I’d argue that the goomba king is the first boss fight in paper Mario, the goomba bros are pretty much an enemy encounter but slightly stronger. Same thing with the hammer bros, I never considered that a boss in super Mario rpg. I’d argue a lot of these are just enemies. Great video though, I MISSED YOU
That is debatable and I could see that being it...but ngl it would probably land like only 1 or 2 spots higher, its not much better.

Honestly goomba king is even worse than goomba bros imo you Just use a hammer once to kill all of the goomba bros and after that you Just jump on 1 target
Correction: Smoldergiest actually has 3 attacks, not 2.
I personally just think the goomba bros is worse then smoldergiest. I consider getting a perfect dodge on them to snuff them and being punished for failing to meet the condition to be more fun than the goomba bros.

fun fact: When I was a kid and played BIS, I could not for the life of me get the Inhale mechanic to work in the sea pipe statue fight, so while I beat it, the only way for me to damage it was through counter-attacking during its turn

Even though he barely talks about half of them.
It wasn’t showcased here because I think when the attack finished mario’s hp was at 0, but for the petey fight in paper jam when he grabs and eats you he actually keeps you in his belly. I just think it’s interesting the first boss has a move that can temporarily remove a party member from battle and a little funny with how it’s done too. I don’t remember if you have to just wait a turn or two or attack him a certain amount of times to get them out of petey’s belly tho.

I didnt even notice how often in the early game it was tutorial city, i was enthralled with the whole story from the jump and i really like Luigi and the characters, barring Starlow, are super fun!!!

12) As a dream Team Fan... I do get why it's the worst. I wish it was better. Though, I feel like Dreamy Mario is also a first boss in its own right.
11) Goomba Bros is part one while Goomba King is part 2 of the boss fight.
10) Hammer Bro Duo (SMRPG) I like this battle. It's a basic boss, but it works. You do have only Mario, which makes sense.
9) Kamek 1 (I think Bowser Junior 1 technically also counts as the first boss)
8) at least he gets harder in later battles.
7) Tolstar is decent
6) yeah... This TTYD boss is disappointing. i wish the blooper was a unique Blooper enemy.
5) L33T Hammer Bros is a tough battle and one I remember struggling.
4) Morton Tough! Morton Strong! Morton MorTons!
3) Origami King above TTYD (I am happy for that.)
2) Petey Piranha has one the eat attack if the bros attack I struggle to dodge.

This boss is actually why I dislike the boss music in this game. I wish the boss music was slightly different for Bowser and it changed during the bros segment of the Bowser boss fights. Original and Remake don't even do that.

Honestly I agree with a lot of these takes though I actually completely forgot about Smoldergeist. I genuinely thought Dreamy Mario was the first boss lol. I think the fight is ok but it’s a bit of a weird choice for a first boss. I think the gimmick of dodging successfully to be able to attack would be really cool if it was just a bit later on in the game, especially since your options are so restricted this early. Personally Paper Jam Petey is my favorite gameplay-wise. All the different attacks you mentioned really keep it interesting for an early-game fight!

Great to see you back. I was wondering where you've been. Here are my thoughts on this list:
Smoldergeist (DT) - I'm honestly surprised this landed at the very bottom. Like, yes, if you fail dodges, you may have to spend a turn jumping to extinguish the fire, but I actually always thought that was a clever way to reward dodging. Plus, you only take 1 damage from doing so, which is barely anything, even at the start of the game. Also, the fact that you can prevent extinguished Smoldergeists from reigniting if you attack them adds a bit of strategy, as you can choose to either focus down one of them, but have the others reignite, or split your damage between two to prevent both of them from reigniting. It's not a super interesting fight otherwise, but I definitely don't think it's the worst. Also, knocking it this hard for the tutorial seems a bit excessive to me. Like, you can very easily skip it and it doesn't even take very long.
Goomba Bros (PM64) - Yeah, this one is pretty lame. Paper Mario's Prologue in general kind of sucks gameplay-wise due to the lack of action commands. This is probably what I would've put at the bottom.
Hammer Bros (SMRPG) - I've only played the SMRPG remake once as of now, so I feel I can't say a whole lot about this one. Your reasoning for its placement makes sense.
Kamek (PMSS) - Not much to say here either. I agree with the points you made.
O' Chunks (SPM) - I do like how this fight encourages you to use Thoreau, as it's the pixl you just got (although I think it's pretty lame that Thoreau still cheeses all the later O' Chunks fights).
Tolstar (M&LSS) - A typical first boss. It works fine enough but isn't as interesting as some others. Your placement makes sense.
Blooper (TTYD) - Pretty much the same situation as Tolstar. A first boss that works fine but isn't super interesting.
Leet Hammer Broz (PiT) - I like this one. Yeah, Fire Flower can pretty easily incapacitate them, but you do have to get kind of lucky for that to happen. Plus, if only one is burned, the other starts using the more difficult hammer throwing attack, so it does come with some risk. Still not super interesting, but almost no first boss is.
Morton (CS) - I think you made some good points here. However, I'm just not a big fan of the "use this specific thing card or die" system that CS uses. and yeah, the fact that he only does 1 damage after the thing is used is pretty lame. Like, he's still got his shell attack, why not use that, Morton?
Earth Vellumental (TOK) - I haven't played TOK, so I have no comments about this boss. I will say, the fact that you knocked Smoldergeist hard for an optional tutorial, when you knocked this less for a mandatory tutorial is a bit odd to me.
Petey Piranha (PJ) - Paper Jam has great boss fights, even at the start of the game. Enough said. Also, I feel the tutorial is warranted because the Paper Plane Guard is a completely new concept to the series. I guess it would be nice if it was skippable, though.
Sea Pipe Statue (BIS) - I definitely agree with your top two picks, but I would probably swap them. While I really like how this one introduces the idea of Bowser's inhalation, which is very important for later fights, and does test most of your abilities (Not jump defense; the Stone Blooper doesn't have any attacks that requires you to dodge by jumping), it doesn't have the same level of variety as Petey Piranha. The Statue itself has only one attack, and the Stone Blooper only has three, one of which only happens after enraging it enough, and another that is unavoidable. Since I feel the Mario & Luigi builds its entire battle system around dodging, I can't say I'm a big fan of unavoidable attacks, but at least you can still win without inhalation if you really want to avoid that forced damage, I suppose. Ultimately though, even if I wouldn't put this at #1, it's a very solid #2 for me.

A lot of these I’d call mid bosses. To me, the first true boss of Mario RPG is Mack, The Goomba King for Paper Mario, Swiggler for Pit, Fracktail for SPM, Megasparkle Goomba for SS, and Dreamy Mario for DT.
The list would be VERY different if those were on the list I will say, well maybe not Mack and the Goomba King, but yeah those would shift the list like crazy

Id consider mack more a major boss fight then the first boss fight. I think the crocodile counts as a proper first boss fight. if you dont level enough to let mario learn fireball the croc has a good chance of knocking you out that early in the game.

@@ShroobInvader ah ok. Also get why Bowser (Paper Mario), Bowser (SS), Bowser (PIT), Baby Bowser & Bowser (BIS) aren't on the list. That's too much Bowser. But, what about Crump, hell, GUS?! I get Gus is optional, but, he can be fought right before Blooper.
@@luxrayblast I think it’s bc Gus doesn’t really need to be fought until Chapter 3 and even then it’s still optional as you can just pay him to pass. Also the battle kinda counts as a tutorial at the beginning of the game bc it teaches you that you can run away without shame in situations where it is very unlikely that you’ll come out victorious

interestingly, Smoldergeist in a nerve mode challenge w/no healing, no equips/Badges and no bros/Luiginary attacks
(cept the fact you're required to get the +1 Badge Effect Stock for both bros at level 8 for the Massifs.)
and only +1 level per area arc(essentially +2 levels, 1 level per boss, due to there usually being 2 separate bosses for each part of an area.)
Smoldergeist actually becomes.. kind of a threat but barely. yet dat 18 damage's no joke. with these conditions, since it does about 18 damage via its Fire Ring/Single Fireball toss on hard, enough to 2 shot or 1 shot both bros, if you took damage prior to the fight, w/being unable to heal, except for the optional tutorial heal. 🤔
I think is interesting that it punishes you for not dodging via them being lit up, forcing you to take damage or wait.
its actually a neat concept that deff would've been slightly more deadly,
if it weren't for the fact you can't die to jumping on spiked/flame enemies in Dream Team-
I can deff confirm that Torkscrew's by far most deff the 1st true brick wall in Dream Team in a nerve mode/low-level no-equips and no bros attacks challenge,
and thats only due to its underground Drill attack that Intentionally goes slower, on top of it having a massive 656 hp that early 💀

I wonder how well dream team would of done if the fake mario fight was considered the first real boss fight instead of the poltergist. since that fight doesn't have a tutorial in the middle of it.

@@ShroobInvader I played it before but I never beat it. I got stuck on the last Midbus fight because I was under leveled and I didn’t feel like grinding so I just gave up💀. I did beat the Bowser junior side mode though ironically enough. I’ve been meaning to restart the game so I can actually beat it this time

The main decider seems to be how early on in the game the first boss actually takes place.
That definitely would be part of it for sure
I think Sea Pipe Statue takes the longest to get to. You have to go through the prologue in Dimble Wood and Peach's Castle, Trash Pit, Cavi Cape, and Plack Beach to get to him.

Blooper may be the first required boss in TTYD, but you can fight the optional boss Gus, before fighting Blooper. Gus has more HP and Attack with 20/3 over Blooper's 12/1. Plus he's not a tutorial, as Crump plays that role.
That’s true but because it’s optional it didn’t feel like it should be on the list. It’s solid but it would be basically right where blooper is

personally i think smoldergeist deserves some more credit, if you consistently avoid their attacks it goes by a lot faster especially since you can counter the extinguished attacks. I'd put it above sticker star kamek

@@ShroobInvader and here's an idea they could of done to add a second attack for Leet hammer bros, Dunk bros!
how it'd work is one hammer bro would dunk the other and the dunked bro goes under one of the babies and when the light on their antenna lights uop, you jump to counter the attack as the hammer bro comes up and takes damage as you land on him, could even re-dunk them in the process and they go back to their position while dunked

I will correct you, Sticker Star's first boss is the Bowser Jr. fight.
Only way to defeat Jr. is by using the scissors, which the Toad just gave you.

I count that as a kind of tutorial boss to be honest. I would probably have it second to last but yes it would be worse than the goomba bros I agree.
smoldergeist isn’t really considered a boss fight its just a fight with normal enemies, the real first boss of dream team is Grobot
I don't even agree with the 2nd part of the statement tbh. If people do not consider Smoldergeist to be the first boss, it HAS to be Dreamy Mario then. Grobot is way too late into the game at that point and while yes it is definitely a more normal boss, Dreamy Mario is definitely a boss before that

We should all just collectively say Smoldergeist is the badge tutorial or miniboss and just ignore it. Dreamy Mario is just leagues better anyway and it feels more like a boss rather than just some common enemies that put up a one damage counter if you fail a dodge.

I understand that Kingdom Battle is not a normal Mario RPG. but Sparks of Hope has many more RPG elements than the First game. more than the modern paper mario trilogy combined. And both Mario + Rabbids games have a lot of good and creative bosses so it's a shame they aren't in this video
