for the average person. 8.25 max. Anything above is new gen meta dumb.
What size board is the best for you guys?
I've been riding an 8.75" for the last 2 years now but lately I've been thinking of jumping up to a 9" 🤔
I use 8.0” boards because I have small feet
@@B1iT3S That should feel perfect then 👌🏼
I am 6'3 with a shoe size of 47 (Europe) and also ride a 8.75
I have a 8.5 for tricks and a shaped board for crusing, i went up from 8.0 to 8.5 because 8 made me constantly feel like i was gonna roll my ankle because of how small the board is to land on
my shaped board is 10.5 ish at the widest, and at the trucks it narrows to 9.0 (santa cruz winkowski), its actually a lot less heavy than i thought it would be, even with 60mm cruiser wheels, i can still pop ollies on it and thats all i really need to ask from it.
the only issue i have is that the tail is so wide that (as a beginner) i cant tell if my foot is centered on it correctly for popping, but thats not really an issue with the width of the board, its moreso the fact the tail is square and not popsicle shaped
@@B1iT3Swhats ur shoe size?
All those things are important BUT I feel wheelbase is more important than the others. It effects your ability to pop and flip your board. Another factor is being comfortable with speed which is needed on vert ramps and bowls. Smaller WB are good for technical skateboarding and bigger wheelbases are good for bowl and vert skateboarding.
Definitely agree dude! But this video is more directed to beginners trying to figure out which size is best for them as they are getting started. I didn't want to overwhelm them with too many variables like length, wheel base & concave at the same time lol
I might cover all of those extra points you listed in a seperate video though 🤔
And I won't go into what the industry did to make sk8 the way it is now....
Yeah and also when you are tall with long legs, a longer wb does help alot in general.
When I was riding an 8" with a 14.125 wb, it felt like I was always on the nose with my front foot, because it was just too short.
Now my sweet spot seems to be around 14.5 to 14.75
Although your trucks also matter.
I once had an 8.5 with a 15" wb and with thunder trucks it was unskateable. But with ace af1 the shortened wb made it great.
I think wb to overall length ratio is important too.
so bigger wheelbase is better?
i just got back into skating after a 20 year break. i remember in the 90's an 8" board was considered big. 7.75 is what i always rode. i just bought an 8" board and it did seem big at first but im getting used to it.
Welcome back dude 🥳
Yeah man, I used to ride an 8.25" as a teen and everyone thought that was massive 😂
So I'm sticking with an 8" board to roll around on
Bunch of Littlefoots up in here
You’re getting so good at editing bruzzy keep grinding
Thanks my man! All the hard work is slowly paying off lol
Welcome back 🥳
A lot of people that started skating in the 90's still prefer a smaller board like that since that is what they learnt on and was the style back then so it makes sense that that's the size you still feel comfortable on 👌🏼
Are your trucks loose on the 8.5" board? That could be why you feel a bit more unstable when you start going faster on that set up 🤔
That's so good to hear man!
Yeah dude, 7.75" would have been waaaay to small and dangerous for you lol
Some of my homies jump on my board and say the same thing, that it's like riding a boat and they wonder how I even get it off the ground 😂
That's a good idea man, I'd suggest about an 8.38"-8.5" for you just based off of your shoe size and your personal preference 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton thanks for the recommendation bruv 👍
I know its 1 year old comment but I am trying to fathom the fact that you are 12US while being 5’11. I am 6’ and I wear 9.5US
@DHKarol 😆 Sorry, for the longest time. I actually thought I was 5'11. I've since been to the doctor, and he measured me being at 6 ft.
That definitely sounds like a good setup for your shoe size man 👌🏼
That's sick though! It sounds like you're picking it up fast dude 🥳
Getting gifted an old 8.3 board set up was the blessing, I was having fun with my 7.75 but I wasn’t landing on my toes too often so I started to feel the pressure of landing tricks on my legs. 8.3 is super comfy now!!
That’s perfect man, more board to land on 👌🏽
I'm < 6 foot, about 65 kg and ride a 8.125, although I'm considering changing to a 7.75 for something lighter.
Yeah 8.5" will be a lot more comfortable for you for sure 👌🏼
They should be perfect for indoor skateparks, depending on how slippery the ramps and surface are.
Cheers
@@hjoore No problem man!
Thanks dude, appreciate that so much 🙏🏼
Good video on the widths alone but Wheelbase is as, if not more important than deck width, as someone else has stated.
Damn dude! Yeah fair enough, an 8.25"-8.5" will feel so much better for your next board 👌🏼
What size board did you end up getting?? And what would you recommend ( I am also US 13)
Great video bro, glad to see you’re still active
Thanks man, appreciate that! 🙏🏼
Skateboarding is so subjective so sometimes the guidelines I put in place don't apply, like in your case, but it's always about what feels most comfortable to the individual skater 👌🏼
Haha yeah most people don't look natural pushing mongo at all lol
I think the correct wheel base and length is more important than width tbh. An 8.5 with a longer wheel base feels way different compared to the safe size board with a short wheel base
Definitely agree dude! But this video is more directed to beginners trying to figure out which size is best for them as they are getting started. I didn't want to overwhelm them with too many variables like length, wheel base & concave at the same time lol
I might cover all of those extra points you listed in a seperate video though 🤔
Back when I skated 15 years ago, I skated a 7.75 with a size 13 lol now people are skating pieces of plywood 😂
How times have changed 😂
Same here, size 13 and used to ride 7.75. I still use it to learn flip tricks
Was shocked when I got a new board and 8.0 was the smallest the skate shop had
I have a 8" zero complete and a 8.25" element deck custom setup. I love them both for different reasons but the 8.25" is just better.
Bigger is usually more stable and comfortable too 👌🏼
Can someone help me out with what to go for. I'm 6'4 size 12 UK 13 US and weigh 230
I'm after something for more comfortable riding but also agile and light enough to flip it.
I’d start with an 8.5” deck dude
Im dont knowwhich size to get, as im afraid that Tricks will be very hard to learn on a big Board, I was thinking of getting a 8 5 deck, but my shoe size being US 16, i would need like a size 10😂. Can somebody help me out? Also to add: I have been riding a longboard for a long time and skated occassionally, but never learnt any tricks, now I want to learn some tricks like the Ollie, stuff like that, so thats going to be the main use for this Board
If you have big feet and used to a long board then I’d definitely recommend a 9” board to begin with man
@@LeonPaxton I am a size 13 US 6.2 and I have tried an 8.25 board and I feel so uncomfortable. Would an 8.38 be okay or maybe I get an 8.5
I’d go straight up to an 8.5” dude 👌🏽
8.25 size 10us and I skate park and street
I’m a size 13 beginner and my only board is a 7.7. I don’t know what style skating I want to do yet and I’m worried this size board might cause bad habits. Is it a bad idea to learn like this?
That’s fine mine, it takes a little while and testing out a few different sizes to find out what feels best for you but for a size 13 I would definitely recommend something bigger than a 7.7”.
I’d start around an 8.5” minimum
what would you recommend for me my shoe size is a 7.5 US and i want it for any type of tricks and droping in
I'd start off with a 7.75"-8" dude! The 8" will feel a bit more stable and comfortable but for your smaller shoe size 7.75" might feel a bit better.
It takes a few boards to actually find your size. You should be able to skate at speed comfortably and turn. 8.5 is a good starting size. Move up or down a size from there.
That is true, you will start to figure out what you like and what suits you the best the more you advance in skateboarding 👌🏼
I'm a 5'10" male with a size 10 shoe. always rode 7.5 / 7.62 because smaller decks give me more pop for ollies and I can do flip tricks faster. I ride my back truck tight as shit (for stability when ollying and stuff) and the front one a little loose for quick steering. now if I'm skating pure ramps/bowls, yeah I'll take an 8 for that
Sick man, sounds like you've got your ideal set up all sorted 👌🏼
Hi, my size 11 us, i am a beginner and taking indoor lessons, i bought 56mm conical and don't know which size of board and trucks should i take 8.5 or 8.75?
Either one will be fine dude! I would personally go the 8.75" though, You will have more stability and control with a bigger board 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton Thanks for an answer mate, now i am happy, i'll take anti-hero 8.75)
No problem dude 🙏🏼
I’m 5’7 and I wear size 9 shoes and I’m interested in eventually doing tricks and stuff so what would be the best stats for me?
Going off of that I would say an 8.25" would be perfect for you! But saying that, you would need to ride a few different boards to see which one actually felt most comfortable to you and the way you want to skate since personal preference is sometimes more important.
@@LeonPaxton Tyty 🙏
after a 10 year break, I changed from a 7.75 because I had small feet, to a 8.5 cuz now I wear 12.5 and I’m taller, I feel it gives more balance.
Yeah dude, 8.5” would be way more suited to you now 👌🏽
Yea I think a lot of my issues were the board was to small and wheels wouldnt roll. I probably just cruise.
Shoe size 11 ( womens ) and 223, though working on losing. I was riding a 6 inch width board.
Damn where did you get a 6” board from!?
Hi, I wear size 8.5/9 US shoes and ride an 8.5 skateboard. I'm a beginner, but I feel very comfortable cruising around the streets and the skatepark. What do you think? I know it's a personal preference, but I'm using an 8.5 Hockey board with a 14.25" wheelbase and 31.92" length, paired with Indy or ACE AF1 trucks, and it feels very comfortable to me.
Yeah dude, that set up sounds perfect for you! I usually encourage beginners to go bigger so they have more surface to stand on and feel more comfortable and it sounds like you e already nailed that 👌🏽
I currently have an 8" board and truck. I wonder if I get a 7.75, or 7.5" board. Can I use those 8" trucks? Or I have to get a new trucks?
It could definitely be a compensation, I skated a longer board than usual yesterday and couldn't figuire out the sweet spot for my front foot on kickflips lol
Yeah a board with a 14.25" wheelbase sound perfect for you man 👌🏼
Question I have stage 4 independent I'm about order heroin skateboards deck being independent trucks are 9 inchs length so what type of egg board get 9.25 wide or 9.5 please comment id appreciate it
Yeah dude, they will be more suited to a 9.25” egg board if you want them to be as close to flush as possible 👌🏽
But I ride 9” trucks on boards between 9.1” to 10” and don’t find and problems with the trucks sitting slightly inside or outside the board edge.

Hell yeah, that deck will be perfect for you then!
Things have changed from the turn of the millenium. 7.5” was for tech stuff 7.75” was normal 8” was wide and 8.5” was for vert. I started skating vert on a 7.5 because i couldn’t piece together a 8.5” board. 😂
It took me like 6 months to get all the parts. And my shoe size is 14 so, yeah…
Hahaha yeah it's funny how things change over time. 8.5" is considered average these days!
I'd even go up to a 9" deck if you're a size 14 🤷🏽♂️
Hello mate. How tall are you and what is your preferred board size for strictly flatland technical flip tricks?
I'm 6'1" dude and if I was strictly only skating flat ground and doin flip tricks then I would probably stick with a 9.1"-9.25" board 👌🏼
I'm size 9 - 9.5 US. I like to do tricks and prefer boards on the smaller sides of things. What size board would you recommend?
I think 8” will suit you fine 👌🏽
@@LeonPaxton Alright man thanks for the advice. Just wondering what some good board brands are. I live in Brisbane which is decently close to Sydney so next time I pop over there I can have a look at some skate shops!
Most board brands in stores are pretty good, they slightly vary in shape and concave though so you would have to try out a few different brands before you find the right fit for you but I recommend just getting whatever the cheapest decks are in a skate shop. They are still good quality so I'd just pick up a cheap one at first 👌🏼
Which size I need to get if am just riding nothing else. My shoe size 11 in men’s in the USA and 13 in females in the USA
I’d say 8.5” would be a good starting point for sure 👌🏽
You might just have to hop on a few different sizes to feel what is best for you but it might take some time
You out here grinding
Thank you 🙏🏽
I like an 8 but some 8s dont feel true,to me only the flight deck is roomy amd good concave
I just figured out the other day, that the tail has to be 6.75 to 6.875 for the deck to be perfect for me then everything else is not as important but never do 14 inch wheelbases. Just doesn’t feel right!
Is 14" wheelbase too short for you?
I've got a homie that loves to ride 14" and below lol
Ok I used to skate when I was younger I am pretty big right now 280 6 5 and my shoes size is 17 wide or 18 what kinda bored do I need

I’m new to skating at 35. Been a avid longboard rider for a long time. But tried a bunch of decks at my skate shop. Feel like the 7.87 felt pretty right but not sure might just go with a 8 yo try. I’m more about
The flow then the tricks. My guess is it all comes down to the truck length and how it feels between your feet. Like snowboarding or longboarding it’s the feel of being in the pocket. Where you feel settled into the board. Obviously snowboards you can adjust bindings. Skating you can’t.
That’s sick, welcome to the skateboarding world 🥳
I’d say a wider board will be more comfortable for you man if you’re just cruising around and flowing. Having a wider base to stand on with definitely help with your stability and control 👌🏽

Does a bigger sized skateboard last longer for coasting, depending on how fast you're going?
Like roll longer or last longer in general?
Roll longer. Yes.
Nah dude, that would depend on your wheels and bearings
Oh, okay, I thought a bigger sized skateboard would roll longer for coasting.
I wear a US12 and love an 8" board I also just set up an 8.5" to try it out. Its great is some ways and horrible in others. Maybe I'm just so used to the 8" Time will tell
Haha yeah man, just depends on how you skate and how you like your setup to perform 👌🏽
im 6'0 with a size 11.5 shoe size at 17 years old, should i go for 8.5?
Yeah dude, I'd definitely start with an 8.5" for your size 👌🏼
What happened to the early 2000s 1999 era where we all skated 7.5
I'm a UK 12 (US 13) and i have a 7.75", but i do feel like i could benefit from an extra inch...
According to my ex anyway.
Hahaha yeah dude I'd recommend at least an 8.5" board minimum but the rest is none of my business 😂
@@LeonPaxton 😂 thanks, man.
I got an 8”5 and I’m a shoe size 6 and a half, will that be too big?
It will be big but shouldn’t feel too big. If anything you will be more stable and in control having a wider surface to stand on 👌🏽
@@LeonPaxton ahh thank you so much 😄
i ride a 9.25, because it was the first deck i bought myself, and ever since just kept up the habit of riding 9.25s, as a result, i even buy brands i hate when they put out a board in my size
That’s a good size man!
Hey Leon does a 8.25 Krux trucks fit a 8.38 deck I am size 9uk shoe size and I am 5 foot 5 inches tall and I am loving your videos man very informative keep up the good work man
Yeah dude, the trucks will just slightly sit in from the board but will be barely noticeable 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton thank you so much man I appreciate it I am watching all of your videos and I find them very helpful and informative man I am glad i found your UA-cam channel
All good dude! I'm glad you are enjoying them 🙏🏼
I'm 6ft, size 10 shoe, ride 8.25. I want go 8.3. I'm in technical stuff more
Riding 8.38" wont feel much bigger than 8.25" at all dude 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton should I try 8.5?
Yeah dude, I would just jump straight up to 8.5"!
Nah dude, 8.25” won’t be too hard to learn flip tricks at all! Especially for your shoe size you might feel more comfortable on an 8.5” even
@@LeonPaxton Thanks! After some other research too, I've already picked out my 8.25. Now the trucks-wheels ratio is the thing to figure out
Getting trucks that match your deck width usual helps or even a size that sits slightly under.
8.125. An 8 if I can’t get 8.1. Once I get to 8.25 it feels a little too big for my liking.
Sometimes personal preference is the most important factor 👌🏼
Im 5'10 and about 175lbs. I wear a US 9.5 - 10 shoe size and I prefer 7.8 - 7.875 deck with trucks axle width 8.0
I’ve been hearing a lot of people skating bigger trucks than their board lately!
It would definitely make your set up feel more stable right?
I'm shoe size 11 on 9 inch, since i didn't bother checking it's size
1:00 they used david jones in this. (Btw great video I ride 8’0)
Yeah I needed to find someone with the tiniest board 😂
Thanks so much man 🙏🏼
Started with 7,75 went up to an 8,25 and now gonna try 8,75. i like cruising and i got some big ass feet so 7,75 was a pain for me haha
Hell yeah, 8.75” will feel good man!
That's interesting that you say that Usually a longer wheel base helps taller guys like us feel more comfortable 🤔
@@RikRiorik Oh true, that makes sense!
That sucks man, is there any undercover spots you can skate while it's rainy and miserable?
@@LeonPaxton I have an underpass close by but there’s bikes and electric kick bikes zooming about so it gets stressful to constantly be on the look out not to mention the noise when landing 😂!
Damn that actually sucks so much!
15 years back 7.25- 7.75 was common. 8 - 8.5 was considered big.
It’s crazy how times change, 8.5” is so common now lol
What’s a good size for freestyle skating?
I actually have no knowledge of freestyle skateboarding or what would be best for that, sorry man.
freestyle skating has it's own boards entirely. look it up. or just get something on the smaller wnd like 8ish. unless you have big t/ are very tall then you just need a bigger board
Okay... My 9 year old sister wants to get into skating... She wears size 1, she doesn't wanna do all the tricks n stuff, just something to cruise on but maintain the old school board look.
Maybe just a little cruiser board would be perfect for now
@LeonPaxton thank you. I'll make the choice by that
I used to love skinny boards like a 7.75. i could flip tf out of it 🤣
Thanks this really helps
so if i have a size 14 shoe but i ride a 8.25
wait now i realise why i suck a stair sets maybe a should go to a 8.75
@@smhwill4937 Haha you don't suck! But yeah for a size 14 I would definitely recommend an 8.75" for sure dude
Im a 5ft9 male weight 72kg and wears 9.5 shoes
I’m size 13 and I’m considering dropping from a 8.25 to 8.1
Damn that will feel tiny! Flip tricks will work so well though 👌🏽
All the sizes and shapes!!
True!
I feel like yes 8 flips better than 8.25 but less landing room. I’m 10 shoe I think 8.25 is perfect.
Yeah it’s always a toss up between which you want more of lol
Dave Bachinsky kickflipped El Toro on a 7.5”
That's actually wild!
Haha that's very true man! I was doing all kinds of whacky tricks as a teen but now I just stick with the ones I do well and look better lol
8.3 not too big but big enough 👍
I ride an 8.25, but tbh I feel like I fall off too much when landing tricks, so I might size up to 8.5 as it feels more comfy to me. I got a 10.5 shoe and am 5’8 feet tall, and I don’t do much tech tricks, just gaps, ledges and basic flip tricks here and there, so I don’t think an 8.5 size will be too bad to skate with 😁
I’m like the exact stats as you and been thinking of going up aswell maybe 8.38 8.5 looks massive 😅
Yeah dude, 8.5" sounds perfect for you then! Even stepping it up to an 8.38" might be a bit more comfortable and won't be to hard to adjust your flip tricks 👌🏼
8.0 is the best because it's not too wide but not too skinny
yea ur gay
@@christravis_luvr0????
so an 8 isnt too skinny to 50 a handrail
@Edxmii BUSTED
8s are usually steep. I like mellow, so 8.25 works.
im a size 13 and use a 8.5
Does that board feel too small at all?
@@LeonPaxton no it feels great, when i was younger i rode a 7.75 with a size 12. i wanna start picking up skateboarding again
Sick. Get back into it then man, it's so fun!

That’s all good man, it just takes a lot of practice @@Nitelord_
Ima size 13 with 8.18 skateboard
Does that board feel too small for you?
If your just skate street no one should be skating anything higher than 8.25.
I used to skate 8.5 - 9 then tired a 8.1 no different. It’s a skateboard we all can adjust to different size boards. Skating completely different sizes is fun .
I skate 8.25 and I shoe size is 12
i have shoe size 11, should i get 8.0?
Flip tricks would be a dream on an 8.25" 👌🏼
I'd start at an 8.5" dude but it depends on your style of skating?
@@LeonPaxton i got a real good deal on this 8.0 incher im probably gonna get it ngl
im pretty new to skating i just have a longboard and learned how to go up and down ramps today
Oh sick, yeah can'r go past a good deal! That's awesome man, keep it up 🙌🏼
I’m size 11 and I skate 7.75
Flip tricks would be so easy!
I've got a 6
these boards are putting me to shame
I’m an 11 the biggest I’ll ever go is an 8.125
Do you do a lot of flip tricks?
You dont make sense dude, you say its shoe size accordingly, then say its style accordingly..but I do see what you .ean by taking all factors and "averaging" it..but you make me feel like I messed up buying 8.1
Yeah it’s definitely all subjective and each area factors in to the final decision of what to ride but I might have made it a little confusing to understand lol
whats up leon!
What's up man! Thanks for commenting 🙌🏼
Shoe size and age is not a huge deal in board size
I am 32 years old wear a shoe size anywhere from a size 11 to a size 12 and skate a 7.75
It’s all about what you like at the end of the day quit trying to make videos that are misleading 🙄
You obviously didn’t watch the whole video because I talked about how subjective skateboarding is and how it comes down to personal preference 😂
90s has a question. Are you saying Mike Carroll had a 4 inch foot when he skated 7.5? Naw. This video is wrong on a few levels. You do not need anything above 8 for the average person. 8.25 max. Anything above is new gen meta dumb.
10“ till i die
I skated my 10” deck this week again and loved it!
Size 12 shoe, proper fat, old, flat cruising and lame little hills...so a 9" for me
9" is a perfect starting point then dude!
Shoes size 9 And I ride 8.75 and 9 inch board
Hell yeah, big boards are always better 🙌🏼
im size 12 and skate an 8"
i wear EU43-44 im looking for a deck thats good for both cruising but still able to do some tricks should i get a 8.25 or 8.5?
I'd say an 8.25" man. Stable enough to cruise but then still thin enough for tricks 👌🏼
