      I was pretty impressed by how clean it got. That was kind of the selling point for me. I have been looking for an amp with headphones, but this thing has a headphones out, and it sounds good clean, and dirty. This video sold me on this pedal!

      It's a great pedal, I'm really glad I found it. I've recently acquired a Dude pedal (for a bargain price) for use on a 2nd board for direct to PA usage. It's also excellent and very much in the same vein, though I still prefer my Small Fry with my amp.

      Hi, thank you! I really like the Greenback that Redwirez lets you download for free. For a recording like this, I'm using the 421 mic model, for live use I like the R121 (I'm assuming that's a Royer?) as it lops off even more high end out of the PA speakers. On a recording the ribbon can be a bit boomy, even at closer proximity, but very smooth. More specifically I'm using the 421 'cone edge' 6 inches back. They give you 1 inch increments back to 6 inches and then bigger jumps up to 12 inches I believe. Here's a link for you to try them...redwirez.com/pages/the-marshall-1960a-ir-pack Thanks for the comment! Great model of the amp by the way. Loved the way it accepted pedals, I thought that was a standout. Cheers, Ben.

    As someone who uses a lot of fuzz, I was impressed by the 20 quid model! LOL! The TC Jims 45 has some great sounds. I will definitely be messing and playing with the JTM45 models in my Quad Cortex today.

    • @BenFletcherGuitar
      @BenFletcherGuitar  Рік тому +2

      It's a surprisingly good sound for a cheap unit isn't it?! It's not really one type of fuzz though, it's tough to say exactly what it is. If you were going for a particular style of fuzz, I guess it's maybe not so useful. I haven't tried a Quad Cortex yet, though it seems to sound great in videos. How do you find it? I saw Sonny Landreth using one in a video, which is fairly surprising given that he was running it in to his Dumble, ha! It was a hometown gig for him, so maybe he's thinking about using it for fly dates and was trying it out.

      Thanks, man! In the clean example I played, there's nothing in front of the Jims 45, just the guitar. A modeled amp completely dry, sounds a bit unnatural to me, since the room itself would give you something back if you were playing a real amp. I don't know, it just sounds odd to me hearing something so dry that could never be that way in real life. Do you use it that way in a gig? I couldn't play on that type of sound, I think I'd just leave the venue humbled by my lack of ability if that was all there was to play on! Ha!

      I do a solo gig, and would love to use my PRS Silver Sky SE for part of the gig, doing electric fingerpicking, blues, etc. (The rest of the show is acoustic/electric, and I plug that guitar Larrivee LV03-RE directly into the PA). Plugging the Silver Sky SE directly into the PA is a non-starter … I don’t get the clean, full, rich, kinda ballsy sound that I’m looking for, no matter the settings on the guitar or PA channel. Thinking the JIMS 45 would be the answer: Silver Sky SE>JIMS>PA.
      Yes? No?
      Current PA is a 10-/11-year-old Fishman SA220, so it’s designed to create a great acoustic sound, and it does. Saving my pennies to upgrade to a EV Evolve 30m or 50m, which will give me a solid subwoofer and a lot more power.
      Thanks for the input and the review. It was really helpful.

      @@DLFlannery No worries, glad you found it useful. You have some nice gear there. The Jims 45 is a great product and would work well for me as an electric lead player on most of my gigs. I took it on a gig and used my Small Fry Burn Unit in to just the 'normal' channel and it was a nice sound to play on. I used it in conjunction with an external IR on the gig, because the original IR the Jims 45 shipped with was pretty poor. Interestingly they've changed the stock IR now. I think by popular demand. I'm not sure I'd go for this particular pedal if I wanted to play clean (Is that what you're doing?). Don't get me wrong, it'll do it, but there are way better options out there for clean stuff in my opinion. I'd be looking at a Dream 65 by UA or a Tonex. A little more pricey unfortunately, but if you've got a good PA and a good guitar, then maybe go the whole hog if you can run to it. My PA is a pair of QSC K10's. I use an Allen and Heath Zed10FX. At around a 1000 watts (apparently) the QSC's are pretty loud (though you can hit the limiter if you slam a tonne of bass through them) but importantly for me, they sound super smooth for electric drive tones. I know the trend is stick PA's but I've yet to play through one that didn't make my drive tones fizzy. I've played through lots of them, as I don't always get to use my own PA. I think it's the tiny drivers being so shrill and the sub being so low, there's a hole in the sound where a guitar should be! Anyway, don't discount a traditional PA speaker and small analog desk, they take some beating. Hope some of this rambling helps!

    • @DLFlannery
      @DLFlannery Рік тому +2

      Yeah, I'd like a clean, deep, clear sound. No distortion.
      Maybe the Deluxe Reverb 65 pedal from TC Electronic is a better option? Any experience with that?
      Thanks.

    • @BenFletcherGuitar
      @BenFletcherGuitar  Рік тому

      @@DLFlannery Unfortunately I can't help you there, I haven't tried that one. I sometimes do a solo blues gig on electric too and I also want the same clean deep sound you're looking for. Something that can fill the room without getting mushy or distorted. It's REALLY hard to find digitally. Conversely I find it can be difficult to get from a lot of amps too, as they lack the bottom end that fills a room like a PA speaker can. My best solution would be to run a real amp in to an IR loader. That way you're sort of getting the best of both worlds, it's just more stuff to bring. If you solve the dilemma let me know, because I'd be interested to try it for myself!

    Good review. In doing some research about the IR issue you raised, I found this quote you may find of interest from page 8 of the manual "Congratulations on your purchase of the JIMS 45 PREAMP pedal. In this unit you will find a true-to-life digital simulation of a 1965 Marshall JTM 45* tube amplifier ...". But on the topic of the IR alas your affirmation seems correct. Shame.

    • @BenFletcherGuitar
      @BenFletcherGuitar  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! Yes, I thought it was probably a JTM 45 model, I just found the online blerb I showed in the video and the fact the guy in this video...ua-cam.com/video/YwGVVELd61I/v-deo.html says 'plexi style' at 1:52...confusing and enough of an excuse to do a comparison between the pedal and the amp I had available that was closest to it. It's just a bit of fun really and I did flash some text on screen to say it isn't a fair comparison. The IR thing is indeed a shame, but one of the comments in the comments section of my video is from a guy called Jose, who is part of the development of this pedal and TC's IR loader. He's in that video actually ^. If anyone can do it, he can! Let's hope it's something TC want to implement at some point. Thanks again, Ben.

    How did you wire the marshall to use the IR? Did you use a loadbox? Which one? Was the IR captured with tube power amp? I'm asking because I found the real Marshall lacking presence, which is normally added in the poweramp section.

    • @BenFletcherGuitar
      @BenFletcherGuitar  11 місяців тому

      Interesting, I've never heard of presence being added in the power amp section. Is this something you've found yourself, how did you work out where the treble was coming from? I think this is one for Jim Lil! Haha!

    • @jansukdol617
      @jansukdol617 11 місяців тому

      It depens on negative feedback in the amp basically. I have an amp similar to JCM800 and there is some difference between tube power section and when I use solid state power amp instead. I'll try to upload the findings.
      That goes for undistorted power section. When the power amp distorts like in the SV20H, the effect is much greater, because of how the output transformer interacts with the speaker. There is some video on YT where Quilter explains and demonstrates what's happening when tube power amp distorts running into speaker vs resistor load. He calls it sizzle :)

    • @BenFletcherGuitar
      @BenFletcherGuitar  Рік тому +1

      @@jacobmller5278 Thanks very much, Jacob! Yes, that's what I did throughout this video. The problem is that the loader I have doesn't have an off button. So if I put together a board for use direct to PA, I'd have to have some kind of line selector pedal to bypass the loader, otherwise I'd have to re-wire the board every time I wanted to use an amp. Since I flip flop frequently between direct and amp usage, that would become tiresome. Alternatively I'd have to have two additional pedals on a pedalboard simply to sidestep not being able to load an IR in to the Jims45, which is such an easy thing for them to offer. I COULD use it with the IR loader though and that is how I ran it when I used it on a couple of gigs, which I have to say did sound good. Cheers, Ben.

    • @jacobmller5278
      @jacobmller5278 Рік тому +1

      @@BenFletcherGuitarhat makes totally sense to me and I understand you are aiming for TC to offer more features for IR options which would be great. The IR model simply has too much impact on the overall sound experience and that is also why I have always used the direct out (non-cabsim) on the ampworx. One of the applications that I love about the ampworx is to use them as a preamp directly in to my FX return; this makes my fender deluxe amp sound like a marshall or an old fender Combo Deluxe or even heavy metal.
      Why are you so Shure that this one is not a JTM45?

    • @BenFletcherGuitar
      @BenFletcherGuitar  Рік тому +1

      @@jacobmller5278 Absolutely, the IR has such a huge impact on the tone, which is why I was surprised they didn't let us all just choose one we like and install it, that way everyone would be happy. I saw a lot of people in comments sections and forums also lamenting the inability to change the internal IR. Yes, I thought it worked well as a preamp in front of a clean amp like I used at the end of the video. I'm sure it would work really well in to a loop too. I would have done that, but I've never had much success with using the DV's loop like that for some reason. I'm not sure that the Jims45 isn't a JTM 45, it probably is, but I thought the literature TC have posted about it is slightly confusing in that regard. Did they model it on Jimi's amp? I doubt they had access to that, so is it based on the amp his was based on? So does that mean they used a JTM45 starting point or a Plexi, or do they think those are those the same thing?! I just thought it was odd they were saying his sound specifically, which most people would associate with a Plexi I would think but then adding the number 45 to the name. It also gave me an excuse to compare it to the SV20H which wasn't a million miles away. Interestingly the pedal had more gain and was more aggressive, the opposite of what you'd expect if it was a JTM45 model.
