If you're wondering: Which mirrorless camera should I buy for wildlife photography - the Canon R6 or the Canon R7 - this video is for you! Rather than comparing their similarities, I look at four key aspects where the Canon R6 and R7 differ a lot, namely: 1) Price, 2) the Sensor, 3) Low Light capabilities and 4) Frame Rates.
First of all, at $2500 US, the Canon R6 is substantially more expensive than the Canon R7, which retails for approximately $1500 US. So, if you don't have a massive budget, you might be forced into considering the Canon R7 over the R6, especially if you're saving up for a lens as well.
Why the big difference in price?
Well, the first thing is the difference in sensor type and size. The Canon R6 has a 20.1 mega pixel full frame sensor that produces incredibly high quality photos and is great for anyone who loves photographing animals in the environment as well as landscape and star scape photos. I do wish it was a little bit larger, offering more room for cropping, but all in all, the quality of photos this sensor produces is amazing.
The Canon R7 has a 32.5 mega pixel APS-C sensor, which magnifies your lens's focal length by 1.6. That means a 100-400mm lens is effectively a 160-640mm lens and a 150-600mm lens a 240-960mm lens. This is great for people who photograph animals in parks and reserves where you can't get very close to them, or birds that are not only far away, but also small. The Canon R7's larger sensor also leaves more room for cropping, but since it's a crop sensor, it won't perform as good in low light or at night as that of the Canon R6. Thus, the Canon R7 is not idea for landscape photography, night time photography or low light photography.
When it comes to ISO, the Canon R6 has a much larger range than the Canon R7. The Canon R6's ISO range is 100-102400, whereas the Canon R7's is 100-32000. You'll most likely start seeing grain at lower ISO levels on the Canon R7 than you would on the Canon R6. In other words, if you photograph a lot of animals in low light, like I do, the Canon R6 is the better option.
One of the most important things to consider, is the cameras' frame rates. The Canon R6 can photograph at 12 frames per second mechanically and 20 frames per second electronically, and for both the buffer is 240 frames in RAW, which is very good! The Canon R7 on the other hand can photograph at 15 frames per second mechanically and 30 frames per second electronically, but don't be fooled! This faster frame rate is not worth much when you look at the buffer. You can only shoot RAW files at 15 frames per second for for 51 shots and RAW files at 30 frames per second for 42 shots. That means you have to get your timing spot on, otherwise you've missed the shot.
In conclusion, the Canon R6 is great for people who values quality over longer focal lengths and the ability to crop, and who takes a lot of wider shots in low light. The Canon R7 is excellent for people who photograph smaller subjects (like birds) far away from them in good light, but if you expect to photograph a lot of action in RAW, the Canon R7 might just let you down.

There is an option for those on a budget that you did not consider. The price of an R6 is the same as the combined price of the R7 and the RP. The RP adds a full frame sensor with 26MP (more than the R6) but lacks most of the refinements for fast action, wildlife and sports. However, carrying an RP alongside the R7 allows landscapes, studio and other shots that benefit from full frame without having to swap lenses all the time as you will with the R6 alone. For example, lets say you are visiting an expansive waterfall with many birds fishing along the shore. An R7 with long telephoto (RF100-400 or better) will cover the wildlife while the RP with a wide angle (mine is a 16-35 but there are several options at least as good). I believe the R6 is the best camera for many types of photography (certainly weddings, which I don't shoot) but it adds relatively little to things that do not require working quickly. I believe there are two distinct groups that will be buying the R7. Some will be moving from the 7D and any of the crop sensor DSLR's. Others already own a full frame body, mirrorless or DSLR, and plan on using the R7 as an accessory to improve what their other camera might be lacking. In all honesty, I might say that the combination of an R6 and R7 ($4000) makes more sense than one R5 given the pixel density advantage of the R7 and the low light performance of the R6. I certainly agree that the buffer is a problem with the R7 but much of that is because of the large file sizes and overly fast frame rate. Shooting at lower than maximum frame rate and using CRAW will add to the number of images for a slight quality reduction. It is not THE answer but might just be AN answer for some users who have trouble limiting themselves to one second of machine gun spray and pray. Good video. We do have to remember that a camera that answers every need would not sell for $1500. R1? Not for me. If I had that kind of loose cash (don't forget the lens required to use it), I'd rather take a Pangolin trip.

      Hi,
      Yes that’s why I use an RP + 16RF + 50RF for travel, street, etc…
      I also have old EF 70-200 2.8L + 135 2L
I planned to go R7 for sport/wildlife as RP is limited for that.
But then last month R6 was only 300 more expensive than the R7… (2000-300 cashback in Switzerland for R6 VS 1400 for R7…)
If there was no cashback I would have gone for the R7

Another big advantage of an R6, R7 combo over a single R5 is that you have two cameras. Let's face it, sh#t happens! You drop that single R5 and you may be out of business. I think the R6, R7 combo makes a ton of sense on many levels. Of course, you could also have an R5 and 7.

Looked hard at R6 a few weeks ago and came to some of the same conclusions you did. Preordered the R7. I dont get money for pictures just use it as an excuse to explore outside taking mostly bird pics for personal enjoyment. A little lower quality means nothing to me. I shoot JPG. Plus figured money I save on camera can use on a lens in few years. You did a good job analyzing them.

R7 will be the right call for birds, for sure! Most of us don't have the scratch for an 800 5.6, which combined with the R6 would be great for birds. The extra reach and pixel density of the 7 will not only get you closer with less lens, but let you crop to boot!

Loved your video! R6 v R7 is exactly the question I'm wrestling with. I love both landscape and wildlife photgraphy including birds. I can't afford the R5 which we all would love. Both have their drawbacks but thanks for eliminating the R from the shortlist!. You were absolutely open about the fact you had not personally tested the R7. What you presented was a very informative video that was especially helpful for less experienced amateurs. I have also comapred the specs and know the implications of noise vs crop benefits etc. but still am undecided as I love the full frame sensor in my 6D Mk.ii.
One thing you missed was the EVF comparison. Some reviews are critical of the R7, but that is unsurprising given the price.
Leaning towards the R7, but good landscape lenses don't yet exist in RF-S mount.

There is a third option although it is the most expensive. I have both. I shoot sports and when I can't do that wildlife and occasionally landscapes, especially at night. That is a broad spectrum that cuts across the strengths and weaknesses of both. I don't spray and pray so the frame rate on the R7 is not an issue and I can report that it is superior in nearly every way to my 7D MII with two exceptions: 1) durability 2) option for a battery grip. Also, the 32.5 megapixels has been a big upgrade and it looks like 6400 ISO is doable on the R7.
I think your video will help lots of folks decide.
How good a value is the R7? I ordered it over the phone from the local shop expecting to pay 2100-2300 USD. I was shocked when they said 1500. Totally worth it.

I think saying that the r6 has a very small sensor and that r7 sensor is substantially larger, is quite poorly phrased statement. It's exactly the opposite, r6 has substantially larger sensor than r7, it's a full frame (36mm x 24mm) while r7 is aps-c, which is a smaller sensor (22.2mm x 14.8mm). What you wanted to say, I guess, is that r7 has more pixels than r6. But than again, r7 having more pixels, squeezed on a smaller size sensor, has a much much smaller pixels than the r6 (bigger sensor with less pixels meaning each individual pixel is much larger) which in turn effects light gathering capacity, hence r6's great low light performance and r7's poor low light (high ISO) performance.

    • @TheSafariExpert
      @TheSafariExpert  2 роки тому

Rovle, you’re right - perhaps I phrased it wrong. I didn’t, however, want to confuse the viewers with, well, pretty much what you said in your comment, so hopefully the important bit about how it affects quality came through.

Thanks Villiers, this is a well-though out analysis who should get which of the 2 cameras. And if my 70D had not nearly drowned last summer, I would now no doubt go for the R7. However I did get the R6 last September (and I got a great deal, paying about 500$ less than list price). So where I stand right now, it doesn't make much sense to trade in and a new R7 for the used price of my R6. For low light and occasional landscapes and nightscapes, the R6 is indeed awesome.
But I'm mostly shooting (small) birds .. so always hungry for more reach. And I'm often using the 2x extender with my 100-400Lii.
In this sense I'm waiting for someone to make a comprehensive image quality comparison between the R7 and the R6 with the 2x, because both get a FF equivalent of pixels on the bird as a ~80mpix camera would do (like maybe the R1 sometime).
When I make a next investment in my addictive hobby, should I get an R7 for cases when there is good light ? Or should I keep on saving in the hope Canon brings someday the patented 300-800L/8 lens ??

Hi Villiers. I am travelling to Kruger park in december/jan from new zealand. I am just getting into photography and purchased your beginners wildlife photography course. I was planning on using a 70-300 canon kit lense but now i worry i wont get good shots but the 100-400 is too expensive. Can you clarify this a bit more?

    • @TheSafariExpert
      @TheSafariExpert  2 роки тому

Gareth, the 70-300mm lens is not only a bit ‘short’ for wildlife in Kruger, but the quality of the photos are also significantly worse than the Canon 100-400mm lens, at least when it comes to the mark ii. If I were you, look out for a well-looked-after Canon 100-400mm mark ii lens. If it’s still too expensive, you’ll just have to use what you learnt in the course and make the most of your opportunities with the 70-300 🙂 Enjoy!

Great video, very helpful. With regard to the relatively low buffer size of he R7, could you slow down the fps rate, to say 10 fps, would that mean the buffer won't fill so quickley and so increasing he amount of time? I have a 7D mkii so would be happy with "only" 10 fps

Robin, I would assume so, but if it can only do 51 frames at 15 fps, I’m not convinced it’s going to do a lot more at 10 fps 🤔 We’ll have to wait and see when more people test it in the field.

I have the R6 and love everything about it. I’m thinking of getting a second mirrorless camera. When I upgraded to full-frame with the R6, I missed the reach I had with my lenses. Then I realized that my style of filming relied more on getting close to my subjects and get details rather than doing landscapes or wide shots. I think I would pick up an R7 as a second camera to replace my old DSLR, instead of buying a second expensive R6.

Hi there Villiers, Have you had access to an R7 since this recording? My dilemma, I am a part time photographer and thus seeking your advise. I purchased an R6 a year ago (game changer) and now only have one body, (Previous 6D and 5D mkIII) as I sold these two off to help the move to mirrorless. I desperately want to get back to a two body setup as my interest fields are wildlife and birds (Birds in flight), the hassle of having to change lenses and missing shots is something I miss dearly. The other factor, as always budget, I will have to stay with the EF lens line-up for a while yet and the question is; R6 and purchase a new R7 to go with it or look for a used R6 and keep a two R6 combination. The R6's are coming into the used market now at reasonable prices since the advent of the R6 mkII.
I own or have access to the following lenses; EF 16-35 f4, EF 70-200 f4, EF 100-400 mkII and a EF 600 f4 mkII my thoughts were the following while out doing wildlife & birds on a self drive in a wildlife destination.
    R6 & R7 Combo
    R6 EF 70-200 f4 attached and EF 16-35 f4 standby
    R7 100-400 mkII attached and 600 f4 mkII standby
    R6 & R6 Combo
R6 100-400 mkII attached and a 24-105 standby (will have to purchase used)
    R6 EF 600 f4 mkII attached.
The APS-C crop factor interests me for the additional reach of the R7, the image quality of the R7 a question though. I understand that low light is a challenge for the R7 but when that occasion arises I have the R6. Your thoughts please and of course anyone reading this with experience that can guide me in the right direction.
    Regards
    Derek

I was up to now a happy R6 owner, but I admit I was a bit surprised at the announcement of this new model at this price.
I wonder what is left to the R6 and I am not really convinced by your presentation
In your analysis, only the buffer argument seems to me to make a real difference in its favour.
I think you can not present the argument of ISO capacity as an a advantage for the R6.
What is the use of having up to 100.000 ISO on a camera ? Have you really ever produced a quality photography at 50.000, 80.000 ISO or more ?
And as a wildlife photographer, why don't you speak of the amazing R7 pre-shot buffer, which enables to capture photos half a second before the shot is taken ?

First of all, take a chill pill 😅 Secondly, you make the assumption that everyone out there is struggling to choose between camera models that cost more or less the same, but I can tell you for a fact that that’s not the case. I made this video specifically because so many of my safari clients were struggling to decide between the R6 and R7, without even knowing their strengths and weaknesses.
So before you urge us content creators to get a reality check again, perhaps consider the fact that not everyone thinks the way you do 😏

If you don’t have an R7 then why should I listen to you?

He's not even looking at us... his eyes keep staring at the external monitor when he's talking Dx that or he's reading a script x.x
