Grid Journal of Persistence

- This one was a doozy! It was a whole big deal this time around. It felt really difficult today. It has also been quite a challenging week here at home, so that probably had a lot to do with it. Regardless, I'm glad I stayed with it and really do like a handful of these tiny abstract paintings. Funny how it's only paint and yet it can feel like an impossible task at the same time sometimes, isn't it?
The white pen I used is the Pentel Presto correction fluid pen here: amzn.to/3tVPotA

Major epiphanies coming through for me today from watching your video, Jackie! My heart rate accelerated when you introduced the gelatos and stabilos...yes...I got scared 😱! In my mind, I thought "Oh No!! TEXTURE! Another thing to control...how will it interact with color and collage." But as you worked through each grid, I started thinking how much this process mirrors our daily lives. We all have a background canvas we apply our actions to and if we don't like them, we just change them until we do...adding, choosing, rearranging and discarding bits and pieces until we LIKE the way it looks overall. So Inspiring! LIFE, BRING ON THE GELATOS!!! Lol!!😂
Oh this makes me so happy! Great metaphor! Thanks for sharing! ❤️❤️❤️
The red, teal and celadon are making me so happy! You have an innate sense of color, that combined with your playful approach to art making (and your marvelous sense of humor) makes for a great video. Brava!
Hi Nancy! That’s so nice of you to say - thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Hackie! You are the best!❤❤
Thanks so much! ❤️
The black and white made all the difference. Thank you for the close-ups at the end. I loved every one!
Thanks Kate! ❤️❤️❤️
when you show the close-ups at the end, they're all amazing. the ratio of detail and texture to larger areas of color really works. i could imagine almost every one of them as a large abstract painting on canvas. i think i might have made this exact comment on a previous grid journal video of yours... :)
Haha! Thank you so much! I do love imagining them as giant abstracts too 😍❤️🤗
Thank you! Not a color scheme I would ever think to use, so expanding my horizons. Would love to see the grid journal idea using the Woodys for landscapes!
Thanks for letting me know - that will be coming in the not-so-distant future! ❤️
Much love ❤️ 🙏
Thank you! ❤️
I love this! As an artist, I find myself constantly trying new mediums and ideas and I have to try this. It will be a challenge! Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m so glad to hear it! Let me know how it goes! ❤️❤️❤️
Learning a lot from you. You inspire me to start trusting and playing more.
I’m so glad to hear it, Will! ❤️❤️❤️
So nice to find you. You are lovely woman! Excited to learn from you.
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
I had the same 'oh-oh where is this going' feeling but you're right about don't stop at ugly! I really liked several of these by the end. Success!
Do you know whot kinde a journal she using. And whot is that vibrant red. Is it florescent??
Thanks so much!
Hi! It's fluorescent red from Novacolorpaints.com and I'm using this sketchbook: amzn.to/3QD4eNg ❤️
I love how these turned out😊
Thank you! ❤️
So enjoyed watching your video, it was so inspiring. I created a card for a friend using the red, black and a green gray. Thank you😊
I’m so glad! ❤️❤️❤️
weird fact...michael nesmith from the monkees was the son of the woman who invented white out. she made a fortune! great work jackie!
Thank you so much for posting this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had to learn the hard way about how different water soluble media behave with various wet media. Love your work and love your vids!
I tend to learn most things the hard way 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Love the little ones as always & I would never ever use fluorescent red (or even red for that matter) which is one of the ways watching you always imparts new information (and courage) -- somehow certain colors have become like foods I don't like and therefore never eat -- I need to see demonstrated over and over what it might actually mean to *use* those colors and realize they can actually be pretty amazing -- loved the close-ups as well -- each of them is a world unto itself ❤🧡💛
I love this so much 😆❤️ Your description reminds me of how I used to feel about yellow ochre and quinacridone gold. I watched Jane Davies use quin. gold a million times and could’t figure out why she added it to her art which was otherwise brightly colored for the most part. The more I watched how she used it, the more it made sense to me… but not for art, of course. Until I tried it myself and played around with it and now it’s one of my favorite colors! Be careful, that fluorescent red might start growing on you…. 😆😆😆
Love them Jackie! Thank you for pushing through a challenging week to share this with us! ♥🤍🖤💛💙
You’re certainly welcome. Always happy to remind others (including myself) that the process is enough on its own sometimes. No need to put pressure on having something turn out pretty too. 😆❤️🤗
Thank you Jackie, once again a fantastic tutorial. I love and appreciate how you share your thought processes with us. It's very helpful to me and also makes me feel "normal" in my own.
That’s so good to hear - thank you for sharing it with me! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Jackie - I so enjoy watching you make this but find it a problem to make my own… but good going. Warmest. Jackie
Hi Jackie - you might find my free grid journaling made easy guide helpful! If you'd like to take a look, you can find it here: www.jackieschomburg.com/grid ❤️❤️❤️
I just love your abstracts!!
The large one behind you is so great!!!
I’m going to see if you did a video when you painted it!!
I love abstract art, but struggle sometimes because mine look too controlled, if you know what I mean!! Abstract art isn’t as easy as people sometimes think!!! ❤
Hi! Thank you so much! I DID make a video when I painted it - here it is: ua-cam.com/video/h3WrAFWAwDI/v-deo.htmlsi=dBMIQ6N8wobsmTgv ❤️❤️❤️
Abstract art is not easy, but it sure is FUN! ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart thank you!!!!
Good to know about the gelatos not mixing well with matte medium. I do love the rough, raw texture and of course your color palette is awesome! Thanks for sharing. 😍
Happy to help! Thanks so much, Trina! ❤️
This could not have come at a better time 👏👏👏. Thank you so much.
Oh I’m so glad! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm loving each one !❤
Thanks Kathy!
Really loved watching your process here. I definitely think that the addition of some black integrated the whole thing, and activated them individually. Really nice results, Jackie! Yeah, a grid template sounds like a great idea!
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing , it's so inspiring to watch your videos!🎨💖🌿
Thank you so much ❤️
Enthrallingly fabulous.
❤️❤️❤️
I'm doing grids tomorrow!!!!! I love the up close detailed photos. Thank you
Yay!! Have fun!’
O resultado ficou fantástico ❤ um bom exercício! Adorei cada um deles
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
I’ve wanted to audition some Amsterdam reflex acrylic inks that Blick gifted me with a purchase a few months ago. Seeing your fluorescent red peeking out attractively from beneath the layers gives me hope that my unlikely ink companions will have a chance to play soon. Thank you!
Yes! Go play!! ❤️❤️❤️
@@jackieschomburgart I even added a tube of Golden heavy body in fluorescent red to my cart today-things are gonna get wild on my palette soon!
YESSSS!! I’d love to hear how it goes!! 💪🏼🤗❤️
Ordered the grid template, thanks Jackie! You were going to add a link for the white pen you called a "correction" pen, but I don't see it. I'Am I simply overlooking it ? Great video, I love your compositions!
Oooooh! Thank you for the reminder - I knew I forgot something! 🤣 It’s a Pentel Presto correction fluid pen. I’ll add the link to the video description too, but also sharing it here for you: amzn.to/3u2kPm7 Thanks so much for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Jackie. Can you share the type of sketchbook you use? I really like the square format! Beautiful as usual.
Of course! Here’s a link to the Hand Book journal I use: amzn.to/3FQ1W8J
(Note: An affiliate link doesn’t increase the price you pay and a small percentage of the regular price goes to help support my channel ❤️)
I love you and your videos, the way you are and teach, you’re so authentic! I was wondering if you might do a video on large canvas? I’m working on 30” x40” and finding it really challenging after working on smaller scales. The large format is so much in my face even when I step back it gets overwhelming. Can you relate? Can you talk about it in a video?
Thanks for sharing your experience. Stay Blessed.❤
Great question! Changing scale makes a huge difference - often much more than you’d think. I do relate. I’ll add this to my list of video ideas - thanks! For now, I’d ask if you’ve done any intermediate sizes leading up to the 30x40” canvas…? You might find it helpful to make some interim pieces and work up a bit more gradually. So, starting with a 12”x12” canvas, next a 16”x16”, then 20”x20” and so on (not necessarily squares, that’s just where my head is apparently at right now 😆). It may help you acclimate easier. Intellectually, it doesn’t seem like it would help, but practically it can often help smooth out a big change in size ❤️
(Also, when I came to respond to your message I saw that somehow I had given it a thumbs down earlier - not sure how I managed to do that, but it was totally unintentional!
Thank You I hadn’t noticed it anyway!:-)❤
I need to try some neons, and fluorescent but it's a bit scary
I have an idea that might make it less scary. What if you add the fluorescent color first and then spend the rest of your time finding ways to cover *almost* all of the neon color up? You’ll still get the punch of the neon, but with a bit of a mindset shift, all you’re doing after step one, is painting how you normally paint. Just an idea… ❤️
What a great idea ❤
Amazing what size does to a piece or in this case pieces.
You’re asking what size these squares are? Each square is roughly 2”x2” 🤗
I don't recognize that vibrant red. Look glorious. Can you tell me whot kinde a journal do you using. Iam struggling to find quality but not so expensive journal for mix media. I could make my self but your format is wery interesting!! Thank you for shearing!
Hi! I use this watercolor journal by Hand Book: amzn.to/3FQ1W8J It’s not the least expensive option, but I find it to be exactly what works for me ❤️
Yes they really started to come together when you added black - not that I could have told you to do that; just saw they did 🙂
❤️❤️❤️
Love it. Say, is that acrylic paint?
Thanks! Yep, it’s acrylic 🤗
Yes well you might say its only paint (and) paper. Thats like telling a baker its only flour and water...🤔 😝
True. But at the end of the day, it really is just flour and water and eggs and sugar, isn’t it? If you mess up the cookies, you can always try again with another batch. 🤗 (yes, it’s oversimplifying, but the point is that if I made art that I liked once and then pushed too hard and “ruined” it… I can try again tomorrow with the same ingredients and can trust that if I made something I liked once, I’ll be able to do it again so all isn’t lost by “ruining” the first painting ☺️)
I'm trying to find the grid PDF you mentioned, Jackie. I have looked on your website but don't see it in there. Where can we find it? xoxo thank youuuuuuuuuu!!!
Hi! It's here: www.jackieschomburg.com/grid ❤️
Hello Jackie, I would like to know, do you use gelatos to do professional art work or just when you do exercices ? Because a friend tell me gelatos are not lightfast... Thank you
I rarely use them, but when I remember that I have them, they are fun to play with. 😆 Not sure about lightfastness, but I would recommend sealing them and applying a UV varnish to minimize fading ❤️
Is this for ideas for a large painting?
Hi! It can be for that, but I use it very loosely for inspiration - exploring color palettes or compositions that might be fun for a series of larger paintings. Separately, I also use it just to play. It's an easy, efficient way to spend an hour or 2 (or 6!) to make a complete mini-series 🤗
Hi Jackie,
I watch your videos and they are wonderful and very inspiring.
I see that you use a very special scissors.
Will you be so kind and tell me how are they called in English and if they are on Amazon? Looks like they make the cutting easier then regular scissors.
Thanks
🙏
Sara
Yes! I have arthritis in my hands/thumbs and use these because they are MUCH easier on my hands: amzn.to/3FJtmgu ❤️❤️❤️
This is what they are called: Fiskars Premier No. 8 Easy Action Scissors - 10" Spring Action Fabric and Craft Scissors 🤗
Ohh so do I …
Thank you so much.
Are they one size?
You made me very happy today 😘🙏
Just one size that I know of, but there is another option that I haven’t used personally: amzn.to/45WOevr
