- Amelia and JP VLOG 109: We've been in Cuenca for over a year and a half now and we're still finding new and exciting things to do, but we wanted to share our current Top 10 Things To Do in Cuenca Ecuador with you. These are the activities we did with our friends and family when they came to visit and they LOVED them.
We never get tired of exploring Cuenca and the surrounding areas. In 1999, Cuenca was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historic and cultural significance. Everywhere we look, there's something beautiful and historic to see.
I'm sure we'll be doing more of these "things to do in cuenca" videos in the future. As Amelia said in the video, we already have another list started. We're also going to do a video about the day trips you can take from Cuenca so be sure to Subscribe to our UA-cam Channel so you don't miss those!
For more details, photos and links to the places we visited, visit our blog post:

Hopefully you enjoyed our video, and if you did, please LIKE, COMMENT and SHARE it, and SUBSCRIBE to our UA-cam channel. ¡Muchas Gracias!

You both look very good & cool wearing hats! love your comments!
Thanks for sharing so many lovely aspects of Cuenca! I've partaken of the fantastic Mercados, (going several times last July; once I wanted to buy one avocado, but the gal said...three for $1...and I couldn't say no! Here in northeastern Montana avocados generally are anywhere from $2-3.50 for a small one... :-( ...and the amazing fresh fruit all year long is so affordable!)...the flower market (I made my own large bouquet of a variety of flowers for the price of $2!!! I couldn't believe it! ) I also hung out at Parque Calderon a bit, visiting with locals...I took the tour bus, recognizing places I'd read about before my visit. One thing you haven't mentioned and maybe because you go to bed early, are some of the musical venues. I was able to go to two free symphonies at Teatro Pumapongo (next to the Museo), and then three times I went to the Jazz Society Cafe above the Italian Restaurant, La Vina. Those are just two musical venues of the many out there in Cuenca. Thanks, Amelia and JP, I needed a reminder! It's going to be a long summer vacation with no travel plans this year! But, one must purge stuff before making a move to Cuenca.
Glad you enjoyed it! We’ve been to a couple nighttime music events but we can’t film them due to copyright issues. We’ll talk about the music scene in a future video 😊👍
I love you videos! Positive and adventurous! More please!🙏🤗
Thanks! 😊
LINDO....GRACIAS AMIGOS
The story I've heard about "Panana" hats is that during the construction of the Panama canal, the American builders imported the hats from Ecuador for their workers. The hats became known as panama hats at that point. In Ecuador they are known as sombreros de paja toquilla.
Es verdad :)
Thanks for talking so much about my country! Les amo!
I have really enjoyed your videos here and it looks like there is so much to see and do there! One of them came up on my list...the one where you explained why you left the states and went there. I don’t blame you at all for leaving. I too would love to leave the states. But I will probably go to Germany. My family is originally from there and you can easily travel to so many other countries from there. I am by myself in the world now, so it has been with some trepidation to think of traveling by myself.
Thanks for sharing this video about Cuenca i like mango and apples.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Need to add Cuenca to my list of places in Ecuador I've been to. Galapagos twice, birdwatching 12 day tour from Andes to Amazon.....that was a trumpet vine. Ecuador & Columbia are birdwatching hotspots...
Colombia
Excellent video!! Great information short and precise! I’m from Ecuador but I’ve lived in the USA for the last 16 years!! So I’m coming back to visit Cuenca and I didn’t have idea where to start! I’m so excited!
Great! Cuenca is an amazing city!
Thank you! I have just recently started watching your videos. They are very good, informative and entertaining. Best of all, it inspires a lot of curiosity to visit somewhere, quite honestly, I had not heard of.
Thanks Catherine! Glad you're enjoying the videos! 😊

Hola! Thanks for subbing!
@@AmeliaAndJP your welcme guys...keepm them videos coming.it will prepare me when i finally go back to visit my Dad's home city after 20 years,,muchass gracias..saludos desde chicago y las islas filipinas
Was at Piedra de Agua and was impressed with the services and the excellent and delicious food of their restaurant. Did the entire spa circuit and body massage.
We love Piedra de Agua! We think it's the nicest of the spas. We only wish it was adult only. We've been there a couple times with screaming kids splashing in the pool. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's not very relaxing.
@@AmeliaAndJP I agree with you on the kids making noise and disturbing peace at a spa.
Really good video. I just discovered you two. Your videos are professionally done. Look forward to seeing more.
Thank you guys for your videos!!
Thanks! Glad you like them!
Thanks for the information. Fresh pineapple for $1 is amazing. I’d never considered Ecuador.
I am really enjoying your videos. I like that museum on calle larga near the church, it has that fantastic jewelry store. I also enjoyed going shopping for crafts (espejos, bufandas y collares); the yogurt place, I loved the mora topping. Oh, and the bakeries... I also enjoyed people watching at the main park...I was there for only four days...
Thanks! There are lots of fun things to do here! 😊
If I weren't already sold on the climate, the architecture, the horticulture and the cost of living...the ruins would have done the trick! We have all those fruits--by different names--here on the other side of the SA continent, but many are hard to find outside of rural markets. I think I'll pass on the baths though. Just not my thing. Awesome video that I'm going to rewatch immediately.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Beautiful!
Great list! I think we will plan to do ALL of it, including hiring your driver! We are planning about a week there next mid-May 2021, before a trip to Galapagos. We'll be in touch for details and specifics in March and April 2021; including wfpb restaurants. Thanks for all your great info.
Super informative! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video as always. Craft beer is on the rise in Cuenca. That would be a nice topic for people who want to check out the city during the day and then grab a beer at happy hour.
Hi Craig! It was nice meeting you yesterday in Olón! I'm waiting for Amelia to finish her coffee so we can re-record our conclusion. It was too dark to record last night by the time we got back to Villa de los Sueños so we need to finish it this morning. Hopefully it'll be done soon!
Amelia And JP it was nice to meet you guys as well! If you would like to check out Oloncito your welcome to come by. I think it is the hidden jem of the coast. Brigantine1@gmail.com
I love your videos even though I am not the healthiest of eaters. Your Vidios are great to watch and both of you make what is little known about a little country very well known. I honestly enjoy watching your show. Good luck
Thanks! We love this amazing and diverse little country and it’s a lot of fun to film 😊
Maracuyá is for juice my friends.
Love your videos, great job 👌🏻
i was thinking the same, there are some fruits that we just use for juice and cooking, like my all time favorite "naranjilla" yummy!
Nice video. I have been here in Cuenca for 4 months and I agree with all of your choices except for the bus tour. I prefer to walk and have been up to Turi three times already. Construction is still going on atop Turi so the stairs are temporarily closed.
Great vid. loved the humming bird bit....cheers ~baden~ (Brisbane Australia)
Not even one word about Parque de la Madre? Not only does it have an excellent track for walking, jogging, or running, but also the statue of the great Jefferson Perez....the ONLY Olympic Gold Medal winner in the history of Ecuador! There is also a bust of his coach, the legendary Luis ChoCho. Perez won his Gold at the 1996 Summer games in Atlanta, GA. His event was the 20 Km race-walk. You can find a video of that event here on youtube. He also won Silver in Beijing, China, and had two 4th place finishes. He also won the World championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007... if I recall correctly. Oh, and the coach is still coaching!
Here is a link to the video of the 1996 Games. The announcing is in Spanish, of course.

Great info! We already have another list started 😊👍
You covered this so well I will get to Banos.
Thanks!
I thought that all Ecuador looks like Africa omg I was completely wrong that city looks very nice and peacefull
We thought the same thing but Ecuador is a wonderful country 😊👍
I'm so looking forward to doing some of these things. I may not be able to climb those stairs at first, but maybe eventually.
Won’t be long now, right?
@@AmeliaAndJP Six days!
Great video!
We did most of these things when we were there after the great US disaster of November 2016. We’re not at all religious, but the architecture of the cathedrals is truly incredible. We were confused about Baños, though, since there is another one to the north, closer to Quito, so we didn’t go. And we didn’t do the city bus tour because we had to save our cash for the Galapagos, since there are no ATMs on Isabela.
I love the little red and yellow flowers at Cajas - we took pictures of them too. :), but we didn’t see any llamas while we were there. :(.
Pumapongo is the best! Such a wonderful treasure for Cuenca and Ecuador!
Keep up the good work!
It is odd to have two towns with the same name. It would be like having two ski towns in Colorado named Vail. But this is Ecuador! 😁
Galapagos is on our short list. We’re excited to go there!
What "US disaster of November 2016" are you talking about? I saw nothing that year that could possibly be called a disaster. And from an economic standpoint, our economy is stronger than ever before.
Love the video and I am so glad you like Pumapungo I would like to live near there to begin our new life of walking everywhere and eating healthy. I love dragon fruit and can only get it here once in a great while at a hefty price. Curious about the mud baths in Banos too.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊 Amelia likes the mud baths but I don’t. It’s mud 😬
Favorite things for future videos: Stroll with a dog in Parque Paraiso where the Tomebamba and Yunancay meet! We just found a driver who will take dogs, so we plan to go with Star to Parque Paraiso a couple times a month for a doggie adventure.
We used to walk daisy there every weekend but she’s too old to walk there and back now. She gets too tired 😔
@@AmeliaAndJP If you ever want to, we could swing by in our taxi and get you and Daisy for the easy version. Being chauffeured there might make it possible for her. Our dog is 9 and isn't as lively as she once was. She walks more than runs these days.
Bonnie Willow thanks! We might take you up on that! We need to get together for a bebida at zatua miski 👍
Si, un buena idéa. I just looked up Zatua Miski and the first thing I saw was a chocolate and nut covered ice cream bar. Then a smoothie bowl. I'm INNN! :D We take the bus from our area into town, and it goes right down Calle Larga. That should work out fine. Say when, as Gary is retired and I am 1/2 retired, so our time is pretty open-ish.
Two more shrunken heads for Pumapungo haha NIce video guys! 🥰
Thanks!
My park ❤️

When they started to build the Panama Channel the Contractor toke Toquilla Hats to Panama for thousands of workers there.
Enjoyed the video, so thank you guys! We are planning to visit in October to scope the place out😁 so we'll have to visit the places you mentioned. Thank you again! Curious about the number of expats? Is the place overrun? Haha 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! There are a lot of gringos here but it’s not overrun. Yet 😁
Thank you for sharing this marvelous video with us all. Beautiful place. What is the name of the Otorongo apts owned or operated by Xavier and his family ? Thank you both.
Apartamentos Otorongo hotelotorongo.com
Nah it was that Ecuadorians helped build the Panama Canal and teddy roosevelt saw the liked the hat and called it Panama hat
My daughter keeps asking what is there to do in Ecuador besides smell the roses.. hahaha...she's in her twenties, so I will have to find some cool stuff that she would be interested in doing when she visits. She's not the outdoorsie adventurous type either...if you have any suggestions for a video on that :D
Does your daughter like crafts? I belong to a FB and in-person group called Crafty in Cuenca. It's for artists and quilters and people who either do or like any kind of art/craft. We get together once a month to make something. This time we'll make very cool spiral beaded bracelets. There's a group that walks shelter dogs in the parks. Several meditation groups. Lots of english-language movie nights. Yoga /dance/art classes. Plus plenty more that's not coming to mind.
@@bonniewillow2758 yes, sometimes she does. I joined that group. I have to say that I am in the US...learning all I can about relocating. I'm anal in the way that I want everything lined up in a row. Thank you Bonnie. You guys are definitely on my watch.
Bonnie has a blog too.

@@patricianewton3194 Hey I joined Crafty in Cuenca a year ago, and only moved here two months ago. You're smart to do that. I felt like I knew a few people by the time we got here.
@@bonniewillow2758 Thanks ...that was my hope
By the way, the Panama Hats were actually designed for the workers on the Panama Canal...to protect their heads from the baking sun. To this day, they are still made by hand, but that may not last too much longer. The younger generation seems to not like the idea of weaving the straws by hand... which was the way in which they have always been produced.
The original design was taken to Panama from Ecuador. They originated here but gained popularity when they started making them in Panama. 👍
@@AmeliaAndJPWhen my wife and I went through the new Panama Canal last November (on the Norwegian Bliss), we asked around but could not locate ANY Panama Hats that were made IN Panama. It seems that most Panamanians don't know where they are made these days. lol
Hi. I l find your videos very interesting! :) I am from Denmark - born in Quito. I commented on the blog post, but I was wondering if you have more information about the driver you mentened in the video? :) I am going to visit Cuenca in next month. I cant wait.
I'll send an email introduction to you and Edwin. Please check your spam folder. We've been having issues with that.
@@AmeliaAndJP thanks :)
JP and Amelia, in your elder years will you both continue to stay in Ecuador or do you plan to relocate back to the United States.
Is it easy to find like farmhouses (cortijos) to buy in the Cuenca area?

I had a question come up: are there English speaking movies in Cuenca?
They show American movies in the theaters here but they’re usually dubbed in Spanish with English subtitles.
