I must say I’m concerned with the capability of the CO, it was a basic question that Senator Fawcett was asking but it took repeated attempts to get some sort of answer. A simple yes or no was require. Instead the CO skirted around and deflected, therefore my suspicion is that there are gaps.

They should have started with narco type subs .
In all honesty that's what we should be focusing on, large numbers of smaller - harder to detect , low crew numbers , easy to maintain & cost effective missile & drone armed boats .
If defense is the number one goal , covering alot of littoral water is more important.
Littoral waters can be backed up by air & land launched missiles. And that could be achevied in time & on budget.

The APS is incredibly notorious for filling positions by “experts by appointment “…..the old DMO was famous for that and we all know how DMO performed!
Oh come on.... a lot of the experts by appointment were nominated by lobbyists.. we had ministers who bought in "ideal candidates" and then retrospectively tried to get them 457'd. DMO couldnt make any major change without DefMin approval because they had to go therough star ranked uiniforms first and the nature of the military is that you dont push back against the executive arm of the govt unless theyre about to do something blatantly dumb. DMO ofwetn ended up with a schitt sandwich because of a lack of scope control by capability group or worse CIOG who didnt know a computer from a microwave and who were completely staff imbalanced by contractors because everyone was resigning to get paid 3 times more to gove the same advise from the private sector. I can speak from direct knowledge as its the career path I took.

The issue will be “holding” the staff. Mil pers will be posted every 2yrs or so. Civpers will reach their grade peak after 3 to 5 years and will often move on after that. Who/How is the expertise held/built on? Capabilities aside this is a safety/engineering intense piece of kit. ADO, despite the words of reassurance, often don’t do it professionally OR properly. There needs to a nuclear navy career stream otherwise we will be at the mercy of the foreign powers and gunrunners. C27 Spartan anyone? All of the folks involved in this project will need to be qualified not by position they hold but by academic qualifications. A team of Rocket scientists effectively. A lot of these positions will drive non defence issues eg disposal.
We do not need extra taxes.
Amazing how a whole lot of nuclear workforce tenders came out of Defence today, two days after this. Coincidence? Unlikely.

Why is a skimmer in charge of the AUKUS project, surely there is a qualified Submariner capable of doing the job
subs were first put forward 25 years ago for refurb, SLEP and replacement. Thuis cluster has been going on for 25 years.. The absolute gall of this bloke to not know the history of why we are where we are at would be laughable if it wasnt so serious
also there are differtenmt elements of AUKUS, so the uniforms will be rotated in as needed or relevant. all of procurement has a purple policy when uniforms are attached to projects. so it could just as likely be a Group Commander or LTCOL from the other shops.
Long winded question by Fawcett - are you confident your people are competent to do their jobs?
MIT is great but why cant ANSTO and the ANU (or another Aussie Uni) run those courses?

@MrBlunders70 We already have Nuclear engineering courses in Australia. Running an engineering degree wouldn't have security implications.
They hired on merit, not qualifications....going to fail.

Bad answer. If this guy dodges answering relatively minor questions like this one imagine what he will do if its something really important. It looks like the next two decades will be a repeat of the last three or four as far and administrative bungling and running for cover. It's a lot of money and risk to put in the hands of people who are more concerned about how they appear and their careers and not obtaining a very successful outcome for the project and the security of all Australians. Hopefully this will change with more oversight. Good luck.

@@HMASJervisBay what a dumb arse thing to say. there has only been one class of sub that has consistently breached and penetrated US carrier battle groups in a defined training area (because they dont make it easy for the sub, so everyone knows that the sub is in the killbox area so easier to resource your own assets to find them.)

Aukus are the biggest waist of money. Subs and Battie ship's. Are obsolete. Plane's helicopters weapons, and sub detection Boies. Nuclear subs are a first strike vehicle. Close to enemy territory.
This is going to flop.

Our Military "Leaders" be they Admirals, Air Marshalls or Generals are playing to the catch-phrases and politically-favoured terms of the Public Service that are interested in Processes and Procedures... Instead of buying and placing in the hands of our Soldiers, Sailors and Air--persons... good kit to do the job!
These boats are at the cost of Regiments of Self-Propelled Guns, New Systems, better aircraft and ...Service Conditions!
