Great review as always Pete. Late in his life I got to know Dick Heckstall-Smith very well. I ran a music venue and he would often appear, he was a musical tart, he would play with anyone because he just loved to play. Ever the professional, before every gig he would practice scales for at least an hour. We spent many (far too late) evenings talking together, drinking (far too much) red wine. He didn't often talk about his career, he was more interested in discussing philosophy and natural phenomena, but a couple of gems here. I once asked him if John Mayall's Bluesbreakers ever appeared with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and he replied " Yes, in 1967 we did a double header at the Filmore East and at the end of the gig we all got on stage and jammed together. Then again, I don't remember very much about 1967, I was in love at the time."
He also told me that he had played with all the great American sax players, Coltrane, Getz, Turrentine, Hawkins and he said "And to be honest, I can't hold a candle to them, but...... I can play the blues and they can't."
I think his 'Blues in b flat' off the Diary of a Band Vol 11 is drenched in atmosphere and as good a blues sax outing as you will hear.
Frank Zappa saw him playing with Colosseum and said " ...and I dug Colosseum - particularly Dick, the guy who plays tenor and soprano. Does he do sessions in London? he ought to - he's really a bitch."

    01 - Strange New Flesh.
    02 - War Dance.
    03 - Electric Savage.
    04 - Valentyne Suite.
05 - The Grass Is Greener.
06 - Those Who Are About to Die Salute You.
    07 - Daughter of Time.
    08 - Tomorrow's Blues.
    09 - Bread and Circuses.
10 - Time On Our Side.
Not taking anything away from Colosseum but definitely prefer Colosseum II, due to Gary & Don. I never had an issue with the vocal tracks.

    1. Daughter Of Time
    2. Bread & Circuses
    3. Valentyne Suite
    4. Time Is On Our Side
    5. Tomorrow's Blues
    6. The Grass Is Greener [US album, mostly remakes w/ Clem on vocals/guitar]
    7. Those Who Are About To Die Salute You - Morituri Te Salutant
I love Colosseum, all of their albums and I love the last three from after their initial break-up absolutely exciting. Less jazzy, sure, but stronger songwriting and moody vocals. All of them are worth owning - saw them live twice, outstanding of course :)

  • @roxannewalsh

Their top album to this day remains 1971's Colosseum Live. Their classic line-up at their best.
Actually the only connection between Colosseum and C II is drummer Jon Hiseman despite the name. Barbara Thompson who was Hiseman's wife already played with the band as guest in the 70's but had her own career as bandleader and composer before she joined when Dave Heckstall-Smith died. Her albums with Paraphernalia are pretty good, moody fusion/jazz rock.
I prefer the original Colosseum from the 70's as the most unique version of the band, they came out of the underrated Graham Bond Organisation (some songs in their repertoire even go back to that time). Colosseum II was pretty standard mid-seventies fusion although with a high musical standard but still nothing groundbreaking. The reunion albums go back to the classic phase but sadly add nothing new - they were top musicians and it is mostly their musical skill that attracts you here.
    10. Time on Our Side
    9. Tomorrow's Blues
    8. War Dance (This is a perfect example of the "second wave" of fusion and what sets it apart from the great stuff done in the first half of the 70's. It is not different from legions of other bands that did the same stuff at this time, nothing that makes this record "Colosseum".)
    7. Bread and Circuses
    6. Electric Savage
    5. The Grass Is Greener (This is a US only, however I always had 1971's Collector's Colosseum which had all the tunes from this one that were not on the original Valentyne Suite plus some singles, so it kind of covered the same repertoire)
    4. Those About to Die Salute You
    3. Strange New Flesh (Great version of Joni Mitchell's Down to You)
    2. Valentyne Suite
    1. Daughter of Time

My personal preference is for Colosseum2 over the original Colosseum, mainly due to Gary Moore and Don Airey, so my top 3 are
    1 Wardance,
    2 Electric Savage then
3 Strange New Flesh - I agree about the vocals spoiling it a bit, and yes, the extended version has a lot more to offer including a couple of live tracks.
Of the Colosseum Albums, Valentyne Suite is my favourite then the first album, Grass is Greener, Daughter of time, Bread and circuses, Tomorrows blues, Time on Our Side - so fairly similar to Pete's list apart from the Col 2 albums all being at the top.
Colosseum Live would be between those about to die and Valentyne suite.
There are a couple of great dare I say bootlegs out there as well - Colosseum 2 on sight and sound in concert and live in Germany 1977 both great - you may find them if you search on you tube.

Agree with a lot of comments on Colosseum Live, their best album by far, then i would rank their first three albums in that order after that. I prefer their debut slightly over Valentine Suite, a footnote to that,James Litherland, who is a fine Guitarist, formed Mogul Thrash with John Wetton and ex members of Average White Band. I would recommend any fans to give their album a listen, similar to Colosseum but with more guitar from Litherland. Never got into Colosseum 2.

The Joni Mitchell cover “Down To You” has amazing melodic guitar work from Gary and never fails to bring a tear to my eyes. I’ve heard that prior to his death Gary had said Colosseum II was the best band in terms of playing ability that he was ever in and I’d agree with that.

The U.S. original album version of “ For Those About To Die” features a different version of “ Valentyne Suite” with “ Beware The Ides Of March” at the end. “ Beware The Ides Of March” is based on a Bach melody and was recorded before the Procul Harum song. Both were based on the Bach melody. The live album is great especially the last part of “ Lost Angeles”. I would recommend Tempest- the band Jon Hiseman formed after Colosseum - featured guitar work by the late Alan Holdsworth and Ollie Halsall.😀

AND with Paul Williams, who was supposed to take over lead vocals from Clempson in Colosseum, but couldn't due to a health condition/problems. Also, "Upon Tomorrow" was originally a Colosseum number. But, even Tempest was almost two completely different bands, sound-wise. Loved their first album -- did not love their second (last) album, without Paul Williams.

Neat to rank them together but two different styles of music for me just as Fleetwood Mac would not work as ranking them all. Valentyne suite and especially the title track is their pinnacle. But for anybody new to them here, it has to be 'Colosseum Live'. Epic stuff and Dave 'Clem' Clempson is on fire, check out the solo on 'Lost Angeles'.
