3:38 ... Whitefish! In the middle '70's there was a small trend among students at Whitworth College in Spokane to hop a freight train and ride to Whitefish, look around and then hop a returning freight train to Spokane... 🤯 ... all fun and games until it became known that freight hoppers would occasionally end up dead or severely injured/beaten/robbed/etc and that sort of killed the "romance" of "riding the rails"...
this entire endeavor - bike trip/journal/artwork - is amazing and wonderful... i love how your watercolor sketches reflect your experiences along the way -- landscapes, birds! --you were so connected to what you were seeing. thanks for showing us everything! (i once hitchhiked with a friend, from Seattle down the Oregon coast. it was a very long time ago but i remember how beautiful the Oregon beaches were)
Thank you so much Alice! That sounds like an amazing trip, we met a lot of people who were hitchhiking in campgrounds and they were definitely on a similar wavelength to us haha. Oregon is so beautiful! I grew up in California but never spent much time there, I really want to go back!
Just found your UA-cam channel and binged everything! I love keeping an art/travel journal and this inspired me so much. Absolutely loved watching this one!
Ahh I love that! Thank you so much, I love my art journals, keeping one really changes how you see the world! Glad you enjoyed & welcome to the channel! ✨
ah i loved this video and this sketchbook so much!! i absolutely love it when people use sketchbooks as a kind of visual journal / notebook of their travels. it reminds me of old school explorers who would document their journey in little sketches and field notes. so cool. also "i brought way too many art supplies" is so relatable hahaha every trip/hike/camp ive ever been on i think ive taken more art supplies than what i need 😅
Thank you so much Bri! Haha I always overpack especially when it comes to supplies! And I looove visual journals/ the old school explorer vibes. Glad you enjoyed! ✨✨
okay I know this was a year ago lol but just now watching this video and I really want to go buy a bike and ride around my towns trails, v much inspired me 🫶
I’m a cyclist and an artist so this was SUPER inspiring! It looks like it was an incredible trip, and your painting sketches are so soothing. Although that 4 mile bridge sounds absolutely terrifying 🫣😆
wow love this video so much!! the sketchbook pages are amazing but also love the storytelling component and the clips you included from the actual tour! so rad :)
Your travel sketchbook pages look really nice and I love how I'm drawn towards both your work and the atmosphere of the trip. It sounds like you had such a great time and the environment looks so wonderful! It also inspires me for my next trip through Europe. I want to take my sketchbook and paints along and capture it as well :)
I’ve been following your videos and Patreon for a while. I just came back in time to watch this… I grew up on San Juan Island! So glad it could be a place of inspiration and healing for you. Thanks for all the fun inspiration.
How crazy life is. I’ve been through a cancer as well during the pandemic and all I was dreaming about by that time was traveling. In three weeks I’ll be roadtripping from Seattle to California and I can’t be happier. Looking for sketchbook inspo I stopped by your video. Hope you are healthy and safe, cheers from Barcelona
Thank you so much! I was trying to figure out how to tell the story for so long but this is the way that made the most sense to me- it was great fun to revisit these memories ✨ Glad you enjoyed it!
What a delight! Your story is so powerful, and your trip sounds amazing. Your sketchbook is such a treasure to capture your memories the way you did. I would love to try making my own sketchbook someday 😃
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! You definitely should- it’s easier than it seems! Sea Lemon has some great videos here on UA-cam and that’s how I learned!
What an amazing and incredibly inspiring adventure! I definitely hope to fit in more bikepacking this year - last year was my first trip and we cut it short because bugs. I have now added another trip to my bike packing/touring bucket list - the Olympic Discovery Trail look absolutely stunning!
What an amazing experience. The Coast is gorgeous and I'm from Idaho. I would love to see the art kit you packed for this too trip even though you said its too much. You should check out the Art Tool Kit. How did you deal with days or times if you didn't feel well? If I could be in half the shape wow!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m coming to the end of my own treatments and this whole endeavour is very inspiring to me. I would love to find something creative and adventurous to mark then continuation of my own journey
Being at the end of something like that can be a huge transition and such a strange place, but congrats for making it to the end. I hope you are able to do something that helps you move forward ♥️
Incredibly cool! My partner is getting really into cycling and wants us to do a bike tour together. Seeing your process/journey as an illustrator myself is super inspiring. Such a neat look into your sketchbook and experience.

Can I ask what you used to draw those wiggly black frames around your art? The variation in line thickness is amazing, so much character!
Thank you! I believe they are done with a black Tombow Dual Brush Pen!
