  • Last fall, I took a trip out to Elyria, Ohio to go in search of old ruins that lie hidden down in the Black River gorge, nestled right in the downtown area of the city. Down by the East Falls, not far from the Elyria Police Station, lies the nearly-century-old remains of a short-lived hydroelectric power plant operated in the early 1920's by The Elyria Milling and Power Company. It provided electricity to parts of downtown Elyria, was then was torn down (mostly), and now the remnants lie crumbling at the bottom of the falls, just waiting for "the Big One" to come through and snap the rest of it into the river. Festooned with graffiti and slick with moss and wet sandstone, the power plant ruins proved an amazing look into the Elyria of almost 100 years ago, and the falls juxtaposed within the ruins were well worth the slow scrabble across the rough terrain! Enjoy the beauty in the wreckage!

I always went to the west falls. Where does the East falls form? Under what bridge? Beautiful footage. So much history down there.
