18 Brilliant tiny masterpieces. You have such an intuitive knack for placement, contrast and composition. Yes it's easy to say that you just "glue it down" and maybe it feels like that for you. Watching you work through these was mesmerizing, each one taking shape piece by piece. I could see any one of them as larger pieces that would be brilliant. What a wonderful gift (for me) to work through the Sunday night blues! Be well!
Jackie, I’ve watched a couple of your grid journal videos. I think they’re just what the doctor ordered to help me get moving again. I appreciate your relaxed info-speaking, and am encouraged to think that with frequent play, I’ll discover what abstracts I’m meant to make. I’m weary of making representational art, and now am inspired by abstract works. Thanks for your examples & coaching!!
I haven’t done grids for years; I think you’ve inspired me to start again. When you’re testing the collage pieces I’ll be saying “Oh look, there, put it there” and, nope, you move onto somewhere else. As you say, we could all have identical supplies but would each create a unique collage. The hand of the artist always shows… As always, you’re an inspiration.
I took your grid journaling workshop and got so much out of it. Now I'm rewatching this to prep for teaching grid journaling to my summer camp kiddos this week. Thank you Jackie- You always inspire!
I love the results Jackie and this color combo is just beautiful. I started a grid journal inspired by you and I've got hooked. I cannot get hold of paint chips. But I have tons of collage papers and scraps that I use for collage. It really allows me to go wild. Sometimes the wild goes on to the 💩side, like that time I tried the yellows you're using here, which I absolutely love, but I had a bad day I guess :P and others I love the results. I love to devote a page to specific color combos, to try materials and colors that I don't really use, use some of those small tiny pieces of paper that I should have binned, you know... I usually do just 9 squares, 1 page, but it takes me hours! I find working on small formats quite challenging as the proportions and composition seem to be more important than when I use larger pieces of paper. I've also noticed that I tend to produce cool shapes that evolve from my initial asemic writing, and also 🤯... listen to this... I produce curvy abstracts as soon as I want to make something linear 🙃🤨 Looking forward to what you do next! Happy week. 💖
I love hearing all of this! Way to go!! I’m laughing about you making curvy abstracts when you plan to go linear - it’s so funny how our hands just do what they do even when our brain has other plans 🤣🤣🤣
Love the process and the final outcome, Jackie. The tree branch is genius!!! Thanks for always helping me look 'outside the box' regarding art tools and processes. I ❤️❤️❤️ that you're using paint chip cards...I thought I was the only one secretly hoarding them for crafting! I love to rubberstamp on them and diecut them for shapes to use in my artwork!
I am so happy to have found your channel. I have never made anything like this and am definitely going to try. I'm excited by the possibilities. Thank you again! The result is so fantastic and absolutely love watching you get there.
These are gorgeous, so much fun. Ive divided pages into 4, but will deffinately try the 2x2 grid. Just an observation, the far left bottom square had very little attention, but still a nice square, less is more sometimes 😊 Loved the video, thank you Jackie
love these. i always like watching your grid journal videos. so many ideas all at once. i’ve been struggling with the gel medium fingers lately too 😂😂😂 i have a stack of paint chips i should go revisit - all pink from when we were painting our bathroom, i think
I think of artistic style akin to our signature. It just is and we discover it as we go. As always, I loved this video Jackie. I always look forward to what you will do. This grid journaling has really set my exploration to a whole new level and I learn so much from these exercises. Thank you Jackie for your generous content.
I'm up late working on 4x6 wood grids listening to your video and it's so good to hear you express thoughts, unknowns, and what you love is what you do ... moods swings etc just so much of what I go through . Makes me feel more level in myself that it's not insanity it's just the process. And so thanks to you I'm working in grids and enjoying the process and discoveries! Thank you so much. ❤❤
Oh I’m so glad to hear that you’re feeling less alone in your thoughts. It is ALL a process. Just keep showing up and you’ll get where you want to go ❤️❤️❤️
It's always magical to me how everything changes and comes together when black and white come in. And I must have the nickel azo gold, so beautiful. Wonderful Jackie, thank you!
This is the best art grid video I’ve seen! Your voice is beautiful and your art is outstanding. Sharing your thoughts and instructions was very inspiring. I will subscribe and look for everything you do!
Love it when you do the small stuff -- lots of people do grid journals but I think you're the only one I've seen who treats each little pane as though it were a full-blown composition (which may be why it took you so long, especially since you didn't just grab the collage papers which would have made things a lot simpler). I've said this before, but I am *so* *grateful* to live in a time when abstract art is possible -- no one in the history of the human world has ever put those colors and patterns together before in that particular way -- I can understand why you take the time making decisions in this process because you are literally re-inventing the world. Wonderful as always ❤🧡💛 (P.S. You should have a t-shirt made that says "It's gloss medium.")
Thank you!! ☺️ “It’s gloss medium” 🤣🤣🤣 That actually made me laugh out loud - thanks for that! “You are literally re-inventing the world” 🥰🥰🥰 You have such a beautiful way with words ❤️❤️❤️
Good for you for drawing the squares! You can do this with markers or pencils too - every highlighters and a pen. Use what you have on hand. Keep showing up! 🤗
Its ironic how tiny abstracts offer such large amounts of learning. Ive done 6 at a time but keen now to try a twelver or 18 like you if im brave. Id like to use one palette but vary the materials/media on each set of six. It would be interesting to see the difference in the feel or look.
I have no idea how I ended up on your tutorials, but mannnnn am I happy I did! I was searching for gelli plate examples. New subscriber here! You rock ♥
Too funny we had a bedroom that needed to be painted right away. I went and got a bunch of swatches, long story short I ended up putting gesso on them and did a bunch of abstracts.
Love your videos Jackie! Also, I want to pass on the word that Golden has put out a ‘recipe’ for Nickel Azo Gold. 4 parts Transparent Red Iron Oxide to 1 part Nickel Azo Yellow. I haven’t tried it myself yet but on their video you can’t tell it apart from the original Nickel Azo Gold. 😊
AMAZING!! This is wonderful news - THANK YOU!! ❤️❤️❤️ I was literally sitting here in my studio thinking about how long I could hoard the remainder of my Quin. Gold 😆
Hey Jackie!! I love your grid journal videos! I actually tried something like this with my painting students. But I’d love to know where you get that specific sketchbook? The size is perfect. I’d really appreciate it if happen to know where you got it. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us ❤
These are one of the most favorite ones I’ve seen you do. Love the colors and shapes. Are the Neo1 colors more waxy than the II’s? They do not have oil, right?
Thank you! I don’t know offhand what materials are in each kind of neocolor crayon, but they must use at least a little bit of magic because both kinds feel identical to me when I use them 😂
Hey Jackie!! Quickie question: Is Nickle Azo Yellow a replacement for Quinacradone Gold? I know that makers couldn't find the pigment any longer to make our favorite, addictive color, but I never knew if the NAY was it's replacement. Love your grid art always!! I wish I could do it but I am stuck in 3" X 3". That 2" X 2" challenges me to almost the point of furious frustration. Have an awesome week and thank you so much for being willing to share your talent with us!!

Thanks, the videos are very informative and exciting. I wonder where to buy paint chips or to paint them?
Paint chips are the little strips of paint colors on paper that hardware stores have for house paint. They are free 🤗
I struggle the same way with my abstract landscape attempts. 🤦♀️
😆😆😆 I like to think we are just making abstract landscapes work for US ❤️
