Canon R5 plus Canon 600mm 4.0 III for Wildlife. Once you tried Animal Eye Autofocus, you don’t want any camera without it any longer. What a great help, simply super!!!! For me the time of DSLR is over.

Wish you also compared the Canon 100-400mm II on the Canon R6 using a Canon RF EF adapter. Works great.
Also instead of eye detection, try animal detection on those fast moving birds.
Works surprisingly good. Only use eye detection on shots that are close enough for the eye to be detected.
    Nice video!

I have the original 1-4 too, I sent it to Canon to be tested/calibrated years ago just after I bought it, there was a big difference after. I think the trombone style of the Mk1 is prone to it banging as it moves from 100 to 400 if you have the locking collar set too loose. I think this causes issues and is the source of all the “soft lens” reports out there, especially when compared to the 400/5.6 prime. I’m not saying it’s better than, or equal too the 400 prime, just not the night and day as claimed by some.
My zoom definitely improved after I had it back from Canon, and I used to set the locking collar tight, effectively making it a 400 prime. If I was doing birds in flight I’d loosen the collar off ( this is where the trombone style shines in locating fast moving birds against a featureless sky ) then re-tighten it back afterwards. The 400 prime focuses very fast though, but has a much longer minimum focus distance then the zoom, all things a photographer needs to consider.
Canon need to offer this as a modern 500mm/5.6 like Nikon have with their PF. Nikon also have an ( excuse me if I’m not quite correct ) 80-400 and the 200-500 too, a great line up for wildlife guys. The 100-500 is F7.1 at 500mm, that doesn’t tempt me from my Mk1 500/4 IS, which is still phenomenal 😎

I have the 70-200 2.8 RF and can’t stand the white lens hood. It marks so easy.
I also went the R5 for the 18.7mp crop sensor mode. So the 100-400 II might be a better choice but my 70-300 seems to do the trick for larger animals.

Over-shooting is only an issue initially. After a couple of weeks, you learn the rhythm of the camera and can manage much less useless photos. I only have the problem of getting 2 photos when I want one now. I shoot exclusively in 20 fps mode and now love the completely silent shutter on my R5. Initially that wasn't the case, but I got used to it quickly.

Sorting the photos by file size can make looking through the photos much easier, because with similar background and the same ISO photos that are out of focus have a smaller file size because of the way image compression (even at RAW level) works. At least the smaller 70% will not be in focus and the photos with the largest file size have a good chance of being perfectly sharp.

cRAW ia definitely lossy, the fine noise grain detail is gone, making denoising difficult.

I switched from the 5D IV and 1Dx Mk II to the R5. It's really no contest. The R5/R6 have many advantages. Two of the biggest are eye focus and nearly silent electronic shutter. There are tons of instances where wildlife is distracted by shutter sounds. For sure budget is a consideration too; one can certainly not ignore that. But if you were to decide from scratch for wildlife photography, it's easily the mirrorless for the win IMO. YMMV of course. Nice review as well.

I shoot wildlife a lot and few other genre as well as a hobbyist. The extra features of mirrorless cameras didn't impress me as those are not indispensable for me. For exanple, animal eye AF. In reality, the beauty of any bird or mammal is present on its body or wings, not the eyes. Therefore, I don't need that feature. If I had that on my cameras, I would turn it off.
Can you tell me why I should spend/waste money on new-tech that I don't need? And why shouldn't I spend it for another African safari instead to shoot that fascinating action of a Cheetah chasing its prey!
I have no problens with people using mirrorless cameras. Just do not agree when they suggest those are better for my purposes as well. Because they aren't.

@@quazisanjeed6395, it’s hard to change your mind when it seems like you’ve made it up already, but I agree that it’s not necessary to change and spend money on new gear that already works for you. What I can say, though, is that the new mirrorless cameras have faster focussing, higher burst rates and less noise in low light, which (at least for me) has made the switch worth it.
I challenge you to have an open mind about mirrorless cameras. Perhaps one day you will own and use one and say, wow, this new technology is actually better than the older cameras.

I currently have a 5D Mark IV (My tele lenses include a Canon 300 f4 Prime and Sigma 150-600 Zoom). I am 99% sure I want to move to mirrorless but am torn (agonizing is more accurate) between the R6 or spending another $1400+ (plus more for CFe cards and a CFe reader) for the R5. My biggest concern is having 10MP less with the R6 compared to the 5D4 and whether the additional MP of the R5 is worth the rather hefty additional expense (remember it's not just the additional $1400 for the camera, but also the added expense of using CFe cards compared to SD cards). I know that more pixels on the R5 means I can crop in more, but in practical real-life situations, how often would that be an issue and how much difference will it really make in practical terms. Of course I wish the R6 had just a tad more MP (like even 24), which would make the decision a little easier. But going down to 20Mp from 30MP is a hard pill to swallow, if only psychologically, but at the same time justifying more than $1400 + CFe cards costs for the R5 is also psychologically difficult. I guess the real question would be how much I can still crop in with the R6 before seeing any noticeable degradation of IQ?

@The Safari Expert I have the 6D MkII + 70D and 100-400 II + Sigma 150-600 Sports. Both setups have great quality and I even love the grainy high ISO 70D pictures. But the problem has always been the focus. I lost too many perfect pictures due to focus issues. I like the 100-400 quality but it really lacks zoom. Sigma has enough zoom and the quality at 600 is very good despite all the derogatory comments on the internet. But Sigma size and weight are the deal-breakers, it's really hard to move around with that bazooka. I do lots of hiking but I took my 150-600 only once. The idea of having 500mm (700 with 1.4x extender) in a small body, more stabilization, the same cropped quality as a 70D, and a very good focus system seems to be a game-changer for me. I'll be moving to R5 + 100-500 soon.

The only problem I have with these comparisons is how cost seems to be irrelevant in their conclusion. The 100-500 costs the same as the 5DIV + 100-400 is ii combined. Obviously the RF series will be better, but at £2k more for a setup that most people won't have it's too much to swallow. As a point of interest, anyone that does own a 5DIV could opt for a direct trade for a new 90D which has much better reach and a faster FPS. Yes it's only an APS sensor, but it's about getting the shots not the gear.

I have this combo with the EF1.4iii and the focus area remains as big as without the extender. Heard this also applies on the EF2x. On the 100-500 the area does seem to get reduced with RF1.4x and even more with RF2x. but it remains larger than the focus area on the RF600/11 and RF800/11.
Focus speed reduces a bit with the extenders. I'm assuming the 100-500 reduces the focus area in order to maintain a higher focus speed and the EF glass may lack the electronics to agree such strategy with the camera.
For a larger and slower bird like a blue heron, the EF compromise might allow better composition without clipping the wings, for swallows the RF logic can be better.

The problem with any autofocus system is that there are many different settings and modes and people get lazy leaving to much to the camera. If with a DSLR you shoot the lion shown in the video, we all know that single focus point is the best option, you can focus on the eye, eliminate the "grab the Grass" situation and produce the stunning images. Withe eye detection AF, my reference is Sony as I have not used the Canon yet, same situation. People think it is magical, yet it is but also now flawless. It also grabs the grass, It also grabs onto the leopards skin when it looks like an eye. There is no replacement for camera skills and understanding how your camera and lens perform in different situations. Yes the eye detection and new focus systems are AI driven but as said not flawless. I recently used a Nikon D6 and the focus speed is something else. No it does not have eye, AF but except for fast flying small birds, was able to nail the eye with normal wildlife images every time even big birds like Herons, eagles etc in flight. Yes Eye AF is magical, however, not a fail proof system. I am sure the Canon 1Dxii is that same as the D6.

Why do you keep comparing these cameras when you are convinced that mirrorless is superior. Let everyone have their choices too. I find a dslr too comfortable in ergonomics and optical viewfinder. For all that investment very few people now a days are ready to pay good money inspite of delivering good photography.

    Why compare 5d with the new 6d replacement? 🤔 6d = r6.! 5d = r5.!

Villiam, there are MANY more wildlife photographers that use 5D4's than 6D's and the 5D4 and R6 are more comparable when it comes to price. These are two cameras that my clients are constantly weighing up against each other. If you ask me, the 5D4 and R5 are not a good comparison.

    • @TheSafariExpert

  • @simonepusceddu44
    @simonepusceddu44 3 роки тому +2

I think that the more technology goes on, the more boring and obvious photography becomes.
Let's be honest, we have reached the point where the camera does the photograph and not the photographer.
Before, skill was enough, now eye tracking, 2000 autofocus points, etc etc ...
Yes, it is true, technology can help solve many problems, but I am of the opinion that in this way you lose the sensations that a "difficult" shot gives you, the satisfaction that photography can give you is then lost.
This is just my point of view, of course.
