I've been watching a lot of these types of videos. I'm 63 and would like to relocate somewhere out the USA. So far it looks like your choice is the more attractive one I've seen so far.

I am impressed and thankful that you have un-intrusive and enjoyable background music (although entirely unnecessary). I have seen only a few videos and am now a subscriber. You make Ecuador seem interesting and an extremely inviting alternative to the chaos that is now the political and media scene in the U.S. Thank you.
What a nice couple! I'm watching you from Guayaquil. It's so nice when a foreigner appreciates the beauty of your country. Thanks for showing the good side of Ecuador to the world. Thanks for using the term developing country and not third world country, it is so painful and disrespectful. The next time a visit Cuenca I'll be looking for this pareja gringa just to say hi. If you ever need medical attention o help of any kind in Guayaquil I'm here for you.
I'm not even finished with this video yet, but I had to stop to write I just LOVE this rental! Watching this alone will convince me to relocate there to that city.
Your videos are NEVER too long. I really, really appreciate the detailed information and the conversational presentation style. I'm looking very hard at an unconventional lifestyle and your content is informative and inspirational, thank you!
This was a MOST informative video! I've come upon you folks only recently and am glad to find a more "seasoned" couple (read: not in their 20s!) who doesn't live in an Airbnb on a shoestring! Thank you for the detail, and I'm very sorry JP suffers with back problems. Greetings from Greeley!
I really enjoyed the video. The costs here in Mexico are pretty close and maybe a bit lower for everything you talked about. The doctors visits are definitely about the same which is unbelievable compared to the U.S. And finally, since this is pandemic era, watching your videos is very soothing compared to watching the news. Thank you
First a lovely young couple, I am envious of the young today. They travel the world and can work online. We didn't have those opportunities, the cost would have been to prohibitive, and we never thought of traveling over seas. The first time I flew or went to a dentist was when I was drafted. I wish you well.
The internet has opened up lots of possibilities for remote work. We feel very fortunate to be in a position to have this adventure. Thanks for you kind words and for your service 💚😊
I am envious too! But this video is so exciting that I am determined to visit Cuenca once again, after 40 years. Thank you JP and (super lovely) Amelia.
Interesting video guys, lovely house! The difference in cost of living is somewhat painful compared to Vancouver BC!! 😢😊 Thank you for including a lot of living expenses.
Came across your video's by complete accident, going to turn 62 in Nov so retirement is starting to figure in for me. I live in AZ so was thinking of places like Rocky Point in Mexico. But, after watching your videos starting to investigate Ecuador...thanks for the idea.
I know I'm super late. But I do want to say that if you decide to live outside of Cuenca (Outskirts). I have live in Baños, Ochoa Leon, and now Mayancela. Hot water does become more uncommon. I like the outskirts for its nice large homes, peacefulness, cheaper prices, and nice views. 😊😊
Very informational . I am traveling to Ecuador in a few months. I pay $800 mo rent in California now so it is good to know rents are very low there. More interested in the coastal areas so will be driving down from Quito thru Esmeralda and down to Guayaquil. Plan to visit Cuenca too. Well done guys! Btw, Amelia is so Cute (JP you lucky guy) Lol. Be well. I may follow your progress.
great info. We are Canadian so would take a lot for us to buy a heater. LOL. I have little to no hair so maybe $5 per month. I consider us gentle minimalists as well. Thanks sharing life experiences and costs.
These are really outstanding posts on Ecuador. My wife and I went to an International Living conference in Quito a few years ago. We also went to Cuenca, Loja, and Vilcabamba. I was so impressed with Ecuador and the people. People here are so reluctant to explore other options. We are vegan and thoroughly enjoyed going through the mercados. Thank you so much for all you do. Maybe one day I'll live in Cuenca. Do you have concerns about changing politics?
Thanks! We have concerns about changing politics here just like we did in the US. The main difference now is that we're far more mobile and able to leave quickly if we need to. Hopefully Ecuador will remain stable because we love it here, but no country is safe from foreign meddling and economic warfare.
@@AmeliaAndJP I felt more safe in Ecuador than I do in the United States. But as you note it is important to be mobile. Again thank you for the interesting take on Ecuador.

Same here. I’m 46, single and very worried I’m not going to be able to survive post-retirement in the US. I’ve worked extremely hard and am better off than most, but the recent explosion in real estate costs across the US has me questioning whether I will be able to afford a coastal or mountain home in NoCAL and not be house poor. I’d love to hear more about how you balance your US jobs while living overseas. I saw your video on how you get your mail, but would love to hear how you had that conversation with your employer.
That’s why I’m watching these videos. I was able to pick up a couple of rentals during the last housing downturn both under 100,000 for three bedroom two bath, so in some ways I’m luckier than most in that I could move into 1, but now the taxes are ridiculous. I was hoping for 5 acres of undeveloped land but even that’s expensive then then would be the cost of clearing it and building a house
I think you guys are adorable. I so enjoy watching the connection between the both of you. I so love Amelia's style in clothing and her beautiful and uplifting smile. JP you are so sweet and and warm in your demeanor. We are seriously considering moving to Ecuador within the next few years. This would be for our retirement years. We would love to meet up with you guys.
Excellent cost of living video. Thank you! Your house is gorgeous (and the furniture is of a very high quality, for a rental property). The price is higher than most of the other Cuenca home tours I've seen on UA-cam, but it's still an incredible value by US standards (especially when compared to a major hub city like NYC, Los Angeles or Washington DC). All in all, the monthly cost of living seems extremely reasonable. JP mentioned being a Web designer. I am likewise a Web designer and would love to pick your brain regarding employment possibilities and how other people you've met in our line of work are making out. Thanks again. Be well and take care.
There aren’t really any employment opportunities for expats here. At least not for the pay we’re used to. Your best bet is to continue working for a company or clients in the states. Most jobs here pay very little and require Spanish fluency.
Y'all! My jaw is on the floor. Thank you SO much for sharing the cost. It's so hard to find that information in videos. We are in the states and thinking about where we want to go first. I was thinking Mexico City...but now I'm thinking Cuenca! We have 2 little girls and would love to be close to other world schoolers. My husband is in IT and currently looking for a job with a US company that will let him work from anywhere. His current employer won't. Thanks for the video!
I just wanted to comment...definitely do your research. You CAN live on alot less monthly income than these two. For example, they are renting a place in a "gringo" area of the city so it will be more expensive. Most locals pay around $300-350 for 3BR/2BA home or even less. Yes, that would be unfurnished in most cases. But, the great deal is that utilities are usually no more than $40 a month including internet. I just wanted you to know. I lived in Cuenca for a year and hope to return soon. I will let you know there is another "craigslist" type site called Olx.com.ec. You will see there what the locals are actually paying for apartments, houses, etc.
El Vergel isn’t a gringo area at all. We’re the only gringos on our block and we rarely see other gringos in this area. The gringo areas aren’t very close to here. Rent has gone up a lot here in the past few years. There are unfurnished places in that range but they’re either outside the main city or they’re not as nice as our house. You can definitely live here for a lot less than we do, though 👍
@@AmeliaAndJP Ok, yeah. I know about the other gringo areas, but this one was mentioned in someone elses video about the gringo areas in Cuenca. It can be more difficult when you have specific needs. Glad you were able to find a good place though. God Bless!
Cuenca is beautiful and I will be visiting this city and other cities in Ecuador in a few months. I love the diverse climate, its people, and the food. You can grow a lot of veggies and fruits in a small garden. Good luck!
Glad I don't have all the suburban concerns as you, since that means lower costs for a bachelor like me. A bed? Wow? Joking, and would like a dog, but who knows. Thanks a bunch for showing all the nice places and decent places to eat, all quite similar to my tastes.

Your hair looks great!!! my grandma used to say ( the grayer you got the older you are) in spanish in ecuador we say white hair instead of gray, that's why grandma always did her hair till her very last day, any way have fun guys thanks greatings from long island NY
Wow this was so informative!! However, on the water note - I lived in Teresina, Brazil for 2 months and the families home did not have hot water simply because it wasn't necessary in the heat there! So its not just hearsay but it prob depends on weather!! Your house is lovely!! I am so jealous people in toronto are paying $1800 Canadian a month for 400 sqft !
I bet Brazil was a cool experience! We were paying $1850 for a 1 bedroom apartment in Denver. Our house here would rent for 3 or 4 thousand in Denver. Although it would have heat and air conditioning 😁
Yay...I'm so glad this was in my recommended...Vegans living abroad. Would love to see eating out as a vegan videos. Also, thanks for info on cost of living. Best!
I’m vegan too and would love to see your groceries from a recent purchase laid out on the counter. Maybe share what’s local, delicious and the price. Do they offer any plant based meats?
Nice video, thank you for doing it. I live in Denver, specifically on the Golden Triangle. Just realized my rent is 48% of my income 🥵, not happy with that. Live across from work, but unacceptable. Looking at moving out of the States once traveling resume in 2021. Be safe and healthy 🙏🏽
While there are pros being in a country where the USD is the local currency , there are also cons. I retired in Colombia three years ago, from Canada. I currently rent a 3 bedroom , 2.5 bath house in Medellin for about 425 Canadian per month, about 325 USD plus utilities. What you really save money on, by being in South America , is anything to do with labour costs - getting a housekeeper, house repairs such as electric or plumbing, health or dental work, etc.
Maybe someday you will have a place with dishwasher and double paned windows! Your place looks nice. If you do get place with the double paned windows you might save on your heating and air conditioning costs.
Something I noticed was missing in El Salvador was screened windows. Is it the same in Ecuador? Cuenca Ecuador is tempting, but like you, I would not tolerate the high altitude. Vilcabamba is attractive for that reason plus the mosquitos are minimal and I read Malarial is not in Vilcabamba.
the house is a great place in any part of USA ($800/month? sweet).....internet speed is faster? i would have lost that bet.....once again, VERY informative (gonna have to watch this again, and take notes). Thanks. Wayne
Thanks for all the advise. I have a 30 lb. dog that found me on the streets in Mex. and she wouldn't let go; then, my regular dog that's maybe 45 lb. - this might make it more challenging to get a place so I normally get to where we are going and, then, find accommodations with some local help.
How about gathering your sell everything afterthoughts with other ex-pats who brought their own belongings/and stuff in a container - and what would be done differently? Enjoying your revelations!
JP and Amelia, Speaking of rental in Cuenca, do houses and /or apartments come with “heater” ? Per info the weather in Cuenca is quite cold especially at night.
Most do not come with a heater. You'll need to buy your own. There are no central heating systems in Cuenca but some of the newer places up in San Joaquin have radiant floor heating.
You looking great Amelia ! happy for you guys...saludos de new england, ya voy to south america, mean moving for a better food,, real fresh.. to be healthy not sick, like am here most time..
Hi,just discovered you and subscribed. The medical,is that the price for full coverage? Do you have out of pocket medical expenses and will it cover out of pocket expenses?
We have a $5 copay. This is for full coverage. They reimburse qualified out of pocket expenses. The coverage varies a lot by plan so you really need to get a quote to fully understand what it will be for your situation.
I'm on my second video of your channel, and I am so excited about taking a trip to Cuenta. What a lovely home you have and the weather sounds just like my cup o tea. I'm defintely making a trip there to check it out. Thanks very much to both of you for your channel and sharing your experiences there.
I'm in Fort Collins CO and wanted to check out what it was like over. So I can relate to and you say crappy stuff in Denver compared. just wanted to see what it was like to live in another place that most people around you don't even think about. Seems awesome thanks for the video!
Very nice. Thank you! Are you guys in the same house now? I saw something you uploaded two days ago...the background was different. Anyway, I love Cuenca too...have been there three times. Planning to move there next year with my partner -- assuming this COVID-19 thing would be thing of the past. Stay safe!
I am a minimalist. Minimalism is NOT poverty. Minimalism is focusing on the necessary and sufficient resources that serve your best interests. *The fewer things that you own, the fewer things that own you.*
They never seem to put in enough outlets ( yes, I'm an electrician ) . In my place in Cuenca , we had 15 feet of kitchen counter space, and only one outlet . I doubt there are any codes ( which can be a good thing), and not many workers care about them if there are. I do like Cuenca though , for many reasons.
Amazing and thorough information! You mentioned you were going to post a spreadsheet, where does one go for that? (Sorry if you said, I couldn't find the line again when I jumped back quick)
Hi , what I wonder is the situation about buying a new car 4x4 and the brands available and prices, I’m not a big fan of public transportation,I’ve like to travel with my dogs and not people can you let me know ? All I did find out was expensive used cars , and for me is a deal breaker, thank you guys you’re awesome 👏
Faith Building yes, you can but you would really want to research your route regarding roads, safety etc. Check out Expedition Overland on Amazon Prime. Granted they take overland routes when they can, not main highways, but it will give you an idea of what you’d be up against.
RVs aren't popular here, but a lot of people have vans and live the vanlife. You might check out Trent and Allie, and Luca and Sara w/ Leave Everything and Wander (ua-cam.com/video/JyD_KIt1s3c/v-deo.html). Both are vanlife channels and they drove from the US to Ecuador.
I speak, read, and write English and Spanish and currently learning Japanese as I am moving to Osaka Japan in about 10 months from the US. Are you planning to learn Spanish as you are living in Ecuador? Or are you going to rely on Cuencanos that speak English, as well as relying on Gringo Post and such, or frequent just Gringo areas like Ordonez Lasso, Las Americas, El Centro, etc. Or Are you planning to live true Local Cuenca, interacting with their Locals, culture, way of living etc. It will be very interesting to know, all the best of luck in your new life!!!
I'm in Jackson Hole, where, of course, it's cold in winter. Now, 9 degrees outside, but 60 degrees inside and comfortable for me. So, I don't think I would ever be uncomfortable there. And, I lived in Seattle and north and south (Oregon) on the coast. So, Cuenca would be a good place for me to live. Half the cost of living for me here in the US. See you when I fully retire in your spring 2021.
The expenses are a lot higher than I expected. Your hair costs $40, that's what I pay in the US now for hair and color, and this video was 4 years ago. I paid $5 for a haircut in Mexico, which included a lot of extras. I think the IMF transition to the US dollar affected Equador with a lot of inflation.

Thanks for sharing great info! Quito vs Cuenca, Cuenca has bigger expat community? I haven't seen people settling down in Quito. Is there any problem with staying in Quito?
Quito also has a large expat community but it’s a really large sprawling city so it’s not as easy to walk everywhere. We really liked Quito but didn’t feel like home to us on our exploratory trip. Cuenca felt like home the first day. It feels like the states felt when we were kids. Slower pace of life. Family oriented. Kids playing in the streets. Food tastes better. Some days it can feel pretty nostalgic living here.

This is a very informative site. Bravo!
Amelia you look 10 years younger!!!
Leave Canada....TOO Expensive!
JP, great camera man look, I thought I was in L.A. for just a moment:) Thanks guys for this one. Great stuff!!!
Thanks!
Hey guy's thanks for your quick reply, planning to travel later this year but will send link, thanks again.....
They don't have the major brands of plant-based meats, but they have some good Ecuadorian brands.
How do you like living in Medellin?
Very informative, thank you!
I was really looking into Mexico but you guys are slowly changing my mind 😂
Maybe someday you will have a place with dishwasher and double paned windows! Your place looks nice. If you do get place with the double paned windows you might save on your heating and air conditioning costs.
Wow that is a ridiculous price. We thought it would be almost double. Time to book our flights to Cuenca 😎
Yep. It’s hard to believe sometimes 👍😊
You guys are the BEST!! Thanks so much for all the info in all of your videos!!!
Thanks!
Very informative. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. Wayne
Great videos. Lots of good info and less setup. Thnx
I was going to the Catholic University Hospital physical therapy for $8/hour. Magnetic therapy, too!
great channel with lots of information .... thank you
Thanks!
I haven’t been to Ecuador since 1995 and they didn’t have hot water then. I was in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca
Hot water is common now.
Thanks for all the advise. I have a 30 lb. dog that found me on the streets in Mex. and she wouldn't let go; then, my regular dog that's maybe 45 lb. - this might make it more challenging to get a place so I normally get to where we are going and, then, find accommodations with some local help.
Great video and information! Thanks for sharing your experiences here in Cuenca.
Thanks! Ecuador is an incredible and beautiful country! 😊💚
Very informative. Thank you. I was wondering what I’d need to purchase at supermaxi vs. el mercado so that part was helpful too.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
you look great Amelia..Love your videos. Lucky guy JP!
Very nice. Thank you! Are you guys in the same house now? I saw something you uploaded two days ago...the background was different. Anyway, I love Cuenca too...have been there three times. Planning to move there next year with my partner -- assuming this COVID-19 thing would be thing of the past. Stay safe!
Nope. We moved to the coast in Olón Ecuador. ua-cam.com/video/5YNc1FhaG0U/v-deo.html
Thank you..you are such a lovely couple..I love your videos,
And your pets.
We don’t have nearly enough outlets either. We have several extension cords 😁
What a beautiful place
Amazing and thorough information! You mentioned you were going to post a spreadsheet, where does one go for that? (Sorry if you said, I couldn't find the line again when I jumped back quick)
Thanks! The blog post with all the details is linked in the description.
50s and 60s in the winter? I doubt I'd need a heater. Sweet!
General Grievous indeed... lol... The force is strong with this one!
😂😂😂
Hi , what I wonder is the situation about buying a new car 4x4 and the brands available and prices, I’m not a big fan of public transportation,I’ve like to travel with my dogs and not people can you let me know ? All I did find out was expensive used cars , and for me is a deal breaker, thank you guys you’re awesome 👏
hi I just found y'all, I've only seen about three of your videos but I love them and you're making Ecuador sound amazing! Do they have RV parks there?
I was wondering the same thing about RV parks.
Can you drive from The US to Ecuador!?? 🤔🤔
Estamos estudiando y practicando español 😊 We have a blend of gringo and cuencano friends. 👍💚
Great info. Super helpful. Thanks
Awesome vid tks! Sorry about your back!
Awesome!!! Thank you for your channel, very helpful. Do you use a specific app for your US based phone.
We use WhatsApp. But we also have WiFi calling with Verizon. That makes it look like we’re still in the US whether we’re in Ecuador or India 👍
@@AmeliaAndJP 👌thank you
The expenses are a lot higher than I expected. Your hair costs $40, that's what I pay in the US now for hair and color, and this video was 4 years ago. I paid $5 for a haircut in Mexico, which included a lot of extras. I think the IMF transition to the US dollar affected Equador with a lot of inflation.
Excellent video. A lot of info. THX!!!
So, like out here in the states, do you need to put up a security deposit? Great video by the way
Typically yes, a security deposit of one months rent is required.
Hello .I'm glad. U showing u apartment...u should mention to the owner of the house to place a trail..or handler in the stairs so u won't fall grasis..x enseñar su Casa...🇪🇨
That would be nice. I wonder if he would do that 🤔
@@AmeliaAndJP If you ask nice to him and explain him what happened I will do it, you can use the expression "no sea malito" it is a psychological expression we have in Ecuador to mention we are asking for a favor in deep with honesty. That expression is very very common :)
Great tip! Thanks for the language lesson too! We’re always learning new Ecuadorian expressions. 👍💚
@@JCtravelnow "no sea malito" jajajaja te pasaste! 👌😂
I likes that, Ecuador is not a third World country, it's a developing country
I would have loved an establishing shot of the location to start with.. Very nice, Ill consider it seriously.!
We lived in El Vergel but we don’t like sharing our exact location with everyone for safety reasons.
@@AmeliaAndJP You are so right! It is super family-oriented. Loved it there!
jp where do you keep your banking /savings the states or ecuador? thanks love your videos
Very helpful, we're considering retiring in Cuenca. Can you recommend a good resource for finding a place to rent? Thanks!
We found our place on GringoPost.com. There's a facebook group called Ecuador House Hunters that is also useful.
Olx has all kinds of listings
You both are lovely couple..I am in Salinas looking for a place to move and Salina is not my place…..so difficult find a nice place
You bring several points, one being internet, i have found many countries have excellent internet, such as my experience in Bulgaria, We have several if the same propane heaters u have, and work well, just need to manage. Cheers n gd luck in yr new space.
Hi! New sub here...We lived a year in Cuenca. You have beautiful skin so please be so careful because the sun at the equator is so STRONG! It has left my chest all blotchy when I once had nice skin there. So, just a friendly reminder. God Bless!
We both wear lots of sunscreen 😎👍
