    I partially dig up my Pac-Man frog once a week to make sure he is still alive. He's being super emo right now, so I gently remove the dirt from off of top of him which makes him squirm while I do it, indicating that he is fine. Then I pour a bit of fresh water on top of him, and rebury him again.

    Ugh I know that fragility all too well. I worked at a big box pet store and they decided to put the dart frogs on sale at the height of a polar vortex. About 4 different customers snapped them up in one day and took them outside in -10 degrees. They didn't even make it to the car and we lost every single frog that was shipped to us. We even asked the customers if they had a way to get them home safely and they said yes. Then we were promply yelled at for selling "defective" animals. I'm still traumatized...

    • @Parcha64
      @Parcha64 2 роки тому +35

      Yeah I do not recommend working at a pet store. I might be more biased because I had the worst managers, but the animal welfare issue is too much. I have so many messed up stories and I feel guilty all the time. Here in the US our laws are a joke. My state requires a permit to adopt squirrel off the street but you can walk into any pet store for pythons or tarantulas and stuff.

    • @courtneyoneal8845

      We adopted 3 American green tree frogs from a rescue a wk ago including a waterfall style terrarium and before we could get them adjusted to our house, within 24 hrs the weather dropped from 73down to 53 degrees during the day and in the low 30s at night. One got skinny and died yesterday morning. The other two are not chubby and plump like they were a couple days ago and I'm worried. My daughter gave all of her money she saved up for this adoption because she adores frogs. The adoption included a chubby frog as well. It seems fine so far living in the mud in the back of the tree frog enclosure. Climbs out at night. I don't want them to suffer and my daughter would be devastated for them to all day this soon. What a waste of $175!!

    • @ledumpsterfire6474
      @ledumpsterfire6474 2 роки тому +5

      Being a big box pet store, it was probably both. I stopped buying live feeder mice from PetCo because about every 1:3 were visibly sick upon inspection, and since I didn't know what was going on with them, I wouldn't feed them to our ball python.
      I stopped going to them altogether because I'd always notice an animal was sick and bring it to their attention. They'd say "oh yeah, we'll definitely get someone to take a look at them."
      I'd go back two days later to see them still just sitting there in the enclosure. I'd just buy them myself to get them to a vet and try to nurse them back to health, since the store obviously wasn't going to do anything, and ideally find someone to adopt them out to if they came back from the edge. Was only successful maybe half the time, usually they were too far gone.
      But yeah, animal sales laws in the US are hot garbage. Personally, I feel exotic/non-domesticated animals should legally require certification. Nothing too crazy, but definitely at least a husbandry class dedicated to that specific animal.
      If you can't afford a few hundred dollars for a class, you can't afford to keep an exotic pet either, because they usually need complex diets and enclosures, and the first time they get sick it'll probably be a $500-$1k bill.

    As a frog keeper, there's a problem I can identify: it seems the more engaging the frog is, the more downsides it has. For example, pixie frogs, pacman frogs, tomato frog and toads are quite easy as far as frogs go; fairly available, easy to house, inexpensive. On the other hand, these sorts of frogs are kinda boring. On the other end of the spectrum, dart frogs are incredibly wonderful to observe; absolutely beautiful, endearing and active. However, in addition to being particularly fragile, they are microphagists which is annoying. Tree frogs also have some liabilities, while also being very rewarding. I don't mind since I'm willing to put up with fruit flies and I still find joy in the more sedate frogs, but its these reasons why frogs in general aren't the best starter herps.
    The solution therefor is arguably the tiger salamander. Housing them is easy, terrestrial salamander care is fairly similar to that of toads and other terrestrial frogs, they're big and colorful, and they have a very engaging personality, reputably begging for food and otherwise acting like leopard geckos. Except they aren't widely available captive bred...

It's easier to look at the bottom of the glass tank to see where their bellies are as far as finding them goes. Probably one of the very fewest researchers that even know anything about this so its super cool to see people actually notice this in practice

Sometimes they are a little more work than most reptiles in the cleaning because of their permeable skin. I am always cautious and only handle with super clean and rinsed hands and that is usually only for the Dumpies. I'll wear gloves for the others. The Vietnamese Mossy frogs need a large water area so I have a full water bottom tank. They are always swimming around. But with that, more time for water changes. Such a good question! My hunch is that tourist places selling them as souvenirs in plastic buckets and not actual animals killed the allure. Kids buy them, they die off, and the experiment is over. Whereas keeping them properly is both awesome but somewhat unheard of (at least where I live)

    • @awesomeanimalswithalishav5874
      @awesomeanimalswithalishav5874 2 роки тому

      Hermit crabs are still around, but many people realized how horrible the situation was and stopped promoting them. For a really long time all hermit crabs were collected from the wild. Many died on their way to souvenir shacks, then most of the rest died when tourists took them home and didn't know how to care for them. They're not hard to care for if you have a good enough set-up with an aquarium section and spend a lot of money on it all, but most people really thought they could just have little bowls of water for them.
      Lately people have been learning more and there's even a very few people who have managed to breed them, so it's getting possible to buy captive bred from places like Josh's Frogs. Crab Central Station has a really good channel about them.

    I wouldn't categorize the White's tree frogs as simple to keep. It gives off the wrong impression to people about the species. Once you have figured out all their needs, they are perhaps simpler than many other species of frogs, but that doesn't mean they're easy. Also, for them to thrive and be happy you need something taller than a 60 cm enclosure like most people recommend on YT. They need a _minimum_ of 90 cm. My setup is a 45x45x90 cm (18x18x36") tall ExoTerra enclosure and they use absolutely the entire area. I am even thinking of upgrading it once they grow to their full size. They are supposed to be very active and climbing around and not just sit there like a blob, like many people think. If they only sit around, then they are either obese or simply aren't given the space to move around to their heart's content, or both. I think they are thought of almost like the 'goldfish of fish', when the truth is that both goldfish and White's tree frogs are very needy and sensitive animals.

    Hello, I’m a proud and sad handler who had a pair of wild caught Green Frogs for nearly a decade. The best thing about frogs is they’re vocal (but you won’t need hearing protection). The biggest challenge to keeping them is they generally need two environments to thrive. Otherwise, they need strict environmental regulation.
    Average frog? Half filled fish tank.
    Never did get mine to breed, though 😢.
    They’re active, they have personality, are attractive to look at, and are interesting.
    IMHO.

Fast forward now she has an eye disease where she will be going completely blind. Downside of owning a frog with issues, there is not much research out there. The only amphetamine I've had was a western toad, she was pretty sociable, she would stomp around and make little peeping noises at you and for an exotic pet she was fairly low maintenance. The only issues where that she smelled and the tank took a lot of cleaning, she wasn't too smart so feeding was a bit of a hassle you had to wiggle the food in front of her a lot before she noticed it. With all that being said she was a great pet and I would love to have another one someday.

  • @jasonemm6327
    @jasonemm6327 2 роки тому

    I think one of the things that can make them bad pets for some is that they can be difficult to heat. The reason that something like a bearded dragon is so easy to keep is that its a diurnal thermoregulator from arid areas so temperatures can easily be achieved with a basking lamp and you usually don't need to worry about humidity. Aslong as theres a basking spot slightly above the prefered body temp and a cooler area below, the lizard will move about and control its body temperature. Most frogs are thermal conformist and nocturnal in behaviour, living in the shade and undergrowth where humidity is high. Ambient, overall temperatues are much more important than hot spots in this case. In my experience, a lot of species won't always bask to thermoregulate and high wattage heat lamps can be too drying. Heat mats are sometimes used, but aren't great at warming air temperature. If you can find a species of frog that's temperatures are within or close to your room temperature then you're winning. Then a heat lamp could be used in a large enclosure to create optional local hot spots which frogs may or may not use. I find living a cold country, many species that some from warmer climates say are "easy to keep" can be difficult due to my cooler room temperature.

    I want frogs and toads, but I'm not sure about trying any again. Because I do a lot of research before getting them, I usually have no problem with keeping animals, but I completely failed the two times I had frogs. Most of my pets demand to be held all the time, so pets that aren't into that is a relief. One frog never ate, but the other I got at the same time was doing okay, then took a dive. The only thing I can figure out is that it wasn't humid enough constantly for them. It's a desert here, so I really have to fight for humidity. My geckos & anoles do okay in their bioactive tanks, but it seems the frogs were more sensitive to the dry air/too wet cycle.
